The scene where Yoda lifts Luke’s X-Wing out of the swamp is my favorite scene in the entire trilogy. It perfectly encapsulates the magic of Yoda and the force. His message of size not mattering and Luke’s disbelief being the reason for his failure is so powerful. Gives me chills every time.

"IS THAT TRUE" was the question on everyone's mind for YEARS between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Biggest reveal in cinema history and no one could even agree if it Vader was lying or not.
I still remember I thought it was bs. Fortunately even though I first saw it in 1985, I rented the three videotapes at once and was quickly able to find out the truth of it. The first movie I have any memory of seeing, although I remember my family also watched a movie called short circuit which I had to agree to see to get them to rent Star Wars. I'm not sure how I knew about it without knowing the story, I think and my memory could be wrong I saw the cover in the video store and thought it looked cool. Oh Tron was another early film I saw, really enjoyed it, but I don't think I was quite as impressed with the graphics even though they were great for the time. The quality of the stories we had vs the tech was just amazing.
My father said that, at first, he thought Vader had to be lying, but when Vader telepathically called out to Luke and he responded, "Father?" That was when my father decided Vader probably wasn't lying.
It's not a sequel. It's the second film of a trilogy. A sequel is when a movie does really well, and they think, "Hey, let's make another one to cash in on our success".
@brandon23471 And why would they begin calling it Episode IV, once the next two movies were underway? Wouldn't it then be Episode I to the upcoming Episodes II and III? But that wasn't the situation, was it. Lucas had already sketched out a nine movie arc (this was eventually restructured to six, becoming the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy) before scripting what we now call A New Hope. The reason that SW IV: ANH was originally released simply as Star Wars was because Lucas was introducing a completely new story and concept in movie-making. SW was unlike anything that had ever come before, and he didn't know if his attempt to utterly revolutionize the movie business would be successful. The last thing he was going to do, from a marketing perspective, was to complicate things by telling potential audiences that this was just one part of a nine part series, oh, and by the way, we're not even starting at the beginning, we're going to jump in at episode four, so come on out to see my sci-fi-fantasy-space movie that will be totally baffling to you. It's easy to say, "Of course Star Wars would have been a huge hit", now. But at the time, it was truly revolutionary; and, there was no guarantee that it would succeed. It could have just as easily flopped, and just become one of those odd little cult classic gems. And, I don't think I am being "unnecessarily pedantic" because the op was, effectively, comparing apples and oranges by mistakenly classifying ESB as a sequel. It was not a sequel, it was the middle movie in a trilogy, and so the comparison to sequel movies is an unfair comparison, in my opinion, because there is a fundamental structural difference between the two. In a trilogy, there is a pre-planned, dynamic interplay between each movie that cannot exist within the isolated-ness of stand-alone movies. It is this additional dynamic layer that brings a gravitas to the trilogy which gives it, what I think is, an unfair advantage over the standard sequel.
Fun fact: If I remember correctly, Han's response to "I love you" of "I know" was adlibbed. The script was that he says "I love you too" but he changed it during the filming.
Ford reportedly had a fair number of ad libs. Lucas was not exceptionally gifted at writing dialog. As many missteps as were made in the Force Awakens, I think it was a sadly lost opportunity not to have Han and Leia turn the "I love you" scene around at their final parting.
In fact they filmed the scene multiple times and he did say "I love you, too" in the first attempts but nobody was satisfied with the result. Finally Harrison Ford started to improvise and this was finally the version that worked. But interesting is that today many young women who see this scene often dont find it convincing or charming and dont like it.
The reason for the animal attack on Luke in the beginning is the actor was in a car accident between the first movie this one. They needed to explain his facial scars, so they added that scene.
Luke's T-47 gets shot down. They could have just used make up until that scene and had him get injured since HIS SPACE SHIP CRASHED! There was no need for a hungry wampa to lose an arm or a taun taun to become an organic sleeping bag.

It’s very disappointing that everyone knows that spoiler. It was so epic watching it when it came out in the movie theaters. EVERYONE was SHOCKED to the core. It made the movie.
Hibernation is when the body slows down to conserve energy. Some animals do it during the winter when there is no food and the come out of it when it is spring. In this case, it's a type of suspended animation -- Han is basically frozen in time.
It's such a joy to watch these two ladies. And I do mean ladies. They really exemplify that. They way they act, present themselves, and dress. Their honest, pure sincere reactions. Is such a pleasure to see. Western women could learn a lot from them. Both are beautiful in every way. Not just in looks, in every way they possibly can be. They are the truest definition of grace, class and elegance.

Lando isn't a bad guy. He had to make a deal to save the city and its people. He had no way to fight back against the empire forces and protect his people. He had no choice but to make a deal. He tried to negotiate favorable terms but Vader kept changing the terms of the deal. In the original deal, the empire would have left the city and its people alone. But once his people were no longer protected, he changed sides. Also in the original script the line was "Obi-wan killed your father". However, they changed it, but didn't tell the majority of the cast. That was because certain people (particularly Fischer) had a tendency to leak info to the press. Then they pulled Mark Hamil into a room and told him the real line and that the others didn't know, so if it leaked they knew it would be him. However, there were a few people who still predicted the twist, because Darth Vader in German and dutch translates to "Dark Father." It was pure coincidence though because the script changed to that after the name was already set.
Lucas was kicking around the idea since at least 1978, as the actor who was in the Vader costume revealed the twist to a newspaper at the time. Perhaps because that got out or he had second thoughts for other reasons (Lucas was constantly rewriting) Vader was no longer Luke's father in the original Empire script in 1979. But Lucas saw what the screenwriter had done and was very unhappy, fired them, and we got this version of Empire with the twist. It was at the point where much of it had to be reshot and he had to give back control to the studio to fund all the reshooting, but wisely was able to keep the merchandising rights, a deal which the studio later fired the exec for making.

Also, I think that Vader is lukes father was not oart of the o.g. plan (despite what lucas might claim), because they needed alec guinness to sit on a log in the third movie to make his speech in movie 1 make sense.
Most people think this movie is better than the first, and objectively that mat be true. But I saw the original at the drive-in theater in 1977 when it came out. I was 10 years old. That was my first experience of Star Wars (and the world's first experience). Because it was my first experience of Star Wars and everything was completely new, it had more of an impact on me than the follow ups. Star Wars was a huge phenomenon that changed popular culture and changed movie making and had a major impact on all the kids and a lot of the adults who saw it back then. The lines at theaters went for blocks, and half the people were cosplaying Star Wars characters. There hadn't been anything like it, and hasn't really been anything like it since. So the first movie will always have a special place in my heart and is still my favorite. But I doubt it has the same impact on people watching it for the first time today as it did on those watching it for the first time in 1977, when it was fresh no one had seen anything like it before.
Most people may say that "The Empire Strikes Back" is the best, but they are just giving their opinions. There is no "Right Answer" when it comes to Star Wars films. We all have our favorites. If your favorite is "A New Hope", then that is the right answer for you. More power to you!

One of the reasons they had the Wampa (the giant clawed yeti creature) attack Luke and scratch his face was because Mark Hammil was badly injured in a car accident just before they started filming and after some surgery to repair his face, he looked noticeably different. Luke's failure in the Cave: Yoda sent Luke into the cave to test his self-control when he faced his own Dark Side - mostly his fear. It is why Yoda told him that his weapons were not needed, but Luke didn't believe him. Luke's vision showed him what he could become: an agent of Evil just like Darth Vader. Luke didn't recognize that the vision was false. He acted purely on his fear and anger.
Yoda: "A Jedi uses the force for knowledge and defense, never attack." Chi: "You need to attack to destroy the enemy!" ...uh-oh, Darth Chi confirmed for Star Wars episode 10? 😅
That's why the path of the Jedi is the more difficult one, by far. As a 21-year practitioner of martial arts, leaving violence as a last resort when you feel endangered is much more difficult than most people who've never been in such a situation realize, and recognizing when it is, actually, your last resort is rarely straightforward. I know a lot of instances where someone who was initially victimized or threatened ended up getting charged with assault or murder because they didn't understand where "self-defense" ended.
That's one of the best reactions to "I am your father" I have seen! Love it! Also: Vader is such a good character that when the actor who played his voice (James Earl Jones) was told Vader was Luke's father, even HE didn't believe it! Keep up the great work ladies!

The SSD Executor was a ship 11 miles long in universe. The model used in filming was one of the biggest at that point in time and was over 8 feet long.
ABSOLUTELY LOVED your reaction to this film!! Like many others, I consider it to be one of the very best in the whole franchise. The reveal of Luke's true parentage, that was an epic reaction indeed. I don't know if anyone else has recommended it to you, but a youtube channel did a video called scene 38 reimagined, which is the part in a new hope where vader and kenobi face off for the last time. it is well worth your time to give it a watch. For a sense of scale, the standard issue star destroyer is 1600 meters long, with a crew complement of around 37,000. The super star destroyer that is Vader's command ship is 19 km long with a crew of 280,000. The empire has a fixation with building oversized military equipment where part of the point is to try to project power and intimidation through sheer size.

"IS THAT TRUE" was the question on everyone's mind for YEARS between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Biggest reveal in cinema history and no one could even agree if it Vader was lying or not.
I still remember I thought it was bs. Fortunately even though I first saw it in 1985, I rented the three videotapes at once and was quickly able to find out the truth of it. The first movie I have any memory of seeing, although I remember my family also watched a movie called short circuit which I had to agree to see to get them to rent Star Wars. I'm not sure how I knew about it without knowing the story, I think and my memory could be wrong I saw the cover in the video store and thought it looked cool. Oh Tron was another early film I saw, really enjoyed it, but I don't think I was quite as impressed with the graphics even though they were great for the time. The quality of the stories we had vs the tech was just amazing.

It's not a sequel. It's the second film of a trilogy. A sequel is when a movie does really well, and they think, "Hey, let's make another one to cash in on our success".

But that wasn't the situation, was it. Lucas had already sketched out a nine movie arc (this was eventually restructured to six, becoming the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy) before scripting what we now call A New Hope.
The reason that SW IV: ANH was originally released simply as Star Wars was because Lucas was introducing a completely new story and concept in movie-making. SW was unlike anything that had ever come before, and he didn't know if his attempt to utterly revolutionize the movie business would be successful. The last thing he was going to do, from a marketing perspective, was to complicate things by telling potential audiences that this was just one part of a nine part series, oh, and by the way, we're not even starting at the beginning, we're going to jump in at episode four, so come on out to see my sci-fi-fantasy-space movie that will be totally baffling to you.
It's easy to say, "Of course Star Wars would have been a huge hit", now. But at the time, it was truly revolutionary; and, there was no guarantee that it would succeed. It could have just as easily flopped, and just become one of those odd little cult classic gems.
And, I don't think I am being "unnecessarily pedantic" because the op was, effectively, comparing apples and oranges by mistakenly classifying ESB as a sequel. It was not a sequel, it was the middle movie in a trilogy, and so the comparison to sequel movies is an unfair comparison, in my opinion, because there is a fundamental structural difference between the two. In a trilogy, there is a pre-planned, dynamic interplay between each movie that cannot exist within the isolated-ness of stand-alone movies. It is this additional dynamic layer that brings a gravitas to the trilogy which gives it, what I think is, an unfair advantage over the standard sequel.
“I am your father” - It's always refreshing to see a real reaction to this reveal.
Fun fact: If I remember correctly, Han's response to "I love you" of "I know" was adlibbed. The script was that he says "I love you too" but he changed it during the filming.

Ford reportedly had a fair number of ad libs. Lucas was not exceptionally gifted at writing dialog.
As many missteps as were made in the Force Awakens, I think it was a sadly lost opportunity not to have Han and Leia turn the "I love you" scene around at their final parting.
In fact they filmed the scene multiple times and he did say "I love you, too" in the first attempts but nobody was satisfied with the result. Finally Harrison Ford started to improvise and this was finally the version that worked. But interesting is that today many young women who see this scene often dont find it convincing or charming and dont like it.

The reason for the animal attack on Luke in the beginning is the actor was in a car accident between the first movie this one. They needed to explain his facial scars, so they added that scene.

It’s very disappointing that everyone knows that spoiler. It was so epic watching it when it came out in the movie theaters. EVERYONE was SHOCKED to the core. It made the movie.
Hibernation is when the body slows down to conserve energy. Some animals do it during the winter when there is no food and the come out of it when it is spring. In this case, it's a type of suspended animation -- Han is basically frozen in time.

Lando isn't a bad guy. He had to make a deal to save the city and its people. He had no way to fight back against the empire forces and protect his people. He had no choice but to make a deal. He tried to negotiate favorable terms but Vader kept changing the terms of the deal. In the original deal, the empire would have left the city and its people alone. But once his people were no longer protected, he changed sides.
Also in the original script the line was "Obi-wan killed your father". However, they changed it, but didn't tell the majority of the cast. That was because certain people (particularly Fischer) had a tendency to leak info to the press. Then they pulled Mark Hamil into a room and told him the real line and that the others didn't know, so if it leaked they knew it would be him. However, there were a few people who still predicted the twist, because Darth Vader in German and dutch translates to "Dark Father." It was pure coincidence though because the script changed to that after the name was already set.
It was either agree to Vader's deal or die. Easy choice.
Lucas was kicking around the idea since at least 1978, as the actor who was in the Vader costume revealed the twist to a newspaper at the time. Perhaps because that got out or he had second thoughts for other reasons (Lucas was constantly rewriting) Vader was no longer Luke's father in the original Empire script in 1979. But Lucas saw what the screenwriter had done and was very unhappy, fired them, and we got this version of Empire with the twist. It was at the point where much of it had to be reshot and he had to give back control to the studio to fund all the reshooting, but wisely was able to keep the merchandising rights, a deal which the studio later fired the exec for making.

Also, I think that Vader is lukes father was not oart of the o.g. plan (despite what lucas might claim), because they needed alec guinness to sit on a log in the third movie to make his speech in movie 1 make sense.

Most people think this movie is better than the first, and objectively that mat be true.
But I saw the original at the drive-in theater in 1977 when it came out. I was 10 years old. That was my first experience of Star Wars (and the world's first experience). Because it was my first experience of Star Wars and everything was completely new, it had more of an impact on me than the follow ups.
Star Wars was a huge phenomenon that changed popular culture and changed movie making and had a major impact on all the kids and a lot of the adults who saw it back then. The lines at theaters went for blocks, and half the people were cosplaying Star Wars characters. There hadn't been anything like it, and hasn't really been anything like it since.
So the first movie will always have a special place in my heart and is still my favorite. But I doubt it has the same impact on people watching it for the first time today as it did on those watching it for the first time in 1977, when it was fresh no one had seen anything like it before.
Most people may say that "The Empire Strikes Back" is the best, but they are just giving their opinions.
There is no "Right Answer" when it comes to Star Wars films. We all have our favorites. If your favorite is "A New Hope", then that is the right answer for you. More power to you!

Ben didn't tell Luke because he knew Luke were not ready for the burden of the truth.
One of the reasons they had the Wampa (the giant clawed yeti creature) attack Luke and scratch his face was because Mark Hammil was badly injured in a car accident just before they started filming and after some surgery to repair his face, he looked noticeably different.

Luke's failure in the Cave: Yoda sent Luke into the cave to test his self-control when he faced his own Dark Side - mostly his fear.
It is why Yoda told him that his weapons were not needed, but Luke didn't believe him. Luke's vision showed him what he could become: an agent of Evil just like Darth Vader.
Luke didn't recognize that the vision was false. He acted purely on his fear and anger.

That's why the path of the Jedi is the more difficult one, by far. As a 21-year practitioner of martial arts, leaving violence as a last resort when you feel endangered is much more difficult than most people who've never been in such a situation realize, and recognizing when it is, actually, your last resort is rarely straightforward. I know a lot of instances where someone who was initially victimized or threatened ended up getting charged with assault or murder because they didn't understand where "self-defense" ended.
That's one of the best reactions to "I am your father" I have seen! Love it!
Also: Vader is such a good character that when the actor who played his voice (James Earl Jones) was told Vader was Luke's father, even HE didn't believe it!

I don't know if anyone else has recommended it to you, but a youtube channel did a video called scene 38 reimagined, which is the part in a new hope where vader and kenobi face off for the last time. it is well worth your time to give it a watch.
For a sense of scale, the standard issue star destroyer is 1600 meters long, with a crew complement of around 37,000. The super star destroyer that is Vader's command ship is 19 km long with a crew of 280,000. The empire has a fixation with building oversized military equipment where part of the point is to try to project power and intimidation through sheer size.
