One thing that's insane about this plane and the larger C-5 is that they have so much power that even fully loaded they can go almost vertical, and can take off in such a short amount of time for being a large plane
@@denmister100 Yeah I can understand that for sure but I hate flying so the closer I am to landing the happier I am. I remember the flight crew briefed us on the landing so we didn't think we were crashing and thank God they did lol.
i live in north carolina, by MCAS, which is just a Marine Corps air base, you see C-17s and stuff all the time, so I was impressed to see such a good looking C-17, for ahem * f r e e *
I worked for the telephone company at McDonnell Douglas in Long Beach where the C-17 was developed. I remember going into the hanger where they did testing on the wings and they snapped them. They had hydraulics attached at many points on the wing and pulled them upwards to simulate the weight that would be on them. They had to completely redesign them to fix that issue. We had a microwave shot at the top of that hangar building and you don't realize how high that tail is until you are above it over 50ft on the stair case just to the side of the aircraft. On one of the earliest test flight they did a 380K lbs. takeoff in 1200 feet. That's less than a quarter mile folks. It's a great aircraft but, I think it must have been budget overrun that ultimately killed it.
I see C-17s all time here in South Carolina. I live several miles from Joint Base Charleston, the main C-17 hub, so they fly by my house on a daily basis.
