Thanks team FFT, great to relive the golden moments of Mary's triumph. Request you to please also upload her quarter final match against Monica Seles. Mary probably played her best tennis of the tournament in that match.

What a great champion she was, especially her memorable win at Wimbledon in the 90s. Was shock to hear of her passing at such a young age of just 49 a few years ago due to cancer. She was gracious, kind and had a big heart, but on the court she will always be known for her brilliant skills and fighting abilities.
She is gone but will never be forgotten.

She was such a classy player to watch, perhaps could have won 5 or 6 slams instead of 2. Her game was on a knife-edge a lot of the time though; you never quite knew when it was going to break down at random moments. A bit more consistency and she would have had more slams.

    • @grantgoffin4774
      @grantgoffin4774 Месяц назад

She could have won more than 2 but 5 or especialy 6 would be hard as she had only 2 slams she could win at- Australia and French. She was never going to win a US Open and DEFINITELY never a Wimbledon as she was much better on slower surfaces than fast. So it depends how many slams you think she can manage out of just 2 slam events, especialy in a super tough clay era of Graf, Henin, Seles, Sabatini, Sanchez, Martinez, Hingis, Williams sisters, Majoli, Clijsters, Fernandez, Novotna, who were literally all great on clay, and then even Date, Huber, Zvereva, Davenport, Coetzer as challengers on the surface after that. And Australia was by far Hingis and Seles's most dominant slam both, and while it was Graf's worst slam she still won 4 times at it.

@@grantgoffin4774well, she did reach the final of the US Open in 2005. Possibly her best chance to win there was 1997. She won the first set of her fourth round match against Seles 6-1 but couldn't keep her form. If she'd won that, she would have played Spirlea in the quarter finals (Mary had a winning head to head against Spirlea and won all of their matches on hard courts), Venus Williams in the semi finals (Venus still very young, and Mary won their first encounter a year later, on hard courts), and then Hingis in the final. It would have been a tough match, but Mary was capable of beating Hingis on hard courts, including a 6-0, 6-0 win in 1995. Mary so streaky though. Rare in her career that she strung together a few good wins in a row.

@@zeddeka Mary was NEVER beating Hingis in the final. She lost to her 6-2, 6-0 on a similar hard court earlier that summer, and 6-2, 6-2 in the Australian Open final. The YEC narrow win means nothing. Hingis was much worse at that time and coming off a string of like 4 losses in her last 5 tournaments. Plus it was carpet, a different surface altogether. Hingis is a horrible match up for Pierce, as their 3 matches at the Australian Open which is a favorite surface of both prove. All 3 were blowouts even though Pierce was in good form at all 3 tournaments. Also she only posted 3 wins total (in a ton of matches, something like 17) after early 96, the aforementioned YEC match, RG 2000 which was on clay, and one other I don't remember somewhere except that there was a 3rd to go with her 3 early 96/earlier wins.
As it was she played very well vs Seles and still lost handily in the last 2 sets. And beating on fire Spirlea while possible would have been no gimme at all, and remember Spirlea was 0-4 vs Seles and beat her so her record vs Pierce which is better than that does not mean much. I agree she probably beats Venus in the semis, but beating all of Seles, on fire Spirlea, and her horrible match up Hinigis who smoked her all year on hard courts, wasn't happening.
I don't know if there is a year Pierce had a real shot to win the US Open but her best chance was either 94 or 2004. 94 where she fell to a very in form Novotna who she would have had to play her very best to beat. Then if she did she would have played Graf who she did well against this year, then a winnable final on a hard court vs Sanchez if she won that. Still all 3 of those would have been tough wins so all 3 in the row very hard, but more likely than 3 or 4 again in 97 and beating Hingis which would be nearly impossible for her at that point. Or 2005 for the simple reason she was already in the final to begin with, even if beating Clijsters on that court would be super hard.

@@zeddeka and to look at it another way Mary was the round of 16 loser to the quarter final loser to the semi final loser to the lopsided final loser. Yeah Mary was not winning US Open 97, LOL! I would say she was even more likely to win 98 or 99 (still very unlikely) than 97.

Conchita was too passive. U can't play a defensive game n wait for your opponent to make errors. If she wans her opponent to make errors, she herself has to cut down her unforced errors. She has got to be aggressive n make the points.
    Congrats Mary 🎉🎉🎉

@@rainyd4293 yes. Even Graf couldn’t beat her when she was on. Pierce beat Hingis, who was number 1, to get to this final. However, I wish that Conchita could have enjoyed that final. It looked as if she did not. I think that Conchita (and Natasha Zvereva and Gigi Fernandez) were really nice girls. They were buddies and I always wished the best for them.
