    Over 600hp and more torque than the original V8 F1 engine are wicked ciphers for an inline 4 banger. What an incredible machine, even if it's not a 100% competition ready F1 car

    • @bingoberra18
      @bingoberra18 4 года назад +6

      Well the torque statement is a bit of a truth with modification. The turbo engine will only rev half as much as the F1 engine, which means you can effectively have a 2:1 gear ratio on the F1 compared to this, which means that the normal ~350Nm on the F1 translates to 700Nm when you take the different gearing into account.

    • @grahamjefferson7143
      @grahamjefferson7143 4 года назад +6

      Until you consider the original engine had a powerband that was about 1500RPM wide and this engine probably has one that is 4500RPM wide so the area under the curve and effective work it can produce over a given period of time is way, way more. I used to work on the engine that was originally used by Marussia in this car and I've seen the car in the video above on circuit as well as some times and data from it. It's quicker than the original car in a lot of situations. I'd liken its corner exit pace to that of the 2013 car with the KERS on full deploy.

    • @bingoberra18
      @bingoberra18 4 года назад

      @@grahamjefferson7143 Well I do not have any experience with these cars, its just that when you say that this engine has much more torque it sounds impressive, but it doesnt say much unless you also compare the revs, powerband and ultimate horsepower. A VW Golf TDI has more torque nowadays than an F1 engine. That you have to keep in a tight band on the F1 NA cars is part of the sport and separates the champions from the rest, having too flexible of an engine takes the hard and fun part out of it.

The power to weight ratio is still OFF THE CHARTS and you have to have some serious balls just to be able to drive it hard enough to warm it up, let alone give it the beans. • @TeslasSecret
      @TeslasSecret 4 года назад

      @@willywillywillywillywilly Very good point. I do wonder what they mean by "good for 3000km annually". If that means an upper engine servicing then you're good to go again it sort of sounds alright. The catch here is the price. I understand that one still needs a team at the track, which is the main hassle with these cars in my mind, just a smaller one. Sounds good, but if I were breathing the rarefied air of the extremely rich wouldn't I be tempted to shell half more and have a fuller, more noble engine powering my adrenaline? My comments have been about F1 here, not other forms of motorsport. Formula 1 is supposed to be the pinnacle, even Sebastian Vettel wants the V12's back after his recent radio comment in the Russian GP. From memory the earlier 80's Turbo F1 cars were not regulated in boost and the peak quali trim engine power was claimed; impressive none the less and a good era for F1. One I enjoyed watching, but the engines still sounded rubbish though IMHO. As a regular visitor to FOS, send an 80's turbo i4 Brabham BT52 up the hillclimb and it won't turn as many heads, as say a V8 Williams FW08 from the same era. However a 90's V12 Ferrari 412 T2 would blow both into the weeds.

    Pretty obvious that most commenters have never ever tried to run any sort of motorsports on their own dime before. A proper F1 car, maintained and run in its designed state, could _easily_ bankrupt a multi-millionaire just trying to dabble in a hobby. They are EXPENSIVE!!! That developed F2 engine (old VW/Audi 1.8T, yay! Had one on my old MkIV GTI ;) obviously with way less power lol) is a serious bit of kit with a lot of racing pedigree; less power and revs than the F1 V8, sure, but so much torque. This Marussia with a developed F2 engine may be more "F1.5" than F1, but even an F3 car is flippin' quick and this is WAY faster than that!

      You have to understand that back in the day formula 1 teams were just a couple dozen guys or even less than that. In the nineties teams had about a 100 people, now they are well over 400 people for a top team like Ferrari, Mercedes or Red Bull.
      To start a modern day formula one engine you have a protocol that includes a procedure to preheat the engine and you have to do it from the day before, it takes a long time. It is not plug and play anymore. It is so complex that if you touch the wrong button you can shut it down and to get it going again you need to reboot it and that also takes a while.
      A turbo inline 4 engine was used in the past in formula 1, with BMW developing one engine that had about 1000 HP and won the world championship with Nelson Piquet.
      I believe Formula 1 should have the option of having different engine applications which would allow to develop different engines. One could be a 2 liter turbo inline 4 with no electric assitance that would be so much cost effective and even more reliable and powerful than the curren 1.6 liter hybrid turbo v6 engines which are a nightmare logistically.
      Just remember a few weeks ago Sebastian Vettel crying on the radio asking for the v12 engines to come back. That could also be an option normal aspirated v8 or v10 or v12 with restrictions on displacement and engine speeds competing with others. That would be awesome the sound of those engines were amazing.

      People do motor swaps on things all the time, especially when the old motor has become obsolete by newer, better, usually cheaper and easier to access motors.
      I think some F1 cars belong to stay original, but that means that once they hit an age they go into a museum and sit there, that's not what a cars built for. It's built to race.
      I'd rather someone takes the F1 cars from mid-field or rear of the grid and races them

      Armchair Racer in other words. It’s barley an original F1 car then. Even from 2011. Instead of a V8 F1 engine to turbocharged four cylinder. It’s bloody pathetic tbh. “F1 car” 😂

      It literally is an F1 car. It was built to race to race in F1, and built to comply with F1 regs. Having a different engine doesn’t mean it’s not an F1 car. By your logic, when teams take engines out of their old cars, and put them on display, it’s also not an F1 anymore
