Mary didn’t just win the singles title but her and Martina Hingis also won the doubles title this year. Mary was great to watch especially when playing great tennis
Mary Pierce, my all time fave. Her story, face of a princess, body of a goddess, the strenght, great attitude and lovely manners. Mary should never be forgotten! Wishing you all the best in the world, Mary!
Incredible quality on this video! I'm watching all of these old school highlights to get me through the lack of sports during COVID-19 - it's introducing me to some great tennis of the past :D
I was happy for Pierce at the time (and still am!)...but, man, Hingis was beautiful to watch. I don't think I truly appreciated her genius at the time.
@AM I agree, her only weapon was her mind, she didnt have the serve, her groundstrokes were stuck in the 1980s, but her technique was impeccable, she just lacked power to convert rallies into points. She had to push that extra effort to take control of rallies or force her opponent to commit an error just to score a point. This eventually took a toll on her physical constitution and was plagued by injuries.
Jeb Clem right?! I hated her around that time. She also had said not nice things about steffi graf. Thats a big no no. Then came french open 99 final against steffi. I was so over her by then .... but she was actually great to watch.
@AM That is certainly true in this match. Pierce had penetrating weapons on each wing, Hingis had touch and consistency and athleticism (speed, dexterity) AND tactics but those loopy ground strokes weren't going to get past Pierce. Pierce also read Hingis really well and at times knew where she was going to go. Have to be smart to do that, especially with Hingis.
@@masjom2556 2 (4 if you count her doubles and mixed). Also, Mauresmo went in with 2. Finally, her impact on the game was HOF worthy. She was one of the first true power players on the women's circuit, along with Seles and Capriati, slightly before Davenport.
She has TWO slam wins and FOUR runners up in singles and TWO doubles slams. And TWO runners up at end of year champs. That is indisputably a hall of fame career.
Mary had a great tournament. She had a tough draw beating Seles, Hingis and then Conchita ( clay court specialist). Mary was playing well, moving well and extremely focused the entire tournament.
@@wheresbaby7783 I’m a genius and you’re an idiot! Fool I’m talking about Mary Pierce winning the 2000 French Open champion. She beat Conchita in the final. This has nothing to do with Wimbledon. SMH
@@wheresbaby7783 Despite her only major trophy being Wimbledon, she was considered a clay court specialist, like many Spaniards of that era. You're clearly not a genius.
Martina Hingis the ONLY woman tennis player I fell in love with. Ohh my oh my I miss her tennis in the 90’s and she was beautiful as well as beautiful to watch 🥰🥰🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
I paused the end of match greet. Where they shake hands and kiss each others cheeks . Real respect for each other’s tennis. Beautiful match. I remember Marina Hingis. She was incredible. Just not on this day MP played her very Best tennis to beat Hingis. Thanks for posting this match....
reynald bonilla Obviously you're hard of hearing or just choosing to believe a lie. It was not quiet during this era. Monica Seles was playing then and Mary was actually grunting and making noises as well. Its not like it was so quiet you could hear a rat piss on cotton...but I will concede its not the shrieking of WTA of today. But it wasn't quiet like church mice.
This was right at the end of Hingis' period of dominance. Emerging after the Graf-Seles duopoly and before the Williams sisters really put the hammer down. Graceful on court and had all the shots she just couldn't compete with the power hitting that emerged in the early noughties. Her comeback was pretty non descript because by then all the top 10 were hammering the ball and she was blown off the court...
That match was so mental tough for Mary. Not just because of the crowd and the high expectations, but also she had lost the previous seven matches with Hingis in straight sets.
I love me some Mary Pierce. There were only a handful of women with power on both wings at that time. Mary, Mirjana, Monica and Lindsay. I remember when Mary thrashed Steffi at the French like 6-2, 6-2. She was fireing on all cylinders.
ATTRACTIVE AND POWERFUL GAME WITH SUPER STAMINA FULL PLAYERS.......... BOTH PLAYERS IS ENERGY FULL, STRONG FULL, STAMINA FULL, PRACTICE FULL, TECHNICAL FULL, AND POWERFUL............. BEAUTIFUL SHOT, ATTRACTIVE RETURN SEEN THIS GAME....... ON THE HOL WINER IS WINER.........
I wonder how long it took the rest of the players on the tour to realize that Hingis hit more inside out forehand winners than crosscourt? As intelligent of a player as Hingis was, she had her set pattern and actually struggled to break that pattern confidently.
I would of been going for all her opponents from the fourth round. Not that I have problem with Mary she just was a long way down my list . But impressive to watch her in this RG was she this good every year.here. .
Mary playing such a mature match, not only mentally, but also with her tactics. It seems she used short angles to mix it up and draw Hingis out of position
The 2000 and on is the start of hingis declining in tennis. Not only injuries but also some tough matches and losses from the emerging all around power players of 2000 like the William sisters, the belgians, masha, kutsnetsova, ivanovic, capriati, davenport, pierce, jankovic, mauresmo, stosur, kvitova, lina, dementieva, maguruza, lisicki, halep, kerber. She was reduced to just playing doubles.
Good match by Pierce especially in the third set she raised her level, Not a good match by Hingis at all though, many errors and balls often short, not nearly as good as she was one year before

She was capable of so much more (Mary Pierce). Glad she is finally in the Hall of Fame. Well-deserved.
Why she going in to hall of fame? Just got 1 title Gs

Great match and I remember Mary started cramping near the end. And Martina was making her run for those points.
Mary is a stunner! So gorge!

Andre Dummasch I agree, Hingis far from her best though, it must be said. Unbelievable that she never won this title
Hingis was fine, Pierce was playing great.
Two very classy, talented tennis players.
Great opening shot!
When Mary pounded those forehands like she was holding a club was so satisfying.
I love both of them.. Beautiful
I remember the slight kerfuffle with Pierce and her being Canadian, but playing for France, and living in the States. She was great to watch, though.
Mary has a french mother and an american father, she has both nationality and never was canadian.
Mary Pierce was born in Canada to an American father and French mother. She holds 3 citizenship: Canada, USA and France.
Nobody could stop her in tight draw!!!😃
Mary était très belle en l'an 2000 surtout durant ce tournoi de RG. Elle portait la plus belle robe qu'une joueuse ait portée.

She had lost to Steffi in the final of the previous year with an eerily similar score... 4:6/7:5/6:2... a grand slam that escaped her
Very good match. Always like Mary’s tennis but this year wanted conchita to win. Remember the day this was played watching on tv. Always love RG.

Dident expect that
Mary Pierce was powerful.
Good match by Pierce especially in the third set she raised her level, Not a good match by Hingis at all though, many errors and balls often short, not nearly as good as she was one year before
Martina Hingis perdio en 99 vs Graf y 2000 vs Pierce, con mismo resultado
Was Mary well accepted by the French people even though she was french canadian?
She has french and american nationalities, her mother is french.
@Jeb Clem Don't exaggerate. She speaks with an accent but it's not really strong.

French Crowd here being disrespectful again. Barely getting behind Hingis here and do much cheering for Pierce.
Well what do you expect? Mary is from France, it's her home crowd.
The game is unfair because the French cheer for their own players.
