Can I ask what leather you all used for this bag. I've had my eye on this bag for about a year now for my own build for myself but I'm always to busy making someone else's stuff. I was thinking of using a good harness leather like Wickett and Craig or just a great veg tan like w&c or Herman Oak in 5oz and dye it myself. The finished bag looks great!
I was a beginner when I started this bag and whooooo boy did I make a lot of costly mistakes. Cutting too deeply into the seam allowance; punching the stitching holes at odd angles; problems with the consistency of dyeing: I messed up so many times. I ended up remaking every single piece aside from the panels, many of them more than once. I did it until I was satisfied and, by the end, I had chewed through $200 of already-cheap leather. Must have used like 40 sqft in total. There were many many days of nothing but failure and a desire to give up but I did it. I got through it and I have made something very nice. All I had made prior to this was a few medieval coin purses for my siblings to put their DND dice into. I listened to audiobooks while I worked, and I chewed through all of LoTR, ASoIAF, Anathem, Intuition Pumps twice, and most of Harry Potter. ASoIAF is like 100 hours long all on its own. God only know how many hours I poured into this bag. I kept it all a secret from my family/friends while I worked on the bag. None of them knew I was even still doing leather stuff. I don't know how long it took me to finish it, but it was at least 4 months. By the time I finished, I thought the bag still sucked. All I could see were the errors and ugly bits. I was missing the forest for the trees, I suppose, because as soon as I posted it on FB, and on a few leathercraft forums/groups/subs, I received so very much praise! It was insane. My mistake-riddled bag has the most likes and comments of anything in the main FB leathercraft page over the last 7 months. So many people asked how I did this or that, and though I still feel that I am a novice, it was very nice to be treated like somebody with real skill. When wearing it at work after clocking out for the day, guests at my hotel sometimes ogle it and ask if I would make them one. I am far too inefficient to sell a new bag for a reasonable amount of money, and I say so when asked. One man offered me $800 for it as it is, mistakes and all. I didn't sell it. It means so much to me.
Just got the pattern and restocked my leather supply. This is probably the 10th pattern I've gotten from you guys and I'm so excited to start it. Good hiking backpacks are way too expensive.
Looks like a dyed vegtan? Love the caramel color. I bought the pattern, wondering if you do have a SVG/lasercut option, my hands aren't as great as they used to be and the laser helps cut clean lines
Hey there just bought the pattern, just curious which one goes along with the video as there’s are several different downloads haha. Also I was curious about the zippers, are they a certain size or how do I make the zippers? Great video thank you!
Wondering what the distance is between the lower shoulder strap attachment points is. I’m a big guy and typically need at least 14” open space so the leather does not rub on my sides. That’s about 35.5 cm.
At five minutes and 45 seconds into the video, what part of the bag are you making? I’m trying to follow along but yours has curved edges on the bottom and mine has straight. It just doesn’t look like anything I have in my pattern. What number on the pattern does that correspond to?
@creativeawl The print off of your pattern says it only requires four buckles but in reality it requires six. Four buckles in the front and two for the shoulder straps
I just bought the pattern today! I'm super excited to make this bag. Would you recommend gluing down the straps and then stitching them for reinforcement? Or would just the stitching be strong enough for daily use? Thanks!
In a few of the prices of leather you have, there are holes for rivets that the pattern doesn't have, if you have any clarification that would be great, thank you
@@staticchronos2780 Yeah, at first I did a hole there, thought the straps will be longer and will need rivets but I shorten the straps, and rivets weren't needed. The patterns don't have that hole and the only riveting thing is just the strap without the front.
Hello, thanks! its oil tanned leather. Why i dont use a glue? Becouse its not needed. It wasnt in use until machine stiching discovery. Then all leather would be need placed together and flat so there was needing to use the glue to stitch it properly. With pattern, visaulisation - all holes have their places and all will fit together correctly.
Awesome bag, beautiful work! Thank you for sharing. However, it seems there is a problem with your website, I cannot access it while connected with a VPN (I tried many servers from different countries). Do you know about that issue? You may lose a bunch of customers. I get a blank page on Firefox, HTTP error 429 on Chrome. It works if I deactivate the VPN connection. Cheers!
It takes a good long while. I'm a noob and have made many time-consuming mistakes, though. I ended up spending 40+ hours on it by this point, but I feel like I could do it 10 if I began again.
Can you confirm the main body dimensions? The conversion from centimeters to inches on the height does not match. Love the bag, thanks a bunch in advance.

trying to make this with pricking irons, whats the spacing of the holes?
its 5mm

Yes, youre right, there is a mistake
I’m using a 5oz kodiak light tan for this build. Feels and looks great so far
Very nice.
My zipper pattern is different than this video, Now I am not sure if I should start over now that I have ruined 2 zippers so far.

Hi, just bought the pattern from your website. What are the measurements of the bigger version? Thanks
Hello, the bigger version is just 8cm higher.
Потрясающие работы
Do you have a link for the leather you used? Also the thread size? And did you burnish the edges? Thanks so much! Keep up the awesome work!
I like the design, but not the color. Is it possible quality painting with a different color if I do DIY?
Of course,- you can dye vegetable tanned leather with any colours you want. THis one leather has been dyed in tannery.
@@CreativeAwl thank you.👍
do you think a 17" laptop would fit in there or would the pattern need a few adjustments to work it out?
I've got to look into having someone print my pattern. Even after all of these decades, i still dont have a printer.
Hello, what is the name of this type of skin please?Amazing work, thanks for sharing.
How much the cost of backpack
Hello there! Great work! But can i ask how long rivets did you use? Thanks!
About 5mm feet with 2.5mm thick leather
Thanks! Another question. Is there a way i can make the backpack straps more comfortable?
Is this the normal baclbag or the big backbag pattern in this tutorial.?
Its a normal, bigger is just higher
Please tell me what thickness of leather do you use?
About 2mm+

Wow I love that. Is it crazy horse leather? I love the color too. Why didn’t you use any glues? Just curious.

In South Africa, I can only get leather sold in thickness(mm) and not in oz. Is there any rule of thumb to apply?
5oz is 2mm and any more or less 1 oz is 0.4mm .
