How do you charge the sword? I picked it up & I tried a charge attack with no change. Please help I don't wanna have to attempt to beat this boss without it.
I got him down to 30% using a normal two handed before I screwed up a roll and died. I figured there was something wrong since it was taking so long and found this. Thanks.
For anyone still having problem with Yhorm, charge up ur stormruler before fight(if u die) and then just release attack. It will stun him, when he is gets on his knees, charge it up again, it can stay charged even if u dont attack, attack him again, he will be stunned again, just do this and he will die even faster

@Franceskop 23 well Im 10 months late but Im gonna write this anyway in case someone else needs to know. You need to hold shift and right click untill your sword starts glowing (this can take like 5-7 seconds) and then just release the attack with a left click

I had no idea how to use it cause I was to frustrated after an hour, then I found this video. Even though it made the fight shorter, it I was still a struggle as he is very fast and far reaching. 5 hits with it charged and your good. You cannot pass to the Grand Archives without beating Yorm.

When I was dying, I noticed an item to pick near his throne. It was strange to me, that they put an item like that, so my second run to boss was to obtain that item. Got the sword, homeward to firelink. I read the description and understood what I had to do. Third run, let the boss come, I pressed R2 and R1 and.... nothing. I was like WTF?: Tried couple of times, saw that it doesn't do shit to him, so homeward again. Guess what I was doing wrong? I had no idea you could charge that storm attack...

I just fought and beat him first try, and in my mind I was thinking that I should probably grab that item at his throne, ‘cause usually items are only in bossrooms if they’re gimmick bosses, but I decided not to and fought him with my +3 Vordt Great Hammer. Was a pretty fun fight albeit kinda long since I’m pretty sure he’s immune to frostbite
I fought him a minute ago first try with Siegward, usually i wanna solo the bosses but i just wanted to honor Siegward because of the cutscenes ive been seeing I had no idea there was an item you can get and Siegward did most of the damage while i was just spamming R1 on his ass

He meant, that he is the hardest, when you hit it with normal weapons. With the ruler, i killed him in 1:37..... With Black Blade it took 11 minutes man.....
I use smough great hammer to fight this guy. The boss movement's pattern is easy to grasp compare to other boss for me, but took me such a long time to beat this guy.

What was confusing me was the time to charge the weapon. I was like, "I'm charging it and it's doing nothing." If only I had actually charged it LONGER. I'm so stupid man. 😂
I walked in on him for the first time. His attacks where so easy to dodge but I was doing basically no Damage. I kept on dodging and getting hit every now and then and I realized that there must be something to this. My sister was in the room so I asked her to take my phone and look up how to defeat him. She turned this on and I kept on dodging until you said to equip the weapon. I couldn’t find it for a bit and got hit, but in the end I equipped it and the boss was insanely easy. Thank you. Now I can say I beat him first try. I guess that’s not much of an accomplishment, though.
Good job! I just kept swinging with the Storm Ruler till it broke on me. Then I took out my Dark Sword and swung at him for 30 minutes till he fell over and I cheered! Then found you could five shot him with the thing all charged up.

OK, here I am in 2023 and there's NO WAY it plays out like this anymore. Firstly, stormruler is far more temperamental - seems to take longer to charge, misses more frequently than it hits despite being locked on. Yhorm has more attacks - an AOE, which stuns you and nullifies stormruler charge; flame buff for his sword which has an AOE; a sweeping lateral sword swipe which takes you out if you stay near his feet, as the above video advises you to; most of his hits will either one-shot you or stunlock you while he swings again and takes you out. Also - Yhorm is FAST - I try to run to create distance to charge stormruler, he catches me easily and one-shots me. Anyone have ANY idea how to kill this boss in ver 1.15?

its not cheating, it's intended to teach players to read info about what they loot and use it against enemies whilst keeping the lore. its as if you found a legendary sword. which you did.
Dude I've played only 2 from soft games ds1 and elden ring and decided to try this one and been doing blind playthrough and have only struggled with Aldrich and this mf I did not know it was this easy 🤯
So the boss fight is near impossible without the stormbreaker. I was using Ithrillyn straigh sword and getting nowhere. Weird cheese the developers offer for an otherwise unfun and difficult boss. Beat it first try with the sword without any effort at all because that charge attack is unbelievably OP
I hate this boss because there's no ingame hints or anything that even say anything about storm ruler, and you wouldn't normally be rushing in to grab an item way in the back of the boss room because you're focusing on the boss. I shouldn't have to look up the weaknesses for bosses online, there should be hints ingame.

i think im over leveled cuz my astoras claymore does 250 dmg per hit
