Primer Paint for Beginners - 2K High Build Primer Application on the Honda Step #7

  • In this episode follow along as I got through some automotive primer basics. The epoxy primer sat for a little over 40 hours before I had a chance to tackle it with some high build, so I scuffed it to ensure proper adhesion. With the putty glaze, I filled the pin holes and minor imperfections to straighten the panels a little more too. Is primer needed? The answer is yes, simply applying paint over filler work will only show the imperfections of the filler applications. And it’s not recommended to throw on layer after layer of base or single stage as it only would cost more money on material and be more work to fade away blemishes. Some of my previous videos also show some bondo for beginners, working with short stand fillers and lightweight fillers. I know of few of you have also asked what psi should I paint with and for myself, I have juggled around with my spray settings. With the epoxy primer, I sprayed at 30 psi out the gun and with the high build primer I sprayed at 28 psi. In my next video, I will go over a few hvlp basics that have helped me during my whole painting process. Honestly painting car grey primer has come out looking pretty nice where I have been pondering the idea of keeping it grey, but I have settled on a car finally and soon I think I am ready to reveal that color with all of you. Still have a lot of block sanding to do on the Honda Civic, going to start with some 220 grit, block it down and then re prime and re sand with 320 and 400 before applying base/clear.
    I wanted to reach out and thank Honda Vlogs for mentioning me in his previous video. If you all are looking for a great channel that recaps the RUclips Honda community and more I strongly suggest that you all check out his channel.

    So many debates over this. Just got off the phone with Tamco they said no filler on bare metal creates heat then condensation on metal and to put over there DTM high build 5310. I do not need epoxy if car is inside all the time it will save you a lot of money just block and top coat your done and still have epoxy properties in the DTM.

    See this is why I don’t understand people when they complain about paint transfers that happen in the sun but you can repair by putting a little bit of water on your towel and wiping it off. Instead people go and pay $500 for somebody to do that exact same thing put a little water on a towel and wipe it off.
    It’s the same thing with painting the car why spend $5000 to send the car back to Toyota to have repainted when you could just do it yourself for a fifth the price. I guess it’s for the same reason you don’t take apart the Xbox because Toyota won’t refund the warranty on the car if break the seal.

    New sub. I'm doing a Civic too you don't want to know how much damage it had. Question: The primer you painted over in this vid seemed real shiny what grit was it sanded to (wet or dry?) before your high build? Looks like you're doing a great job I'll have to jump ahead and see the final!

    • @GarageSpeCivic
      @GarageSpeCivic  5 лет назад +1

      I epoxy primered the car first and within 24 hours layed high build ontop of that, within a 48 hour window you can still achieve a chemical bond after epoxy primer, therefore sprayed on high build next, dry sanded that, then base then clearcoat, wet sanding clear coat

    how much did the high build "hide"? i am about to 2k prime my project car but there are some very small inperfections that i dont want to show threw the paint.. i can barely feel them when rubbing my hand along the car... think the 2k prime stands a chance of evening things out??

    • @GarageSpeCivic
      @GarageSpeCivic  5 лет назад +1

      Depends on how many layers of high build you throw on I'd say, and the quality of that high build. It would probably be better and cheaper to use a similar glazing puddy like I did to remove those types of imperfections. Relying on the high build may disappoint you in the end when you throw color on. For me the high build does a good job filling in some scratches, but for dents, valleys or anything deeper then a good scratch I think will show through. Little glaze, little sanding, then primer ontop you'll be happy you did it

    wondering .. whats the stats you need on a compressor to do a paint job ?

    • @cubul32
      @cubul32 4 года назад +1

      He has 5 cfm at 90 psi. I have 6 cfm at 9 psi (I paid 300 canadian off kjiji - our craigs). Keep in mind you better have a very good dessicant system (expect to spend 2-3 hundreds if you wanna get stellar results - ask me if you're not sure). What matters is the gun. He is using a Husky small gun requiring 4 cfm (it's about pairing the gun with the compressor for the most part, but if you're working so slow that your paint goes past the flash point, not sure how the edges will blend - but I doubt most guns are that slow).
      Now I have used the QualSpray Am 5008 for houserepairs (1.8 and 2.5 tip) - which means that it can be used for the car too since the car paints are much thinner. QualSpray is rebranded low tier Asturos (literally, they even have the same code, AM 5008 and AM 6008 and so on) - and the seller Jeff Jewitt is a pro finisher, wrote books on finishing and whatnot. Wood finishers around the world are using these guns and I found on forums DYI dudes and pros having used these guns for about anything - especially if it's a pressure cup gun. So far happy with the purchase - look at the lineup and research reviews: homesteadfinishingproducts.com/products-we-offer/hvlp-spray-equipment/qualspray-hvlp-guns/ .
      For primer I would go with a cheaper gun like SprayIt - and I heard that SprayIt works well for coat/primer too. SprayIt has a smaller series of guns - one is swivel ( SP-352) - and they use lower cfm like this Husky. The small gun can be found with 1.5 and 1.7 kits: www.californiaairtools.com/spray-guns/ . I'm planning to get a 352 for primers and odd stuff like undercoats.

    Does the 2k primer protect against corrosion?

    • @GarageSpeCivic
      @GarageSpeCivic  5 лет назад +2

      A lot of primers out there protect against corrosion, DTM (direct to metal) primers is what you need first to provide a great barrier/seal against moisture/corrosion. That is if your working with new metal, sealing welded repairs, repairing rust. Say the body of a car was just faded with no rust, some small filler repairs and we wanted to paint over it. Skipping the epoxy or etch DTM primer would be fine. Spot priming over the filler with a primer sealer would add insurance to protection and then going in there with a high build after would be nice. I myself did the epoxy primer first and then the high build primer after. I'm no professional with this but what i learned from my local body paint supply store taught me a lot. I suggest visiting a local store for yourself and speaking with the representatives about your project and they will give you a good rundown on what you can use.

    • @GarageSpeCivic
      @GarageSpeCivic  5 лет назад +1

      I have used the 2k in a can, got some color sample cans from a body shop, originally for when I was deciding my color. Was surprised with how well it sprayed. Getting a good 2k aerosol can makes the world of difference, but all I can recommend is just following the can instructions. With a bike frame id dust the first coat, 40-50% coverage, hit it again with another light coat. And for the 3rd look for that full coverage. Creating a nice tacky base should help with avoiding runs. I've used that method for my headlights or parts with lots of curves for example and have shed some really nice results.
