Animaniacs Theme sight-read by Tom Brier, piano

  • I suddenly realized before leaving my house on Saturday that Tom probably would have a blast playing the Animaniacs theme which I transcribed back in 1995 and finally created a score for earlier this year.
    So I put the sheet music in front of him that night, and this was his first read through it. Indeed he did have fun with it! He even said there's a lot of potential for ragging it up, so he might work on it some more...
    Don't know about you, but it sure made my day, year, decade... Two of my favorite things -- Tom's piano playing and Animaniacs -- all together!
    The "cheating" and "three hands" remarks are a reference to the fact that I put the flute/xylophone runs in the score as optional cue notes, which cannot be played by a single pianist without losing some of the melody. They're important parts of the tune, though, so I put them in there for the sake of multiple musicians or instruments who might want to play it.
    You can download my transcription that he is reading here: members.cruzio....
    or here:
    www.keeper1st.c...
    This was at the Sutter Creek Ice Cream Emporium in Sutter Creek, California.
    Sorry that the image is so dark. I was at the Lyon County Fly-In in Silver Springs, Nevada, earlier that day, and I had switched the camera to its automatic shutter speed setting which is ideal for outdoor use. I forgot to set it back to manual mode for indoor use (the camera's automatic mode always uses too fast of a shutter speed when indoors, resulting in a darker, grainier picture).
    If you haven't figured it out by now, this is the theme to the Warner Bros./Amblin cartoon series "Steven Spielberg Presents Animaniacs" which ran from 1993-1999 on the Fox and WB television networks. The music was composed by the late Richard Stone. (Yes, I know I misspelled the title in the Tags; I did it for those people who search for it but don't know how to spell it!)
    For the lyrics, see my Animaniacs Mega Lyrics File page: members.cruzio....

    @10INTM I met him when I attended a ragtime festival he was playing at in Watsonville, California, in the early 1990s. Seeing how he seemed to like obscure tunes, I brought him an obscure rag from 1906 or so that I had an original sheet music for. He sight-read it on the spot. The idea of videogame tunes was simply that the tunes are ragtime. I thought ragtime fans would be intrigued by this modern source of ragtime, and that game fans would like to hear them played by a ragtime musician.

    I know him through the ragtime scene in northern California. First saw him probably in 1991 or '92. Saw how he knew a lot about obscure pieces, so I showed him some old sheet music I had picked up at a library's sale. He sight-read them on the spot then asked if I could give him photocopies because he'd never seen them before. I showed him some rags that I had composed as well. He liked them so much that he re-scored them to be more readable and played them in his sets the following year.

    • @andrewbarrett1537
      @andrewbarrett1537 3 года назад +3

      @@happypiano4810 Actually, the professional ragtime pianists of olden days almost never played rags as written. If you did, you didn't have much chance at a career, as most rags were published simplified from what the composers intended (the Joplin, Lamb etc rags were exceptions to this rule, as were Texas Fox Trot and a few other serious ragtime works). If you played, for example, a two-finger rendition of "Wild Cherries Rag" or a popular song of the day, in a large venue on a professional gig, they'd run you out of the place and get somebody good. So most of the professional pianists in the big cities in the USA 100 years ago cultivated a semi-virtuosic style which could both overcome the difficulties of NO available amplification (when pianos started being amplified in clubs, pianists started playing differently, and greatly pared down their playing), and also please the crowds. You can still hear this manner of playing on their original audio recordings and hand-played piano rolls, some of which Tom also heard/knows.

    • @andrewbarrett1537
      @andrewbarrett1537 3 года назад +1

      @@happypiano4810 For an excellent example, here's the original extremely simple published sheet to "Wild Cherries Rag" from 1908:
      ruclips.net/video/YihyI6SqFTY/видео.html
      Now compare with Frank Banta's virtuosic arrangement from 1921. It doesn't sound that impressive on the disc due to this being an acoustic record with limited presence, but if you transcribe it, you see he's playing a great many low bass notes and tenths in the left hand, and frequent filled octaves etc in the right, for a rich, full sound. Also, his cleanly articulated, flawless runs he puts in are awe-inspiring to hear. Banta was house pianist for the Victor record company in the 1920s and one of the most flawless of all recorded ragtime pianists. I can't say I ever have heard him miss a note in any of his records, and I've heard probably over 100 of the thousand or two recordings he made: ruclips.net/video/sZBwAkzQeCo/видео.html

      After which do the conclusion with a I, I7, IV/VI, IVmin/VIb, C
      and finish with using two fingers (not chords) doing V, Vb, V, V#, VI, VIIb, VII, I.

    Its awesome when a musician can read a score like one would read a book aloud to children. Effortless.

    @mastergx1 That piano is almost 90 years old and sits in an ice cream parlor getting played every day. A tuner can only reduce how much it is out of tune.
