I have a 10 year old pair of these VWerks, I only use them for big mountain trips every couple of years so they are still in great shape. My favorite big mountain skis ever
Awesome review man, these Katanas got my full attention for the construction. Being 185 and 90kgs would you go 177 or 184s? Like the carving skiing with good descent speed.
I live in Colorado and have a 93mm ski already. Debating a 105 and then these given 2 trips this year but it seems like a LOT of ski. I’m 175cm and 78kg and was looking at 177
Fantastic video!!! I'm torn between getting a pair of 2023 katanas(184) or the 2023 qst 106 (in 181 or 189). I know they are very different skies but they are both at a good price 400€. I'm 190 about 82kg. My favorite typ of skiing is going fast going through things but i do enjoy the woods as well. I just don't know if the katanas will be to much in the right Swedish woods
The older QST you mention has a wide nose and isn't so good for hiking. However it's a very versatile ski. I would take the katana for sure but mount the binding forward!
Thanks for a great review! I'm looking to get a VW Katana as my second touring ski for deeper days. Unsure whether I should get the 184 or the 191 (I am 190cm/85kg). This video was the most relevant opinion on picking the right size for touring. Can you reveal how tall and heavy you are, @alpean_academy?
Or get the advantages of both lengths by using a longer ski on your strong leg and a shorter ski on your weak leg. Easy switchbacks to one side, quick turns to one side vs. maximal stability on the other side! Hell, you could even use a light skimo race ski on one side and heavy freeride ski on the other to have at least one perfect ski for every situation!
Great video! I know it's not the same ski Blaze 94, however I'm curious on the Volkls mounting points. My ski has recommended -13 from center. Katana -14. So in both skis it looks like waaay in the back. I'm planning on mouting bindings next week and I'm agonizing over the choice wheather to go recommended +1 or +2. Some people say it's fince to forward mount them.. some say that it it's directonal ski its better to leave it as designed on recommended. what do you think???
sorry to be late! Well I heard the ski can be mounted normally with recomended position. However, it's depending on your gear and proportion. start with recomended and it's no problem to drill it new if it doesn't fit. Good luck.
Excellent review!!!! Thank you sooo much. I have the Katana V Werks 184cm and mounted them at recommended point. I got used to it, but I completely agree with you on all your statements. I wish I would have gone +2 or maybe even +3 as you did, because I can totally attest to what you obviously prefer as you tried both options. I haven't had the opportunity to try a foreward mounting point but I know you are totally right. Also choosing a size shorter for touring I totally agree with. It just outweighs the benefits going longer size. WELL I just got some Völkl Mantra V Werks and went a size shorter at 178cm, BUT I am not sure where to mount them. The Mantra V Werks are traditional chambered. Have you skied them? Do you know anybody? What would you do? Recommend? This was such a great review, I thought to reach out for help!!! Thank YOU and have a great live as well!!!!
Hey Beat, Thanks for the confirmations and yes, I had the mantra in the same size too... actually I still have it but to sell! 😉 Because: where ever I mounted the Binding the mantra Vwerks was to soft for me in the front of the Binding. I literally popt regularly over the ski when there were small bumps. Well, this might be because of my lack in ski skills but if i would try the ski again I might try to ix the binding 1-2cm behind the recommended position. Just to have little more stability in front and less long tail, which presses the front part of the ski downward.... Does that make sense to you?
It does make sense, more so if I align the boot center to the recommended mounting point. There is a lot of tail left. Wow I'm confused 🤔. It just doesn't look right for a Mantra and I've had plenty versions, of which I kept the 100 full rocker model, I think was the best Mantras ever! I also kept the 102 's, as I appreciate the extra stiffness. Mounting at -3 seems almost appropriate. Have you tried different mounting positions on the Mantra V Werks or is the front just to soft in your opinion to even try? Unfortunately I haven't skied them yet, but I'm a little disappointed that you are willing to depart from them. 😄 Thank you for your time enriching me with valuable information on the open book situation left by Völkl.
@@alpean_academy An excellent and detailed informative review. A lot of information going around the mounting point at +2 or +3 cm forward. Could you please share the insight on how did you choose the 2.7 cm mounting point? It would be helpful for me as well since I have bought a new pair and planning to install a binding later on.
As I remember it's pretty much precise 177. I don't think that this would play a role to be honest. It's more important where you mount the binding. So if you mount it 3cm more in front you get a longer tail, right? What's the question about?
Best review I, ve ever heard! Thanks.
thanks a lot 🙏

Advantage of the shorter ski is also better control if a couloir gets tight
absolut!
This pretty helpful for me. Thanx 🙏
I had the VW RTM 2016 86 under foot
Best ever.

Hi,
Well, your dimensions are far smaller than these of Katana. However a 177cm will work for sure great vor you.

hey manuel,
184 seams to me the right length for you. just make sure you fix the Binding forward

Hey Beat,
Sorry for that super delayed reply. Have you already fixed the Binding. Maybe we could chat on insta channel?
Yes let's do. @thepeakbeat
great review, if you were 189cm and 100kg would you go for the 191cm?
what is your skiing style, are these muscle weight or belly fat 😅? maybe the ski is to soft and you need a camber 🤔
@@alpean_academy 9% body fat and pretty strong. agressive style.
I might have missed it but where did you mount your 177's ? Did you mount boot center, or ?...
Thanks !
I mounted the boot 2.7cm more forward. This means the middle of the skiboot is 2.7cm in front of the recommended line. Did that help?
👍😎@@alpean_academy

2.7cm forward from center
@@alpean_academy Got it.Appreciated. How did you choose 2.7 cm instead of 3 cm or 2 cm?
what is the actual length of the 177cm? is it closer to 179 cm as the Mantras?
I didn't measure to be honest. But what would it change? Would you measure it on the bas (full surface) or horizontal line?
