- A 1986 Chevy 1 Ton Dually truck has been left here for 22 years. It’s old and tired but I’m gonna attempt to pick it back up and help it walk again.

Dieseltrucks is equipped with two batteries.
Sounds like the starter is to tight. Take down the bellhousing and you can see the starter gear. Might be wrong starter or need shims.
And you always need to fit the rear bracket on the starter or else the starter can tear apart that engine block.
And then you need to test the glowplugs for easier start.
Glow cycle and then start.
Had most of your issues earlier with my trucks

The shorts definitely help. That's where I just came from.
The battery was always on the passenger side on a squarebody with a gas engine, but they never had fender mounted starter solenoids like a Ford. GM mounted their starter solenoids to the starter motor. Diesels had two batteries.

The diesel chevys had 2 battery trays one on each side because diesels need 2 battetys

Yep, 73-79 style front end but with square headlights instead of round headlights. Only year this front end had square headlights. I was going to say this but you beat me to it

Those old diesels will smoke like a freight train after sitting but it will clear up once you run it down the road!
Good thing about Diesel is it Can sit unlike gas and still fuel the truck.
Sucks something is rattling but those old Detroits aren’t as worthy as a old 7.3
My truck did the same thing it sat for 13 years start and stalled about 6 times before it would stay running

Starting fluid is fine for diesels they have ones you can put on Tractors to help start on cold days
Tractors are generally direct injection diesels. It’s the indirect injection diesel where starting fluid can caus problems
Turn on the headlights and leave them on, good idea

My uncle would buy these trucks and immediately pull that 6.2 without even attempting to start it and toss in the nearest V8 gas.
I used starting fluid once on my 6.2. Starter broke clean off. One bolt broke, the other stripped the threads. There wasn't any bracket on it

Try putting 12v directly to the start terminal on the starter
The starter relay is under the ashtray area of the dash.
GM used a heater relay on those trucks. The contacts welded themselves on alot.

The "C" code 6.2l diesels were set up an egr valve for emissions

We’re 8 months removed from skid steer tear down, how long til we see the rebuild. Super curious about that injector pump.
😂 machine shop keeps telling me it’s gonna be the next week. Then the next. Lol. It’s insane. It’s coming tho. Can’t leave it apart forever but it sure seems that way.
@@BradenBuildz ok fair enough. I’m about to break into the same build on a 277B. It runs but knocks so I’m guessing same issue. I’m likely going to go bare block deck it then new head and full reman.
@@mikepletscher4663 wouldn’t run it if I was you at all. (If you still are) those 3034 blocks are getting hard to come by. I have a spare engine I bought off marketplace for 500$ tho. So that was a huge score
I have found that Oven cleaner works better than the products you are using at about the same cost.
Try hitting the starter with a hammer it’s prob sticking from corrosion

Are you sure it's a 1986 truck? The reason I ask is the front clip is pre '81, the dashpad is pre '81, and the door panels are pre '81. Not to say all these parts couldn't have been retrofitted, but it just doesn't look like a 1986 chevy truck.

I don't trust diesel after my Duramax Diesel broke down twice once in a parking lot and again after the fuel pump was replaced and we got home it would not start again on the same day.
