Late 90's Rare was lightning in a bottle. Everything they touched turned to gold.

But people and businesses now act like that is some magical untouchable thing of the past...."lightning in a bottle" happened all the time in movies, tv, games...it's nothing special, it's a natural outcome of giving genuine and passionate creatives the freedom to create what they want to create. EVERYTHING now is basically 100% controlled and dominated by corporate executives forcing "content creators" to churn out more and more "content" according to their specific demands which are based on internet data which tells them what will sell best...and internet data, being all based on analyzing old stuff, obviously never suggests anything creatively new and different. Industries have apparently entirely forgotten that EVERY franchise that they now sell like hot cakes was originally so massive and popular because it was new and different...and these things were so new and different and cool because they were created by rag tag teams of passionate, genuine artists and craftsmen being allowed at least a fair measure of creative freedom to do what they wanted.

One of the issues with The World Is Not Enough compared to GoldenEye is the gunplay - and enemy models that look like action figures. It's such a "tiny" detail that changes too much on how the game feels to play. Their animations are stiff and you can see all the model joints, and feels like you're shooting concrete walls.
This is sadly something seen on all Bond games after GoldenEye due to the censorship applied by Columbia, as they requested to have the least graphic violence which is why we don't see blood in Bond since GoldenEye. I feel like the EA games are the ones that feel the most affected by this as they decided to not even have sparks or smoke by Nightfire which felt like you were shooting nothing at all, at least we got a satisfying headshot sound. GoldenEye Wii played on a Wii Zapper though feels amazing.
Great video and really happy you could find use to my footage!

That's really well said Graslu. I didn't think of it that way, but now that you bring up those points, it makes perfect sense. I do agree, the interaction with the guards and the environment (as well as the guns themselves) were kind of lackluster. I think that may be part of what holds it back. Though it was still one of my favorites (except for that submarine level).

it never took itself too seriously, and it had funny quirks like scientists throwing grenades, random animations on computer screens, everything being explosive for no reason, and the ability to dual-wield _any_ weapon, no matter how big and heavy it was.

A few thoughts for why GoldenEye stands out more.
    1. The film it was based on was a knock-out with a strong plot and cast, while TWINE wasn't as strong as a film
    2. It was made by Rare who deliveried so many memorable n64 titles
    3. The game had set a really high benchmark for games following it
    4. The game was actually sharper visually in a lot of ways compared to TWINE. Character models weren't as blocky, textures weren't grainy, the weapons were distinctive and had more variety, shooting enemies limbs felt more precise and realistic
    5. As you mentioned, levels didn't feel as linear and were really immersive. Levels like Dam, Facility, Silo, Frigate, Bunker, Streets, Control, Cradle are super memorable too while the TWINE levels blend into one (barring maybe Kings Ransom and Night Watch)
    6. Grant Kirkhope's soundtrack was fantastic and really captured the Bond theme, whereas TWINEs was repetitive and not as relatable to bond
    7. The single player missions were stronger. 20 compared to 14, included 2 bonus levels, let players explore, experiment and make mistakes whereas TWINE often ended the level for you if you failed
    8. GoldenEye had freedom and customisation in multiplayer whereas you were restricted in TWINE (e.g. 'good' characters cannot fight each other)
    9. Goldeneye had cheats like DK Mode which made experimenting further a blast

    • @Treblaine

It's strange how many stake holders found the things people loved about Goldeneye and said "we're never allowing that again!".
I still think Goldeneye has some of the best enemy animations, not for their fidelity but for how expressive they are in response to every input. In games today bullet sponges are still the norm who just ignore being shot multiple times until they suddenly crumple like a puppet thats had its strings cut.
By making enemies react to every shot it made every action in the game impactful. The enemy even reacted to shots that missed.

I got my start teaching in the former Soviet Union as a Peace Corps volunteer, I worked in Moldova a few years earlier. At this point in time, post-Soviet or Russian settings have become really popular in gaming, so like I said, FPS games like Goldeneye and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. really inspired me to learn more about this region and learn Russian. :)
As for your gun collection, hopefully you can get your hands on more firearms used in Goldeneye. The film had no where near as many guns as the game did, but they still used some interesting weapons that didn't appear in the game (such as Alec Trevelyan's Browning BDM pistol, Valentin Zukovsky's CZ-52 pistol, and of course the AKS-74U that James Bond uses throughout the movie). Maybe some of these might be worth mentioning? (I actually have seen semi-automatic conversations of AKS-74U's available, but they fall under the category of a short-barreled rifle, they require the NFA paperwork and transfer fee).

Thanks. I don’t know if I mentioned this but I’m a teacher myself. We have something in common there. I would like to do more guns from Goldeneye and I may eventually. One sticking point (for now at least) has been the very restrictive laws in my state (Maryland). That automatically rules out even semi auto versions of the Spyder (klobb), MP5 (DK5 Deutsch) and of course the AK47 and AKS-74u. It’s very frustrating dealing with these particular regulations. If I can find someone who has one that’s grandfathered in or if I travel to PA and shoot someone’s rifle there then it could be done. Still trying to work that out.

I can't believe you only have less than 500 subs, this was insanely good! Usually you see high quality videos like this made by people with an audience of 100,000+. Awesome editing and presentation. Goldeneye actually came out a few years before I was even born, so by the time I was playing it as a kid it was already dated but even to this day I still come back to it because, frankly, there is just something magical about it. Actually the same could be said for basically all of Rare's 90's titles. Play anything they've made in the last decade or two under the Microsoft banner and it's almost like it's not even the same company at all. I suspect the fact that Goldeneye being the one of the first Bond games made by a bunch of developers with little experience meant that it didn't suffer from corporate meddling and high sales expectations; it was just a bunch of guys having fun while making a game that we would have fun playing with. Sure the game does have flaws but i'd take a flawled passion project with heart over a technically perfect game with no soul. The by gamers for gamers philosophy just doesn't really exist in triple A game studios anymore and I think it's fitting that the two best candidates for true sequel status are made by modders and indie devs.

One thing I will add that you and Yannick touched upon was the music. Music adds so much to the environment and gameplay "feel". For example, Surface II felt like something was wrong and was ominous, not only because of the red sky and guys chasing you but because of the music as well. In contrast, Silo has very hectic music that was fast-paced which fit perfectly in the way that level played.
Overall, GoldenEye was such a special game and is in my opinion arguably the best FPS of all time.

@@wet-read This is just my opinion, we all have our own. For me Goldeneye is not just merely better...it's *_WAY_* better than any of those games. Personally I'm just not into sci-fi themes/aliens, etc. I just couldn't get into that kind of stuff. That's more of a personal preference thing more than anything. Something about Perfect Dark just didn't click with me. It just didn't feel the same. The style and format was the same, but it just didn't do much for me. For me it's like comparing a cheesy 80's "B" action flick to a more benchmark movie.
Goldeneye looked great graphically back then (even now it's not as horrible as one would think) and everything just felt "right" about it. Now the AI enemies are definitely dated by today's standards. But other than stuff like that, the overall experience and feel of the game matters more to me. Games now are much more advanced, better graphics etc. but I've never really played anything since then that captured my attention like that game. It's pretty much the same thing like why lots of people like old music/albums from many decades back compared to music of today.

      You forgot QUAKE (1996).
QUAKE was the first fully 3D FPS game ever made, and literally set all the standards for every other 3D FPS game that came out afterwards.
There would be no Goldeneye, Halo, Half-Life, Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Call of Duty, or any other 3D FPS games, without QUAKE.
Wolfenstein, DOOM, and QUAKE set the standards for the FPS genre in their own respects, and everything that came out after those games, simply took the ideas and standards that Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM, and QUAKE set for the FPS genre.
QUAKE 2 was the gold standard of FPS games in 1997, not Goldeneye.
Unreal (1998) was literally created as a QUAKE killer, not a Goldeneye killer.
A lot of people overrate Goldeneye, especially when games like QUAKE 2, TUROK, and HEXEN 2 came out the same year as Goldeneye in 1997, which blew Goldeneye out of the water, both technologically and gameplay-wise.
Halo: CE is a 2001 repackaging of ideas and features from other FPS games that came out in the 1990s, and is also overrated, and given praise and credit for things that it did not do first.
Goldeneye and Halo are good games, but they are not these extremely innovative marvels, that so many people falsely give them credit for.
This problem is due to Goldeneye and Halo being popular.
Therefore, they receive unwarranted credit and praise for innovations they did not invent, and were actually done by other FPS games that came out before them, or even during the same year.

I honestly think it’s the little things most Bond devs (and FPS developers in general) miss about what made Goldeneye work.
    1. Non-linear level design. No current developer in their right mind would create dead-ends and useless rooms in their levels, but it’s these dead ends that make Goldeneye’s levels both memorable and alive feeling.
    2. Objective-based gameplay and difficulty. So many modern FPSes adhere mostly to levels where the objective is either to get from point A to point B or to kill all the enemies. These aren’t bad in and of themselves, but they get old after a while when those are the only two things you’re doing every level. Goldeneye had variety. Maybe you need to blow up a bunch of computers, or install a hacking device, or (my favorite) scare Boris into giving you access to the bad guy’s security system. You never know what you might need to do from level to level, and then you up the difficulty and realize you have even MORE things to do.
    3. It’s a video game first and foremost. If it’s fun to do, the devs probably included it. Cheats, silly enemy animations, things exploding that shouldn’t explode, being able to carry as many guns as you want, hell even the multiplayer mode in its entirety was added mostly because the devs thought it was fun. Games are often too self serious most of the time and that can kill the fun in an otherwise very well made game.

I like the high production values of this video and that you keep your equipment unhidden. But one gripe, I would've trimmed the ending milliseconds off of any clips where you're speaking to camera, since your eyes visibly drift back to the teleprompter.
I like what you said about Goldeneye's environments; the video game levels felt like real places that one needs to wander around in, rather than an environment specifically designed for the mission itself. I liked the winding hallways and "useless" rooms of facility because it felt more real.

No other FPS game outside of GE and PD has that same feeling of actually hitting your target. The sound effects on hit are not necessarily realistic but extremely satisfying. The way the guards stagger, allowing you to fairly handle a whole bunch of them at the same time as long as your aim is good enough..chef's kiss. The music is amazing, some of the most memorable soundtracks in all of gaming.
The weapon and multiplayer variety of PD is still unmatched by any other game. Over 24 years ahead of its time as of today meaning we might never see anything like it ever again.

    @Visstnok 4 года назад

Fantastic video! Had me completely engaged.
I myself didn't play GoldenEye. Only caught a few glimpses of it here and there. But it's very easy for me to understand why the game was, and still is, so important to many. I'd feel just the same if I had played it.
PS2 was however my first console, and Nightfire the first game I popped into it. Both were a reward for not eating candy for half a year. Originally it was a whole year, but I know the reward was expedited, though I think the obligations ran the full year. Consoles and games weren't easy to get your hands on as a kid. And now that you give a rundown of all the games, I'm even more thankful it was Nightfire I ended up with.
This title has brought me and friends so much joy over the years. Not even funny how it keeps on giving, with something new to get from it every time I revisit. Latest turn of events is playing it on Dolphin Emulator in 4K with remapped controls and save states. Still working on improving the setup, but it's already at a place where the best improvement would be my old friend who'd still want to play, coming to see me.
We always manage to find new ways to play the game, with the right combinations of map, game mode, bot configurations and random weapon set. On the new setup, we'll have even more to mix it up with. 6 bots as opposed to the 4 on PS2 is a welcome change. My newest crazy idea is to have each controller control two players, so you'll have to keep switching perspectives to not be a sitting duck. Have to mention it's very fun coming back to Nightfire with all the skills I've acquired from other games over the years. Always seem to discover a new technique or quirk to exploit, and it's fun to know I would have blown 9-year-old me out of the water at the game.
I did also get Everything or Nothing as a kid. Enjoyed it quite a bit. Though I'm sad there isn't much depth to how it's played. That is to say, there are far too few stealth sequences. Heck, there isn't even one full stealth mission! Every level where you start out stealthily, there will without failure be a point where the enemies just magically know you're there. Sad, because stealth is where the game truly shines.
The regular gunfighting that was fun in Nightfire, is now a clunky mess that is best avoided by standing behind a corner until everyone has run mindlessly towards you or peaked from cover in the exact same manner one too many times. Everything or Nothing is extremely restricted in anything you do; not sandbox-like at all, which is what it needs to capture the Bond essence. I ask, is it even a shooter if you can't point and shoot your gun wherever you want? Has anyone ever managed to throw a coin grenade where they wanted? I did enjoy the game, but its unrealized potential is just disheartening. Fun fact: The game is more enjoyable to play if you use save states as a game mechanic, because you can pull off the things you otherwise would have if the gameplay was more refined.
As for its multiplayer, you're not the only one who don't remember it. But I do. The deathmatch mode was just some brawler nonsense on three maps, which, by the way, you had to unlock every single one of by playing co-op. Now, the co-op is actually very decent if you can get into it with someone. This is where you'll find that the game does in fact have full stealth missions, which are ridiculously fun! I haven't found anyone on RUclips who tried to 100% the co-op, just people going through the motions with it. I did find this video through a comment you left on someone's gameplay, asking if you could use it, so there's that at least.
But, yeah, the EoN co-op is a hidden gem. Sadly it's hard to have the circumstances to enjoy it. If they had gotten rid of the tacked-on co-op door opening, and let you play them solo if you wanted, these missions would have a place in people's hearts just as much as the main game, if not more.
As for Rogue Agent, it's a comedic disgrace. Did gobble it up as a kid at a friend's house, but trying to play it now, the 30 fps combined with atrociously irresponsive controls get the better of me. The game does however provide some genuine entertainment for it's cheesiness and child-like story. It could have been a fun action game if it was more fluent, though.
If anyone read through this, thanks for listening. Have lots of thoughts about these games, but as we know there aren't many places to discuss them thoroughly. I feel this video is one that says meaningful, genuine and original things. So I'll add to it to the best of my ability.
As someone mentioned, it'd be interesting to hear your full take on why new Bond games aren't a thing anymore, and also what direction you'd like to see them take a new Bond game in.
Once again, thanks for the vid! Easy sub.

My answer for why Goldeneye is my favourite purely based on how it feels is "Half Life 2".
Let me explain, the way a shooter feels is very important, the physics of HL2 isn't just a toy for the player to mess with it's integral to placing the player in the world of the game, Goldeneye of course isn't as detailed as HL2 but for the time it's very impressive, as mentioned objects can be destroyed and explode, there are many interactive doors that can be used to block bullets, empty casings flip out of the guns realistically, the actions on pistols animate, guards hats can be shot off, the physics of thrown objects feels really satisfying, it all adds up to create a real and physical feeling that we didn't see again until Perfect Dark and many games after didn't match.
The World is Not Enough is great i love that game and it has enough of its own polish to brag about but it compares similarly to other shooters in terms of feel, there's not a lot of physical connection to the world for the most part you just shoot people and they die and the levels are just a backdrop not part of the gameplay, that's not a negative it's how most games are, but i hope the comparison speaks to why Goldeneye is so special, it has more "parts" than you'd think at first glance, and the sum of its parts elevates it above its contemporaries.

Hey, first time seeing your channel (probably because of the relatively recent addition of GoldenEye 007 to the NSO). Really love your style and presentation, as well as your attention to detail; your genuine love for the game shines brightly for all to see.
Funny enough, despite being a HUGE fan of Bond growing up, I'd only ever played GoldenEye (partly because for years I didn't have a PS2, and partly because the follow-ups didn't seem to have the same charm to them, from what little I remember of various classmates who did play them), but like everyone else who has played it I've inwardly always wanted more time to play the mythical man in his various adventures. A lot of your conclusions as to why GE stands out hold up, I believe - it was built by a team that didn't know what they couldn't do, but knew enough about Bond to want to bring that experience to the console.

Something to add that maybe wouldn't work nowadays is the lack of checkpoints like were in old videos games. Beating high difficulty levels in our favorite 007 game was something to admire, I remember this level named Caves (I believe) that was actually very hard and lacking of health power was the real deal. I was young and maybe I wasn't making the best approach but honestly I loved this game more than a lot.
Your documentary is like a treasure box for me, it opened a vast area of nostalgic memories and fun memories too. When we grow up we know that we are meant to mature, but these things are like stories from our past.

It’s a shame that Ken Lobb thought Rare developing another Bond game would have been too costly, and that MGM actually allowed that garbage by EA (surprise) to be released.
GoldenEye is special to me because I was twelve at the time it released, and most everyone had it, so all of my friends and I would get together and play it solid after school and on weekends. Once we got into junior high, we went our separate ways and I wasn’t as interested in playing Bond games. Nothing could come close to the same experience.
I do remember playing “The World is Not Enough” with some of that same group of friends, but it was a rental, and we only played it for maybe an hour at best. One thing I remember specifically is that I told one friend to shoot an ammo crate, which subsequently exploded and killed him, to which he replied “What!? You _knew_ that was going to happen!” However, I didn’t know. We used to shoot the ammo crates into a single room on Facility in GoldenEye and have one guy guard it while three attacked. It took a long time to set-up those matches.
Some life happened and I was living with some extended family. That’s when Nightfire released, and I remember playing that just as much as I had played GoldenEye. The multiplayer was great. After that, however, I never touched another Bond game.
I still have yet to try the newly-released version of GoldenEye because of the requirements to acquire it (I refuse to pay for Game Pass on Xbox, and haven’t been able to buy Nintendo’s premium online subscription).
One day I will try it out.
In closing, I guess what makes GoldenEye stand out from the rest is that it was the first Bond game where many memories were created, it was true-enough (faithful) to the movie (which I didn’t see until a year after the game released), the graphics were great for the time, as well as all the added details, unlocks, and even the glitches made it such a memorable and sought-after experience.

The end of the Dam leads to the start of the Facility, the Facility leads right to the start of the Runway, especially if you use the double doors, and so on for many of the other levels. This really enhanced the feel and interest into each level for me.

Goldeneye has many brilliant variations of the Bond theme, take the watch menu for example. Surprisingly, the PS1 edition of TWINE, while an inferior game, has the better soundtrack of the two.

You raise a VERY good point, my friend (One I didn’t get around to making). The music on the ps1 is superior often and that actually doesn’t surprise me given its optical storage capabilities. It is interesting that they managed to license the bond theme for one, but not the other though.

Best Bond game for me is everything or nothing then it's from Russia with love. I even have 007 racing in my list. One of the few games I would buy if I was to get back another OG PlayStation. Loved golden eye though. I would literally buy an n64 just for golden eye and perfect dark.

Pure nostalgie ! Niet te vergeten dat we toen van 2D naar echte 3D zijn gegaan, en dat dit voor velen de eerste echte ervaring was met dergelijke games. Ook voor mij was het ongelooflijk destijds! Veel mooie herinneringen aan dit spel !

Nightfire is basically a reboot of moonraker as far as plot. Clear up to a fight with lasers on a space station

so happy we finally have goldeneye 007 playable on xbox one. hopefully it gets a sequel and dlc someday.
i remember people saying there would someday be more levels like the multi-player pyramid/temple type one and that people loved that level so much it basically went viral though this was before people used the word viral that way so another terminology would have been used but same essential impression, that it was going to get a story added to it some how. someday. no idea if they really planned on adding things to the game but my friends said they did and produced articles and forum posts and such seeming to corroborate it at the time. no idea how they would have done it since n64 never got online functionality or the 8 controller ports it was eventually supposed to have and even the ability to connect the back of the gameshark pro cartridge to a pc for online functionality for the game and gameshark never did work at all, think someone told me that port was a dud/dummy port and didnt work or something.
everyone calls goldeneye a shooter and one of hte first mainstream/successful first person shooters that helped form a new genre
but to me its a visual story a video game a movie in a different format an interactive game a stealth game a spy game and mission oriented immersive story driven and as open world explorable adventure game as you could get that type of game ot be on the n64 hardware. its also a casual game and not too hard once you get the hang of it, it has 3 default difficulties and a custom difficulty and you can make it easier with certain movement skills and experience and strategies and ways of going through the level, etcetera. i love all the secret doors in archives and library and temple, never seen those in a game b4 or since. then you could make it even easier with cheat codes and gameshark cheats/codes.
yet even some of the secret agent and 00 agent levels are still playable for casual gamers
and i love how the game incentivizes and rewards slow casual stealthy gameplay at times and seemed designed for it. normally i'd play the missions through first and slowly unlock all the missions and then go back later and unlock the difficulties and/or do the timed runs to get the codes/cheats unlocked, and then play it again for fun very slow and methodical without worrying if the mission failed or not, etcetera. each level could be played 5-10 times per person without it being an issue at all and still stay fun, and then you could play everything again on multiplayer and if you couldn't unlock everything and didnt have a friend or family member to help, then there was gameshark, or apparently there were button combinations you could imput on the controller though i didnt know that back then.
the game is very open ended and something for everyone but yet feels immersive and not lacking for something to do, but yet on dam if you want you can skip everything and not kill a single enemy, only have to shoot once to break the padlock on the gate and run and jump off the dam to end the level, its hilarious to just stun the enemies by pretending they arent even there sometimes.
only bad thing about the xbox one version so far really is the fog is missing and even on agent/easy difficulty the ai/soldiers are way too aware/alert and far-sighted compared to the original game, its much harder to sneak up on them now, sometimes they act like they are still 00 agent instead of agent in terms of their ai level.
but yeah hopefully we get a sequel eventually and/or dlc
and for some reason neither the world is not enough or perfect dark felt right as a sucessor game to goldeneye, art style was too different for both, animation differences too much between perfect dark and goldeneye, weapons handle too differently in perfect dark, the ai were way too difficult in perfect dark at times, etcetera.
barely played the sequel to perfect dark that became a prequel perfect dark zero, just feels strange and they changed joanna from dark hair to a red head and changed her whole personality it seemed at times.
i keep reading that the new AAAA studio microsoft started is apparently working on a new perfect dark game either a reboot or sequel, so i'm hoping its good, it would be really cool to have a new franchise with a female spy like bond but her own character. and more stealthy like bond. tomb raider is great but i like stealthy games and tomb raider is more action/adventury then mystery/spy/stealth like bond is.
i think its the story and level design that help make goldeneye so good also. similar to why i enjoyed some of the halo 2 multiplayer levels but havent really gotten into any other halo game. destiny and destiny 2 are the closest games i've found comparable to goldeneye in how they feel and immersivity when playing them.
though there was one game on playstation 3 i played a couple times at a friends house in college called resistance: fall of man if i recall the title correctly that in some ways reminded me of goldeneye in art style theming and aesthetics to an extent and how the story telling was interesting at times and drew you in.
also growing up i always wanted a sequel to goldeneye where you played as natalya or that option added to the game, everyone wanted to play 007 in multiplayer i always wanted to play natalya and since usually you just see a hand sometimes i imagined i was playing as natalya in the campaign.

The best thing in Agent under fire is the Bond moments.
They could take that much further , it is a feature I'd add in the hypothetical perfect 007 FPS game.
