    Wonderful performance of one of the greatest late Romantic symphonies. Petrenko is a very exciting conductor; a good choice for the next music director.

    Sounds like a truly great performance. A true irony if ever there was one - from the "Land without Music" came two of the greatest symphonies ever written, Edward Elgar's lst and 2nd. :-)

      _The_ two greatest symphonies.

      @@Phantomrasberryblowe I wouldn't go quite that far, but I do consider the Second Symphony as Elgar's masterpiece. I hear it as having been written from some deep experience. The slow movement has that deep and uneasy introspection that reflects this, and the finale I hear as a perfect summing up after all we've been through.
      Unfortunately, after 60 years of acquaintance with both works, even to the extent of following both with a score, I simply cannot and have never been able to regard the First in the same light. I hear it as a collection of effects having little or no relation to one another; that the composer was simply out to show the world that "he could do it."
      I'm sorry, but that is the way I hear these works. I am aware that the response of many others is quite the opposite, but the two works impress me the way they do, and I simply cannot regard them as equivalent of one another.

    I subscribed to hear the complete work and this is one of the finest performances of Elgar's 2nd Symphony I've ever heard. Bravo to Maestro Petrenko and the Berlin PO for a wonderful performance. It ought to be issued on DVD!

    Music is a language of gestures and emphasis expression! Somebody who holds a batoon in front of an orchestra, has to be able to TRANSMIT this complicated message to his fellow musicians ! Be sure that Kirill Petrenko fullfills this task with such a perfection, that we listeners, are overwhelmed with musical evidence, ever since !!!

Was tun, Leiter nur lehrreich. Bitte beachten Sie die Mr. Petrenko.

    Thanks for Berliner Philharmoniker for uploading Petrenko's video.
    Mr. Petrenko is surely better than other potential candidates. He is not over-arrogant, not try to copy some Legend conductors, and he has a little bit higher ability over some other candidates.
    Mr. Petrenko's maybe a little bit better than Mr. Simon Rattle, but the same worrying things may still come.When Beethoven and Mahler comes to him, as the same stupid gossip will be come again.
    So we should actually find better composers, but not better conductors. What conductor do is only educational. Please take care of Mr. Petrenko.

    O Mensch, did Petrenko ever capture the ache of the English heart with Elgar's nostalgic lyric theme starting at 1:11. I would imagine London will be calling on him to guest conduct after Berlin gets their full imprint of him, if that's possible.

    Yowza, way too rushed, he floats over all the nuance like a luxury liner on autopilot. There's no lilt, no nuance, really disappointing. A beautiful sound, as one would expect, but he clearly doesn't "get" Elgar. There are many, many better interpretations, in the last decade or two we have been blessed with recordings of what is a great, great symphony. On RUclips, try the other Petrenko - Vasily with the RLPO, much, much, much better, the orchestra sounds so much better and suited to Elgar, and Vasily clearly "gets" Elgar. Still good to see Elgar being played in Berlin, I certainly couldn't imagine von Karajan or Abbado conducting Elgar. Did Rattle?

  • @artshouldbebeautiful6407
    @artshouldbebeautiful6407 9 лет назад +5

    Strange choice. Thielemann is so much better. Maybe the orchestra doesn't want a strong leader, but rather someone who will stand there and look like they're doing something monumental on camera. He has pretty dramatic movements and expressions, showmanship. Ick.
    That's no Karajan.

    • @MarkHatlestad
      @MarkHatlestad 9 лет назад +35

      ArtShouldBeBeautiful This decision was made solely by the musicians, who masters of their craft that actually have worked with said conductors. And Berlin is no floundering orchestra lacking in marketable pizazz, urged by the board of directors to hire someone who will push tickets. Therefore one must conclude that the decision was made primarily on the working dynamic between the conductor and the orchestra (both in terms of musicality and, of course, some personal politics).
      While I admire Thielemann, I really do think Petrenko is an excellent choice, and I'm excited to see the orchestra's output under him.

    • @artshouldbebeautiful6407
      @artshouldbebeautiful6407 9 лет назад +1

      Mark Hatlestad Well, actually, things are making a little more sense to me now. Apparently there weren't as many choices at their disposal as one might think, and Petrenko was not at all a first choice, not even second, so it's not quite the way it's made to sound, that out of all the conductors in the world they picked him, which didn't make any sense to me at all. Well it was not quite like that. Anyway.. they're not the only apple in the orchard, so who cares..

    • @mcchen1992
      @mcchen1992 9 лет назад +9

      ArtShouldBeBeautiful Even Thielemann is not a Karajan type strong leader. Thielemann is relatively conservative and has narrower repertoire, he is suit for local German orchestras, but not such a international one.
