Case Book Binding part 1: Making the Book Block
In this video I will show you how I create a case bound sketchbook. Case Binding is the "traditional" or "real" type of binding that most books are bound with. It's very satisfying to create because it looks like an authentic book! Journey with me in part one as I make the pages and stitch them together.

In this video I show you how to create a multi-colored linocut print using the Reduction Method. In this method, one block is used to print all the colors and each color is carved away after printing so as to "reduce" the area and layer the colors. It's an amazing and remarkable process and you should try it! #linocutprint #linocut #linocutprint #linocutprintmaking #linocuttutorial

    Its always been my understanding that acrylic and encaustic are incompatible. The result is a non-archival painting. Please explain how you know about acrylic with encaustic. Thx

    • @danaharrisseeger
      @danaharrisseeger 2 месяца назад

      Thanks for asking! I know from years of experience and working with multiple mediums that yes, you can paint encaustic over acrylic. The main thing is you want an absorbent surface for the encaustic to stick, and if you keep the encaustic thin or make sure that you mix in something absorbent such as marble dust (calcium carbonate) add collage with paper that has a tooth, etc. your encaustic won’t peel or fall off over time. Hope that helps!

      I don't have another video, but I usually use a couple baby wipes and then you can rinse with warm water and a scrubby sponge. If the linoleum is unmounted it can warp with the water, so dry it with paper towel or regular towel and then press under some books before using again.

As for the iron, I use a small travel iron, a regular iron and a Veneer edge banding sealing iron, which you can get at any home improvement store or Amazon. They run between $86-$93. With a regular iron, I was told to find one with a flat base..no holes. I have both and they work the same. The holes are for steam and wax + steam =😮 LOL If you're undecided, maybe you know another artist who uses them...and can let you try. Have fun!!!

    Hi there, What acid-free quality provides to printmaking ???

    • @danaharrisseeger
      @danaharrisseeger 4 месяца назад

      Hi there, paper has a tendency to yellow over time when exposed to air and light, especially if it contains acid. You will notice old newspapers that are brittle and discolored. Acid free paper doesn’t do that so it is archival and preserves the integrity of the artwork as it was first made. Cheers

      Thanks for watching! I have a really old photocopy machine, but laser prints with toner work. Sometimes the older machines work better because the toner releases more easily. When you are 'picking up' the colored yarn, are you picking up ALL the colored yard, even the ones on the bottom? I kept tilting my head while watching your video thinking I could see in the weft to see exactly what you were picking up.. 😆

      Yes, it's kind of hard to explain ha ha. The pattern is called a "pick" but you can "pick up" from below (the two patterned threads that are together to form a thicker or double thread. These are the ones that are below the Shed) or you can "push" down the two pattern threads that are showing above the Shed (the space created when you raise or lower the heddle). Does that make sense? Each "pattern thread" is really two that are strung together. If you haven't already, watch my "Warping the Loom" video which is Part 2: ruclips.net/video/SoLU8Eg-Xoo/видео.html

    If I paint on encaustic with oil paints, can I do a layer of encaustic on top of the paint? At what point do I fuse the paint - Let it dry first? Then add wax on top?

    • @danaharrisseeger
      @danaharrisseeger 7 месяцев назад

      Yes you can! You can fuse right after you paint. You don't need to let it "dry" but just know that if you fuse heavily, the paint will bleed into the background layer. So I fuse lightly and let it cool and fuse lightly again. You can test to see if it will smear before you add encaustic on top by running your finger or a tissue lightly over the paint. If it comes off, it's not ready for an encaustic layer. Hope that helps!

    How much would you sell this on the market? I’m thinking of selling it as an art comic (8pages) 2in x 2in. Thinking of it 5$ per book but is that low?

    • @danaharrisseeger

      Hi Faith, great question! Sale price depends on how much time you spend, how much it's worth to you, and how much you think people will purchase it for. 2x2" is pretty small. If you are making tons then selling them for a lesser price makes sense if you can sell a LOT of them. If they each take you an hour, then you are making $5 per hour (minus your materials cost). That's just a reference point. Hope that helps!
