I have read something about not using these types of bricks due to lead? And the heat can make the explode...any thoughts or experience in this? I have a bunch of old bricks and was going to make a rocket stove but wasn't sure if I should use them.
Lisa, wet "waterlogged" bricks or rocks can explode when exposed to high heat. A little rain doesn't hurt, but if they have been buried in wet mud or a creek bank don't use those! I would not be concerned about lead in these bricks, mostly because I am only cooking over the fire from the sticks in the center...if I was cooking on top of the brick surface, then I would take that more into consideration...unless it was a survival situation and only used as a temporary solution. :) Thank you for the question!
from what i have read, one needs to use "fire bricks" not the grey bricks from lowes/home depot etc...it cost a little bit more but worth the investment...
We were fortunate enough to find someone who was selling several pallets of fire brick for way cheaper than you could find in stores or online. We bought enough to line our wood stove plus a bunch of extras for projects such as this little rocket stove. So glad we did!
Another hack that I learned from my Hungarian in-laws...... when those bricks are super hot after doing your cooking, wrap them up in towels and put them in the bed or sleeping bag by your feet. Stays hot a long time and can keep you from freezing in a tough spot.
My mom said they did that when she was a kid, but they had a wood stove that they would keep the bricks on and around so they could switch them out as needed. This was before modern day heating was around.

You don't need to mess with breaking bricks in half. All you need to do is simply slide two opposing base bricks out an inch or two lengthwise. The angles that the air would be coming in might even create a vortex of air for a cleaner burn, and the shifted bricks would be easy to slide out more to clean out the base of ash or bits that fall through. I also don't see the need to have the base below the fire grate be two layers high. Move the grate down to the first layer, and let the superheated air do the cooking. Easiest way to create a cooking platform at the top is to lay two bricks flat across the corners, they'll have the stability to safely hold a kettle/pot/pan and be easy to adjust for size.
Yepp. I would build the whole thing laying the stones flat. She built them very high but not stable. There is no need to build very high. Stability is safer. It is a great idea though. Nobody really needs to own a grill as long as there are some bricks around.

When she said the grate was from a crock pot I was concerned about how long it would last above a vortex like that -- when the meat went directly on it I cringed because there's no telling what chemicals are going to be released from it by the direct fire under it. Overall, a good, quick method of cooking a meal. I love Rocket Stoves and Heaters, and the many ways they can be built once you know the basics and how they work 😊😊😊

Looks like an easy, useful project that I'd like to try out. But most of all, Thank You for sharing the Word of God with us. No doubt God will bless you big time.Keep up the good work.
I don't know if anybody mentioned this in past comments here, you can bust up 2 of your bricks to half-size and place them around the top so that you have air between the brick and the surface of your cooking utensil. I'll use a 2nd grate. I watched this video almost a year ago, finally got the bricks, and I am building one today!! Will burn up the little twigs and sticks that fall from the trees in my yard and cook something at the same time. it will definitely help save on electricity just a wee bit. Can use when too hot in house for cooking. hey, if the electricity ever goes out, I've ability to cook.thank you so much for this demonstration
If you score the surface of a brick, when you break it half, it will break evenly. You can use a nail to score the surface of the brick. Make the score line somewhat deep to ensure that the break is a good one.
That was great. I made mine from clay bricks..square but oblong.. I cook brekky out there with the g/kids using free twigs and branches that fall in my yard. I had my grate after the first course of bricks.. that way you can feed sticks in from the bottom (horizontally)once it is hot. It sits in the weather for a decade, doesn’t rust and fires up perfectly every time..ha.

Christa as I watched you building this I was wondering how you were going to bring the air in. Then I thought you were going to show us that the air leakage between the bricks was going to be the right amount of air to control the burn rate, then when you replaced the lower bricks I was thinking maybe you were going to swing the bottom brick out like a little door to control the burn rate. You had my brain working overtime. Now I will have to build this and try the lower swinging door to control the fire with different woods. Thanks for the video. God Bless
I bought a rocket stove that I just love. It has served me well. This is good to know how to do. Never say I will never be in a situation where I would have to build one like this.
I know my grandchildren would be very impressed by their Gran if I whipped up some hotdogs on my rocket stove, and then had the items to do S'mores for dessert.
I rarely comment but this is a great, simple stove that anyone could build with few bricks. So often these things require more material, labor, time, and wherewithal, which one may be short of in emergencies I"m glad I came across the video.
Oh how I love this channel! Spiritual and practical helps in time of need! Thank you so much for sharing! God bless you and God bless the people in this world!
If you are using HANGERS as a cook surface, try to find out if they have a coating on them before cooking food directly on them. Many hangers have paint or a plastic coating that will melt off eventually, but you don't want that touching/poisoning your food.
Keep it simple! Don't worry about pizza ovens when you are teaching a basic rocket stove. I have used them for years! Thanks for the reminder that we need to pick up a couple of new grates. Ours are used. God Bless you!
If you close the hole at the bottom just a bit, it will deliver less flame thus, less heat. The more it is open at the bottom, the more flame and heat. Trial and error... using different sizes of brick. Enjoyed your video. God Bless.
Heat rises, and fire thrives on air, creating a hotter fire with less smoke; same principal as a Dakota Fire Hole to camp without smoke. You are blessed.
I hope to see the pizza oven version that you suggested! I love your videos! I appreciate your sharing, caring, patience, kindness, compassion and detailed teaching and encouragement! Thank you!
I had one built out of concrete blocks and was told it might last only a year or two. Well, many cracks later, after 8 yrs of service, it collapsed. So, I am building one using fire bricks I got super cheap at a farm auction, salvaged red bricks, and a clay chimmney flue. Did my rocket stove launch pad out of concrete and built up two levels of one and half concrete blocks, fire brick on top, the flue that has an 8x8in cut out for fire fuel insertion, red brick cemented to encase excepting the two missing for opening to the flue and topped off with a largegrate from a commercial gas stove. The original concrete block rocket stove I used in summer months and also used for my pressure canner. This new one will be used the same way.
I watched this video yesterday morning and built this stove in the afternoon. I set a few broken bricks on top so I could set my bucket on top of them and had a large enough opening to add more sticks for fuel. I used this to boil about 3 gallons of water to dye and wax some bobcat traps. It worked great!
If only all people in our little clique shared such useful info without all the hype and "I, I, I"! Wishing thinking. Speaking of "I", I've never heard of a discada until your last video. My neighbor used to farm a huge area and yesterday we spoke. He's going to give me all the 22" blades I want and in return, I'm building him and his parents one. They are going to make fantastic Christmas gifts! I and my family would rather receive a gift fashioned with love than the fanciest retail item of the same design. Thank you for all the wonderful information you share with us.
I love watching stuff like this! I live in an apartment so I will never have the opportunity to practice it, BUT having the knowledge could come in handy to help someone else. I want to say ALSO that I see those kinds of racks that you used, at thrift stores all the time. I might just have to start collecting some of them. They could be a great barter item! Thanks for all you do!
@@johnmitchell1614 ..sterno gel? The burning gel in can that caterers use under their pans to keep food warm in a buffet line. They can be found in grocery stores, Dollar Tree, dollar stores, hardware stores, etc. Just ask for them.
Thank you for making this video. Useful and practical when 'survival' is critical. Pros & Cons: Like you said, this is a simple 'brick' rocket stove. And, the goal was to used bricks that are similar in size, shape, and no defects. Otherwise the tower of bricks are unstable and become an accident waiting to happen. The grill that you used for food was 'dangerous' because the feet barely fit on the bricks. The slightest movement of the grill and the feet would've slipped off the edge of the brick. A terrible waste of food and someone could've got burned from the falling grill.
I have a gas stove and it came with some spare racks that go over the burners. They’re perfectly square and would probably work perfectly on the top of That brick rocket stove! Thanks for the great idea!
That is a good idea, but you want to be careful if you use rocks on top for spacing. Some rocks will explode with the heat. If you have time using mud as mortar might be another option. Great video Thank you.
We made a rocket stove from a metal five gallon bucket and used metal vent pipe with an elbow and then packed sand in between the walls for insulation. We take it with us whenever we go camping. A few sticks will produce a flamethrower out the top. Also, if you visit Monticello you will see Jefferson used these in the kitchen to cook on. There is a row of them.
I am familiar with many types of rocket stoves and even the original, the Dakota fire pit. I love this, and, your Christ based channel channel, I've definitely subscribed, and will be sharing. God bless you as well!
Great video, thank you. I worked at a brick company here for quite a while. A little info for you. Kiln-fired brick is safe to use in an aboveground fire pit. These bricks are typically fired to 1800ºF and easily withstand the heat of flames. Landscaping brick that's been kiln-fired is safe to use. Brick paver stones should also be safe to use. Also nothing used in them are is dangerous at the very low temps you are using them for.
I love these improvised focket stoves! This is about the simplest design I've seen. I prefer plans that allow you to feed the fire without removing your cook pot but they do usually require a bit more planning and some sophisticated tools. This is great for what it is, simple and cheap. thanks for posting.
It doesn't have to require sophisticated tools, you can lay out a design using graph paper for either bricks or cinder blocks. You can make it as large or as small as you want, and it's really simple to do. It does require more planning and forethought, however the build will still go quickly and efficiently. I, too, prefer a build that allows you to feed the fuel at the bottom, which is a true rocket stove and burns the wood cleaner and more efficiently. Overall, this is a quick, easy build that you can do without much planning and will get the job done 😊😊😊
Thank you for this. If you put the bottom grate down one layer you could feed wood in from the side (through the top hole) to easily keep the fire regulated.
That would actually make the rocket stove less effective. The point is to have fast moving air feeding it from underneath. By adding more holes in non optimal locations, you're proposing just a regular fire with a column above to direct the heat.
Nice and easy. Check out the vlog from Azerbaijan. This couple use mud and straw to turn a metal bucket into a daily use rocket stove. They also build all kinds of outdoor stoves and ovens. I've seen the Primitive builder channels make rocket stoves by digging short tunnels in the dirt and using Cobb or mud and straw.
There are lots of designs out there and fun to play around with. One of these stoves would be a handy thing to have in the back yard Or at a camping place. An outdoor cooking place would be good for summer cooking. It would be a good thing to practice cooking on it . Thanks for all you do.
I just for the track I needed to finish building my rocket stove. I LOVE it. I started with 2 vertical cinder blocks-. For added height. Then I added a 16 inch square patio brick for my raised flat surface.went by your directions (mostly : ) from there : ) it turned out wonderfully!!!!!!! Can't wait to cook on it : ) Thank you!!
Hi, I built one of these and it is working great for us. I had built one before but with the bricks on their side, it worked but wasn´t the greatest. However, this gives it a bit more room in there and works much better, for me! Thanks a bunch!
You had me at 'brick'. Lol Good idea when other resources aren't available. But I do have concerns over the safety of this stove. 1. Its not stable. 2. Hot water or grease could burn someone when or if spilled. 3. Not everyone will be able to construct on a flat patio making it even less sound. 4. Regular brick and block can handle only so much heat Short version be very careful. Perhaps if the brick were stacked flat instead of on edge it may help some. That aside I appreciate the idea and creativity. The rocket stove is a super cooker and definitely needed in a crisis. Thanks for the vid. Love them.
She did say it was for emergencies, if I had to make one it would be on very uneven ground, but hey,,, it's an emergency, not for every day use! So you should be careful anyway

Lost both parents in the last two years, brothers won't talk to eachother and i am a single guy with few friends which have families themselves. No happy holidays for me, more a period to ignore, to go through as fast as possible. haha But for survival it's a great stove. :)) God bless you!
I love your videos, the information is so useful! You are so genuine and a beautiful child of God. On a side note I’m still working through my homemade liquid laundry detergent which I love. Thanks for that video too. ❤️
A suggestion: if you put that top grill corner to corner instead of side to side, there is much less of a chance of it slipping off while you're cooking.

Your hair is absolutely gorgeous. I once had long thick hair but life & covid took about 75% away. I've been heartbroken & at times depressed from it. Any ideas how to restore it is welcomed. God Bless you!
You could also pan sear the meat in a cast iron pan and save your meat from the ash heap covering it. Sautée onions and mushrooms with a shot of olive oil then place in another pan off the fire. Add meat and as it sears and cooks thoroughly, then add the Sautéed portion back in the pan. Gal 2:20
Good stove build Christa! Those stoves heat like a blow torch! Try throwing just a little (only a few handfuls) dirt or sand from nearby down first if building on a hard surface. It will stabilize the first course of bricks. It's good to see you back in "production" mode :-).
I have read something about not using these types of bricks due to lead? And the heat can make the explode...any thoughts or experience in this? I have a bunch of old bricks and was going to make a rocket stove but wasn't sure if I should use them.

Great idea, would be excellent for boiling and purifying water. Thanks
Rocket stoves also conserve fuel
I rarely comment but this is a great, simple stove that anyone could build with few bricks. So often these things require more material, labor, time, and wherewithal, which one may be short of in emergencies I"m glad I came across the video.
Oh how I love this channel! Spiritual and practical helps in time of need! Thank you so much for sharing! God bless you and God bless the people in this world!
Bless you dear sister. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom.
This is where cast iron makes for a great choice..glad we have a couple of full sets along with 6 didfferent sized dutch ovens.
I like the fig tree back drop.
Thanks for all these videos.
May God richly bless you and yours.
Keep prepping and keep praying♥️
God Bless.
excellent lesson...i am 61 yrs old gal and i understand this perfectly...good job! God bless🥰
As a bricklayer I’d suggest using fire brick. Brick would last longer under intense heat and they fit tighter
I watched this video yesterday morning and built this stove in the afternoon. I set a few broken bricks on top so I could set my bucket on top of them and had a large enough opening to add more sticks for fuel. I used this to boil about 3 gallons of water to dye and wax some bobcat traps. It worked great!
Where did you make the opening to add sticks? On what level? Thanks!
Best rocket stove demo ever!
you bless me everytime I watch you
If only all people in our little clique shared such useful info without all the hype and "I, I, I"!
This is so great! Even an old gal like me could build that! I want one now! Thank you for a great video!
Alright then, you don't have to be a rocket stove scientist to make one of these stoves for sure.
The most beautiful and intelligent homesteader ever!
Thank you so much for you kind voice and bring knowledge and scriptures 🙏🙏🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thanks for all you do!
consider Sterno gel to cook in emergency
@@cindylong624 What's Sterno gel?
@@johnmitchell1614 it is in a can. Available at camping stores, and online.
@@johnmitchell1614 ..sterno gel? The burning gel in can that caterers use under their pans to keep food warm in a buffet line. They can be found in grocery stores, Dollar Tree, dollar stores, hardware stores, etc. Just ask for them.
Yea
Thank you, I've never seen s rocket stove made quite like this one! Definitely looks doable! And thank you to Chris also! 🙂 God bless!
Thank you! I just bought bricks on clearance at Lowe’s for ,62 each!! Can’t wait to try this!
I say you do another episode showing the pizza oven. ❤️
Hi there
I have a gas stove and it came with some spare racks that go over the burners.
I love the rocket stove idea and hadn’t seen a video on it in years, so thank you 🙏. I love the idea of a ‘rocket oven’ to maybe even cook bread!
Just use a dutch oven over the stove, and use a smaller fire to manage the temperature.
@@Kune35 Cowboy Kent Rollins has videos of baking in dutch oven using coals as heat source
I was wondering that, it does seem easier
It doesn't have to require sophisticated tools, you can lay out a design using graph paper for either bricks or cinder blocks. You can make it as large or as small as you want, and it's really simple to do. It does require more planning and forethought, however the build will still go quickly and efficiently.
I, too, prefer a build that allows you to feed the fuel at the bottom, which is a true rocket stove and burns the wood cleaner and more efficiently.
Overall, this is a quick, easy build that you can do without much planning and will get the job done 😊😊😊
God has blessed you. Thank you for being a help for us
Thank you for this. If you put the bottom grate down one layer you could feed wood in from the side (through the top hole) to easily keep the fire regulated.
I was observing the same thing. 👍
That would actually make the rocket stove less effective. The point is to have fast moving air feeding it from underneath. By adding more holes in non optimal locations, you're proposing just a regular fire with a column above to direct the heat.
Lady, that was an outstanding demonstration.
Beautiful, very nice, and the brick stove is awesome also. Thank You !
There are lots of designs out there and fun to play around with.
One of these stoves would be a handy thing to have in the back yard
Or at a camping place.
Great video!
For those who don't have bricks, you can also dig a Dakota Fire Hole which is just an in ground rocket stove.
Thank you!
Ok. Now I'll save my old bricks. Thanks for the idea and how to video.
Hi, I built one of these and it is working great for us. I had built one before but with the bricks on their side, it worked but wasn´t the greatest. However, this gives it a bit more room in there and works much better, for me! Thanks a bunch!
Thanks for your sharing
Thanks for watching!
Your a blessing and beautiful inside. Ty 🙏
That was great! Thank you for reading The Word of The Lord. Bless you sister
You had me at 'brick'. Lol
Good idea when other resources aren't available. But I do have concerns over the safety of this stove. 1. Its not stable. 2. Hot water or grease could burn someone when or if spilled. 3. Not everyone will be able to construct on a flat patio making it even less sound. 4. Regular brick and block can handle only so much heat
Short version be very careful.
This woman is a sweetheart.
Blessings!
Yes, "our world needs it more than ever"...for us to go out and bless someone. Lord, please provide opportunities for us to be a blessing to others and someone to share the word with, in Jesus Name, Amen
Lost both parents in the last two years, brothers won't talk to eachother and i am a single guy with few friends which have families themselves.
No happy holidays for me, more a period to ignore, to go through as fast as possible. haha
But for survival it's a great stove. :))
God bless you!
Smart, creative and beautiful !
Describes Christa perfectly
Your hair always looks so pretty. You are the coolest survivalist lady I know.
God bless you abundantly 🕊️
Our world does need a blessing!
I love your videos, the information is so useful! You are so genuine and a beautiful child of God. On a side note I’m still working through my homemade liquid laundry detergent which I love. Thanks for that video too. ❤️
Particle and good looking....winning combination.
A suggestion: if you put that top grill corner to corner instead of side to side, there is much less of a chance of it slipping off while you're cooking.
Cool can't wait to try it! JESUS ROCKS!!
Be very safe some can blow up. People use river rocks they will blow up. I make this rocket 🚀 stove last month it’s so cool.
Wow, she is absolutely gorgeous! I watched just because she is so nice to look at but watching she is also super sweet and had good ideas. And she is Godly.
Very nicely done, just with a few simple things a perfectly working rocket stove
Wow Krista, I love your videos. And look forward to your Bible verses thank you from another Tennessee native love you neighbor take care
Your hair is absolutely gorgeous. I once had long thick hair but life & covid took about 75% away. I've been heartbroken & at times depressed from it. Any ideas how to restore it is welcomed. God Bless you!
Your hair will grow back it is only temporary. Try Nutri-ox kit and vitamins. Mine grew back after covid.😊
Gal 2:20
Thank you, looking forward to making one of these.
Wow….a spiritual woman. I’m in love! Thanks for the ideas.
This channel rocks 💯 Thank you 🙏
Wow that was great ,construction dinner and a word from the Good book all with on angel thankyou God Bless
Thanks so much for showing how to make this simple stove.
The most amazing part of this video is the verse at the end... amen
Good stove build Christa! Those stoves heat like a blow torch! Try throwing just a little (only a few handfuls) dirt or sand from nearby down first if building on a hard surface. It will stabilize the first course of bricks. It's good to see you back in "production" mode :-).
Good idea!
you are expert?
Thank you PREPSTEADERS for all you do. But I also want to thank you for keeping Gods words alive ...big huggssssssss
Do not use any grills from refrigerators or freezers. Heated they can cause cadmium poisoning.
