BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA MOVIE REVIEW | 31:12 - 34:27
Big Trouble In Little China Movie Description :
Kurt Russell plays hard-boiled truck driver Jack Burton, who gets caught in a bizarre conflict within, and underneath, San Francisco's Chinatown. An ancient Chinese prince and Chinatown crime lord has kidnapped a beautiful green-eyed woman, who is the fiancee to Jack's best friend. Jack must help his friend rescue the girl before the evil Lo Pan uses her to break the ancient curse that keeps him a fleshless and immortal spirit.
Big Trouble in Little China (also known as John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China) is a 1986 American fantasy martial arts action-comedy film directed by John Carpenter and starring Kurt Russell, Kim Cattrall, Dennis Dun and James Hong. The film tells the story of Jack Burton, who helps his friend Wang Chi rescue Wang's green-eyed fiancée from bandits in San Francisco's Chinatown. They go into the mysterious underworld beneath Chinatown, where they face an ancient sorcerer named David Lo Pan, who requires a woman with green eyes to marry him in order to release him from a centuries-old curse.
Although the original screenplay by first-time screenwriters Gary Goldman and David Z. Weinstein was envisioned as a Western set in the 1880s, screenwriter W. D. Richter was hired to rewrite the script extensively and modernize it. The studio hired Carpenter to direct the film and rushed Big Trouble in Little China into production so that it would be released before a similarly themed Eddie Murphy film, The Golden Child, which was slated to come out around the same time. The project fulfilled Carpenter's long-standing desire to make a martial arts film.
The film was a commercial failure, grossing $11.1 million in North America, below its estimated $19 to $25 million budget. It received mixed reviews that left Carpenter disillusioned with Hollywood and influenced his decision to return to independent filmmaking. It has since become a cult classic and has a 78% average rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a steady audience on home video.

I Did Some Research On This Movie After I Watched It And I Found Out That The Only Reason This Movie Was Made Was So That They Could Compete With "The Golden Child." They Rushed This Movie For It To Come Out Before "The Golden Child," That's Also Why I Kept Feeling Like Watching The Golden Child After This And I'm Guessing Why The Pacing Was So Fast... Oddly enough, this film was also not a hit. Like Banzai, this became a revered cult movie. Btw Buckaroo Banzai is another film like this.. a cult movie with a crazy good cast, crazy weird plot. Shooting the guys dead with his gun absolutely does count as killing someone, even though it is played for laughs. This is one of my favourite movies of all time. The set design, the action, the script, the casting, the costumes, everything is pretty much perfect. I don't even know how you would remake this movie. It's pretty much perfect for what it is.

When this movie came out in the theater, it was a huge flop because people didn’t know what to make of it. No one had ever seen a action hero basically be a fool, while the sidekick does all the work. This movie is brilliant as a comedy.

"How did they market this back in the 80's?"
Poorly. Despite greenlighting the script pretty much as it was shot, the studio didn't really understand it. They kind of pushed it as a pure action/adventure movie and not very enthusiastically. It bombed on release. It found it's audience a few years later on home video.
"The Thing" also bombed and wasn't really appreciated until like a decade later.

Carpenter writes or co-writes the music for most of his movies. He also wrote the famous Halloween theme himself. When asked about his film scores, he said he's not the best composer out there, but he is cheapest composer he knows. Synthwave and Darkwave fans (music styles inspired by late 70's, early 80's synth based film scores) keep Carpenter in high regard. Carpenter was also hired to make the music for PlayStation 1 game Sentinel Returns (sequel to a weird, surreal, Sci-Fi themed 3-D puzzle game "Sentinel"). I had that on PS (the original I played on C-64) and sometimes I would just put the disk on a CD player and listen to the level soundtrack, which was recorded on the disk as regular CD music tracks.

Raiden and Shang Tsung were actually inspired by the Three Storms and Lo Pan respectively, yeah.
Jack knocking himself out by shooting into the ceiling and the movie cutting back to his passed out body kills me every time, lmao!
Love Lo Pan and Egg Shen's beam of war battle with the two ancient warriors swordfighting.
There's a small comic that explains the ending. Because Jack killed Lo Pan, the monster is bound to serve and follow him until he dies.

"That sound like a problem for the Ghostbusters!"
Same VFX crew. This was their very next project.
"What inspired John Carpenter to make this film?"
The script was originally a Western. It was based on The Tong Wars, an actual bloody conflict between Chinese criminal organizations in San Francisco's Chinatown in the 1880's. The Cinemax/HBO show "Warrior" is set during these events. Jack Burton was originally a cowboy and the whole thing was about getting his horse back instead of his truck.
Carpenter was inspired to make this movie after seeing the Hong Kong movie "Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain" by Tsui Hark, which is even more gonzo crazypants than this movie. Tsui Hark was inspired to make Zu after seeing Star Wars. He hired some of the Star Wars VFX crew to make it.
