- By following 3 simple rules, you can grow pigs faster and more efficiently in the cold winter months. I explain these factors, as well as a possible solution for pigs that nip at each other. (Hint: it includes a late Christmas for the pigs!)

Sorry to hear about the injured pig and his final outcome but you did the proper thing. We were taught by our Dad not to let any animal suffer no matter how much you care for them. Those pigs are smart they setup their bedding area in the back away from the open end of their pen. Its dryer and warmer back there. Thanks Pete for another good video.

I found the same thing with my pigs. They get board. I found a great toy in a well planted fence post in the middle of the yard with 2 tires over it. They would spend hours playing with it. The other thing they likes was an old yard broom bolted bristles out to the fence Pigs love to scratch.

We found that pigs would chew on each other, especially their tails, partially because they were bored. Like your Christmas tree, we put some old bowling balls in the pen for them to play with.

Another thing you can do is burn some limbs just enough to blacken the limbs to an outer charcoal state they will nibble and push the limbs around and they will nibble all the charcoal off, and this helps them 2 different ways... one: it keeps them from being bored, and two: the charcoal acts as a natural de-wormer

Bend back baling wire several times about 6-8" long to form a metal hot dog, then tie the end to the fencing about 6" off the ground. I raised thousands of pigs in confinement and used this method to stop the ear and tail biting. Worked for me!

Pigs also love hay. Lots of seeds and leaves. Pigs are natural foragers as you know. Grass clippings (although not too much) are good too.

Just discovered your channel. I'm in Southern Albany County. Thanks for taking the time to make the videos. They are very well done and provide great information. I know few people with pigs. Many of them seem to feed the pigs everything under the sun. I assume when you do that the meat is not as good and you never develop any consistency in the end product. Any thoughts? I understand and am sympathetic to folks who may have limited income but still want to raise their own food.
Hi Vincent, I have run into that too. I'm not a fan of feeding too many scraps to pigs. We bought feeder pigs once from a farm where they fed their butcher pigs sugar that was swept off the floor of a bakery. Very fatty meat was the result. In late summer/fall, we supplement our pigs' diet with apples & vegetables that are not sellable, given to us by some neighboring farms. Aside from that, they just get grain and whatever they can forage for in the pasture. I believe that the old saying "garbage in garbage out" applies to meat as well. The best meat comes from pigs fed a balanced diet.
Hey Pete, I farm pretty similar to you and on my water barrels for my feeder pigs I put three nipple drinkers per barrel one at about 4 in from the bottom and the next is about 10in up from the bottom and then the next at about 15in and I set the barrels on 4x4 oak blocks and I never had to raise the barrel yet and that way if there some size difference in the group they can take the one easiest to drink from. Hope this helps!

I really like your videos. I find them relaxing. You said you think your pigs eat less using a self feeder instead of feeding them by hand . Wouldn't that equate to slower growth? When I had feedlot cattle, it was considered good to get them to eat more.

Chew chains work great. Old bowling balls. Any thing for them to do
Pigs bite when they are bored. Give them something to play with. Logs free of slugs, big round rocks, dried corn on the cob etc.
This is a good advice. I let my 3 month old pigs in to a old wood pile, they loved it. They have torn the place apart, but loved doing it. Plenty of grubs, ant all sorts of the insects to eat. Tons of places to root and explore. They are happy pigs. One even has a favorite stick, she carries it around and plays with it.

After we have bon fires. I throw a few chard limbs in the pigs area they love them. They will eat and rub on them.

Hello there , very interesting video again. As a professional hog producer my self , i have maybe a better idea for your deworming process in your pigs.
When you make feed , blend garlic in it in the fist couple weeks.
It's a natural way of deworming.
And it's fitting in better in your total picture of doing things natural .
I also heard pumpkin was a good natural wormer. We always put our pigs over our garden. When the garden is done pigs go in. Right before garden goes in the pigs go to butcher. Garden is naturally fertilized and tilled up for us. So we always give our pigs the inside of pumpkins when carving and then when it’s time to get rid of carved pumpkins they get that also.
@@cfamilyfarm8980 how many pumpkins are you carving though? It can’t be a lot right? It would have to be a bunch of pumpkin to make any difference.
What kind of mixture of feed do you use?
Can you explain what kind of food you are feeding in regards to piglets to butcher size? Everything I’ve found had been in pellet form and your food seems to be powder form. Thanks so much my little farm is Learning tons from your page. Keep on sharing some of us do appreciate it
We use feed fresh ground by our local mill. It is mostly corn and soybeans with additional minerals/vitamins/probiotics. I am suspicious of pelleted feeds because I am less sure of their ingredients and how long they've been sitting on the shelf.
Pigs love to bite on planks too! Just make sure that it's a weaker kind of wood

Where are you located? It doesn’t look like winter is too aggressive, so I’m wondering if I could get by with a lean to for pigs, or if I should build an enclosed shed as I’m pretty far north. Is that pen all the more space you need for them until they reach market weight?
Could you raise feeders in a pasture setting with a basic shelter in the deep south wher we get fairly mild Winters?

I really love 💚farming. I lived on a farm in Bakersfield California. 30 acres 10 acres alfalfa 10 acres cotton and 5 acres was for our cattle 🐄 and 5 acres was where our house was at with a big grass yard. Well my dad sold the farm and we moved into the city man did I hate that. By the time I was 13 we moved back on a farm man was I happy. I could walk out ether the font door and go hunting for birds dove and pigeons.
Ehh you were just a baby at that point anyways. Plus, Bakersfield is a shithole.
Do you have to supplement the eating with feed? Let's say you can get enough "table scraps" from the grocery store with expired vegetables...will that do the trick or do you definitely need the feed for protein supplement?
It is hard to give pigs the nutritional balance they need by just feeding them scraps. Scraps should be viewed as a treat, not their main source of food.
What breed of pig are those? They look like a heritage breed.

I was always told to avoid letting your animals browse on needles. Is that not true?
Hi Gary, the spruce needles didn't bother the pigs a bit. I imagine some animals would be sensitive, but pigs seem to be able to eat just about anything without harm.
No matter what I do, I can't seem to train my pigs to use a nipple drinker. Any suggestions?
I saw in another YT vid that spreading some peanut-butter all over the nipple for a few weeks trains the pigs that water comes from the nipple.

Hi Russ, I've been doing some reading on the issue, and have learned many things can cause this habit. In can be that the pen is too small, their diet lacks enough salt, they don't have anything to browse on, or that one or more pigs just do it for no particular reason than it being a bad habit, then it spreads to the other pigs. I'm guessing here it is the lack of things to browse on. If my solution doesn't work, I'll try some of the other things. As always, thanks for watching!

@@gwc3721 Yes, at least in prior years we have. This year they might be double that; piglets are hard to find with this virus mess.
Last year our calf couldn’t drink so I shoved the feeding tube to her stomach but the 3rd day she fought and it went in her lung and she died in my arms

Hi Kberry, we have never fed whey. We would if we had a source for it. And being careful to use it as a supplemental food source, as we do when produce farmers give apples and vegetables.

My family had 3 boys. My dad used to say that he almost got a fork in the back of his hand reaching for the last pork chop. 3 teenagers would clean out the refrigerator in no time. Not helped by the fact that my mom was a great cook.

Giving an animal the best care we can and forming a personal bond with them gives them their best life. Would it be better to be cruel or indifferent to an animal for it's whole life? I don't think so. They go to slaughter because that is how our family makes a living.
