Had my childhood N64 under my bed for years, stumbled across your GE videos in my recommendations and binge watched almost all of them. Finally found a copy of goldeneye this week and started playing around with it. This video helped me on all the levels....thank you!

Got to say man I’m from the n64 prime era. Recently picked up a 64 and have been working on some GE speed runs.
Got a handle on on 1.2 control style. Got a few decent runs. 58 on dam, 124 silo, 29 frigate, 29 depot.
Really fun stuff.

fukn loved this video bro, goldeneye is one of my all time favorite games, it's a true classic, and you can still pick it up to this day and have fun.
I love speedrunners, too, I've always been impressed by speedrunners because they are the most knowledgeable and skilled players. you taught me a few things I did not know about this game in your in- depth explanations of some of the mechanics of each level.

The end of Facility reminded me of something. My friends and I when we played GoldenEye, we never knew about the doors, we always used the conveyer opening to exit. It wasn't until recently I discovered the doors. I guess when you see someone do it for the first time, that's your way of doing it, too.
I always used the conveyor as a kid too. Never even thought about trying the doors until years later lol

Thank You Goose!, This tutorial is great! Been a lover of Goldeneye since before I even owned an N64 playing at daycare as a kid and kicking everyone's ass. As a kid I challenged my self to stay up all night and beat Goldneye in 1 sitting It used to take me hours. The first time it took me about 7 or 8 hours of playing normally on secret agent. Second time doing it, cut down to about 5 or 6. Your Coop speed run with Bass Boost is what got me my first true exposure to speed running Goldeneye but now seeing this tutorial has actually got me doing it and practicing. What Controller technique do you prefer? I just can not shake using 1.1 over 1.2 controls. Too many years as a child playing has engraved 1.1 in me. Having troubles being able to keep full strafe while getting smoothly through swinging doors like on Surface and weapon changes for warping. I have started to use more of a "Keyboard" style of pushing buttons.

Hey Ryan, thank you so much for this video. It got me started running Goldeneye and it is greatly appreciated. I was wondering if you would consider updating this video with any new strats. I only know of one strat that's different than what you do here, but maybe there are more. The one I know of is on surface 2 where instead of going around the back side of the building to throw the mine, runners are entering the double doors and throwing the mine strait up. I'm not actually sure which is faster, but I don't see runners going around the backside at all, maybe because it's more consistent to enter the doors. Please give us an updated version of this video, but even if you don't feel like doing another one, I am still really thankful for what you've already given to us. STAY TRUE!!!
throwing it straight up is the older strat i think.
What's awesome about this is that I've owned this game since it first came out, and to this day I still have not beaten Cradle. Control was also the one level that always gave me issues - speedrunner I am not :)

are you strafing like all the time? like on dam, are you in strafe through the entire level? or just the beginning and the end when you're running to the jump off point?

Forward and sidestep is the fastest you can possibly move.
Therefore not aiming at the lock, and picking it off just as you reach it is the fastest way to get through
in the jungle i try throwing mines it works but the guards shoot at me and i lose health and then when i get to xenia i don't have time too get the drone gun at the bridge because xenia appears first what do i do?
do you play shooters inverted? if so High Five, Golden eye and star fox 64 if the reason i can not play any shooter with a game pad normal.
That's where i've been going wrong! i've been "Following the polygons of the N64" for too long! :P
Ok, i have a serious question
Why shouldn't we follow the polygons on cavern's spiral? Why smooth is better?
im just starting this vid. i remember in jr. high i claimed i had beaten all of the game on 00. friends wanted me to bring my cartridge over to prove it. well id used a gameshark to unlock it all. so i had the check marks on secret and 00 but not agent because the shark didnt check that for some reason. so i sat and played through agent before the bus came, having realized this... took me about half an hour to beat the game on agent. iirc.
There might be a use to turning music off. It may help you to feel calmer without any of the tension from the music. Some may be surprised how it helps to slightly reduce that pressure a bit.
Just for example, try it on Resident Evil 2 maybe. Much of the tension comes from the music on it's own.
Are there any games where turning the music off slightly boosts the performance? I know some consoles had multiple chips, sometimes with shared usage, like audio chips sometimes offloaded partially for graphics when available (Saturn, for example.)

I have a question: is it possible to modify the game to add decimal time to the run stats? That would make speedrunning more interesting cuz WRs would be improved by milisecs.
that's a beautiful idea, but I suspect any alterations to the game would create a new category as opposed to replacing the old WRs.
No one is willing to do that, it's for the same reason why cheats aren't allowed in speed runs, it's not what its intended.

why not use the grenade strat on cradle? is it only for single level runs because the chance of a guard dropping a grenade is too low?
You get a grenade drop like once or twice per hour when constantly restarting the level. That is the worst full game strat out there. It isn't even used in IL's anymore either, the double ZMG strat is a second faster.
As a young kid it took me months to get Control on Agent lol.

I am trying to learn how to aim with the controller, but I'm so terrible at it.
And by terrible I mean it takes me around 20 seconds to shoot the lock at the first level.
Everything up until that is very fast (not speedrun fast, but no more than a minute).
Hey, you can get the 1964 emulator and use the Mouse Inject to play GoldenEye/Perfect Dark with KBAM. GoldenEye X is so much fun :P

Yeah, the one I have seems to be specially designed to run GE/PD with keyboard and mouse. idk anything sbout the emulator itself though, so there could be other versions, that's just the version my friend sent me. Yeah, it's pretty fun :D

What recommendations do you have for which controller/joystick to use? I'm currently using 1st party controller with GC-style stick and the sensitivity is killing me. I need something that will allow more precise movement, but also not wear out quickly.

You can but it will handicap you as cheats are forbidden.

why u have to shoot 7 times at military archives?
To get the guard to open the door. Usually when you're shooting a certain number of times between doors it's for that reason.

They can indeed. They do it several times in a Silo run for example. Goose even explains that during the Silo part of this video.

Whats the stance on emulator runs on this game? Personally I cant stand to play fps games with a controller, and techniques like look down are used to prevent lag, that would be unnecessary on an emulator?
Runs done on the original hardware are taken the most seriously in the community, generally. Usually there's different categories of runs.
Emulator isn't accepted because it can't recreate the game accurately I.e. the lag being eliminated as an issue so the times are unrealistic. Another example would be it's easier to cheat on emulator as well. Hope this helps
