im gonna be honest, not cutting out the wet wood and using BONDO to just cover it up is craaaaaaazy. I've done my fair share of fiberglass work, rebuilt my 1979 Sea Ox took it all the way down to just a hull and started new. Helped a friend on his 87 privateer and did my 2820 parkers fuel tanks so id say i have some knowledge with the work.
In the future, 3M makes an eraser wheel for the drill or die grinder depending on your preference of tool. Basically its a big rubber disk that us body or detail guys use to remove decals/ adhesive. RPM's are key with the wheel. Another thing which works great to attack the glue is any petroleum based product like wd-40, PB Blaster, etc. Goo Gone, lacquer thinner also works. Lets also not forget about the heat gun/ plastic razor blade method for pulling the stickers of neatly. Its best to try for the least abrasive method and work your way up. That way you don't need to do any extra work filling in the low spots with high build primer, epoxy, etc. When you aren't doing a respray and have to be careful of the finish, that grinder isn't even an option. This is why I suggested the other ways for next time when you get another project with good paint that you plan on saving, but with decals or scuff marks you need to clean off. Figured I'd offer some tips after MANY years of bodyshop experience. Nice looking boat for sure. Thanks for sharing. 👍🙂
Wife and I tore out the interior of our 1987 Formula 242 LS (first boat!). I was expecting more advanced building techniques but it is all just screwed and glued! Love watching the work being done as it inspires us to do more ourselves. Thanks.
Just wanted to give you a heads up, you can get 3m rubber discs that remove the decals really quick without taking any gelcoat off. 3m also makes a pretty adhesive remover chemical that works pretty good too.
Hard to belief that boat was over a $100K when new and they are still using wood instead of composites. The 1980s to 1990s Sea Rays had some gorgeous lines.
Sea-Rays have thick Gel-Coat. Rather than wrapping or painting you can buff it right out using an aggressive cutting paste. Watching you cut into the gel coat with an angle grinder hurts my feelings ;-)
One more thing.. Bondo is for cars Not boats. Use thickened epoxy or polyester resin on boats. There are many reasons for that. The upside is that it is a lot cheaper, more durable, can be thickened or thinned based on the application, you can control the curing time, and when you glass over it you will have a chemical bond. None of this is true for bondo.

It’s a Boat!…..strip the thing, turn into new……just a vehicle, otherwise, ya have qualms about buying it, under Superstition,…..Don’t Buy It!!….(weirdo)……it’s just odd. (I named my F-150….”pain in my ass”)……don’t change the name of ya buy it!! ….stupid.

Bondo and boats don't mix. Epoxy is your go to for anything boat related. Nice job btw.

We tried but the decals we so old the 3m discs weren’t working. Maybe we should’ve tried the chemical route. Oh well it worked anyway.

boats over 800k still use wood over coosa. not many manufacturers have swapped to coosa yet

We tried I promise. Couldn’t get anything to come through. There wasn’t any Gelcoat left

You could have used gel coat cleaner and saved lots of time and money.

We used fiberglass epoxy resin. Is that not OK to use?

Dexter motor home axles happened. We parted ways with it and bought a nice gooseneck aluminum trailer. Too many wheel hub blow outs.
