My husband and I just built a new home, ranch on a full basement that's kind of modern farmhouse/ craftsman. Huge covered front porch with maple porch bead ceilings, huge beams, e.t.c. I have learned SO MUCH from your channel! I have a complimentary color scheme of teals, aquas, rusts and oranges... lots of natural materials, and furniture that combines unique chunky antiques with newer MSM pieces. Im loving it!! Thanks for all your tips! The knowledge I've gained has really given me confidence in my choices. Thank you, so much!!
I bought a sofa from a company called Highland House. I bought the sofa and loveseat. In addition to that, I cleaned an office and two restrooms for TWO YEARS to pay for these pieces. I want to say that it was around $5,800 for the two pieces and that’s a whole hell of a lot of money for my salary range, YET, IT WAS WORTH ITS WEIGHT IN GOLD!! This company and product was amazing. I had trouble with one core (cushion) losing its shape about six years into owning. I called the company to inquire about purchasing the inside (core) and they sent me the one at no charge. TEN years I owned that sofa, and would buy from them again any day. This is a true story.

I have the Ceni sofa and it's SO comfortable with removable covers. Article is definitely a solid brand offering well-made furniture. Thank you for not mentioning West Elm! Originally had one of their 'contract grade' $ectional$ that was poorly made with unraveling stitching and cheap cushions. Any company that doesn't show their customer ratings isn't trustworthy. Appreciate your other recommendations too like CB2 👌🏽
I like your Mum's chairs with all the space, I like having space between chairs instead of being huddled together, you can all just hang out , relax together and not always have to make conversation. Love your videos by the way. Rachel xx
You are the first and also an Article superstar! ⭐️ Tell them I'm very expensive but worth every penny. Who am I kidding? I'll take a free $20 pillow. 🤣
@@shirleya4510 I am considering the Ceni but had a loose cushion couch years ago and really didnt like having to adjust and tidy the cushions. Some of the reviews mention that. Do they move? Even a little would probably irritate me.
Upset eating, while you're in the lunch room, can you also mention creating a system to fix loose cushions into place? And under your breath repeatedly say "attached cushions" in a low hypnotic voice?
Hi Nick! I am considering purchasing the Paxton Sofa from Arhaus (about $4350). I saw it in person and it is STUNNING and fits my transitional (leaning toward traditional style) but I am wondering about the quality. Do you have any thoughts on the quality and whether or no its worth the money in that sense? The frame is cross directional hardwood laminate
I don't know a bunch about that specific sofa but "cross directional hardwood laminate" seems like a fancy way of saying plywood or some time of engineered wood. Not a deal breaker, but something to be skeptical of. How are the reviews? if you love it and you've always wanted it, then I would take the plunge.

Like... Twister! on Saturday afternoon with juice boxes and KidsBop6 playing from the game console or Twister! On Saturday night with cocktails and a fishbowl full of keys? Either way, I’m going to recommend top grain leather on everything and a nice, soft *washable* rug... for traction.
Id also recommend checking out your city for furniture makers! I live in Texas and found a couch maker/wholesaler to create the perfect design for my home. Love this! Super helpful since I am in the market for a couch. It would be so interesting to see a video for difficult rooms and how to design them and find a functional layout. For example my living room is a long rectangle shape. One short wall is a fireplace with library shelves, one long wall has a very large window that’s almost ceiling to floor and take up most of that wall space, the other long wall has the 2 openings for the kitchen and the dining room so it’s a partial wall to work with, and the other short wall are the stairs (quad level home, one set of stairs goes down, one set goes up). It’s proving difficult to position furniture! I really appreciate your videos! Keep em coming!
I ve just started watching your videos a couple of days ago and I have been addicted ever since. Myself and my partner are in London UK and about to sell up and move to Dorset. I have a couch that is like the Gather couch. Because I usually live in small spaces it does 3 things. First, it is a couch. Second, it’s a pull out bed and third there is storage in the chaise part. I’m needing a new couch again. Your ideas on how to choose a sofa really helped.
One sofa you didn't review was a "cat-proof" one!!! Fur, snags, crushed cushions etc. If you find anything in this category, please let me know!!!!! Love your videos; really helpful (and entertaining!) And, the performance velvet doesn’t stain when the beasts toss their hair balls on the couch!! No water marks from cleaning. This stuff must be made by NASA!!!!
Very individual to the cat and their scratching tendencies, but I find pleather/leather, velvet, and microfibre to be textures the cat won't scratch. Don't make my mistake of getting my first couch in tweed - basically a giant scratching post in that material hehe.
I know that problem. I am pretty happy with my Söderhamn couch from Ikea. It is not the greatest quality, but definitely worth the price. The Samsta and the Finnsta fabrics (I have both) are both pretty smooth so the fur doesn't get caught on it and with the Finnsta fabric, if my cats do scratch on it and pull a thread I can pull that thread back in. Also you can buy seperate covers for the like the armchairs and switch them out if they get too scratched up. Also it is pretty easy to buy different covers even if Ikea discontinues that couch, because there are other companies that sell them.
I got a grand Charleston sofa from Pottery Barn years ago. Changed out the slipcovers once and I still LOVE it- so comfortable (I have twice had living rooms about 23’ x 12’ So plenty of room) Arranged perpendicular to the fireplace, with two chairs facing it, antique coffee table i between and a game space behind tue couch
Very timely as I am researching new couches. Where I live, grey, grey or grey is available atm, but waiting for some colours to drop. Thank you so much for your time 🙂
With all the people giving out advice for decorating on RUclips., I find it unbelievable that no one is sponsoring you. You are great your ideas are great. I enjoy your honesty and down to earth approach. And you have great taste. And your mother didn’t pay me to say this! LOL
I love the final sofa. It reminds me of the sofa (in the study??) at Eltham Palace in London. It was a medieval palace extended and refurbished in 1920s Art Deco style. It’s an English Heritage property so I’m sure there’s pictures out there. In our (generally) smaller British homes we have to have our furniture pushed back to the walls, otherwise we’d be knocking knees! Having said that the styles you showed didn’t seem as big as the marshmallow type, so an ideal video and choice for us. Ta!
Love this, Nick! Please, we need a vid on how to choose accent chairs to go with our sofas. Should they be the same color? Should we get chairs from the same set or mix it up? Help!
The measuring tip at 2:30, making sure the sofa will work well in the space that you have, is good advice...I would also add: make sure it will fit through your doorway :) Edit: "Don't go in that description down below and start clicking on those links and be like oh I love that couch". ...He reads my mind !!!
Please Make a video on sequence on buying stuff for living room, meaning what should you buys first and what should follow? Thanks Nick for great ideas!
Hi Nick!! I'd love a video on "HOW TO CHOOSE COUCH MATERIAL (FABRIC/LEATHER/VELVET)" - just an idea. I am shopping for a couch and could use more of your advice. :D
Hey Nick, I’m actually sofa shopping right now, so thanks for the tips and recommendations! Also, would love to see a video about Grandmillennial design and antiques. I know you don’t care for traditional design trends generally, but you have such a fun perspective and I’d love to hear your thoughts.
I have both the ceni sectional from article and also an oak dining table from them. I've had the couch for 2 years with my monster of a child and now a second one, and I must say, the quality is fantastic. I could take off the covers of the cushions and throw them in the wash and dryer and they come out brand new and do not shrink. I love the mid century minimalist look. I'm a big believer that just because you have kids, it doesn't mean your home should look like a preschool. I'm someone that hates to have alot of furniture. I have one wall decor in my living room, a couch, a dining table and a TV hooked to the wall. Nothing else. It looks beautiful and to make a statement, I have a sage Persian rug thT makes it so I do not need any other decor pieces because it draws your eye to the center
Thanks for this video--I'm thinking of buying a new sofa this summer and your video helps. BTW--my mother is the same way about that dusty pink carpet.
My family of three live in a 2 bedroom tiny so we have to be super practical. We chose to buy a sofa bed from a well known Australian furniture company which is online. I took the chance to buy it because we needed a sofa bed for our main and only sofa for guests or when we are sick and need to sleep separately. I’m soo happy with the purchase as it’s a nice neutral colour which suits our space and overall style. It also is comfortable and it’s a quick transition to queen bed which is also comfy. I’m glad we made the move from a marshmallow sofa to this sleek modern sofa.
My boyfriend and I have settled for a recliner sofa. We sat on it and loved all the fluffiness (kinda has a modern slash old style like what he showed in the beginning) but we can see ourselves relaxing and watching tv together. Sorta marshmallow couch but more modern and less poofy
maybe ad in some information about: - Choice of fabric and practicalities (dirt, touch to the skin, etc.) - Choice of foam inside the sofa (durability, dints, etc.) - Use it to actively sit or to lounge - Hight of couches (e.g. related to a window and indowsill that might be behind it) - Space between the seating area and the floor (in terms of making the room look more pacious or not and vaccuum cleaning). - Horizontal and vertical lines in a sofa. I have seen sofa's that are quite wide and have low arm rests, but the pillows of the back are long and high. So the vertical and horizontal are a bit conflicting.
If going with a sofa+armchair arrangement, should they perfectly match like same color, same collection? Or is it better to mix and match within a certain style/palette?
Thanks so much for the video. We are needing to purchase several new couches. I agree with a lot of the other comments...I would love a part 2 or even 3. Lol. Definitely, recommendations for kids and maybe some more couch choices that still have a nod to the traditional or transitional but still modern and fresh design but not mid century modern and not a low back please 😄

I recently moved into a ranch house from the 50's on the Western portion of Los Angeles. Had to get rid of the old couch, which was a behemoth. I got a Design Within Reach couch. I love it. But I really had to spend about 2 months with my behemoth couch just figuring out lay-outs. And the key was in measuring things very precisely.
I would love a video on how to figure out the layout for a space. Maybe a few different rooms with different shapes and need and what you'd look for and plan. Thanks for this awesomely helpful video! I saved it for when we are shopping in a few weeks.

I like nice things but I also tend to look at the practical side of everything while some couches are nice they’d be destroyed by my kids pretty quickly. Keep up the great work and thank you for the reply. 💕🌺💕
“Your taste is your taste, but...” lollll
SHOTS FIRED 😂😂😂
He totally gets away with this casual wrecking also. 😂
I should add THIS IS WHY I LOVE NICK!! 🔥🔥😂
I walk a tightrope in every video.
@@Nick_Lewis , and what a lovely performance it is. Great work, brother. Haha
The big open space in the middle of the living room was for wrestling with your siblings!
Your mom made a thunder dome for her entertainment
What are you doing step-bro?
Don't worry, I'm just "wrestling"
Nope, it's for playing lava.
@@luingalls that sounds like fun too!
🤣
My parents have been in sofa search for the past 3 days. I can't even believe you listened to my prayers!
You need all the sponsors! Your videos are so informative and so well done.
Glad you like them! Regardless - I'm having fun!
As a complete noob you're a great entry into interior design! Keep up the good work
Your the FIRST DESIGNER to mention the marshmallow couch!!!!!!! I’m sticking to this channel 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 (Nick Lewis ❤️)
I’m in desperate need of advice about windows treatments! 😓 That is, regular blinds, celular blinds, Roman style, Roll ups, etc. etc. etc. I am all over the place 😓. Nick, please make a video about window treatments 🤩🤩🤩🙏🏻🙏🏻.
I co-sign on this
I can't help it. I just love you. You speak to the everyday person. I am learning and UNDERSTANDING so much from you. I could easily choose a white paint now (and have) and that's saying something! Keep up the awesome videos.
Rachel xx
Omg am I the first!? Yes! Hello 👋 welcome to the comments. Also another great video Nick 🤩 I actually work at Article, I'll put in a good word
You are the first and also an Article superstar! ⭐️ Tell them I'm very expensive but worth every penny. Who am I kidding? I'll take a free $20 pillow. 🤣
I 💗Article furniture! Have the Culla bedroom set, Ceni sofa, and Seno Round Dining Table.
Nick what do you think of making mood boards before starting to design a room?
Love it! Need to do a video on it.
@@Nick_Lewis That's great! I really look forward to see the video :)
@@Nick_Lewis yes please I'd love to know how to make one
Hi thanks for sharing. I loved some of the couches but I like a couch with a higher back. There doesn’t seem to be much height on those couches.
Yes exactly!! Doesn't anyone like to read anymore? Plus my husband is 6'3" and hates any couch he can't put his head against.
Hey Nick! I just wanted to stop by and congratulate you on this brilliant channel. I've only just met you and I am marathoning your videos. I love that you are so direct and straight to the point, whilst also giving us lots of details and supporting your tips with such deep knowledge about interior design concepts, decor styles, materials, etc. You are also very authentic, your personality is all over your videos and that is surely one of the reasons why your channel is growing so fast. Thank you for the great content and I hope you get the sponsorships from brands that you love.
I am jumping out of my chair.
When you pointed out the Sherwood for japandi style it made me so happy. I’ve been eyes that couch for my japandi aesthetic. Literally can’t see any other sofa in my space. ❤️
I don't know if this is helpful feedback but I just really like you. It's a joy learning from you!
Heyyy!!! I just wanted to say that you are such a nice person and your videos make my day! I love your demeanor and your tone and you seem very kind!
Where have you been!!! You're a hidden gem!!! Your channel is wonderful, informative, and entertaining. Always looking forward to seeing your videos.
Just found your channel and love it. Recently moved back to the States from Vancouver and we sold EVERYTHING and are starting from scratch so this along with some of your other videos have been so super helpful. So glad I stumbled upon you.
Thank you!! Could you make a video on how to select rugs? (profile, color, style etc.) 🙏
Twister. The space in the middle of the living room was for playing Twister.
Like... Twister! on Saturday afternoon with juice boxes and KidsBop6 playing from the game console or Twister! On Saturday night with cocktails and a fishbowl full of keys? Either way, I’m going to recommend top grain leather on everything and a nice, soft *washable* rug... for traction.
I just assumed it was because mom wanted the kids sitting on the other side of the room, not up in her face all the time, lol!
Id also recommend checking out your city for furniture makers! I live in Texas and found a couch maker/wholesaler to create the perfect design for my home. They gave me the ability to choose everything from the shape, size down to the inch, fabric, color, cushion softness all for the same price (or cheaper) of a Article or CB2.
I’m currently re decorating my moms house and every time I’m on a new element, you drop a new video that is SO helpful! You are the best Nick. Thank you thank you thank you!
"I mean your taste is your taste, but, well....They're ugly". That cracked me up. Trying to be honest but not brutally so. It was sweetly done and made me laugh. Love your videos and have found them very helpful and informative. Great work!
Give this man a show on HGTV, pronto. Nick, you are so knowledgeble, witty, and entertaining. Not to mention chock full of great ideas. Article.com should definitely be throwing some free products/cash your way.
Love your videos. You should look through the Architectural Digest videos with celebrities house tours and review them.
I'm thinking of doing react videos!
@@Nick_Lewis YES please!!!
Your videos are so calming. Maybe it's because there is no crazy loud music. Just your voice and nice imagery. So relaxing.
I just discovered your channel and been binging it. I love your sense of humour and your Canadianisms.
1. I love to have you witty, sassy guy in my life. A lot! Thank you for your channel. ❤
2. The Sherwood (?) sofa is a piece of art! I also like the last one. But I'd always try a sofa before spending money on something that might not be comfortable for me in the end.
Nick: "You're entitled to your opinion, but, you're wrong" LOL i love you
I plan on doing a video on layouts too! I touched on it in this video but lots more to discuss!
@@Nick_Lewis oooooh! I’m so excited for that video! Thanks for all the wonderful knowledge you give us. 😁
Useful as always.
The fabric on my sofa is kinda velvety. Got it second hand. Hand-wipes and we're good to go. High enough. Deep enough. Super comfy to sleep on.
I ve just started watching your videos a couple of days ago and I have been addicted ever since. Myself and my partner are in London UK and about to sell up and move to Dorset. It's a fresh start and your knowledge and ideas are incredibly valuable and you've helped me find the exact style I ve been looking for when creating my new venture in our new home. Please keep the vids coming. Love them. Thank you Nick
You definitely deserve to be sponsored by Article. I subscribed to you earlier on in the pandemic and it's wonderful seeing your channel grow every week. You deserve it! (❤️ your fellow Vancouverite)
I have a couch that is like the Gather couch. Because I usually live in small spaces it does 3 things. First, it is a couch. Second, it’s a pull out bed and third there is storage in the chaise part. I’m needing a new couch again. Your ideas on how to choose a sofa really helped.
This video is a Godsend cause I’ve been shopping for a couch for over a year and this year I’m finally going to buy one. I need help
Nick! Love your channel how has the Ceni couch held up since this video? A lot of the reviews mention easy pilling of the fabric
I have four cats so I know what you are talking about😻😄
Very individual to the cat and their scratching tendencies, but I find pleather/leather, velvet, and microfibre to be textures the cat won't scratch. Don't make my mistake of getting my first couch in tweed - basically a giant scratching post in that material hehe.
Yes! I mentioned this in my post before I saw yours. I feel like I have to replace my couch every few years because of this! Any suggestions audience?
Yes I second this. Cat owner here ☺️
I got a grand Charleston sofa from Pottery Barn years ago. Changed out the slipcovers once and I still LOVE it- so comfortable (I have twice had living rooms about 23’ x 12’ So plenty of room) Arranged perpendicular to the fireplace, with two chairs facing it, antique coffee table i between and a game space behind tue couch
I have been searching for a high back couch it seems impossible to find style with this want/need
Your honesty and transparency is really fun and refreshing. I keep coming back to your videos because of these qualities! Thank you :)
Love your content! ❤️. Suggestion for future content.....compact sofas or short Loveseats....please!
Great idea! I think I will also touch on more affordable sofas too!
And chairs for those of us with tiny studios that aren’t too big but comfortable to binge watch or read in!!
Very timely as I am researching new couches. Where I live, grey, grey or grey is available atm, but waiting for some colours to drop. Thank you so much for your time 🙂
Enjoyed this! How about doing something on art deco design?
Great idea!
With all the people giving out advice for decorating on RUclips., I find it unbelievable that no one is sponsoring you. You are great your ideas are great. I enjoy your honesty and down to earth approach. And you have great taste. And your mother didn’t pay me to say this! LOL
Please do a video on choosing window treatments, thx. Love your channel and your personality 👍🏼
Thanks and will do!
Wow I never think about these things… Nick your amazing… I just appreciate you and the time you take to tell us this!
Ta!
Dear Nick, i just bought an apartment. Your videos are the only ones that dont give me anxiety regarding decorating. Cheers!
So excited for a Recliner recommendation! I need it for a medical condition, but hate my ugly poofy recliner.
Yes I had to get one in there!
Love this, Nick! Please, we need a vid on how to choose accent chairs to go with our sofas. Should they be the same color? Should we get chairs from the same set or mix it up? Help!
The measuring tip at 2:30, making sure the sofa will work well in the space that you have, is good advice...I would also add: make sure it will fit through your doorway :)
Edit: "Don't go in that description down below and start clicking on those links and be like oh I love that couch". ...He reads my mind !!!
How do you feel about vintage couches for the quality purpose.
"Your taste is your taste, but they're ugly." 😂😂😂😂😂 I love this video.
Please
Make a video on sequence on buying stuff for living room, meaning what should you buys first and what should follow? Thanks Nick for great ideas!
I also grew up in the house where the furniture had that "under arrest" look- up against the walls!
Perfect timing, I’ve been on the hunt for a sofa but I’m so particular I haven’t found one as yet. I may have to get one made. 😕$$$$$$
My boyfriend and I have settled for a recliner sofa. We sat on it and loved all the fluffiness (kinda has a modern slash old style like what he showed in the beginning) but we can see ourselves relaxing and watching tv together.
Sorta marshmallow couch but more modern and less poofy
Recliner couches are DA BOMB!!!
maybe ad in some information about:
- Choice of fabric and practicalities (dirt, touch to the skin, etc.)
- Choice of foam inside the sofa (durability, dints, etc.)
- Use it to actively sit or to lounge
- Hight of couches (e.g. related to a window and indowsill that might be behind it)
- Space between the seating area and the floor (in terms of making the room look more pacious or not and vaccuum cleaning).
- Horizontal and vertical lines in a sofa. I have seen sofa's that are quite wide and have low arm rests, but the pillows of the back are long and high. So the vertical and horizontal are a bit conflicting.
Fluffy big soft cozy recliner is the most comfortable type of couch. Its soooo comfortable that the look won't bother you after you sit on it.
Good points - I like the Sherwood. If you are older posture support is important, as opposed to less support.
Is there a general rule for how big a couch should be compared to room size?
It has to be smaller than the room. Does that help?
🤣🤣🤣🚮
@@sp-pz8uc yes, but I was hoping for some pointers!
HA!!!!! omg genuinely feel you with the sponsor thing. I would also gladly take an article sofa!! let's just keep putting it out there into the universe! 🤣🤣i'll take the cigar sofa in ivory, thaaaaanks!
That Curvo couch is super cool. But how would you ever take a nap on that thing?
I recently moved into a ranch house from the 50's on the Western portion of Los Angeles. Had to get rid of the old couch, which was a behemoth. I got a Design Within Reach couch. I love it. But I really had to spend about 2 months with my behemoth couch just figuring out lay-outs. And the key was in measuring things very precisely.
I would love a video on how to figure out the layout for a space. Maybe a few different rooms with different shapes and need and what you'd look for and plan.
Thanks for this awesomely helpful video! I saved it for when we are shopping in a few weeks.
I really love the Crate and Barrel Sherwood sofa. I’m so disappointed that it’s been discontinued. Do you know where I can find one?
Love this video; thank you!!! And I’m wishing for you Many Sponsors in 2021!!!!
Aww thanks! I'm having fun even without the sponsors!
Thank you for this video! I can't afford a designer and as a teacher who just went through a year of teaching during Covid restrictions, you are my happy place for help with changing my space on a budget.
The shearling fabric on the CB2 sofa gives me nightmares! That fabric is nothing but a hair trap! Everything gets caught in it and it never comes clean. but the design is stunning! Nothing for the traditionalists in the crowd. :(
I agree. My house was built in the 1890s and I’d love something that combines that Victorian era with a modern twist.
It got in for style points, but as I mentioned, I'd go with the white.
Could you please talk about choosing a colour/fabric for a couch and what you should consider? Furnishing my first unfurnished flat, I love colour and striking shape but I don't know how to choose a couch that's versatile enough if I want to redecorate in future...
Hi Nick, are you familiar with MADE.com? If so, what's your opinion on their collection/couches?
Yes please and thank you.
It's from the UK right? Beautiful designs but I'm unfamiliar with the quality. What do you think of them?
@@Nick_Lewis Thank you for the reply. 😊 Yes, it's a UK brand but they ship to several European countries, so I thought maybe you bought/tried some of their products when you lived in Amsterdam. I love their designs as well but I have never bought anything there, so I cannot judge their quality. I'm thinking of buying a couch from them, so I guess I'll find out...
(Lots of love from the Netherlands, love your videos Nick 🤍 )
Great choices! am always confused between a sofa bed and a good posture sofa as we spend most of time at living room curling in couch but I do want to change my habit of laying down always as it’s not good for my back
Those marshmallow couches showed up years ago and for some reason have stuck and stuck and stuck. Never understood that.
They sell
They certainly ARE ugly but they are also COMFORTABLE
They are functional and there are a lot of people with zero taste or very weird taste that just care for functional and less about how it looks. People like us, that have an interest in design and aesthetics tend to forget about that. Some people just don’t give a shit how stuff looks and those are happy people
Agreed, I think my audience cares about the aesthetics more than your average person that is more concerned with practicality (cup holders?) and comfort. I mean, crocs sell, right? 😂
@@Nick_Lewis 😂😂
