    Note: it's not that Kingdom Hearts III couldn't get Danny DeVito back for the role (though he never appeared in Kingdom Hearts, all the voice roles for Phil in other media were done by Robert Costanzo with the sole exception of the PS1 game and one of those interactive storybook games Disney used to make), it's that Ichiro Nagai, Phil's Japanese voice actor, died in 2014, and characters in Japan are often "retired" if their voice actor passes. Same thing happened to Colonel Campbell, "retired" after the death of Takeshi Aono, which is why all of Snake's codec conversations in Smash Ultimate are recycled from Brawl.

    • @kyuven
      @kyuven 2 года назад +20

      that's not necessarily true. it mostly depends on whether or not an actor passes the torch before dying. for example, Lupin III

    Funfact: The Japanese release of Epic Mickey was published by Nintendo and included many bug fixes for the camera and allows you to skip projector levels after beating them once! If you make a backup of the Japanese disc you can edit it easily to play in full English too.

    • @stevethepocket
      @stevethepocket 2 года назад +13

      See, people whine about developers using patches as an excuse to not make sure their games work on release, but then you get stuff like this where the game launches with bugs anyway and they'd have been perfectly willing to fix it if they could, _but they can't._

  • @16BitKamek
    @16BitKamek 2 года назад +290

    I heard Phil doesn't speak in Kingdom Hearts 3 because his Japanese voice actor died, and they didn't want to recast out of respect. I get it, but that's why Phil is silent in the actual game. I personally would have cut Phil out if it mean having less awkward scenes, but I totally get why you'd leave him in too.

    • @MiloKuroshiro
      @MiloKuroshiro 2 года назад +34

      Exactly. DeVito never even dubbed Phil in any KH game. It was always a sound-alike.

    • @mealwheels3562

      Yes, plus the Japanese are very respectful to the actors that voice the characters.
      Chikao Otsuka the Japanese voice actor who played Xehanort died in 2015, for such a plot important character, they had to replace him. Akio Ōtsuka his son, who is also a voice actor, ended up replacing him, which was seen as a respectful choice.
      Voice actors in Japanese normally stay casted as that characters voice. Which is why the Japanese voice of goku has always been voiced by the same woman.

    they didn't give Phil any Voice lines in KH3 because his Japanese voice actor passed away recently and they didnt want to step all over his legacy.

    As "Podcast the Ride" would say, Donald Duck in "World of Illusion" can't crawl through gaps because of his thick seat

    Ah dang you didn't cover Nightmare Ned for the PC.
    That game was SOOO trippy and dripping with atmosphere.
    A real hidden gem.

    Oh man. Seeing Castle of Illusion just unlocked memories from when I was... maybe 4-5 years old? Absolutely forgot I had even played it. It was the toy-land level that did it.
    It's amazing how the most inconsequential things can just unearth a memory you haven't recalled in fricken years.

    Oh hey, i was in a Disney parade when I was in marching band, too. I think at Disney World (that’s the one in Florida, right?). I don’t remember a video we had to watch for “expectations” but it honestly could have been something I barely paid attention to and just forgot about, especially since this was like 15 years ago.

    In high school, we all would play Tron 2.0's lightcycle game constantly instead of doing work.

    World of Illusion is what fired up my nostalgia neurons here, my friend owned it and we spent SO many hours teaming up or solo-running it... so yeah, I know all about it's various games in game. Felt SO massive back then... also played but never finished Cold Shadow, which made me mad because it's Donald as a NINJA how could I not love it? But alas- the friend who owned that game didn't like it, the controls WERE kinda slippery tho, so we seldom played it together.

    Disney made some great original games too. Split Second and Pure from the 360/ps3 generation were both made by Disney and are both great!

    Phil not talking in KHIII is because the Japanese voice actor died and out of respect they didn't want to replace him, so he don't talk in other languages either

    When you started the video by skipping over Mystical Quest I was a little sad because that one is probably the one when I think of "Disney License game" but then you absolutely made up for it by including Magical Racing Tour, a game I played the PC version of and nobody seems to remember. People always assume I'm making stuff up, especially when I tell them that aside from Chip & Dale there were no recognizable Disney characters in it and the tracks were based on Themepark Rides, which, y'know, fair.
    Also how did I not know that Eurocom made both 007 Nightfire (basically the Bond Multiplayer game of my childhood) and also Maui Mallard and Hercules? Dang, what a wide range of talent.
