Applying Hard Ground to an Etching Plate

Step 3 in the process of preparing a plate for etching is to apply a ground- or a waxy tar substance called asphaltum that will dry and harden into a coating on the cleaned and beveled copper plate. Next we will be drawing into the ground using a stylus to reveal the bare copper and then place it in the acid to etch.
