For those unaware: In the earliest version of 40k, the 2nd and 11th legions were the "create your legion" sub-factions for the space marines. One traitor and one loyalist. When GW scrapped that, lore was made up to explain their absence.

My father use to play a lot with Blood Marines. When ever one of his friends started to annoying him about something he will pull out a Horus picture an start to say: You know, right now you are looking a lot like him..
Much better than a Space Wolf fan just howling in your face unironically because you nuked all of his blood claws with a purposeful perils of the warp kamikaze Tzaangor shaman...
Back in the day when Space Marine had an active multiplayer I heard a story from a friend about a clan he talked to in a party chat. At some point he asked them what they’re called to which one said, “we are alpharius.” Then the whole party in unision echoed and answered as one, “we are all alpharius.” That story gives me a chuckle every time I think about it.
I like the implications that Alpharius wrote this book, implied some truths here and there, *somehow* made it into the Black Library, and left it there in the hopes someone would read it and get fucking pissed off. That's very much on brand.
Alpharius. Confirmed dead, probably. This is a lie. Or is it? Was he Omegon? Or was Alpharous Omegon to begin with? Who did Dorn face? Does the legion even know who they fight for? No. Because this is a lie
Each primarch has a special power Angron was an empath, magnus can shoot the second best mind bullets in the galaxy, sanguinius can fly, perturabo can take anything apart and put it back together, while Guilliman has the greatest power, the ability to use both hemispheres of his brain at the same time.
"Guilliman has the greatest power, the ability to use both hemispheres of his brain at the same time." Is that how Excel spreadsheets are described in the 41st millennium?
Salamanders are easily my favourite simply for the sheer contrast of the chapter whose favourite method of fighting is either brutally burning you to ashes with Flamers, Painfully melting you to slag with Melta guns or just violently bashing your head in with thunder hammers....are the faction who not only cherish innocent life, but also encourage their members to aid in civil and community service and generally are just big (if extremely freaky looking) teddy bears
The emperor once called Vulcan his greatest creation because Vulcan's defining trait is his humanity. It's worth remembering that beneath it all, the emperor does actually treasure humanity more than anything else.
"Horus sabatoged your toaster" I find the idea of Horus being so petty he snuck into a regular marine's living quarters and sabatoged their toaster hilarious.
I love how the Salamanders, The ones who use flamethrowers, A weapon that is commonly attributed to maniacs, Psychopaths and those with little to no care for life in general. Are probably the legion that have the *MOST* compassion for those around them and the most well adjusted.
"Why do I still live? What more do you want from me? I gave everything I had to you, to them. Look what they've made of our dream. This bloated, rotting carcass of an empire is driven not by reason and hope but by fear, hate and ignorance. Better that we had all burned in the fires of Horus' ambition than live to see this. We failed, Father. You failed your sons and we in turn failed you. And now, to compound our arrogance and vainglory, we have failed all of them too. Did Horus not say you sought godhood? He built his rebellion on that claim. Oh, how he would gloat and laugh at the state of the Imperium now.” - Roboute Guilliman, upon learning about the state of the Imperium after being in suspended animation for ten thousand years.
My favourite fact about the World Eaters is that in one book, a dead Marine is spotted with white and blue colours after some heavy rainfall, in a huge pool of blood. Only when they get closer is a character able to identify the World-Eaters emblem on his pauldron. They aren't _wearing_ red...they're just that bathed in blood by now.
The thing I find hilarious about the Salamanders, and the reason they're my personal favorite. Aside from the fire motif, is the irony that in a world full of "knights" that are some of the worst examples of heartless monsters and savage beasts, the "dragons" are the ones who show genuine compassion across the board.
Watched this video on the subway, guy next to me nudges me, asks "Who's your favourite?" "Orks." He stared at me, "That's not part of the Imperium" he said. "I hate humies" I replied. He stared right into my eyes and muttered "Heresy..." and we both chuckled. Fun encounter
I think it'd be epic if the alpha legion revealed themselves to have been loyal the entire time as Abaddon approaches the throne room, and it turns out his entire warband has been replaced by people who call themselves alpharius
i think Abaddon is supposed to be dead by the end of 9th edition, Gothic Armada 2 imperial campaign has him dying, any book source to confirm or deny this? His time should come anyways
The current theory is that 1/4th of Alpha Legion are loyal, 1/4th are heretics, 1/4th are loyal but are secretly double agent heretics, 1/4 are heretics but are secretly double agent loyalists, and none of them know what anybody else's allegiances truly are.
One thing about the Night lord you forgot to mention. They had the HIGHEST compliance rate among planets vs any other legion. If a planet heard that the Night Lords were coming. They surrendered before the invasion happened. THIS HAS TO BE MENTIONED SINCE YOU ARE A FAN!!!
The White Scars are a forgotten legion because Citadels’s white paints are chalky, don’t thin well, and brutal to put on with a brush. Only Vallejo customers and airbrush owners have White Scar armies.
@@Zeromusicmm it varies, lots of batches are just awful. vallejo whites are on average more consistently decent but its not reliable enough to be worth the gamble imo. the only reliable white I've found are actual artist heavy body whites or inks where they're absurdly pigmented like those from Golden or Liquitex. in fact, a lot of 'professional'' artist acrylics can be cheaper and better than miniature paints. for instance, Golden's Titan Buff is practically the same colour as Wraithbone but significantly cheaper and the hi-flow version can be poured straight into your airbrush.
I agree; terror is moreso about inducing feelings/effects of dread and horror, while fear invokes a sense of awe or veneration..... ....nothing is venerable or awe-inspiring about the Night Lords (aside from how cool they look if you love Gothic/Slavic/bat stuff).
Fun fact, the Space Wolves are also cool with humans like the Salamanders, the only 2 chapters that directly mention helping people. The space vikings have a soft side. Funny that two of the most intense legions are the kindest.
Hard disagree. The dogs don't value _humans_ , they value the _worthy_ . Hence their famous stand against the post-war armagedon purges. Because denying worth in others, means their *own* could denied. Their sagas, discarded. Their honor, made obsolete. And *that* is the heresy they can't condone.
@@davidgomes4408 I would agree, but Logan Grimnar not only defends the guardsmen on Armageddon, but also the living civilians who hadn't yet been tainted. There's definitely a sympathy for humanity there, more than just a tie based on honor or ability.
@@Mr_Catastr0phe let me put it this way: consider where they come from. Look back on Fenris's human culture. There is no room for empathy or altruism. It is accepted that life is hard, and that the weak dying gruesomely is natural. The *one* thing worth preserving is "honor" and "kinship". The latter, being a mere extension of the former, should not be confused with empathy. The dogs never cut ties with that life philosophy. And it is wholly incompatible with any form of respect for sanctity of life such as the one you describe. In my opinion, anyway.
"The Night Lords, single word: Fear" ... No, fear is what you feel when you walk around at night with the lights off. Dread is when you hear footsteps crunching wet bone behind you, when you hear chainswords spinning up. _Terror is when you realize they're gonna make it last._
And horror. They display their slaughter proudly like an artistic piece. And make sure you are looking at tge pulsating gore, even if is your own guts. And even if they have to cut your eyelids.
Indeed. All Space Marines have an organ that converts harmful radiation into excess melanin (similar to how natural Melanin is created using radiation from sunlight), which causes Space Marines to "tan" in high-radioactive areas. The Salamanders have a genetic flaw which causes this organ to malfunction and never turn off, so they just continually build up the melanin over time until their skin is a charcoal black (although it seems salamnder successor chapters, being primaris, don't have this issue as much thanks to Kawl "tinkering" a bit, similar to how he stabilized Space Wolves geneseed). Nocturne being an extremely high-radiation world (the locals even had a similar genetic defect they evolved over millenium to be able to survive on the deathworld) speeds the proces up drastically (although most Salamander recruits come from nocturne anyways). Ironically the Raven Guard have the OPPOSITE problem, their organ functions too well, to the point it drains all melanin from their system, leaving them with the extremely pale, deathly skin.
I have always believed chapters have different attitudes about civilians based on how they interpret the order to 'safeguard the imperium' A chapter may assume that means to safeguard it's lore and relics, preserve its technology, fortify it's territory, remove the corruption of it's enemies etc. The salamanders are the kindest because they believe it is the imperium OF MAN- and so safeguarding the imperium is to safeguard the emperor's subjects.
During the Horus Heresy, there was a rebellious planet known as Istvaan III. At this point, Horus was fully turned traitor, along with his brothers, but the plan hadn’t gone into motion yet. There were also several Astartes among the soon to be traitor legions that were appalled by the proposal, and showed their disapproval of potentially betraying the Emperor. So when the Luna Wolves/Sons of Horus, Death Guard, Emperor’s Children, and World Eaters landed to conquer the planet, the Traitors opened fire on their Loyalist brothers, and the first battle of the Horus Heresy had begun. However, the battle was short lived. When he saw he couldn’t take care of the Loyalists quickly enough, Horus ordered the virus bombing of the planet, annihilating all ground forces on the ground, both Traitor and Loyalist. Nathaniel Garro, battle-captain of the Death Guard’s 7th Great Company, managed to escape the massacre aboard the frigate Einstein alongside 70 of his Loyalist brothers, who would become known as, funnily enough, The Seventy. They retreated to Terra to warn the Emperor that Horus had turned Traitor. Without his escape, the Heresy may have gone unnoticed for who knows how long, and the Imperium would’ve been caught completely off guard. When he got to the Sol system, he was brought to Luna(the moon) to see if he was truthful or not. When it was confirmed he was, Malcador the Sigilite, the most power unaugmented human psyker to ever exist and advisor to the Emperor, summoned him and several other members of The Seventy. With other marines, they would become the founding members of the Grey Knights, a secret Inquisitorial group of all-psyker Astartes that specialize in the battle against daemons and Chaos. Edit: I typed this out before reading the first trilogy. Apologies for any slight differences like the exact timeline of the virus bombing. People in the replies have pointed them out.
My one nitpick is that the Virus Bombing happened before the land battle against the remaining loyalist forces. Someone got the word down to the Loyalist forces before the Shells were launched (can’t remember who) allowing for some to take shelter and provide a proper defense against the Tractors.
little nitpick by me: Horus "picked" marines personally from every chapter which seemed "loyal" and were sent for attack on Istvaan III (people not part of the "Lodges" mostly.) Then the bombings happened, but many survived thanks to Saul Tarvitz warning them (He should have originally gone to Istvaan but The venerable ancient dreadnought Rylanor switched with him since he suspected something) You are very correct about the Seventy and not at the same time. They were founding yes. But the original "grey Knights" would be the Space marines from ALL legions (yes also traitor) which Nathaniel Garro (Now Knight Errant, no longer Deathguard) found and brought to command of Malcador the Sigillite (first was tylos Rubio. "Rank" Codicia of the Ultramarines). Most "found" were Psykers though.
For those wondering about the 2nd and 11th legions, we know very little about them, and for what we can only assume is good reason. Apparently, what they did was so absolutely bad and a danger to the Imperium, they were put down without mercy, and all mention and memory of their existence was thoroughly erased from the galaxy. Even the primarchs themselves mention them briefly and extraordinarily rarely in hushed whispers. The Emperor even had Malcador the Sigilite, the founder of the Inquisition and the most powerful human psyker in the galaxy, wipe their minds of what exactly happened to the two legions and their primarchs. However, there was one who was allowed to remember, only for a moment. When the Horus Heresy was in full swing and the Imperial Fists were preparing for the largest siege in history, surveyors of the surrounding area stumbled across the rooms of the two lost primarchs, which were moved from the Imperial Palace into the maze of towering spires that is Terra, and were instantly killed by the psychic wards surrounding them. Rogal Dorn confronted Malcador about still keeping secrets from him, but Malcador reveals Dorn wanted it that way. He just doesn’t remember. He even was in favor of letting the marines of the chapters spared, their minds wiped, sent to serve elsewhere since they were too great a resource. Malcador reveals it was Guilliman and Dorn himself who devised the plan to erase the memories of the primarchs. But Malcador lets him remember, if only for an instant, what happened and why. When the moment passes, Rogal obviously doesn’t remember. And yet, the feeling of the memory stays with him. “There was still much that the psyker had said and done which the Imperial Fist did not accept, and although Malcador had professed to have been truthful with him, Dorn had doubts that would never ebb. But not in this matter. In this, he was certain. The lost were gone, and it was well that they were. The grand misfortunes that befell them crumbled in Dorn's mind, but they left behind certainty. What came to pass could overshadow everything. Dorn knew that now. 'The raw, hateful truth is clear to me. If they were here with us now…This war would already have been lost.'” TL;DR The legions and their primarchs did things so unbelievably terrible, they were put down, and all memory of them was scrubbed from record, including the psychic mind wiping of the primarchs themselves.
I have a feeling that the scene basically played out like >dorn finds weird stuff >dorn asks malcador >they stare at each other for 5 seconds >Dorn says "Oh word?" >Malc nods and rewipes dorns mind
The issue I have with this is that I can't imagine what they could've done that's more dark and twisted than giving yourself to Chaos. And if something like that exists, it would change the face of the entire setting.
In a recent interview Ricky Priestly (one of, if not THE, original writers of 40k for GW) said that his original idea behind the two lost legions - which GW has not kept - was that they indeed had committed some horrid atrocity; however their erasure from history was not a punishment but a reward - as so not to exist in a state of tarnished reputation like the traitor legions currently do. Priestly wrote the legions with the intention of them and their primarchs having redeemed themselves somehow, and were destroyed either as a mercy killing or a result of self sacrifice. Super interesting for theory crafting, but Priestley’s admission creates more questions than it answered. Still cool though!
Oh jesus thx for the explanation because when bricks got to it but not mention them I was upset because I wanted to know. But the fact these two legions and primarchs did something even worst then the Horus heresy has got to be possibly a big game over for the entire universe.
Don't remember where I heard this but I thought the two were originally blank slates so players could make up their own legions, but GW decided against that so they went with "erased from history" instead.
sad fact about Angron: Before he got the nails he had a very good friend and was forced to kill him. And Every primarch is said to have a unique ability and Angron's was empathy. it is said he could heal thoose He touched and was a Decent Kind man and leader. After he got the nails he was doing a rebellion with the other slavers to free them all but he got kidnapped by his Father and his father didnt want to help him so angron lost all his friends on the planet.
I like the head cannon that angron died during the final battle of the rebellion and the big E resurrected him alone. And rather than angron knowing he failed him men, the Emperor would rather have angron hate him for "saving" him alone.
Big fan of the fact that, out of all the incredibly powerful demigods the Emperor creator, with powers ranging from precognition to prodigious sword skills to making the literal laws of reality curl up and cry, the one to survive while remaining loyal to the Imperium, the one to lead it all, has the empire maintaining power of Excel Spreadsheets. Can you imagine Guiliman in his Primarch armour, shining like an angel, sits down on a desk with a (giant) cup of coffee and just starts hammering keyboards on tax returns. This is why I like him, he's so boring that it becomes adorable
It's one of the best/worst bits of writing. If _anyone_ has the skills to unclusterfuck the Imperium, it's the one that can intuitively understand and untangle the logistics that are involved. As the saying goes "No army marches on an empty stomach.". The downside is that if he really is the Primarch of Bureaucracy and Administration like he's supposed to be, there goes the setting because that will make the Imperium be able to go on a proper crusade (and the only thing that stopped that was Horus and Big E's ego).

Fun fact about the hazard stripes all over the Iron Warriors, while most of them are there for what you think and signal hazards but a lot of them are just a kinda black joke because they think it’s funny your getting obliterated by something covered in hazard warnings
Some things that I'd like to be mentioned, but uderstand why they weren't: 1. The reason why Perturabo was so bitter was that he was essentially the Imperium's janitor during its expansion. Iron Warriors were given the worst tasks: heavy sieges, garrison duty, pacifications, all those thankless but necessary jobs. And they got zero respect for it. They were doing stuff other legions didn't want to do and did so flawlessly, only to be never thanked. Also, it's heavily hinted that Perturabo's true calling was architecture (and he was damn good at it) and he only wanted to be a builder, while he was saddled with grindest and most destructive warfare, only for Rogal Dorn (who was about as good in the gruntwork and architecture, but much more respected) to be given the task of building the Imperial Palace. Most other Primarchs disliked Perturabo (truth be told, he was quite moody and bitter after all that happened to him) and Horus was pretty much his only friend. Which was the other big reason for their betreyal. 2. Konrad Curze has a lot more to him than terror and warped moral core. When he landed on Nostromo, it was a criminal hellhole. After he grew up, he tried to clean this place up, which he did by killing most of crime lords and letting the rest know that they would behave OR ELSE. Then he was called by the Emperor to fight for Imperium. So he went. And when he came back, Nostromo was a criminal hellhole again, the surviving crime lords rebuilding their power without the boogeyman. So he snapped and murdered all of them, no exception. He also was known to have visions of the future and the terrible rotten corpse of a state that the Imperium would become. So he went even more mad. The story goes that when Imperial assasins found him after Horus Heresy, he told them to just get on with it and lterally allowed them to kill him. So big yikes. 3. Alpha Legion is... complicated. And that's why everybody loves them. They're so secretive and so good at espionage that even their own lore is considered to be partially manipulated by them. How much, no one knows. They're also not exactly heretical, as they've been seen fighting for both sides. The current fan consensus is that 1/4 of them is traitor and occasionally spy on Imperium, 1/4 is loyal and occasionally spy for Chaos, 1/4 is traitor but is really a deep-cover loyalist cell and 1/4 is loyal but is really a deep-cover traitor cell. The funny thing is no one knows which one is which, not even Alpha Legionnaries themselves. They're also masters at redundancy, every single marine trained in normal fighting, heavy weapon fighting, light weapon fighting, spying, scouting and commanding. In an Alpha Legion warband, every marine can do anything. That all together means that their tactics and strategies are a shell game within shell game within shell game, with multiple levels of secret plans feeding off each other, with long term goals so inscrutable that probably most of the legion don't know them. They're playing the "I know they know I know they know I know..." game on the level that is to Imperial counterespionage like 4d chess is to tic tac toe. What's not to love?
AU Big E: Dorn. I need you to help me go through family photos for the photo album, there'll be snacks. Perturabo, I need you to clean the bathrooms again. Leman ate too much meat again and has been clogging every toilet in the palace. There's no plunger or cleaning supplies so get creative.
For those wondering about the lost legions: The emperor of mankind sanctioned them for an unknown reason, and decreed the edict of obliteration, which saw all traces of them aside from a rare few erased from history. At the very least Rogal Dorn and Rouboute Guilleman had their memories of the primarchs altered by malcador. It’s highly likely that all primarchs who came into contact with the lost legions had their memories altered in some way, whether they know about it or not. This makes all clues about their fate untrustworthy at best. As for what the primarchs did, it’s never explicitly mentioned but in order for the emperor to delete a primarch, whatever they did had to be HUGE, but not necessarily bad. If the lost legions truly were as dangerous as some theorize them to be, it would make more sense to delete all memory of them, so their existence, or lack thereof cannot sow doubt in the emperor. The fact that despite conflicting hints at what happened to the primarchs, all accounts share one thing in common: The lost primarchs were missed and their loss seen as tragic by all the other primarchs that reference them. Horus even confronts malcadore about destroying their statues. This leads me to believe that the fate of the lost primarchs was closer to a tragedy than a betrayal. Perhaps it wasn’t an action taken by the primarchs that lead to their sanction. Maybe the erasure of the lost primarchs was some measure of forgiveness or kindness. If they were to be remembered, it would only be in shame. If they were to be forgotten, so too is their failure. One theory suggests that one of the primarchs suffered a geneseed flaw that could not be tolerated. We know that each primarch has a unique fate so it’s likely this isn’t the case for both primarchs. Here’s my personal theories. 11th primarch- The 11th primarch has a severe geneseed flaw and is kept in the vaults below the imperial palace. This is hinted at in a custode codex, with a being known as “subject 11” is imprisoned in the dark cells. 2nd primarch- The second primarch had a more tragic fate than his brother, and likely committed suicide. While I’d never Shame someone for it, in the 40k universe, a primarch taking their own life is perhaps one of the most shameful things they could do, and would in fact threaten the stability of the crusade as malcadore told Horus before the force choked the shit out of him. Lmk y’all’s theories I wanna hear em
This reminds me of the 40k fanfic "Imperium Ascendant", where God E sends a psychic message to his past self, after chaos tried killing/corrupting the still gestating primarchs, only to be stopped by the legion of the damned. The aforementioned message boils down to: "Hello past me! Half of our sons betrayed us, and humanity worships me. Learn from my mistakes, lest you'll end up like me. Here are the profiles of every primarch from my timeline." These profiles included that of the 2nd and 11th primarchs. The 2nd ended upon a planet where humans coexisted with xenos. This lead to him becoming a good diplomat, but also guillible, which was less than favourable during the Rangdan Xenocide. The 11th, one the other hand, got stranded on a daemon-infested space hulk. This made him immune to chaos (iirc) at the expense of his sanity. During the great crusade, him and his sons became cannibalistic monsters, which lead to their execution.
Iirc, the main Writer at that time confirmed that the Obliteration Edict was much like the ancient Roman ones, a gift given after having avenged a failure, given as a way so that their shame would not be remembered

"When contacted by Legion commanders protesting the careless destruction, the Iron Warriors captains replied with laughter that bordered on betrayal. ‘We are all bleeding today,’ an Iron Warriors captain voxed back to Kor Phaeron. ‘Have faith, Word Bearer.’ The link went dead to the sound of chuckling." The Iron Warriors are my favorite space marine legion because, in my opinion, they're the only faction who really GET it. And they got it right from the beginning. All the legions, Loyalist and Traitor, went into the Horus Heresy thinking that their war was going to be glorious, and their enemies would be washed away by their might. Not the Iron Warriors. They knew that the war would bring death and ruin to everyone and every thing, themselves included. And they were totally okay with that. They saw ten thousand years of war ahead of them, and they laughed!
They don't get it either. If you want the best faction that truly understands the universe and what it is and how it should be...I present to thee, the Orks! The only ones having fun, know no depression, and are uncaring about philosophical questions.
Wait, is that thing about kor phaeron the origin of that meme about the iron warriors? The one that goes like this: "Stop bombing our own troops!", cried the Word Bearer. "Lol" said the iron warrior, "lmao."
I think the perfect explanation of the alpha legion is in a short story later in the Horus heresy where *spoiler* The alpha legion sends the alpha legion to attack their own spy installation to convince other parts of the alpha legion that it was attacked by a different legion. The campaign to attack the alpha legion base was lead by the primarch who, at the very end, when waiting on their shuttle out of the small exploding meteor, takes off their helmet and isn’t the primarch. The assault team dies during the mission to leave no evidence lead by a close friend of omegon who lied to the attacking squad about leaving alive. So even the leader of the squad lied to his own men as a promise to omegon so none would be able to say what happened there. That’s like 5 different double crosses. There is more to it. But go read it. If someone has the short story tell me. I can’t remember it but it’s great.
The Horus Heresy books have helped give a much more tragic view of the World Eaters and Angron. When their father was returned to them, the Warhounds were given a damaged individual that they didn't know how to treat. My favourite dialogue is when Kharn talks about his brothers accepting the butcher's nails onto themselves in the hope of being closer to their broken father. It didn't work..

Honestly, as an Iron Warriors collector... I really appreciate the support Perturabo gets in these comments. He's the unwanted son, with nothing spectacular going for him... except the fact that he's simply awsome at his job. He takes over planets. He sieges cities. Suppresses uprisings. There is nothing glorious in what he does. But he does it. And he does it well.
I love how even Bricky's opinion on the guy is changing. In the Adeptus Ridiculous episode on him, he started saying he is quite unlikeable, by the second episode he sees some cool things, and by now he seems to think he is a likeable character. But yeah, Perty is great, the most human of the Primarchs for me.
He's kind of a whiny bitch who always blames everyone else though. Volunteers his legion for the shit jobs, then whines that they're getting the shit jobs and aren't appreciated. Complains about always suffering so many losses, keeps throwing men at walls without giving a shit about losses. Just gets fuckass mad whenever he's being called out on it, strangles his own sister when she does it. Guy could have been among the top 3, or at leas top 5, primarchs overall, if it wasn't for him being too far up his own ass and terrible at dealing with other people.
@@SamueL-td7fb Yeah, the one time he got his whims catered to by everyone on his side. And even then the Iron Warriors were the traitor legion with the largest amount of members remaining loyalist, mostly because even many Perty's own men were getting sick and tired of how he kept throwing them into walls to promote himself and basically never gave a shit about them except to make himself look better.
To me Perturabo is a cursed Primarch that got a really bad deal, IMO. In the beginning of his book, he has no understanding of anything. The obvious examples being what a sheep or sword are, but he has the inbuilt knowledge of how to utilize and create them. By the time you get to Perturabo's argument with his father he's a completely different person. As he mentions when asked why he doesn't build all these amazing buildings he's planned out, Perturabo replies with something along the lines of 'Why? I already know exactly how to make it and how it will be received.' Which to me says he's been corrupted by the Warp like Konrad. There is no better way to describe The Iron Warriors than “they are bitter incarnate, Perturabo and The Iron Warriors don’t serve the chaos gods because they like them! They serve them because FUCK YOU!” 🤣🤣 Peter Turbo ftw 🙌
I'm pretty sure the Raven Guard actually all have a bit of psychic power that makes everyone else's eyes just sort of glide over them. It doesn't work in a brightly lit room if they're in the center of it, but any kind of shadow or gloom just sort of takes them in and they become near unnoticeable. They also all have something like the Blood Angel's Black Rage, but instead it's either inconsolable depression or straight up disdain for every other chapter's tactics.
You missed that with Angron he was also the embodiment of the Emperor's Empathy so took on the pain of those around him. So he's easily the most tragic figure and understandably most fucked up from it.
@@titaniumwolf1123 XD funny but not quite. Each primarch was designed for a purpose and had traits and abilities to match. Perturabo was the siege master and understood anything he looked at so he could break it down. Corvus Corax was the infiltrator and could turn invisible. We're not *entirely* sure what Angron's original purpose was, but we do know his ability was to take away the pain of others, and he hated fighting. Unfortunately, he was in a gladiator pit so they put the butcher's nails in his brain to force him to fight, and the rest is history. Makes me think that without the nails, Angron and Vulkan would have gotten along famously.
Angron was dealt a bad hand that he played as best he could until Emps fucked him over, and then Angron stopped caring about the game entirely. To say that he did nothing wrong is arguably not true, but those butchers nails really made is pretty much impossible for anyone to actually help him, and that just might include himself

When I think of the Ravenguard I don’t think of a faction that’s stealthy. I think of a faction that’s patient. The ability to hide their presence until the right time comes or when you do see them it will be too late
to my understanding they're stealthy. Using techniques to make the noise of their army incredibly muffled, they're also very anti-social distancing themselves from others even in combat missions.
Raven Guard: You can't see them and you don't know they're here. Alpha Legion: You can see them but you don't know they're here. Night Lords: You can't see them but they made sure you know they're here.
Oml please make more of these, this was one of the most entertaining 40k lore video I have ever watched and was actually useful to understand the lore.
I have a head canon where the 2nd and 11th legion were lead by Alpharius and Omegon(they used different names then). The destruction of those two legions was a work - all planned by the Emperor - as a warning to the the other legions. After the "destruction" of the two legions the Emperor "finds Alpharius" and the 20th legion is formed.
I know people joke on ultramarine, but what was appealing for me was the Roma flavor and the story of how the primarch is trying to salvage the dream of his father, also I do like the jack of all trade style, plus some of the characters are kinda interesting, might read novels about them
or imagine the Death Korps and the Imperial Fists together, both are immovable defenders who stand their ground even if its at the risk of their own lives.
I loved Bricky's comment about the viewer not having a dad. This was a really cool reference to my father passing away from lung cancer in November 2013 when I was 12.
Salamanders are probably my favorite because flames are cool but also I like the motif of them basically being gentle giants and are genuinely nice marines
I think it's important to remember though that the Salamanders are only nice to Imperial civilians. They can and have slaughtered non-imperial civilians. That puts them leagues ahead of most other chapters, but even the golden boys of the Imperium have plenty of skeletons in their closet.
Lamenters should be big for you too. They will sacrifice hundreds of battle brothers to save a civilian town if need be. Do you know why? Because the Emperor didn't stutter when he said that the Marines would be his Empire's shield.
As I continue to learn more about each legion, revisiting this video becomes increasingly amusing. It's remarkable how accurately and insightfully Bricky was able to capture the essence of each legion in a way that's both knowledgeable and quirky. The depth of understanding and humor in the content becomes more apparent and funny.
I feel like the best way to describe the Night Lords is the the legion went traitor while the primarch ultimately didn't. When he saw what had happened and he knew it had gone too far, he let himself be killed. There's a lot of nature vs nurture in the primarch's backgrounds, and I think Konrad is the most explicit.
Konrad’s ideals left his legion because he had no diplomatic tools in his arsenal aside from fear due to his nature… this does not allow him to lead a legion of super soldiers that “know no fear” very well. He lacked the ability to teach or nurture. And due to his own shattered psyche, he was unaware of the evil that was taking hold of his legion. Meanwhile his sons could never learn his ideals because his sons only respected him but could never learn. I agree with you about nature and nurture
@@JimGordon I believe that there was something binding together the earlier generations of the Night Lords more than just fear: a sense of justice. That might sound weird for the Night Lords, but given that Curze was a vigilante who succeeded in completely destroying the crime rate of his home planet, it's likely that his followers were just as zealous as him in that regard. They probably believed that all the horrible things they did in the name of the Emperor were still in the service of a higher cause. But of course, after Curze left his planet, without him there to keep crime down it shot back up again, so the later generations didn't have that sense of justice and it all fell apart from there.
"What do you mean they don't fight until they die because it's a lost battle and they would simply lose their men? That's Hershey! Unspeakable Hershey!"
Well the night lords don't follow the chaos gods because they know that the Chaos gods are a lie. they don't want to be the puppets of the Chaos gods :) so they just hide in a tiny corner of the galaxy and terrorize the poor civilian population.😐 so yeah they are cowards 😒

@@genctubay3239grey knights aren’t a space marine chapter. They are Kind of space marines but they are slightly stronger and more elite since they have the emperors gene seed rather than the primarch having it
Little fun fact about the White Scars. When Khan first took over the legion he demanded that each marine take up a hobby to perform during down time. Didnt matter what it was, just something to do so you dont get bored. Canonically, there are some white scars who have taken up things like knitting, crocheting, and needlepoint and genuinely enjoy them. Even poetry and song writing, most about Khan, the White Scars as a whole, or the Emporer.

A couple of notes that I was hoping to come up, but was surprised to see that they weren't stated more clearly: >The Death Guard did not turn to Nurgle willingly - like most of the God of Hopelessness' servants, they were trapped with his diseases and suffered in agony until they sold their souls to find solace. They are generally morose about the whole ordeal. Typhus sold them out. >The Alpha Legion is arguably not even a Space Marine Legion anymore. They don't just use cultists extensively - they integrate unaugmented humans into the legion's command structure, to the point that it is entirely possible for a human legionnaire to outrank (and relay orders to) a space marine legionairre.
Currently halfway through the third nightlords book, I think the most important thing about them is emphasizing that they were encouraged to act the way they do during the Crusades where they would be sent to non-compliant worlds and those planets would just immediately surrender because they heard the nightlords are coming. Really shows that they're a monster the Imperium created.
The dark angels back in their legion had 6 different subsects, dubbed the Hexagrammaton, which included the: Deathwing (terminators and shock assault) Ravenwing (Fast response strikes/ zoomies) Stormwing (Fortified warfare and breaching manoeuvres) Firewing (Sowing chaos in enemie command, Alpha Legion 0.5) Ironwing (Mechanized warfare/ robots and bigass tanks) And my objective favourite, the Dreadwing (bio/chemical warfare/ really wanting to get shit killed as quick as possible idc about morality and ethics) Note how they had very similar functions to later legions? this is due to the fact the first legion was the emperor's prototype legion and were created before the great crusade was launched and the emperor deemed it necessary to create legions based upon each primarchs genome.
@@LtCWest nah i just know so little about the fine parts of warhammer lore that the things that are popularized about it are my only things to relate them to

In the earliest version of 40k, the 2nd and 11th legions were the "create your legion" sub-factions for the space marines. One traitor and one loyalist. When GW scrapped that, lore was made up to explain their absence.
Current stuff that we know about them:
II - Doesn't laugh that much, silent, has enough hubris that Fulgrim is 'pot call kettle black'. Sounds like a swell guy /s (Fulgrm's Primarch book). Stuff is also pointing to him getting his ass fucked in Rangdan (Horus Heresy VII- Forgeworld book), so many [REDACTED] it was hilarous.
XI - Nice enough that everyone was sad when he kicked the bucket, notably Lorgar and Corgboi (The First Heretic. Nothing blatant like II, but it's pointing there). Also seems to be the one who got purged due to mutation shit, which is why Sangui-tan was afraid of the IX getting purged in Fear to Thread. No direct evidence, but 2+2 since that fear had to come from somewhere and II got roflcopterstomped by the Rangdan so.

Funfact: All Astartes can get as dark as the Salamanders to adapt to the radiation on battlefields. The Salamanders are just permanently as such.
Not all, Raven Guards organ responsible for this is broken

I have always believed chapters have different attitudes about civilians based on how they interpret the order to 'safeguard the imperium'
A chapter may assume that means to safeguard it's lore and relics, preserve its technology, fortify it's territory, remove the corruption of it's enemies etc.
@@americankid7782 damm, dont disrespect my man Saul Tarvitz like that
little nitpick by me:
Horus "picked" marines personally from every chapter which seemed "loyal" and were sent for attack on Istvaan III (people not part of the "Lodges" mostly.)
Then the bombings happened, but many survived thanks to Saul Tarvitz warning them (He should have originally gone to Istvaan but The venerable ancient dreadnought Rylanor switched with him since he suspected something)
You are very correct about the Seventy and not at the same time.
Ironic that Grey Knights seem to fight Nurglite Demons most of the time
There are only eight founding members of the Grey Knights drawn from any chapter (originally nine, but one refused the role).
If they were here with us now…This war would already have been lost.'”
TL;DR The legions and their primarchs did things so unbelievably terrible, they were put down, and all memory of them was scrubbed from record, including the psychic mind wiping of the primarchs themselves.
I have a feeling that the scene basically played out like
>dorn finds weird stuff
>dorn asks malcador
>they stare at each other for 5 seconds
>Dorn says "Oh word?"
>Malc nods and rewipes dorns mind

Some things that I'd like to be mentioned, but uderstand why they weren't:

Regarding perturabo, dont forget he could see the eye of terror ever since he was born and that traumatised him forever
11th primarch-
The 11th primarch has a severe geneseed flaw and is kept in the vaults below the imperial palace. This is hinted at in a custode codex, with a being known as “subject 11” is imprisoned in the dark cells.
2nd primarch-
The second primarch had a more tragic fate than his brother, and likely committed suicide.
@@garberasandor9699 I’m actually reading imperium ascendant again right now. It sucks that the creator isn’t updating it anymore

The Iron Warriors are my favorite space marine legion because, in my opinion, they're the only faction who really GET it.

I think the perfect explanation of the alpha legion is in a short story later in the Horus heresy where *spoiler*
The alpha legion sends the alpha legion to attack their own spy installation to convince other parts of the alpha legion that it was attacked by a different legion.

Plus if you know how everything you build will turn out and everyone's reactions, where's the enthusiasm to build it? Routine is monotonous and boring, especially if you're a Primarch who thrives on problem-solving.

The Alpha legion: We just sacrificed one of your squads by using our hidden man inside that squad to get our more hidden squads to all converge and attack that squad because that squad could have found out that our squads were about to become your squads and that would have led to you finding out half your legions are actually members of our legions because alpharious told us that your legions might decide to fight our squads because we might be traitors but probably are loyalist but most likey arent either and we probably serve some other purpose.

Your videos are so good. Your knowledge and explanation of the lore is incredibly in depth, but incredibly funny at the same time. It's an insane fantasy world, and to treat it as anything else would do it injustice.
As someone who has never played anything 40K and probably won't ever play 40K, it's still fascinating to watch and hear about the lore of the world. Very well done!
You forgot 90% of major death guards engagements are mortarian being a jobber then getting bodied into the warp while typhus has to salvage the battle as best as he can.
Makes sense since Mortarion doesn't actually want to be pro-Chaos and simply had to to save his sons' lives
That moment when Nurgle loves Typhus more than Mortarion
Dorn gave my favorite line about the Alpha Legion:
Where there is 10, there is 100
Where there is 100, there is 1,000
Where there is 1, there is legion.
They are, after all, Alpharius
Now, where you point that out: The Alpha Legion is a Legion. In every literal sense. ^^
Where there are few, there are many. Where there are many, they are few. Or maybe they are many as well. That’s the Alpha Legion. Or is it?
"My name is legion, for we are many"
“Oh yes of course I’m a loyalist. But only on Saturdays and Wednesdays…..and holidays” - Alpharius probably
Man you were right, that black templar video was very informative. thanks Bricky
I got baited so hard
The Alpha Legion has managed to convince the Imperium that they were totally eradicated three different times. When asked about it, an Alpha Legionnaire who would only identify himself as Alpharius said "it's just a prank bro"
I love how each legion is so uniquely different from one another, yet have enough similarities to know they are all space marines.
I love when he does these long-form vids about 40k. They're very informative and entertaining, and it's just so plain to see how passionate he is about the setting. Possibly best Bricky content.

Most Raven Guard don't have that- iirc it's called the sable blind. Very very very few have the power. But every Raven is naturally sneaky

You missed that with Angron he was also the embodiment of the Emperor's Empathy so took on the pain of those around him. So he's easily the most tragic figure and understandably most fucked up from it.
So he's the embodiment of.. non-existence?
@@titaniumwolf1123 XD funny but not quite. Each primarch was designed for a purpose and had traits and abilities to match. Perturabo was the siege master and understood anything he looked at so he could break it down. Corvus Corax was the infiltrator and could turn invisible.
We're not *entirely* sure what Angron's original purpose was, but we do know his ability was to take away the pain of others, and he hated fighting. Unfortunately, he was in a gladiator pit so they put the butcher's nails in his brain to force him to fight, and the rest is history. Makes me think that without the nails, Angron and Vulkan would have gotten along famously.
angron did nothing wrong
Angron was dealt a bad hand that he played as best he could until Emps fucked him over, and then Angron stopped caring about the game entirely. To say that he did nothing wrong is arguably not true, but those butchers nails really made is pretty much impossible for anyone to actually help him, and that just might include himself

Yup.
I mean they aren't even immune to stealth.
Their Chapter master got ass blasted by Tau.
Alpha Legion is here. Your MOC is one of my certifications.
to my understanding they're stealthy.
It's their specialisation like how USA has force recon... Patience is an important attribute for units like this.
That is actually extremely interesting!
"was a work" didn't expect wrestling lingo here lmao
@@drago939393 I thought saying that in kayfabe the 2nd and 11th were legitimate legions would be pushing it.

It's sad that the Iron Warriors went traitor because imagine them and the Death Korps fighting together .
I can't think of a better duo
Both legions when told to dig a hole:[muffled mask heavy breathing]
or imagine the Death Korps and the Imperial Fists together, both are immovable defenders who stand their ground even if its at the risk of their own lives.

A couple of notes that I was hoping to come up, but was surprised to see that they weren't stated more clearly:
>The Death Guard did not turn to Nurgle willingly - like most of the God of Hopelessness' servants, they were trapped with his diseases and suffered in agony until they sold their souls to find solace. They are generally morose about the whole ordeal. Typhus sold them out.
>The Alpha Legion is arguably not even a Space Marine Legion anymore. Currently halfway through the third nightlords book, I think the most important thing about them is emphasizing that they were encouraged to act the way they do during the Crusades where they would be sent to non-compliant worlds and those planets would just immediately surrender because they heard the nightlords are coming. The dark angels back in their legion had 6 different subsects, dubbed the Hexagrammaton, which included the:
Deathwing (terminators and shock assault)
Ravenwing (Fast response strikes/ zoomies)
Stormwing (Fortified warfare and breaching manoeuvres)
Firewing (Sowing chaos in enemie command, Alpha Legion 0.5)
Ironwing (Mechanized warfare/ robots and bigass tanks)
And my objective favourite, the Dreadwing (bio/chemical warfare/ really wanting to get shit killed as quick as possible idc about morality and ethics)
Note how they had very similar functions to later legions? this is due to the fact the first legion was the emperor's prototype legion and were created before the great crusade was launched and the emperor deemed it necessary to create legions based upon each primarchs genome.
