As someone who finally built their own crazy VW motor I really appreciate all the advice you’ve been handing out, really appreciate all you’ve been doing
We all got JCWhitney izd! I had it all too! Sand rails, bugs, square backs, in the '70s. Great times! Now, I'm older, I have a fully restored '64 sunroof bug. Fully stock and a sweet stock 40hp. I don't have to worry about overheating, or really anything. I run only 91 test, and VR1 high zinc, straight 30wt. This car is what my 1st car was. Reliable, unique, and most of all fun!!! Great info on the relief systems. Thank you!
I love watching your videos. I'm a truck driver and travel all over America but when I'm in Colorado I always look for Rusty or any of your other cars. I've had my Baja for 20 years ever since I was 5 and you give me a lot of motivation to work on it when I get home. Keep doing what you're doing and maybe I'll see you
Quick note. I recently rebuilt the Type-4 from my 914 and I had to line-bore the case, but it wasn't very much. On the plus side it was very easy to do with the right jig. Very illuminating video - thank you for the great explanation.
Glad to still be able to see your vids coming up. Diagnosing vids are always great, your experience on how to resolve things with the latest n greatest fixes are what benefit us VW guys most. Thanks Ez
Greetings from Finland! And thank you for yourinteresting videos. Dual relief valve cases were used also in 1300 cc engines (with both head models). Most of later model Beetles were here with1200 or 1300 engine. Only quite rare 1300S model and super Beetles 1302S and 1303S used 1600 engines.
Good history. We all evolve in some way shape or form. I tend to stay on the stock side of things when ever possible. I figure VW engineers knew way more than I'd ever know.
I know everyone is on a different budget which is why I like your posts. For me, I just bite the bullet and buy new auto Linea cases. Ready to rock, no machining needed. Strong and stout.
Informative as always, thank you. I have one of those 1600 single port engines; I did not believe it when the guy at the Vdub parts store told me. Other Vdub people told me it could not be because it was not a dual port.
Thanks EZ very informative. I sure appreciate all your video's. After i get my 1600 back together i will be tearing down the trans axle. That should be interesting, ha ha. My 1600 happens to be a dual relief case As 41. I am powder coating all the tin and external parts to spruce it up. I can even do a chrome powder coat which looks cool. I am reviewing all your transmission videos in my limited spare time. Thought at this age i would have more time, but have grand kids and full time job still so time on the dune buggy is precious. Please keep throwing out those videos when you can its my inspiration, Thanks
Thanks for sharing EZ I’ve enjoyed VW’s all my life I could set down and talk vw with you all day if I ever make it out to Colorado I would like to look you up
The dual-port heads came out in 1964 on the Type III motor. Also, you can use a dual-relief case in a 1500 setup. Just remember to enlarge the holes in the oil pump to match the holes in the case, and either use adapting grommets on the oil cooler or use a '70-only cooler if intending to keep the stock shroud.
That explains why my oil filter kept blowing the seal haha. I machined a groove on to the oil filter holder to that the seal could fit inside the groove and that fixed the seal blowing cold mornings for me. But now I think the problem was this oil relief after market things
Great info EZ. I gotta go check what I have. Thing is it started as a single port engine I think but it now has dual port 044 heads and I just added a dog house cooler.
Line boring is only needed for cranks that arent counterweighted (because since it wasn't counterweight it would vibrate when rotating causing an egg shaped whole where a circular one was)...if you put a counterweighted crank in a stock 1600cc beetle engine line boring won't be necessay anymore...I switched my crank and havent had to line bore since...65,000 miles later.
Nice video. VW tech just like old times. I find it interesting that the aluminum cases are quieter. I was strongly considering using one on my current 1600 build but re-used the mag case. Had a few case studs pull during assy but fixed them and am almost ready to fire it. I hope the Aluminum cases come down in prices a little.
@@bedlamite42 Just saw your comment. I do one cut on the lifter as Gene Berg prescribed when using a higher lift performance cam. I have tried to drill one case oil galley and it came out the side. Lucky it was a junk test case. I generally find that using the larger 30mm oil pump and external full flow oil system gives me good engine life and keeping the compression reasonable I do not have temperature problems.
Hey EZ for so long My computer never showed you posted any videos ,hmm . my noisy rocker arms on the new engine was-----the EMPI rocker screw kit , the motor has 6 ,000 on it and I had to keep tightening the screws , I started to think lifter shear . Last week I took one of the screws off and it is worn to the threads OK they have 800, 000 on them since I got them used. P.S. all that metal went in the engine x 8 = nice . good thing I got filter .
92 thick wall 2180 is totally different than back in the day. In the old days 2180 meant really hot. The aluminum case is always the way to go. But affordable? well now that good cases are almost gone. time to step it up.
Hey ez, Thankyou for responding, would you share an email address? To answer any questions, I’ve owned vws since high school, recently got a 65 ghia I’m currently working on, tranny questions, thanx
I've had it done locally but always have some kind of issue. Better to bite the bulit and get a new one if you plan to keep it. I'm thinking if you want an old one done right send it to FAT Performance "RIMCO" and if it's worth saving they will fix it up.
Hello from Colombia, in your experience, an aluminum block or an AS 41 magnesium block is necessary for a stroker engine? Did you ever see that the block bench bearings are oversized in only 800 km of use?
new aluminum high dome cases are much stronger than AS41 but about 24 pounew heavier. Remember that VW built all the type 4 engines from aluminum instead of AS41
I had a guy dupe me and told me he had an original '73 motor (with dual relief). My back is bad and so he helped put in in my car before I had a chance to look at it. Turns out it's a single relief. I am just going to build it 100% stock and so shouldn't be an issue... Just couldn't believe a guy would be that dishonest....
It became standard when they went with the dog house oil cooler and dual relief cases early 70's but you know how factory's are. Use up what you have and maybe throw out some early one's to get some feedback.
I'm not sure if you check your email. But if you do I left you an email on some question I had. I would greatly appreciate it if you would check it out. Also Thanks for the video. Gave me more info on my engine!
As someone who finally built their own crazy VW motor I really appreciate all the advice you’ve been handing out, really appreciate all you’ve been doing
Is the slotted pressure relieve valve better than the solid valve?

People like you are what make the Internet awesome! Thank you so much for your clear explanatory videos! YOU are a hero!
Quick note. I recently rebuilt the Type-4 from my 914 and I had to line-bore the case, but it wasn't very much. On the plus side it was very easy to do with the right jig. Very illuminating video - thank you for the great explanation.
I learn and re-learn something with every new video. Oh, and thank you for your humility! It’s refreshing Mano!!!
Glad to still be able to see your vids coming up.
Diagnosing vids are always great, your experience on how to resolve things with the latest n greatest fixes are what benefit us VW guys most. Thanks Ez
Thanks for the info... Greatly appreciated as I continue learning more about VW's
Glad to help
You're such a legend, you even know how to remove the bakelite fuel pump base without smashing the case, that's not ez!
Greetings from Finland! And thank you for yourinteresting videos.

Good to see you back again, was missing your videos. Hope you and family are well. Greetings from the UK. Abel
Good history. We all evolve in some way shape or form. I tend to stay on the stock side of things when ever possible. I figure VW engineers knew way more than I'd ever know.
Words of wisdom. I on the other hand always thought they were overbuilt and I could squeeze a little more out of it.
I have a 1600 SP motor 85.5 pistons. (NZ model 68 Beetle), so you are correct in stating they made 'em!
Thank You Sir! I appreciate your participation.
Great video sir! Thank you!
I know everyone is on a different budget which is why I like your posts.
For me, I just bite the bullet and buy new auto Linea cases. Ready to rock, no machining needed. Strong and stout.
Thanks ezgz for all the valuable information. I understand the relief a whole lot more.

Thanks for sharing EZ I’ve enjoyed VW’s all my life I could set down and talk vw with you all day if I ever make it out to Colorado I would like to look you up
Love your show EZGZ ,,,Cheers from Canada......Island Aircooled Restorations.
You are a great source of vw knowledge i learned a lot from your videos, thanks :)

Interesting!
I have always run straight 30 weight, for 35 years in my Beetles. I may switch to the Valvoline VR though
Always appreciate your knowledge boss. See you in next video
I've been looking for a video like this thanks.....very helpful. Now I can do it myself 🙂
EZGZ Knows His Shit about the VWs. Appreciate his knowledge from a lifelong VW guy.
Lol, ...."my daughter learn to drive in a VW and then she wrecked it!!!... didn´t we all at some time? thanks for sharing your knowledge!.
My daughter did something similar. :-(
Great info EZ. I gotta go check what I have. Thing is it started as a single port engine I think but it now has dual port 044 heads and I just added a dog house cooler.

Thanks for your information it helps alot
Happy to help
On a dual relief case, the first relief is there to bypass the oil cooler when the oil is cold and thick. The second one is to set the oil pressure.
yeah, just like I said in the vid. Thanks for the view and the input.
Have you ever tried Bob Hoovers HVX oil mods to reduce head temps?

EZ always tks..side note..brother worked in Antarctica.. bug motors use kerosene...due extreme temps..
Great video EZGZ
Super informative...thanks for posting!
Great content 👌.
Great explanation and history
What was the first year of the dual relief in a Standard Bug?
Hey EZ for so long My computer never showed you posted any videos ,hmm . my noisy rocker arms on the new engine was-----the EMPI rocker screw kit , the motor has 6 ,000 on it and I had to keep tightening the screws , I started to think lifter shear . Oils back then had better additives that worked better with solid lifters. You mentioned adding zinc which is the primary additive modern oils lack
The 1600 was designed to drive Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris, st Petersburg, Moscow, Stalingrad, and the way backwards without maintenance

Great info thanks fella
No problem 👍
Thank you
enjoyed the lessons. Thanks for the videos
You probably forgot more than I will ever learn. I appreciate the support
Oh yeah! eyetalian cars are nice!
Great Video! Lots of cool information that’s very helpful and informative. Thanks again for another awesome video.👍 BigW;-)
Thanks for the education!
Once you have a Vdub of any design it is hard to get any. It gets in your bloob.
Thanks for the information!
to Greg my friend I prefer dual relief cases with dual port intakes!
Me too but folks on a budget got to use what they have. Thanks for the support friend
so true, great channel and content.
i have messed with vws in my teens and still now at almost 50!
Great stuff, I’d like to come over and have a hands on tutorial, looks like my kinda garage, Thankyou ez
Sometimes I could sure use an extra pair of hands and eyes. You didn't happen to see my 13mm laying there?
Hey ez, Thankyou for responding, would you share an email address? To answer any questions, I’ve owned vws since high school, recently got a 65 ghia I’m currently working on, tranny questions, thanx
maybe a dumb observation, but doesn't the dual relief valv introduce a second failure point ?
Anything is possible but it has proved the test of time.
Welcome back Sir ... great video.
Do you send your blocks out for inspection and cutting or do you do it yourself ?
I've had it done locally but always have some kind of issue. Better to bite the bulit and get a new one if you plan to keep it. I'm thinking if you want an old one done right send it to FAT Performance "RIMCO" and if it's worth saving they will fix it up.
What are the first 2 letters on the dual relief case
I don't know but it is obvious when you look at the bottom of the case

Jeez... you coulda introduced us to Mary!
Mary has a diesel truck?
good info

My oil filter would blow up if I hit the throttle when cold on my 2276. It'sbeen sitting for 15 years. Time to get it back out.
Funny. Thing. About. Life. U. Allways. Know. Where. U. Are. Going. But. U. Never. Know. Where. You'll. End. Up
Don't worry my friend, for today is tomorrow that you worried about yesterday!
I really like deep thinkers.....
so what year did we change from single to dual?
It became standard when they went with the dog house oil cooler and dual relief cases early 70's but you know how factory's are. Use up what you have and maybe throw out some early one's to get some feedback.
Thanks
How can I email you I have a few questions you are very informative thx
Just ask in the comment section. Thx for watchin
Bro ... Your just plan , cool ...!!!!!!
Anything Dual is definately better than the single.....dual relief, dual ports, dual over head cams.....etc
Interesting observation,I agree!
👍
I'm not sure if you check your email. But if you do I left you an email on some question I had. I would greatly appreciate it if you would check it out. Also Thanks for the video. Gave me more info on my engine!
My comment gliched , it was ---- worn to threads . I got the old ones they are OK, -----
Sorry about the wrecked Toyota and sorry about the divorce. 😢
poop happens. hehehe
Single relief
Thank u.
You're welcome
