I think people forget that that is what it is - it isn't simply 'democracy', it's built on the foundation that one-person one-vote and the equality that that is supposed to engender, and then that the person thus voted would serve to represent those voters' interests, or suffer the wrath of the voter at the next election. Democracy without representation is not democracy - it's no-choice dressed up as choice. This core function of democracy has been completely undermined. The donator didn't donate MONEY, he donated marketable securities, which are not taxable until sold, so HE didn't owe any tax (in fact he probably got a nice tax write off for it, but I can't say for sure). The non-profit is not making a 'profit' technically, they just exchanged the securities for an equitable sum, and since they are a 501c3 they don't pay taxes on it. It's another loophole.

The company was donated to them. The donator didn't donate MONEY, he donated marketable securities, which are not taxable until sold, so HE didn't owe any tax (in fact he probably got a nice tax write off for it, but I can't say for sure). The non-profit is not making a 'profit' technically, they just exchanged the securities for an equitable sum, and since they are a 501c3 they don't pay taxes on it. It's another loophole.
The non profit must be registered under the church exempt tax status given this Leo guy is the head honcho of the Catholic Church.

There's a cap on donations from individuals directly to political candidates. But people can give unlimited amounts to political groups. Just not directly to a campaign.

Maybe establishing a nation which, at it's start, incorporated two novel ideas - a secular, classic democracy and a free- market economic system - was a noble effort, certainly worth trying. The thing about wealth that gets me is how utterly arbitrary it seems to be. The US seems to think that if you are a billionaire, you are kind of 'the best of us', some kind of genius or pinnacle of evolution or something. But when you look at these people - you see *some* very clever and worthy people, but so many others are rich because they know how to play the system, or they inherited billions and know how to not throw it away. Far from being the best, many of them are the straight up worst. They made billions of dollars trolling patents, or moving crypto currency around (?), or buying and selling shares through an algorithm. Or 'owning hundreds of houses', as if that is an actual job. They did nothing that improved the life of a single person, and quite possibly ruined a few (million) lives in the process (tobacco magnates, looking at you). A precious few seem to recognise that they are just people, (Jeff Bezos basically says if he hadn't made a certain investment, he would never have been a billionaire). In the US, where money is power, you are giving power to some of the least worthy in your country. Basically any nurse working in any hospital in your country is a more worthy human being than most of these billionaires by virtue of the fact that they are actually working to help others and build a better world, and in a political system that is fueled by money, that is the person who is being cut out of power.
