  • This video shows you how to become a substitute teacher in California following the approval of AB-130. The new option to meet the basic skills requirement applies to all teacher candidates seeking to substitute teach and/or enroll in a credential program.
    For those applying to credential programs: private institutions (e.g.: Nationals University) MAY set their own standards for admission by requiring passing CBEST scores.

      @@liliyapetrosyan928 I didn’t contact the county, but instead I reached out to the districts I was considering applying to and BSRs are currently waived until July ‘24, however, said districts HR personnel also told me that they first look at applicants with credentials or the emergency permit. They aren’t really looking at people who don’t meet those requirements. And it sounded like they also didn’t want to help people apply for an emergency credential. But I’m sure not all districts are like that.

    Christine, I’ve searched the internet and can’t find answers to my questions so I turn to you for help please 🙏🏼😭
    1. Is the 30 day emergency sub permit only doable in either *elementary*, OR *secondary* subbing? You can’t do both with the one permit?
    2. The permit is sent to basically the state right? The permit will allow you to sub in California in general? Or is it like one permit per district you apply to?
    I’m a special education teacher assistant and I really think I can be a great Sub, this process is just a little confusing but I really appreciate your guidance and help in advance!! 💛

    • @christinepia
      @christinepia  2 года назад

      Hello :) The answer to your first question is in the video at 3:52 - 4:08. For your second question, I explain the process in the video! The permit is not “sent to the state”. The state of CA issues it to you. You can work for multiple districts within the state with one permit but most districts require you to register with the county first.

      Hi Luz! How exciting!! Although experience does help, you only need a bachelor’s degree and to prove that you satisfied the basic skills requirement as I explained in the video. I know SOME school districts do ask prospective substitutes to submit a resume and recommendation letters. However, you can communicate lack of experience to the hiring department and ask to submit a personal/cover letter instead. Hope that helps!

      That's amazing, Donika! I'm happy to hear that :) The process would be the same, however the basic skills requirement must still be satisfied with either a B or higher in qualifying coursework or passing CBEST results (or a mix of both). Keep in mind that some credential programs (mostly private like National's University) will set their own standards by still requiring the CBEST. I recommend checking out credential programs at CSUs, UCs, or Cal State Teach.

    Thanks for the information about this. I just wanted to know what did you mean exactly by "County's Credential Office" ? Is that applying to a specific district like Los Angeles Unified School District or something else?

    • @christinepia
      @christinepia  3 года назад +1

      thank you for your question, Rowin! To be more specific, I’m referring to the County Superintendent of Schools. So for LA, you would be reaching out to LACOE (possibly by phone or email) and they will direct you on the steps for applying to the CTC for your permit. Once your 30-day permit is issued, you can apply to multiple districts under LA County, for example: LAUSD. You’ll specifically want to take the route of going through the county so you can apply and work at multiple districts of your choice. Does that make sense?

    • @christinepia
      @christinepia  3 года назад

      When you call, I recommend asking to be transferred to a credential analyst. They’ll review your coursework

    • @RowinDincht
      @RowinDincht 2 года назад

      @@christinepia It's made sense, but also held me up. It seems that Basic Skills Requirement Waiver (41-BSR) at this point in time can only be filled out for those who are currently enrolled students by colleges. When I went through the LACOE's Credential Analyst, they basically sent me the 41-BSR and informed me that colleges fill out the form and I send it back in. This is all been a trip for me.

    • @christinepia
      @christinepia  2 года назад +1

      @Rowin Dincht This law isn’t a basic skills requirement “waiver”. You still have to satisfy the basic skills requirement, this is just a new option. You have to know what you are asking for to avoid miscommunication with the county.
      And to your theory: I am not in college, as I already graduated and I received my 30-Day permit with this route. I knew of several other success stories with this route as well before I made the video. Try sharing the references in my description. Good luck!

      @@christinepia , hi! Quick question. I’ve already been hired by a district and they asked me to get my 30 day credential. Completely lost. I did not pass the math section but passed the English section first try of the cbest. Do I have to fill out a specific form? I’m pretty sure I also have qualifying classes as well. I’ve been applying via the ctc website, but do I need to be calling the county office? I’m so confused.

    Also, would you know if I can be a high school teacher without having to earn a credential? I'm working towards a masters degree currently and was wondering if completing it or time invested as a substitute would earn a position as a full time high school teacher.

      Hi Ryan! for your first question, I explain the process in the video :) for your second question, you’ll have to reach out to specific districts to find out if they’ll make an exception for you. Otherwise, you must get your single subject credential.

      Contact the school district where you want to work. They will guide you through the process of getting your substitute teaching credential. As far as I know, private schools may allow you to become a teacher without a teaching credential. And they might even help you pay for credential classes at a college.

    When you say Bachelors Degree, can it be in any field? Since you can only be substitute teacher 30 days out of the school year what are you doing for income? How long would it take to get that teacher credentials?

    • @christinepia
      @christinepia  2 года назад

      Yes, it can be a Bachelors Degree in any field! Also, the 30-day permit isn’t implying you can only sub for 30 days out of the school year (check out 3:52). You typically have 180 days in a school year in California, so you’ll have up to 180 opportunities to generate income. As far as the full-time teaching credential, it depends on the program length at your school of choice.

    • @christinepia

      Hi Michael! Great question. Many credential programs are setting their own standards for subject matter competency despite the new law allowing relevant degree programs to satisfy the requirements. My suggestion would be to email your unofficial transcripts to admissions staff at the programs you wish to apply to so they can confirm whether or not you need to take the Math CSET. Good luck!

    I’m confused what is this test? I’m a substitute in Tennessee and my only requirements was to pass a background check? I know it’s different per state. But you had to have a BA to sub before? That’s crazy. In Tennessee you can sub K-12 with no college education at all.

    • @christinepia
      @christinepia  2 года назад

      The CBEST is a test to show basic skills proficiency. It’s taken by prospective substitute teachers and non-liberal arts majors seeking a teaching credential. California aims to not put underprepared teachers in the position of teaching students, however, bc of the current teacher shortage, things are changing and they’re now putting untrained and non credentialed teachers/subs in these positions.
