'Normandy' by Cyril Crain (Juno Veteran)
    Come and stand in memory
Of men who fought and died
They gave their lives in Normandy
    Remember them with pride.
    Soldiers, Airman, sailors
    Airborne and marines
Who in civvy life were tailors
    and men who worked machines.

    British and Canadian
    And men from USA
    Forces from the Commonwealth
They all were there that day

    To Juno, Sword and Utah
    Beaches of renown
    Also Gold and Omaha
That’s where the ramps went down.

    The battle raged in Normandy
    Many lives were lost
The war must end in victory
And this must be the cost

    When my life is over
And I reach the other side
I’ll meet my friends from Normandy
And shake their hands with pride.

Wonderful editing Sandy & fantastic tour. As I said previously my grandfather landed on Gold beach with British 12th Corps. He followed the war through to its end. One of the biggest battles he was in, was on the left flank of 30th Corps & their push towards Arnhem. Sadly I never met him but have all his military records & accounts from my grandmother. What we don’t appreciate is the share noise sound of the battleships opening fire on what is now a quiet & peaceful place. Apparently he often spoke of how loud it was. But not much else. Cheers Sandy

That was a hell of a powerful montage where you overlaid old wartime footage with modern images, I could feel the chaos and claustrophobia, brilliantly done. Strange how all those young lives were so disposable at the time, but now are given recognition in stone, though I always find it troubling that their elevation in death serves to underwrite the next conflict for the living, rather than cancel or divert it

    • @WiltshireMan
      @WiltshireMan  Год назад +2

I feel the same way Oscar, There will always it seems be another war and another memorial declaring how the massive sacrifice brought peace only to be followed by another war... The "normal" people whether the be "friend or Foe" do not want war or to kill each other, it is govts and the powers that be that pursue war.
The only good thing to come from it is advances in technology and medicine but at huge cost and suffering!

Its good that there are war graves from that period because I will never visit a grave of my great grandfather in world war 1 because he was left to rot on the Gallipoli battelfield in Turkey with thousands of others because of politicians. Never again that I will support intervention in Europe, I served 23 years and they are not worth one drop of British blood.
