Pilates Stretches for Hip Opening

If you suffer from hip pain and tightness, the exercises in this pilates workout will help with hip opening and flexibility. If you are an avid runner, cyclist or walker, or just sit a lot for work, I'll show you how to stretch your hips with these hip opener exercises. This will also improve your hip mobility and range of motion, which are key for injury prevention. Also, if you suffer from lower back pain, tight hips may be a contributing factor; therefore, stretching and loosening up your hips, especially tight hip flexors, can help your lower back as well.
These hip stretches are perfect for beginners or any level, and can be done from the comfort of your own home. Let me know in the comments how these hip stretches worked for you!

This was a great workout to stretch and open up my hips, while also incorporating some good core and glute strength work! It also helped relieve lower back pain I was experiencing. I highly recommend it!

Hi Calin, do you have any gentler beginner excercises for someone with a arthritic hip in pain. My husbands osteopath suggested gentle Pilates but I think these are too difficult to start with. 😀
Hi Avril, there are definitely gentler exercises and modifications to do for arthritic hips. Light strengthening of the muscles around the hips, including the quads, hamstrings, glutes and core, can help. I have some true beginner workouts (including the 5-day Intro to Pilates series), that would be a good place to start!

What does it mean if ur hip pops everytime u do the toe tap?? Is that bad?
It's hard to say, but generally it's when a muscle or tendon is moving over a bony part of your hip. If it continues to happen, or is painful, then you may want to have a doctor or PT check it out. They may be able to give you certain exercises/stretches to help it. Hope that helps!
