The Bavarian milking song is a FANTASTIC symbolism or metaphor, almost a synesthesia, in some way. Beautiful set, Bill.
His first TV was 'Is It Bill Bailey?' for the Beeb decades ago, then he had a small part in 'Spaced' s Simon Pegg's boss at the comic shop. Cosmic Jam was his first stand-up release followed by others and he's turned-up on QI quite a lot.
I have had the privilege of seeing Bill Bailey live at the concert hall in Perth Western Australian. He was absolutely brilliant! A fantastic multi instrumentalist, and utterly hilarious to boot. A wonderful night, never to be forgotten.
I disagree - this is exactly why we admire him, and the reason he became famous to begin with. His wildlife shows on the other hand... meh. Check out his early stuff, mate. ;) His appearance on Des O'Connor was quality - so stoned he could barely open his eyes. 😁
Tbh I knew he was into his music but I never knew to this extent. You can see how much he loves playing and talking about music here without the pressure to also make jokes at the same time.
tomroberts101 you say meh.. but he is a dedicated environmentalist, and loves wildlife. He's also a brilliantly gifted historian, and makes documentaries. Have you seen his documentary on Alfred Russel Wallace and the the history of Evolution? It was brilliant. So I think he's a gifted documentary maker and wildlife lover. I admire him for that.
I really like this video, but I don't understand why the questions are considered random. They seem thematic and thought-provoking. I think random questions would be more like, Bill, using music, answer the following: When was the last time you ate a grape? What does it feel like to hold a pencil? What are your thoughts on argon? The chosen questions were creative, relevant, and made a lot of sense.
Of course it's not random. Asked for the sound of 1985 he said "Take on Me." Next he was asked for Tchaikovsky's version of "Take on Me." No. Not random at all.
There's just something about Bill Bailey. He just has IT. Musician, comedian, knowledgeable but carries his intelligence and education lightly. The kind of man you'd love to spend an evening with, over a few after-dinner drinks, having a wide-ranging discussion about myriad subjects.
The best hold music I heard was not a piece of music at all, it was actually an audioplay recorded specifically for the theatre I was calling. So you called them and you would hear: "But professor, the corpse was found in the middle of the empty pool, how could the victim have ended up there?" - "Well, the pool could have been filled at the time he dropped into it." - "But wouldn't he have drowned rather than have died from a crushed skull if that was the case?" - "Maybe, but it could be that the pool was filled with something else instead, for example with honey, in that case he would be..." - "Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, what can I do for you today?" - ".......what the hell was that?" - "Oh, you mean the hold recording? That was an audioplay we commissioned. Want me to switch you back to it?" - "No, but... that's a GREAT idea..." - "Yeah, we know. Our records show that people call at 3am just to be able to listen to the rest..."
The most annoying thing, is guys like Bill (and I've been fortunate enough to know a couple in my time) also make playing the guitar, banjo, flute, bass etc etc effortless! It's infuriating.
