  • I will being using a rocket stove to fire roast peppers, tomatoes and other vegetables. It gets very hot with a nice flame and little wood is needed. It is easy to build and only costs about $20 to $30 and even cheaper if you get the bricks for free. This is a great way to roast garden vegetables. The test run was delicious!

    Wow Gary! That is a great idea! I know you thinking about roasting veggies. But I'm thinking BBQ! Also some roasted peppers and maters. Plus you're going to get that good natural wood smoke flavor that pops in your mouth! Thank you for sharing!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  9 лет назад +5

      Youre welcome. In the video I was using soft wood and plant debris which burns way too fast. So make sure you use hard wood. Also you can put a brick in front of the opening and decrease the airflow in by sliding it around. That slows the burning. It will give you more time for the BBQ to cook.

    I’ve looked at a lot of rocket stove videos and this one is excellent! My grandson is coming for a visit and I would like to teach him this skill. I did note leaving the two bricks sticking out rather than trying to cut one. You could still center your stove on the paver by letting the bricks stick out one quarter brick on each side. (Maybe I’m a little ocd.) Also, I’m wondering how fast the fuel burns while you’re trying to cook? Are you constantly feeding the fire? If so, you really need a kid when cooking on a rocket stove. 😆 lol
    Thanks for the great video!

    Thx for the video - three questions.
    * why do you want 7 layers why can't you do it with 6 layers (does the height increase the heat/ efficiency) ?
    * why did you put an extra grate on top. What is its purpose?
    * can it be scaled up to use larger woods so that you don't have to keep feeding the woods?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  5 лет назад

      This was just a model. You can decrease or increase the level to your desire. The grill is to just stop stuff from falling in. Not needed. And yes you can make it larger.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  9 лет назад +1

      I dont enough about biochar to be helpful. I know this would get hot enough and you can put a brick in front of the air intake/fuel area to help regulate the oxygen and manage the fire a bit. Besides that... I don' know.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      +ohvnaq they could but they are fire baked and that really keeps the water out from rain. And if water goes it a hole it will steam out the hole. Water has to be trapped in it.

    Nice design, but your grates are probably zinc coated (galvanized) and when heated will output toxic gas. You don't want to breathe that or cook on it. Go with steel grates.

    instead of a 15x15. do a 30x30. now u can do a double burner.. veggies on side and hotdogs on the other for the kiddos

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      Good idea.

    • @kathleenzimmerman8227
      @kathleenzimmerman8227 7 лет назад +2

      OR... should you build two of the same size side by side? Seems to me there would be too much fire coming up to separate the *burners*. ie: takes one temp to do veggies, and another temp for veggies.

    • @medlytek
      @medlytek 7 лет назад +2

      good point. would have to be side by side. then u have 2 bricks separation between the fire.
      also on the left in the empty hole u can add a layer strait up. then u have 3 brick separation.

    • @kathleenzimmerman8227

      I actually built my *2-burner* side by side tonight!!! I commented above. I just built them side by side, using pavers. (its all I had). I consider this a *prototype*, and, if all works well, I'll let you know. If all DOES go well, I will buy fire brick, and *glue* them together somehow, so it will be a permanent installation. I don't know how to upload pics yet, but, when I learn, and if you want them, I would be willing to share :)

    Because, you are using brick that doesn't soak moisture, does it also heat up faster than using other bricks?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  8 лет назад

      +MyLifeInBinary The bricks dont seem to get that hot. Since the cooking isnt taking so long that might be issue. I use it for charring. But it works nicely.

    Cover it with a slip on 55 gal heavy mil plastic bag in heavy rain or winter when not in use. Bungee around once....or not.....just a suggestion. Nice though, you can put it away or move it around....can't be more then 39-40 pounds constructed. Some areas make one get a permit to burn wood on their property......especially in Manhattan, no flame rule....even in a thick brick oven. Beside, twigs are a freak find in Manhattan.

      I think you can. I am looking for a cheap cast iron skillet. It was actually developed for less developed Countries for full cooking. Places where there is limited wood to burn. You would need some hardwood twigs I think to keep coals going. It burns through soft wood really fast.

  • @jakeblanton6853
    @jakeblanton6853 3 года назад

    I would think that the type of scrap wood that you are using would not impart a particularly desirable flavor to whatever you are roasting, just like you don't just use ANY wood for BBQing... I've made one of these (albeit at bit larger) to burn up some trimmed limbs and vines from my yard and the only time when the smoke was something that I would consider putting food over it would be when I was using some limbs from the live oak tree in my yard...

    that rain gutter cover you're using looks galvanized. galvanized metal is HIGHLY TOXIC!. Always use untreated metals and wood when burning.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  8 лет назад +2

      +Randar How long does it stay toxic after being burned? Thanks

    • @straydogg1000
      @straydogg1000 8 лет назад +2

      not too sure i think once it's burned off it should be fine but i know it can be quite lethal in large amounts

    • @michaelphillips7057
      @michaelphillips7057 8 лет назад +8

      +Randar You could just use the mesh from those throw away bbqs. No toxicity

    YAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYMEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-D :-D :-D Thank you very VERY MUCH for sharing this video!!!!!!! I ALSO built one right next to it, for a *double burner*. I'm jus SOOOOPROUDO'MYSELF!!!!!!!! I didn't think I could do it :/ And, without YOUR pattern... I couldn't. I would upload a picture for you, but, I don't know how to do that, either :/ I just finished it tonight, and it was too late to light a fire. If there is a tomorrow, Lord willing, I will light the fire, and be able to begin cooking outside, where I feel like I belong. :-D
    One question.... would you measure the dimensions of the ID of the chimney? Mine turned out to be 4X4, but, I also used pavers to build it. Since you used firebrick, I was curious to know if the chimney ID turned out different? Thanks again!!!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  7 лет назад

      Congrats! It is close to 4x4. Plus or minus an inch will work. Good luck.

    So red brick won't explode?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  8 лет назад

      +Heidi Boraski I suppose it could but I did a lot of research and it says no. The cinder blocks are at risk primarily as the have greater pores and more water gets in. The thing is that usually the cinder blocks just steam and crack. True red break really doesnt abosrb that much water.

    that metal gutter cover is galvanized steel and can make you very sick if you breathe in the fumes it can cause Metal fume fever. that being said it is a very small amount of galvanized metal being used here but to be 100% safe make a small wood fire in your backyard and per burn it before you cook with it. after the galvanized has burnt away it should be 100% safe. i don't think that this small amount of galvanized steel could make someone extremely ill but better safe than sorry.

      Generally, that wire gutter mesh is not galvanized, but aluminum.
