I modelled my own backhand after hers, and I was always known for my fierce (or Pierce haha) backhand. This was the best match she ever played. She started and ended the match with backhand winner.
Oh she was so good when she was on To beat Graf 6262 at French Martinez 6361 in semis here ASV 6362 in this final Top 3 in world at that point , shows she could wipe anyone off the court when she was playing her best
This was the start of a really bad series for Arantxa, losing 5 slam finals in 1995 and 1996 and the 1996 Olympics final. What a great match from Pierce though.
If only Mary had had a better serve, and a drop shot… nobody could live with her from the baseline, maybe Lindsay was in that league, but nobody had a better ground game in her generation
All credit to Arantxa for what she's won but I never could understand how she did. I mean she didn't have any exceptional attributes apart from maybe her footwork. Playing her was like playing a wall I guess.
She was excellent on clay, but was just a good player outside clay. I would never understand how she made it to so many slam finals outside the French Open, and even won the 1994 us open.
