Honestly, the most unrealistic thing about this movie is Zeus and Hera being good people and parents
@@summerrose8110 this
@@summerrose8110 he/she means that they agree.
True. But in a kids movie you can't have one person be an adulterer and another be pure murderous evil and still be the main character's parents.
Yeah the directors definitely didn't want to risk in when their passion project Treasure Planet was on the line
@@artloveranimation and treasure planet was worth it
I can’t believe that Disney made Zeus the good guy and Hades evil and meanwhile it’s the opposite
I know right.
@@summerrose8110 probably
@@summerrose8110
They definitely knew, but when you’re marketing to kids, the Zeus=God, Hades=Satan comparisons are easier for the intended audience to understand than the actual Greek myths.
Most adults today would struggle with the “king of the gods” being a pretty scummy dude, yet still treated with deference by gods and men alike, while the god of the underworld being a dour, but ultimately good guy.
Fun cause Zeus sucks and Hades kidnapped his wife but was actually kind
when the two "boys" where traped under the big rock and yell "Someone call IX-I-I" It is rome numbers... IX-I-I = 911
oh wow clever!
Damn, this movie is a part of my childhood, but I've never noticed that until now!
Right but this is supposed to be a Greek story but they told the Roman bastardisation of it but still call it Greek.
@@Sims4Tright, but I'm not writing the the script🤷♀️ I'm just telling what things mean😅
@@blade1547 I know.
phil's joke about number of words is actually pretty clever; "i am retired" in greek is actually 2 words lol
*gasp* Thanks for the fun fact!
Is it actually 2 words in ANCIENT Greek tho? Modern Greek is pretty different.
Movie unrealistic, Zeus isn't cheating and he's being a good husband
But it's disney
And hera is nice and posideon is nowhere to be found
And Hades is the bad guy
And Hades being evil and not the, like, one good husband of all the gods
Bruh its an animated movie. Most disney movies didnt stay faithful to the original story. And theres nothing realistic about greek mythology either. Its not based on a true story.
"Pegasus, you saw them...why didn't you stop them?" Because Pegasus was literally stuffed into a horn: it was right there in the film.
Also, in terms with the Scar part...Zazu did say that "He'd make a very handsome throw-rug."
Also, Pegasus was just a baby! What was he gonna do? :(

Hunchback is absolutely one of my faves
HUNCHBACK!! Yaaaaaaassssss
“morning in Paris the city awaits...” 🙌🏻love hunchback
“Someone call IXII!” That line gets me laughing all the time! I remember as a kid asking to my uncle about what that meant and he said 911. Didn’t get it when kid, laugh now as a grown up!
This movie will always be hilarious, especially if you know Greek mythology😂
Like Pegasus definitely wasn't Zeus' doing and Hercules was a demigod lmao. It's also very funny to see Zeus inviting Hades to the Olymp and Hera not hating Hercules XD
Or trying to kill his many mistresses he slept with 😂
The literal translation of "I am retired" in Greek is actually only two words. Είμαι συνταξιούχος
"Eímai syntaxioúchos"
Or εχω αφυπηρετισει which means i have retired and its also two words :)
👏👏👏
In the Greek version he says "I quit" which is one word in Greek so Hercules is counting the syllabus
oh... well I always just took that as a funny joke
@@entertainmentlife430 it will always be funny:)
This movie was amazing - even 25yrs later it holds up as a fantastic film.
I kinda wish Disney still made movies in this style tbh, especially the animations and music lol.
To be fair to Zeus, Hades is his big brother. Probably assumed he wouldn't do anything to hurt him or his family, even if he did have a bad attitude.
Tell that to Hera who litterally is his sister and wife. Or Poseidon and Appolo who have been changed in human for long period of time
There was always a Chorus in every Greek play. Here they turned it into a Gospel Choir. Best exposition form ever!
They showed the Labors of Hercules in the montage.
In Lion King, Zazu told Mufasa that Scar would make a great throw rug. So they basically turned him into one here.
What I get from this is that Hades foresaw the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
"Hail Hydra."
Fun fact: in Ancient Greek, "I am retired" is actually two words, I cannot remember which words, but it's two.
Εχω αφυπηρετησει
@@EvripidouM yeah that, thank you
"They keep playing Go The Distance, you already know that's gonna be the anthem of the movie." lmao no, that's I Won't Say I'm In Love and no one can tell me otherwise. One of the best Disney songs EVER.
I agree that ‘I won’t say I’m in love’ is probably the one of the best songs in the show (second only to the opening number) but from a thematic and musical analytic standpoint, ‘Go the Distance’ is the anthem (or central theme) of the movie
MID simping for Meg is gold 😂 Let's be real, who hasn't simped for Meg at least once? She is BAE, she can step on me
Meg is voiced by actress Susan Egan, who originated the role of Belle in the Broadway version of Beauty and the Beast. She was awesome, by the way.
I also liked her in the DCOM, Gotta Kick It Up.
The IX I I reference is because that’s the Roman Numerals for 911 😂 it kills me!
It really love Hercules and just the concept of Greek mythology as a whole
Same even though this movie was so incorrect when it comes to actual greek mythology I love it so much
@@parisewellington3664 i can tell you that as a greek im not bothered. Its s fun movie just dont use it to study for your test XD
This movie is so wrong in terms of greek mythology yet its still my favourite animated Disney movie
I agree about his feet being too big 9:34
@@erainmartinez8175 I agree and they're pretty big
Same though. They got so much wrong but it’s my favorite animated Disney movie
Movies in depth: “hOw Is ThIs A dIsNeY mOvIe?”

Old disney wasnt a pussy. Remember frolo in Hunchback of Notre Dame is singing about sexual lust and hellfire
@@EvripidouM To be fair, that was considered a lot even back then
I wish there were more films about Greek (/ Norse/ Egyptian) Mythology like this bcos it's fascinating, and there's so much to work with, i.e.
- the Gods & their powers
- the environments/ locations and visuals
- the stories
- the monsters
- the mythical creatures, etc
I can understand a lack of Norse, simply because Marvel gives everyone the wrong idea.
Kudos to the fact that Disney literally just left it at Hercules and Meg lived happily ever after ... because in actual mythology their story is SUPER dark: turns out he ended up killing Meg and the children that they had together by strangling them
Why did he do that?
@@tbakhalid4781 believe it or not Hera inflicted Hercules with madness which caused him to go crazy all because Hercules was a demigod (meaning Zeus had sex with a mortal woman and cheated on Hera)
@@jasminelawrence770 so Hercules just lost his mind for a while? It seems he really had dysfunctional family.
@@tbakhalid4781 Greek mythology is the literal definition of a dysfunctional family
@@tbakhalid4781 He was cursed to kill his family by Hera, and was so horrified he asked the oracle how to repent. The oracle, under the control of Hera, told Hercules he had to serve his cousin, the king. Thus starting his infamous twelve labors Hercules is known for. A few of the events shown/referenced in the movie are some of his twelve labors, the biggest being the battle with the Hydra.
Hades gets so misrepresented in modern media. Out of the big three (Hades, Poseidon, and Zeus. And that's in order from oldest to youngest), Hades was probably the most chill, second only to Hestia. Hades was faithful to his wife, loved his dog (which by the way, Cerberos roughly translates as "the spotted one", so Hades has a dog named Spot basically) and dig his job ruling over the afterlife.
When they were making this movie, Disney first asked my dad, GIL CLANCY, to voice Phil because my dad was a boxing trainer and announcer for CBS Boxing
Hercules is one of my favorites! Meg is my favorite Disney lady. ♥️
15:50 IX I I is 911 in roman numerals, it's amazing 😂
I kinda want him to watch spirit, I think he’d like it because it’s such a good movie
I love the scene where Pegasus blows the flame off of Hades head.
Me too lmao 😅
I’d love a live action of this, but only if Danny Devito plays Phil
Disney *is* doing a live action Hercules, and I completely agree! I don’t think they absolutely had to bring back James Earl Jones as Mufasa (even though I’m glad they did), but they 100% *have* to bring back Danny DeVito as Phil!
I think they are bringing Danny Devito.
@@ksanben There’s no confirmed casting yet; so far all that’s known is that it’s being produced by the Russo brothers, and I *think* they recently hired a writer for the script, but I’m not sure.
I think they will try to make it more serious, like Mulan, which means it will suck
@@EvripidouM yeah it’ll 100% tanking they take the comedic value out and try to make it something it’s not
While there isn’t a sequel, there is Hercules the animated series that shows Hercules as a teen learning to balance going to school and training as a young hero.
I’d definitely recommend checking it out as it fleshes out the period from when he was a baby to being a teen in the movie.
And the line “somebody call IXII” is a direct reference to the Roman numerals for 911.
The Road to El Dorado is so good! Elton John did the soundtrack.
Also, The Emperor’s New Groove is HILARIOUS!!
There's actually a sequel book called Go the Distance where Meg in order for her to become immortal and live with Hercules, she's tasked to go to the Underworld to bring back her ex who dumped her. It's so good!
ik this was 2 years ago, but it was her ex's wife that she had to go get
Fun fact when Pain and Panic (disguised as kid) said, Call IX I I, they're saying the Roman Numerals for "911."
Also Hades is by far my favorite Disney Villain. James Woods had so much fun playing the part, he agreed to reprise the role any time he ever gets the opportunity (and he does in Kingdom Hearts).
Jack Nicholson was originally set to play Hades, but due to his schedule and the studio unwilling to share merchandising purchases with the actor, ended up turning it down. But someone, recommended James Woods due to his ability to ad-lib his dialogue in films. And when they brought Woods in, boy did he improv a lot. Most of what you hear in his Hades role, was improvised, giving Hades the sleazy businessman vibe.
@@osmanyousif7849 That's neat. I did know that James Woods loved the role so much, he said he'd voice Hades again for any price, which is why he retained the role so many times for Kingdom Hearts.
Fun fact: Hades was merely a side character in the original story. The real villains were Zues and Hera.
And Heracles.
Um honey... you mean *HUNKULES!*
I was absolutely FLOORED when I read that you haven’t seen this movie! It’s so up your alley!
Let's hope they don't mess up the live action Hercules 🤞
My second fav Disney! Yey! Honestly Meg is best girl. Sassy and cynical, she's got so much charm! The gospel music is ace too. Such a fab film! X
I LOVE Hercules. . Meg is my favorite She is literally a QUEEN 👑💕❤️
18:09 “He would make a very handsome throw rug”
-Zazu
Zazu did say that Scar would make a very nice throw rug 😂😂
Congratulations on your new place!
I love the live action Scooby Doo! I'm so down for that!
If only this were Hercules' real story
Fun fact his gmgreek name is ACTUALKY Heracles while the Roman is Hercules
Lol the joke with Phil counting words is that their translation to Greek actually turns the phrase into two words.
You should watch Disney's The Black Cauldron. It's one of my favorites!
Yay finally someone who also likes that movie.
What has never occurred to me until right this moment after approximately 90 viewings in my 28 years of life... Why is Meg not a true hero? She gave her soul to save another and gave her life to save Hercules. She only did what she did (which was speak to the Herc because she was enslaved by "Hades."
This story is so far away from the actual mythology, that they could have made her a minor Goddess just cuz.
First off his name is Hercules, that's Roman. It's Heracles.
Second he was born a demigod, Zeus and a mortal woman
So Hera isn't his mother, and he was only named after her as an apology from Zeus, she still hated him and tried to kill him.
Next Heracles does eventually become a God after his 7 labors.
Hades is not the Christian Devil
The Underworld isn't hell.
And obviously the southern African American Gospel music.... is pure delight, but obviously not related to Greek culture.
So if all that can be wrong... Why can't Meg be a heroic Goddess?
But in the end, instead of saying, Hey y'all need to make this girl a hero to because she is brave, she saved my life and she sacrifices herself for the good of others.
Also this movie makes me appreciate how much a series like Percy Jackson could reference the myths and keep enough of the facts in there while also blending in the fiction.
There is a book series called Disney Twisted Tales and book 11 is called Go the Distance. Meg becoming a Greek God is exactly what happens. You should read it. You can read just that one. They are standalones
Didn't she betray Hercules first?
I just realized, the giant cyclops monster with the one eye is quite similar in build and appearance to the sea monster at the bottom of a deep sea trench that Spongebob and Patrick met in the episode where they sold Krabby Patties in a submarine. (It was the same episode that gave us the Spongebob meme were Plankton got into it with some Bikini Bottom townspeople and told an old lady "someone should put you in a box floatin' down the river, Grandma!")
11:47 Zeus: Don’t you think you might want to rephrase that Buddy boy
Meg was my first Disney crush. If I ever have a daughter, I want to call her Meg. (And hope Family Guy hasn't ruined it)
This is one of my favorite Disney movies. The Lion King used to be my ultimate favorite but then The Princess and the frog came out and that instantly became #1.
Hades can only be stopped by mal’s cousin
Damn that girl has got some top good tier genetics lmao even if her parents were evil
I love that Hades spoke up for the first time baby Hercules actually looked concerned as if he actually knew that something was wrong despite the fact that he was like an hour at the most.
Hell yes to the live action Scooby-Doo
18:07
Zazu: He'd make a handsome throw-rug.
20:32
Did nobody notice the "female Pegasus" take off her saddle?
As far as I know, in mythology Hades was just another god. Even though he ruled the underworld, that was just his job. So yes Zeus would not be opposed to him showing up. Though Zeus had many children with many women/animals so the birth of a child my not have been a big deal.
Hades and Zeus are actually brothers, so yeah he'd probably invite him.... that being said in actual Greek mythology Hercules, actually Heracles, is a demi-god, Zeus is his father, but his mother is a mortal woman, not Hera. So yeah, doubt there would be much of a celebration since as you said, Zeus was constantly banging anything he could fit his godly wang into and having random kids, lol
@@KS-xk2so Yep, the Greek gods were certainly more "hands on" than gods of other mythologies.
Plus considering Zeus was a literal god, I very much doubt a even a single "endeavor" did not result in a child.
@@hallofguns8174 Honestly, the Greek gods are a pretty realistic look at what gods would be like if humans achieved godhood. It's not sugarcoated, and there's absolutely no assumption that the gods are somehow morally better than people.
@@peterlewis2178 You make a good point there. While they do good for others sometimes, the Greek gods mostly seem to look after their own interests and move by their own emotions. Who will stop them after all, they are literal gods.
so, the original heracles married four times, his first wife was megara, but he sort of killed their children in a mad rage and some authors say he killed her too. he became immortal after his third wife, deianira, in a jealous fit, made the poisoned shirt of nessus which caused heracles great agony, prompting him to choose death.
Cause of Hera!!!
I love pain and panic, pain is always in pain and panic is always panicking LoL 🤣🤣🤣
19:41 Disney actually is bringing it to Broadway; they’re also reviving the musicals of Beauty and the Beast and The Jungle Book
I love Hercules although it’s actually pronounced Herakles but I’ll let it slide since this did come out in the 90s.
No it isn't
youre both right. hercules is his roman name, his greek name is herakles.
Erakles, without the H at the front
@@thearkof-noah the Greek name, which is still used today, is Erakles
Heracles is his Greek name, (named after Hera in a failed attempt to calm her wrath), Hercules is his Roman name. Oddly enough this movie uses all Greek names except for the main character.
Starring Hercules, a boy who was the product of a bet between Zeus and Hades in which Hercules is made mortal. However when Hades's subordinates tried to poison him the missed one thing. Hercules didn't drink the last drop so he still retained his power. While growing up in Thebes he gets trained by the satyr Phelopes voiced by Danny Devito. It is then when he becomes a champion
*Philoctetes
Though, it should be noted Philoctetes was actually the name of a hero in the Trojan War, supposedly the one to kill Paris. _Chiron_ typically trained heroes. That said, I don't think he actually trained Heracles. In fact, I think it was one of Heracles' poisoned arrows that did Chiron in.
Welcome to Chicago....its amazing
I just realized how similar the relationships and personalities of Zeus & Hades and Thor & Loki are XD
I will not STAND for this Pegasus SLANDER! >:( Nah but for real, I forgot how much I loved this movie

If we are talking soundtracks ( Tarzan hands down Phil Collins went HARD on that one 🔥) but all around I LOVE princess and the frog just everything about tiana is amazing! Plus it was about the only other movie with soul in the music 😂
Don't forget The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
"two words I AM RETIRED" when spoken in greek "Είμαι συνταξιούχος" is actually two words that's why its so funny :P haha
U should watch The Road to El Dorado next. Me and my sister rewatched it after many years and we had a blast.
Pegasus: "Hey, up yours! I was literally born on the same day!"
The biggest inaccuracy is Hades being the villain, in mythology he’s the nicest guy.
Also the fact that Hades frees the Titans is absurd, Cronus literally swallowed him when he was a baby!
Oh for heaven's sakes XD Pegasus was only a BABY HIMSELF when Hercules got kidnapped lol
14:19 fun fact: in the german translation instead of Nutmeg Hades calls her Chicken Meg Nugget
I wish we had this treatment
The woman that voices Meg also voices Rose Quartz in Steven Universe
Have you seen "Gargoyles"? It's a show, but the first episode/movie can be a stand-alone. Pretty good story!
Hades is my all-time favorite Disney Villain.
The fates aren't evil, they're just Doing their job, keeping track of mortals lifespans
It’s cool to rewatch it to feel content knowing where hercules ends up
The voice of Meg is the original Belle on broadway
Also, love the Tangled reference when they mentioned they had Dreams.
The fact that the whole story revolves around the concepts of fate and destiny makes the repeating joke of "if.. if is good" that much funnier to me (:
They used roman numerals for 911 and I love it "Call IX I I"
Hercules has the best songs in disney history
I have a love hate relationship with this movie because it’s really funny and entertaining! However it is so inaccurate to the Heracles myth! (And yes it’s supposed to be Heracles not Hercules)
