I don't get why I got a thumbs down. All I did was notice a very clever switch. It doesn't make Derren Brown any less amazing. He says himself that what he does is down to trickery. Derren Brown is a genius. I love his magic tricks and shows. There is seriously no need for thumbs down people.
Watching him, I immediately thought King (of tens, which of course doesn't exist), then had to go back and see why. When he's telling Stephen what not to pick he flashes both hands (which is where I got ten, but I expect made Stephen think sparkle) and then gestured to his head ... like a crown. Brilliant.
It is very entertaining to see them on screen together. I would like to see Derren Brown on QI. He is fast, witty, educated and his sceptical outlook should help him a great deal.
The king IS in there, but only when the deck is laid out one way up. When it's laid out the other way up, it disappears as the cards are 'misprinted' on one side. You are right though, there are quite a few cards to choose from (more than I said earlier). His first task is to establish whether it's a black or a red. He has two packs of cigarettes in his pocket, one for black, one for red and four cards hidden (pre-rolled up) in each.
This effect is explained in DB's book Pure effect and shown on his double DVD Devil's picture book (a must have for card magicians, I really like the second DVD when he moves in to the psychological leading for card selections).
^^ no I didn't think it was you but thank you for agreeing with me and giving the thumbs up ^_^ Have you seen Derren Brown Paying with paper. It's amazing ^^
@papagena1 RUclips took out the Video, he uses a deck where one side is showing one type of cards and the other shows the other side of card thats why he flips the deck...
Right before the trick, Derren suggests the 3 of hearts (a red card) then he says don't pick the 3 of hearts. This suggested to Fry that he pick a red card but not a heart. At 1:28, Derren makes a diamond shape with his hands right in front of Fry's face. At 1:29 he makes a crown gesture. Also, they are sitting at a square or diamond shaped table.
oh and by the way, he uses a special deck of cards that actually shows different colors and cards when the deck is flipped, also its only about 5 different cards that are repeated
actually, he explained this in 'the derren brown lecture'. there was no king of diamonds. he used an nlp type suggestion to put the image of the KoD in his head and then proceeded. he uses this suggestion in the majority of things he does, in his book he also talks about false memories and why they make for such good effects in magic, which is shown here as fry is sure he saw that card
my opinion( and maybe i am wrong) is that the trick is more simple than putting cards in some sort of order: he takes out the a card and so when a man looks the spreaded deck, subconciously he thinks a card that he didn't find in the deck.of course he did not had the time to search look all this deck but i think his subsconcious found the missing card and traslated to his concious as the card he put in his mind.
What I can see is the table cloths are all red (he would most likely choose a heart or diamond card, also, the tablecloths are pointed like a diamon and not rounded) He told him NOT to go for the 3 of hearts, he told him not to go for the hearts. so the last thing to choose would be diamonds. I'm not too sure about how he got the king...maybe the pictures in the room?
Nuckpang, he shows how this trick (along with a stack of others) is done in 'The Devil's Picturebook'. If you're interested in doing this stuff yourself, it's a great place to start.
It's the setting what does the trick. Black and red colours as seen by 0:19 to 0:23.... Tried the same trick when watching the Derren Brown vs 9 chess players. At the end of the video I asked 10 friends to choose a random card. All of them got the 8 of spades... Nice trick Derren
I cant quite see it well but it seems The first card in the pile (if that's how it's spelled) is a dimond and then he suggest the number three when talking to him, any more clues? ◘◘◘◘◘◘◘◘◘◘◘◘ ◘Att.Dpaz2009◘ ◘◘◘◘◘◘◘◘◘◘◘◘
GUYS LOOK AT 2:20 you can see him throwing the cigg down and picking up the card (looking like a cigg). That's how he used the sleight of hand technique
clever and yea you've made me think in a very different way but im still confident in saying that a lot of what derren brown does is subtelty. i say a lot but i guess thats all relative. This trick well obviously im probably wrong in whatever way i think but i would've guessed he made him choose the card. can you explain exactly what you thinks goin on then please?
"BIG" three, "BIG HEART" -- the biggest heart would be a King or Ace (but since King is paint with lots of detail on the card, I think most people think of a King) -- the subject then scans the deck for a big red King, sees the Kh and chooses diamonds to be "tricky". That's my theory :)
I don't know, does he flip the deck though? I've watched him gather up the cards again and again, and unless he does it so quickly that the camera doesn't catch it (hard to tell on youtube), I don't think he does. He lays them out, gathers them up,twiddles them a little in his hand, but it looks like a back and forward motion rather than a flipping one, and then lays them down the same way again.Tbh, seeing what Derren can convince people of,I'd be suprised if he felt he NEEDED a trick deck :P
Interesting how stuff stephen says afterwards comes from what derren said to him before ... he wantsto 'burn it in' - not a particularly ordinary phrase... but derren says it a few times in the beginning....
dude i saw that 2:02 card change too but the thing is 1)he has to guess King of diamond 2)take the diamond King from the deck so he does not see,and then change the cigarette.great trick
It's a trick deck with the same 6 cards repeated - he is told not to pick the 3 of hearts and the ace of spades is purposely put on top to put him off picking that one too, so he only has a choice of 4. Derren just guessed the right one first (hence the get-out of 'it's NOT the King of Diamonds is it?') If Steven had sounded a negative, Derren's statement would have still been correct. He has all four possible choices pre-rolled and hidden in the pack of cigarettes.
he actually explains in detail himself how he does it in his book, and in his instruction videoes of card tricks.. think it was called the smoke trick or something..
OMG I was about to type that exact same thing! Apart from the different country part... But seriously I was gonna put that like word for word! Seriously! Wow.I love them both. Let's be friends ;)
Not to say that he isn't using a trick deck too, although I'd be amazed if Fry didn't notice that, he's a smart guy, and used to do card tricks himself. Plus if you pause at the end you can clearly see 18 individual cards. But I think it's mostly, if not all, mental tricks.
Yes, but he doesn't say "it's not the King of Diamonds, is it?", he says "just keep repeating that to yourself, King of Diamonds, King of Diamonds..." he goes straight for it. Plus Stephen looked at the deck and confirmed that there wasn't a King of Diamonds in there at all. It is a psychological trick, watch his hands before he does the trick, he's tapping his temples to make Stephen think of a crown and when he's talking about the three of hearts he's making a diamond shape with his hands.
my guess... when hes giving the example out of 3 of hearts. he does a diamond kinda shape with his hands. then points to his head and says "repeat it in your HEAD". so its gonna be a card with a head on it. not sure how he made him pick king though
Yeah . some people think they know everything about card tricks. Most of the tricks he performs on that DVD/VHS looks simple but involves some sneaky moves
most of derren browns tricks are psychological, i believe that, but this one isn't i can honestly say it, because i perform this trick all the time. i dont do a version of it, im positive i do the exact same trick. theres a bit of editing in this vid too, without revealing too much.
For any trick where the magician guesses a card that the subject picks, and then the card is missing, it is a forced pick. The impressive part is in HOW the subject gets forced to pick the card they did. They have the illusion of choice, but that is all it is. An illusion. How did Derren make him pick KD? I don't know, but it is a trick and nothing more, and Deren himself will not suggest otherwise. He is a master showman, and that is what's most important.
And... even if we solve the mystery of when he switched the cigarette for the rolled-up card, how the hell did he know which card Stephen had chosen? And how did he happen to have that one rolled up into a cigarette? Did he prime him to choose the king of diamonds somehow?
I do not get it, even when you are telling it, so it doesn´t really spoil it for me :-). I love the compliment Mr. Fry gives to the magician on the end :-D, very decent, innit?!! :-)
Sorry but I know i'm right, seen as how he teaches you this exact trick in his book "Pure Effect", its called smoke, and is not psychological. Its a card trick.
anyone else thinking king of diamonds? I started with 7 of hearts when he said 3 of hearts, but then switched to king of diamonds...spooky. I can only figure that the red table is a diamond, and Derren makes a gesture like a guy wearing a crown...
Also let me put it to you this way, what if this wasn't Derren Brown, what if it was just some bloke of youtube, or Paul daniels, or heck even David Blaine, would you still come out with these "psychological" explanations, or would you just accept it purely as a trick...
My two favorite entertainers in the world right here. Coincidence that they're both of a different sexual orientation and from a different country then me? .....probably.
wtf are you talking about? that s just completely wrong -he didnt explain this in his lecture -he doesn't use any suggestion -he doesn't use suggestion ist the majority of things he does -fry did see the KoD
My brain can't deal with this video - two of my favourite people in the world in one video, brilliant :D
xx

How can you not love Stephen Fry.
The king IS in there, but only when the deck is laid out one way up. When it's laid out the other way up, it disappears as the cards are 'misprinted' on one side. damn! I like the slight of hand where he switches the cigarettes! First time I've actually seen it happen.
This effect is published in Derren Brown's book, Pure Effect, which is unfortunately out of print now.
2:19 I can't believe how slick the switch-off was between the cigarette and the card!
Exactly. Derren really looks like he does rather adore and respect the man. And rightly so. :D
Why bother to figure it out? It's a great effect, and Derren is one of the best cardmagicians I've ever seen.
Just enjoy it!
how can anyone not love stephen fry?

me too! (i hope we are talking about stephen fry) if i could choose to meet anyone in the world it would be him, closely followed by alan alda
Indeed, and who can blame him? Fry, what a legend!
actually, he explained this in 'the derren brown lecture'. there was no king of diamonds. he used an nlp type suggestion to put the image of the KoD in his head and then proceeded. he uses this suggestion in the majority of things he does, in his book he also talks about false memories and why they make for such good effects in magic, which is shown here as fry is sure he saw that card

I'm not too sure about how he got the king...maybe the pictures in the room?
thanks. That was pretty fast DL speed.
Pure Effect and Devil's Picturebook (which is a DVD)
Nuckpang, he shows how this trick (along with a stack of others) is done in 'The Devil's Picturebook'. If you're interested in doing this stuff yourself, it's a great place to start.
I just noticed that. Thats great slight of hand
1:35 As he spreads the cards the first time he points at the one he wants him to choose.
fry and brown! love it!
Is it just me or does he say teenager "kings"?
Also @chrisreddie, that's spot on! thanks for explaining
yeah , i watched that tutorial on the "devils picture book" , and that was more simple that i thought of.
I cant quite see it well but it seems The first card in the pile (if that's how it's spelled) is a dimond and then he suggest the number three when talking to him, any more clues?

haha i love stephen fry's reactions
yes its true you can see the switch at 2:20. he changes the cigarette for the playing card underneath the table
clever and yea you've made me think in a very different way but im still confident in saying that a lot of what derren brown does is subtelty. i say a lot but i guess thats all relative. This trick well obviously im probably wrong in whatever way i think but i would've guessed he made him choose the card. can you explain exactly what you thinks goin on then please?
that trick is amazing
I'm just guessing, but did the tables looked like "diamond" color? the same with the cigarretes? marlboro?
"I'll look away as you do it so I don't catch a glimpse at where you might be looKING"
@negvey yeah people will watch. I sure would like to know how its done.

Does anyone know what kind of fan Derren uses at the conclusion of the trick, it looks like he pulls the cards up a little.
i didnt give you thumbs down, i agreed with you. (if you thought it was me) in fact i will thumbs up it now, to return it to 0...
:)
dude i saw that 2:02 card change too but the thing is 1)he has to guess King of diamond 2)take the diamond King from the deck so he does not see,and then change the cigarette.great trick
What's the tune called, the one that runs in the beginning? I've been lookin´ for it for ages now :D
That was a very quick switch between the card and the cigarette. I just about saw it.
It's a trick deck with the same 6 cards repeated - he is told not to pick the 3 of hearts and the ace of spades is purposely put on top to put him off picking that one too, so he only has a choice of 4.

I still don't get it. How do you force the king of diamonds?
@andyf2280 Derren has that quote in his testimonials on his website. Right at the top.
@negvey I tried this link, and it's just the same video of the trick happening. Can you post a video of how the trick is done?
he actually explains in detail himself how he does it in his book, and in his instruction videoes of card tricks.. think it was called the smoke trick or something..
He did something psychological indeed. I was thinking about the king of diamonds as well.
this video was good
wanting new friends Jg

I have it too. Great trick.
mind power deck - for all who want 2 perform it..
It is a psychological trick, watch his hands before he does the trick, he's tapping his temples to make Stephen think of a crown and when he's talking about the three of hearts he's making a diamond shape with his hands.
my guess...
when hes giving the example out of 3 of hearts. he does a diamond kinda shape with his hands. then points to his head and says "repeat it in your HEAD". so its gonna be a card with a head on it. not sure how he made him pick king though
where do I see him downloading stephen fry's thoughts?
can anybody tell in which point he did light up the card?
Yes that one is awesome ^_^
Yeah . some people think they know everything about card tricks. Most of the tricks he performs on that DVD/VHS looks simple but involves some sneaky moves
you can just about see him put the card up his sleeve right before he clicks his fingers at 1:38 to ^^
lol hax?
im open for influence here so il be happy to agree with ya but i need some explanations here...
1:42 he turns the deck 180 degrees, that's why the king of diamonds 'disappeared'.
Subliminal messaging: he was tapping his temples when asking to think of a card at 1.29
Yes
most of derren browns tricks are psychological, i believe that, but this one isn't
i can honestly say it, because i perform this trick all the time.
i dont do a version of it, im positive i do the exact same trick.
theres a bit of editing in this vid too, without revealing too much.
savage you can see him wrap the king of diamonds around the cigerette when he pulls acros the cards! ;)

whats the music called?
@mikef179 Check out Derren's The Devil's Picturebook. He explains this trick in detail.
You're wrong by the way =P
how's it done?
awsum!
Thats not why he eliminated the 3 of hearts. Check out the Devils Picturebook for the explanation.
A trick deck, a selection of force cards in his pocket and a lapped cigarette. Don't try this trick on a carpeted floor, kids!
he drops the real cigarette at 2:20 lol.. so smooth
Yes but it's a bloody fast switch I only noticed because i've watched the trick several times.
@DonJusty Still a good switch
which hand???
Where Derren is concerned, there is ALWAYS something psychological involved.
I do not get it, even when you are telling it, so it doesn´t really spoil it for me :-).
I love the compliment Mr. Fry gives to the magician on the end :-D, very decent, innit?!! :-)
i don't know about the king but i'm betting that the square red table was used to put diamonds in his mind
there is 3 foce cards, i thin its king of diamond 4 of spades and 3 of hearts / diamonds
I finally know how this works..!he performed it perfectly tho
Sorry but I know i'm right, seen as how he teaches you this exact trick in his book "Pure Effect", its called smoke, and is not psychological. Its a card trick.
