it depends. If you have a 3-2-3.6mm firm contrast leather, you can use it as it is. If you don't have it, you can line to obtain the same consistency. I line a lot because in this way I can control better the consistency.
That was a very satisfying video to watch...I've done a few small leather items, wallets, belts, etc. but, never anything as nice as this...it is inspiring and has me thinking that I'd like to make one. Thank you!

Beautiful work. Im in the process of designing a simple day pack, and having trouble deciding how i wanna attatch the shoulder straps at the bottom. I know im gonna use slide buckles, but decide the rest
I was looking and looking, I knew I saved your video, but had to skim through a bunch. I was trying to find that guy that punched all his holes with a hole punch, instead of using a pricking fork. And now I found it. I am giving up on the those forks, cause the holes are so small, and I end up using needle nose pliers to pull the needle and thread through the holes. And if I am stacking patterns, and punching through 3 layers, the holes always end up jagged and not matched. I think your method is the best, as the holes are well defined and clean, and using patterns insures the stitching will look excellent. Just my two cents, I'm an amateur working my way up to becoming more professional. Thanks for the video.
Buy, wuta 1.5 mm hollow punch, use a 1mm polyester thread to stitch, If you are US there are some at 0.92 mm from Maine thread company, its expensive but awesome thread. While punching holes always use a compass or some tool to mark a line from the edge and while placing the tip of the punch look to keep it in the middle of the line. Use leather with some kind of rigidity to it and it will be a good start.

no, it is not suede. I use suede only for lining but not for this backpack. This is a pullup that is often used to make insulated boots. I can't make waterproof suede but sometimes I buy that type of suede which is made like this in tannery. It is used for protection equipement
So is the single hole puncher better than lets say hole puncher with many heads im tryingn to get into it but is it necessary to use the single one first?
i m used to make holes with a single punch. Punching the holes for a project means a small procent of the work so if i'll use a tool with 5 punches, i;ll gain only a few minutes. And when i started leathercraft, i didn't find any other type of punches.
Sinabroks make an excellent pricking iron, lots of different sizes and option, I believe you can get them up to 12 punches per iron, it would save considerable time and it’s easier to get a straight stitch
I've been looking for a hobby lately, I work with horses and when I'm home I'm bored, thought about wood working or something along the lines, but I really want to give a try with working with leather. Any tips on how best to start out?
there are many answers to your question. My advice is to buy a set of esential tools, not many but they have to be good quality tools, otherwise they will make your life a hard one. You need a cutting tool (I use olfa cutters but there are many other good tools), metalic ruler, a good table with a cutting board (find one from industry), a good punching board (from industry), good round punches (or pricking irons) and you need to stitch, so you'll need thread and needles. About the leather... hmmm, I am lucky, i find in Bucharest all sorts of leather so I learned leathercraft on cheap leather, i hope you'll find something similar. And many-many tutorials, watch them and choose what suits you. And something very-very important: you can make mistakes, no one will blame you.
i don't burnish it, I dye it with edge dyes. I use Uniters, but Fenice, Giardini or Kenda Farben are also good (and I think there are many other good edge dyes)
I'm not a leather worker, but this is really nice Buddy....given the current world crisis, when it's over, do you export and if you do I'd like to have one please.
Hi! I just purchased this pattern, it's awesome! I was just wondering what the spacing is between the punch holes in mm? I'm debating on whether to punch holes or just use diamond stitching chisels. Thank you!
Hi. Usually i make holes with a 1.5mm round punch. The distance between holse is 6mm but not everywhere, sometimes is 6+ or 6- mm. I have a few patterns with 5 mm between holes but i use the same 1.5mm round punch. My thread is 1mm nylon waxed thread
@@VasileandPavel Hi. It looks wonderful. I think this is gonna be my next project. But I have 2 mm round punch. Is it ok to work with it or should I buy a 1.5 mm punch? Thank you.
it's better to use a 1.5mm round punch with 1mm waxwed thread. You can use 2mm round punch with 1.2mm waxed thread but you have to know that almost all the patterns ask for 1.5mm round punch. Buy more than one punch and buy punches with long active part. They don;t have to be expensive punches, Wuta is perfect for the job and one punch is arround 7$
2mm stiff leather is good enough but line the contrast leather, the straps needs to be 3.4-4mm thick. Join my FB group and ask there what question you want, I can answer private and if needed, we can wideochat
