- Whitewashing terracotta pots using milk paint is as easy as one, two, three! It makes for an easy DIY planter makeover - taking your flower pots from blah to tada! Karla from Vintage Hip Decor demonstrates how to "age" or distress terracotta flower pots with Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint - this DIY home decor project is an easy transformation of flower planters from ordinary to "something different." Painting or whitewashing elevates the look of these popular clay pots and gives them a distressed patina. You can quickly use such distressing techniques to whitewash or age wood furniture, clay tiles, and much more! Just a reminder that if you live in cold regions, you should bring your clay pots indoors during the late fall and winter months. Ice will crack your pots.

Is it possible to keep the pots outside after painting? Thank you for this video, it is really helpful! π»
Yes, absolutely. They can be used outside.
Vintage Hip Decor thank you kindly!
I like how these never fade. Especially the indoor ones stay nice forever.
Yes! The milk paint soaks into the porous texture of the pot and they stay nice for years to come.
Yay, this weekends project has been decided after watching this video.. Thanks for the heads up on how I can do it properly.. Hope mine look like yours, they're gorgeous β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ. Love from Tracey in the UK π¬π§π¬π§π¬π§β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈxxx
You can do it!! I am so glad you found it inspiring. Thank you for watching!
This is by far the best way to age terracotta pots. Thank you!
Thank you Paula, glad you found us and that you like our method of aging terracotta pots. Soon we'll be prepping some more for this Spring season. ππΈπΌ
Nice
Glad you enjoyed it!
How has the milk paint lasted since you painted them? So pretty!
It lasts forever! Milk paint is very hardy especially on these pots that are very porous - it seeps right in.
Do you need to seal it? Since terracotta absorbs water from watering the plant, wont the paint eventually go away?
No, you don't need to seal it. This rustic, pigmented paint made with limestone, milk casein, clay, and other natural ingredients won't go away :)
Hi where can I get this paint? Or what other paint can I use on terracotta pots??
Hi, Claudia
We have a few colors available here:

I hope that helps!

What is milkpaint?
It is a powdered form of paint. It was used for many years before the modern paints that we know now.

:)
Will this work on plastic?
Hi, Virginia Yes, this works on plastic in which case you have to add equal parts of bonding liquid to your paint to make it stick.
