So simple yet soooo POWERFUL! I still remember the first time I heard this jam while working back in Detroit and I still blast it for me and my neighbors when I have it streaming! I just turned sixty and (against my cardiologists' advice) it still gets me goin'! Great job as always Mr. Rooney and the warmest regards from balmy Las Vegas, Nevada! D. Scott
I'm a bit late to this party, but, i ran across a video the other day where Dave credits the drummer from the Bad Brains, Earl Hudson, with where he gets most of his bag of tricks. Including the intro to Teen Spirit.
Here are some Dave Grohl drum covers I have attempted. I sound nothing like Dave (of course) but it's fun to try! Foo Fighters - 'My Hero' | ruclips.net/video/qogWWgEZX3U/видео.html QOTSA - 'No One Knows' | ruclips.net/video/l79BVT-snSM/видео.html Foo Fighters - 'Learn To Fly' | ruclips.net/video/gRvHMVPK6ns/видео.html Foo Fighters - 'Wheels' | ruclips.net/video/f4sCJM2qytI/видео.html Nirvana - 'Come as you are' | ruclips.net/video/RHtpcUyOA-w/видео.html
Glad you enjoyed it Brooke! This is obviously a lot more in depth for me. And a much longer video. So I really appreciate you watching and the generous feedback :)
Dave Grohl is definitely one of my favourite drummers musicians - and seems like a great guy, too. Love his drum work with Nirvana, Foo Fighters, QOTSA, Them Crooked Vultures. Thanks for this video. I wish I could hit like on some of these videos more than once. Another drummer who I think is underrated, and who I don’t think you’ve looked at on this channel yet, is Bill Berry from R.E.M., especially on tracks like “Lightnin’ Hopkins” from the album Document, which combines raw power and finesse in a Grohl-like fashion. Anyway, love your channel even though I’m not a drummer.
Hey man, listen to Scream’s LP Fumble. I think that’s the first recording of Grohl using his iconic Silky Yellow Tama Granstar kit. I believe it was recorded in .1989
A timeless classic. Dave Grohl is such an amazing musician. On this song, I like the tension between the drums and the bass guitar in the chorus. It sounds like that the bass is a little bit off or sloppy, but it brings a really powerfull feeling.
♣♣♣♣♣♣♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♣♣♣♣♣♣ You touch on so many important parts of making music and connect to people. The childlike attitude is exactly that what Dave tries to hold on to and that is a timeless legacy. Music does not have to be complex to be great, maybe even the opposite. The great thing about Nirvana and Grohl is that they wrote music that they could perform live at the same level; not all of their Grunge peers could do that. In 10 years you will still look back at this with pride; this was a very good one sir. Funny note: Checklist or Chicklist.
Legend ! There's s huge difference between drummers playing to a click and still sounding human and amazing and taking a drum track now and destroying it on a grid! .. I think the likes of Dave Grohl and Neil Peart ( I know, polar opposites but both legends ) playing to a click but still being able to push and pull , sound like themselves and engage with the composition is a testament to their ability .. I still can't play this sing a fraction as well as Dave Grohl but that's ok because I'm not him , I sound like me . Thank you Andrew , I really enjoyed your Analysis . And it also shows that great musicians transcend genres . Peace and love brother 👍🏻☮♥️🎶
Dave Grohl is such a good musician and human being! It was great sharing your experience admiring musicianship. Thanks for the gear head comment. I love to drum but I don’t know much about gear, and sometimes I feel alienated from a drum conversation about gear itself. Did you know Dave Grohl is staring in a horror/comedy movie next month?! It’s called Studio 666.
Great reaction video! So nice to be able to visualize the thoughts of a drum teacher on these legendary songs and drum lines. Andrew, listen to 'Blink182 - Anthem part 2 (studio version)' and check out what Travis Barker came up with in that one. The drum line he created to the verses is something i never heard before.. the way he fills up all the space on the verses is something out of this world.
If you're as big of a fan of Dave as you say, I hope you've watched his Sound City documentary - it's got some great stuff about recording studios in general and on Sound City in particular, and spends some time on Nirvana recording Nevermind there.
I hear his punk excellence coming through. The main thing he learned from Kurt was simple and catchy with melody….Dave still follows that philosophy with songwriting. I would love to see you compare his Nirvana work with Dave’s favorite piece Elephants by Them Crooked Vultures.
Yeah, I like that album too, but i also like "Bleach" their first album , "Blew, No Recess, Floyd the Barber, and Negative Creep" are my favs on that one.
I watched a couple of episodes of "From cradle to stage" with Dave Grohl and his mom - recommend it overall but he also mention that he "stole" the flams from some disco band. Well watch it!
If we're talking size of rack toms, you might want to have a look at this early early Foo's V1.0 gig from 1995 with the original drummer. I don't know if he was playing this size of kit in Sunny Day Real Estate or if this was a Grohl mandate but....well, judge for yourself: ruclips.net/video/HX7ld_dSoec/видео.html
1990/1991 was all about DEICIDE (self title) SLAYER (Seasons In The Abyss) MORBID ANGEL (Blessed Are The Sick) CARCASS (Necroticism: Descanting The Insalubrious) SEPULTURA (Arise) etc for me.
He was still holding his sticks backwards back then. Not sure every song was click track. They had recorded 5 songs before Butch asked for click track on Lithium. Whole clip. ruclips.net/video/js_A2Tg_4h0/видео.html
I love your videos. But even Dave has stated this song was already written with the previous drummer. Prior to him joining Nirvana. He liked the how it was so decided to keep it
The early days of Nirvana was more raw and their drummer Chad Channing might have layed some of the style for Dave to carry on. Their debut album Bleach is what grunge should sound like. Many of the songs had way more tom use and end double bass drum. It was fast, raw and unpolished. Nevermind became the leap for Nirvana into fame, but also the sad end. Kurt stated that he never wanted their success. The tom fills of the track In Bloom is also a Chad signature.
@@kevenrowe2958 it was still Chads tom groove on In Bloom tjat Dave used. You can hear Dave talk about it, when Nirvana was inducted to the rock and roll hall of fame.
Great reaction as always! I'd love to see some Delta Empire - ruclips.net/video/lPf8KMxHB3o/видео.html - probably my favorite new drummer on RUclips right now

@@AndrewRooneyDrums Hey, gotta question, both my younger brothers can play bass, regular guitar, some keyboards and a little drums. My dad used to play bass around the house and was in a small town country band when he was younger. My question is, I love the hell out of drums, but im 48 now, i would really love to play drums with my brothers and play songs we like. Should I start the journey to playing drums? it blows my mind when someone says he's one of the best or is the best in the world. I just don't get it. There's nothing difficult that he's ever done. He can hit hard and is fast yes but that's it. There's absolutely nothing he did in nirvana that's difficult. He himself said so. When he was in scream he did fast stuff.
