Her level of play vs Graf at the French in 1994 (and in all previous matches until she choked the finals) is on par with today’s best levels. Unreal for that time. I had never seen Graf being overpowered like this. Not even Seles did. Graf had horrible losses before and after (vs ASV and Coetzer) but they were due to her inability to keep the ball within the court while being outmaneuvered, not to being overpowered.
@@dariomondini1655 you’re right. Graf did change that in 1995 with playing many more down the line backhands. It was very obvious in her last match vs Pierce at the paris open. She won that one fairly easily after 2 losses in 3 matches in 1994.
Mary Pierce was so wonderful to watch. She was both elegant and powerful. All of her movements on the court was so clean and finished. She really had a lot of style.
This was such a huge win for Mary. She had just lost the French final to Arantxa after that incredible run. Arantxa was a very tough player to face in a final. Arantxa's 4 GS titles came against Graf (2), Seles (1), and Mary (1). Coincidentally her 8 losses came at the hands of those same 3 players. If Mary was connecting with her shots, then you were going to lose; that's all there was to it.
You’re so right. On her A game she could beat anyone. Can’t think of another player who beat ASV 6-1 6-0 Hingis 6-0 6-0, Graf 6-2 6-2, serena 6-2 6-1, Davenport 6-3 6-0, Seles 6-1 6-1 and also had convincing wins vs Hénin, clijsters, venus.
@@juju1305 Pierce was Seles' pigeon pre-stabbing and administered some thorough beatdowns to her. Pierce took 2 game from her in a semi on carpet and 2 and 2 on Paris hardcourts in 93
Pierce was such a great player. She was so interesting to watch. She played imaginative, and at times witty, tennis with angles and tonnes of natural power! One of the game's great talents. As many have said: Mary could beat anyone on her day - even Serena said that. When her game, body and mind were in harmony she could be unplayable: she's destroyed, at one time or another, all of the great tennis players she's faced in her career.
JR 1986 Happy to disagree :) I just feel she actually did well to grab what she did at the majors as play at the top is half a mental game in playing your best when it matters most. That’s not to say I don’t think she was a good player, I just feel more big wins would have made her a great. Sabatini had the same issue; insanely talented but just couldn’t get to grips with the mental part of her game and only managed to win the US Open ‘90. Also didn’t help that Sabatini grew up in tennis the same time as Graf.
I wouldn't say she destroyed Monica, they're matches were pretty competitive. If anything Seles handed her two pretty bad losses one almost being a double bagel.
Mary Pierce was so hot with that tennis dress. She played awesome once she got rid of the nerves. Mary Pierce deserves to be inducted into the a International Tennis Hall of Fame this year.
Mary was my great idol, she could have won 5 big slam if she had not been wounded so often. I once met Mary who signed a card with a very nice word. Her faith in God is unwavering and she is an exceptional woman. May God bless her
YAGOUB-ROUBA Nourredine Steffi Graf was my idol but Mary Pierce was a close second. She was amazing and wonderful to watch. To this day I still watch my recorded matches of her on video. She should be inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame this year, she deserves it. Did you vote for her?
YAGOUB-ROUBA Nourredine i loved her too. I think nerves cost her the 1994 French finals (and 2005 too, had she played her game she’d have sent Hénin packing like she did a few months later at the USO)
A great tactical match from Pierce - you can see that's she's regularly moonballing to Arantxa's forehand. Arantxa had something of a technical fault with her forehand that meant she often couldn't do much with a high bouncing ball to her forehand. Towards the end of the match it really does break down
I’ve always enjoyed watching Mary play. She had such power but also femininity, which created a nice style I think. So happy she made into the Hall of Fame, as she deserves it!
Between her strange father and injuries it's so sad that Mary Pierce didn't have a long uninterrupted period of time where she could just play tennis at the peak of her powers. The women around at that time knew that all things being equal if she was on forget about it Mary Pierce was going to win. I have so much admiration for the strength of character she had having to overcome the actions of her brutal father. Mary Pierce should have won at least 5 to 10 grand slams. What a talent. I remember her beating Steffi Graf and at the time you had the feeling that Graf had no chance. A tip of the hat to Mary Pierce, not only for what she did but for what might have been.
Vicario is very quick that's her defense, chasing the balls away from her, but her attacks were not consistent waiting for Pierce to make an errors but Pierce was just perfect of making just a few errors..
Besides Venus and Serena nobody smacked that ball harder then Pierce. She had a solid serve too and became a complete player as her net game improved a lot. If not for injuries I think Pierce would have won 5 or 6 slams but 2 GS wins and 6 finals is a damn good career. I loved watching her fuss with her pony tail and sneaker taps on clay etc….. She was a princess at times but from what I have learned about Pierce she is a good person with a strong spiritual center and an all around good person. She was always fun to watch!!
Garbine Muguruza reminds me so much of Mary Peirce. Both talented players with 2 GS titles only to be plagued by injuries. Ever since that knee injury Peirce had, thats a such a hard one to swallow.
POWERFUL AND SUPER RANKING PLAYER IN THIS GAME........... BOTH PLAYERS IS ENERGY FULL, STAMINA FULL, STRONG FULL, TECHNICAL FULL, PRACTICE FULL AND POWERFUL....... .......... POWERFUL AND STRONG FULL GAME............. BUT WINER IS WONDERFUL...........
Marie Pierce was the best tennis player from France .. she had an extremely strong forehand and she was one of few tennis players who take risks and hit very hard .. but she wasn't lucky at all like all other players .. she used to threaten all the top players and defeat them and played many finals but lost them
Pierce should have won so much more, I don' understand how she ended up with only 2 meager slams and a bunch of tournaments. She should have dominated after Monica's stabbing
I agree. My take is that her game was too one-dimensional: POWER tennis. When she was on, she was unstoppable. But when she was off, she couldn't really rely on other means. I would have loved to see her more at the net and for her to set up points more patiently instead of trying to obliterate every ball.
Tress Braga I think.you're right. Incredible firepower and technique from Pierce but she was never a truly great mover, and wasn't the best at grinding out a result when she wasn't at her absolute mover.
She was far too inconsistent and did not have the movement or fitness to reliably challenge Graf. She was never going to dominate and she was certainly not going to consistently beat Steffi.
Mary was so great. That forehand was savage!!!! Too bad she only played well & put everything all together in one tournament every 5 years... how did mary do against seles?

Que manera de luchar de Arantxa, llegando a bolas que otras darían por perdidas. A coraje no le ganaba nadie pese a su baja estatura, lo que le hacía desesperar a sus rivales y realizar hazañas impensables.
I'm sorry, but those who say arantxa is ugly, look at mary's face!! looks like a praying mantis... but yes, pierce's shots were more effective and tchnical, but nobody gives the top for free, so arantxa deserves at least a bit of respect.

I kind of agree with you here - She wasn't too bad with speed, but her footwork was so cramped and she was way too close in the ball range that she had to twist her body into these weird positions to get her shot. If it wasn't for her power on the baseline and her ability to drive her opponents into the corners, then she maybe wouldn't have won. She had way more tenacity back then, but her game really improved after this win - right up to the 2000 win at Roland Garros.

I guess the answer is that her "B" game could be pretty awful at times. It was all or nothing with her.
ASV 2 finals in a row and both times got completely destroyed.
Not really relevant. She won two between those (FO and USO 1994, both against the players she lost to at the AO 94 and 95).
