The mother has sadness as the head of her emotion because sadness allows more room for empathy and understanding. The father's leading emotion is anger to signify he may be driven, ambitious, or could have an extreme focus on accomplishing goals. Riley just having Joy be the leader for her isn't healthy because it can put her into a sense of denial when she is insisting everything is fine and she would have no reason to be sad. She would lose an empathetic link or even a capacity to show compassion for others.
Mother’s Mind (Sadness in Charge) = Holding onto the past, gets depressed when life is too difficult, seeks comfort when overwhelmed. Father’s Mind (Anger in Charge) Worried about the future, gets frustrated when things go wrong, shuts reality out when overwhelmed.
People telling Sadness not to touch anything is literally the problem the movie wanted to show. Lmaoo sadness is needed and every memory has more than one emotion. No memory is pure joy or anger or sadness. Every memory may have one or two main emotions but there are other emotions mixed in.
Zanna, also known as Imaginary Friends, are a type of creature that act as guides and guardian angels to children in need of them. They do so under the guise of being a child's imaginary friend for as long as the child needs them, but once the child no longer needs them, the Zanna leaves and moves on to another child.
7:50 Sorry, but Joy was to blame. Joy was trying to keep Sadness compartmentalized (all in the circle) and in a box instead of letting her be felt which made Riley lose control of her emotions.
20:00 and 20:23, I understand why you're questioning why Sadness is running from Joy, but I can relate; for their entire existence, Joy has been gaslighting and berating Sadness for "hurting Riley" and when people keep telling you that something is your fault or that you're a problem then you begin to believe it. I know for myself. Would you suddenly trust somebody who has consistently shunned you and told you that you're a problem? That said, I agree that this situation is drastic. But Sadness is difficult to control when Sadness has not been allowed to do her job.
But the real sad thing is that she ran away because she felt that Riley would be better off without her. But for the record Joy didn't gaslight Sadness she, she just liked being in control way to much.
I've heard several theories about the parents emotions, that the mom may be prone to depression and the father has anger management issues. I personally think, I has to do with Empathy for the mom (the ability to recognize, understand, and share the thoughts and feelings of another person) and irritability for the father ( likely to become frustrated or upset easily.) ❤️🤷🏻♀️
Yeah I agree. I also think that whether or not joy fronts is probably related to maturity. Since joy seems to be quite reckless, selfish and not very empathetic
@@gramamamma6026 To be fair, Mom's Sadness is a lot calmer and more tempered than Riley's Sadness, so I think emotional maturity is considered separate from the Core Emotions from the film's perspective. So an adult with Joy as the leading Core Emotion would probably be a dreamer and optimist, but wouldn't be as reckless as a child with the same Core Emotion Leader.
There’s one little detail I just picked up on: while the others have the same hair and eye color as their body, Joy seems to be the only one who doesn’t (her body is amber yet her hair and eyes are blue). I think that was a clever foreshadowing.
I think joy and sadness being sent away from HQ was a subtle hint at letting the other emotions express themselves and have joy come back later, however sadness got caught in the suction of the recall tube
Fun fact: Riley's car trip was from Minnesota to San Francisco, so the first part would be boring (east SD, Nebraska, and/or Iowa), but there would be lots of cool mountains and scenery for a good portion of the trip (Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, and Nevada).
The leader Emotion is probably decided similarly to Riley's, the first is made leader or makes themself the boss. BUT, given adults are more mature and undergo so much change, could be that the leader shifts around.
This movie has some really great messages to it Sid(ice age): *No thanks, I choose life* Diago/Bing Bong: *I suggest you take the shortcut* But seriously, very wholesome
Personally I interpret a good chunk of what's going on with Riley as her having some form of depression. I personally identify a lot with what Riley goes through emotionally during the course of the movie. The scene where Riley is running away and the emotions are trying to gain back their control of the console but they can't is especially heart-wrenching, because I have felt emotionally the same way many times throughout my life. I loved getting your thoughts on the movie, and your analysis was top-notch as always!
Joy and Sadness got sucked in the tube after the other memories were cleared away. Fear however tried to get sucked out WHILE the memories were getting sucked out.
I was the same age as Riley is in the movie when it was released and in the same year, I moved to a new city, so I relate to Riley a lot. This movie is a pretty accurate depiction of how emotions can e after a big life change such as moving
Inside Out is favorite Pixar movie. Seen it so many times. I ugly cry every time Riley comes back home and breaks down while her parents hug her and she creates her first mixed-emotion core memory. I just love the portrayal of emotional complexity/maturity and the lesson that sad isn't bad. We need to feel our feelings and even sadness can be helpful. Beautiful.
About the whole idea of "having a simple concept and building on it with more complexity if you want to" idea, you could have it so that when Riley gets older, she could have an entire staff of characters in her head that each are responsible for more complex feelings and emotions, while the central emotional characters are heads of each department. So, you could have a character for ecstasy, elation, delight, . . . etc. all working for Joy under the happiness department. You could have a character for frustration, vexation, . . . etc. for workers under the anger department working under anger. You could have compulsion, mania, panic, trauma, paranoia, . . . etc. all working under fear in the fear department. And so on and so forth. One of the reasons I love it when stories have a workable concept central to the theme of it that can easily be built on for further complexity and richness is that it makes for great imagination fuel and exercises in creativity. It makes the story and its fandom richer and much harder to be boring or for one to get bored with it.
I just started thinking about it, Disgust is very much a part of fashion, aesthetic, and being a part of society and having an "in crowd." This is so interesting to me.
For me, there are two points in this movie where I inevitably start crying. The first being in the forgotten memories, with the happy memories fading away and then rewinding the sad memory. The second is when Riley breaks down with her parents and a she's both sad, but also a little bit happy. I also feel like this movie has the most perfect depiction of depression I have ever seen. Nevermind the forgetting to be happy, when Riley is in such a state of negativity that she is incapable of feeling anything, that is depression. As someone who has dealt with that, it's exactly like that. You go on autopilot, you're lost in your thoughts, even trying to get any emotion into your voice is a challenge. I hate to go down this dark road right now, but that example of an idea that you keep going with and you can't feel anything... that's exactly what happens with a lot of suicidal people. They regret the attempts on their life if they survive it, they wake up.
This is my favourite Pixar movie by far, and one of my favourites of all time. I literally cannot watch it without having a full breakdown afterwards, so it's usually my go to when I'm feeling particularly down or maybe homesick and need something to get the waterworks going. This film is so beautifully made, the premise is so original and the message that sadness is not only healthy but an integral part of our lives is so groundbreaking, especially since most movies and society at large press the constant happiness narrative that Joy buys into for most of the film. Pete Docter is such a genius, he deserves so much more recognition than he gets
The thing about using the tubes to send the memories up - maybe she thought that if the others touched them too, they would turn into their emotions, so she was the only one who could hold them.
I've watched it since it was released on the cinemas (in September of 2015), and it has not only impacted me, but also become the very new basis of my fantasy, which shows how this movie influenced my Entirety of my brain. However, as of recently, another Movie, Coraline, Is Starting to establish its own basis in my fantasy, which i mixed them together, but, the point is, that this movie is One of the Greatest animations and Movies I ever seen, Not As Much as Wall-e However, and it's plot is very unique and creative
The guy who came up with the concept did say that sadness is actually a very active emotion and the reason people look so tired is because sadness sucks the energy out of you. So the portrayal is of the result of sadness rather than what sadness actually looks like.
If you ask me, you could probably say that anger was the villain of the story, because with him controlling the consul, he was the reason why the islands were going down, so they should’ve probably restrained him from the consul until joy and sadness got back
Unfortunately you can in fact cry yourself awake.. it’s happened to me a couple times. Whether it’s a nightmare or regular dream if it’s a deep feeling it can cause your brain to react and wake you up even from crying
Joy was evil to me. Joy wasn’t letting her feel her emotions so kept them hidden with happiness. Joy hated sadness, she hated anger, she hated fear, disgust. She wouldn’t let her feel, Be herself. Her clothes fade from rainbow in the beginning to all black when she ran away. She was beginning to be depressed , joy wouldn’t let her true emotions come out. She kept trying to keep sadness away, it’s giving me toxic positivity
Same here cause Riley needs to feel other emotions besides happiness and feeling sadness and fear and anger is a good thing sometimes cause everyone can’t be happy forever and Joy was annoying.
Brought to you by Pixar starring Joy voiced by Amy Poehler as she handles Riley's happiness as she starts to grow up. Also featuring Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust. Riley's family is moving to San Francisco which offers a new set of children and adjustments for them. Can Joy keep Riley happy as she gets used to the new environment?
Ayy im early! Also this movie at first didn't mean much to me until recently. Riley missing her old life and wanting to just run away really speaks to me. I loved this movie and when Riley finally broke down it was such a beautiful moment watching her finally let out her feelings.
If you notice, Riley is non binary person. Let me explain. Her mom have all female emotions and her dad have all male emotions. Look at Riley. She's has both. Plus Riley is used as a girl/boy name. Is Disney trying to tell us something? lol

I don't know because I just realized that but maybe it's a case of putting some ambiguity or neutrality about her. Even her name is kinda neutral. Well since masculinity and femininity are social constructs, it makes sense that Riley wouldn't be as particular toward one or the other because she's still too young to shun particular qualities of one due to conditioning. Edit: Or she could be nonbinary (where you feel both feminine and masculine and/or neither because your own identity goes beyond the confines of our concept of gender).

Of course Bing Bong would read “Danger” wrong. He was made when Riley was a little kid, and possibly couldn’t read, so he can’t read either :D
That's so sad/cute 🥺

I’ve always wondered why they didn’t send the core memories to HQ like the triple dent gum.
