Thank you! I will be doing an update soon on what’s been growing on in my garden...including buds and blooms. Please stay safe and mentally sound as well. Happy growing!
My big D. nobile makes so many keikis that all of my friends have them and now I am going to have to start binning them! I have never tried the second method but might do with another nobile that doesn't keiki too much. So funny that you left the bag in the sun and it triggered propagation! Thank you :D
I know this is old, but was very helpful for me! I have one with a couple of canes and I'm new to dendrobiums....glad I didn't cut those canes off! They are still green so now I will talk to it and tell it to grow babies!! LOL
I haven't had much luck with re potting the keikis, maybe because I didn't use the sphagnum moss like you do. But, I have cut the canes, laid them across another pot with growing medium in it, and bingo, the roots grow down into the pot, if I need to, i add a little more orchid bark. The cane feeds the new plants until its completely dried out and I just remove it easily. If there is more than one keiki I let them grow until I am sure that they will survive and then re-pot. Works every time.
Thank you for watching and yes it's amazing what these orchid creatures can do...as a matter of fact...my next door neighbor gave me a dendrobium cane that had not roots...I didn't think that it would survive even though she swore to me that it would...so I decided to entertain her and potted her up and put it to the side by my bush...with the rains and the winds it knocked the orchid down under the bush and I forgot about it...I just recently found it again completely out of the pot and lying on the ground...would you believe that a keiki managed to grow from the cane...again amazing what these creatures can do...and indeed they never seem to amaze me! :)
Thanks, Oh how are your vandas doing after that terrible freeze that almost killed them. Did they recuperate well? I'm scared to put mine out, because of the frost here in Florida. I keep mine indoors at all times ; )
Nice video! I just got starting to grow Orchids lol. I live in hawaii and i use black volcano cinders as media like our local nursery use they said its the best. I like your videos im learning many things. Thank you!
Thanks so much for watching all the way from Hawaii and I am happy to be able to share the information. I have never used volcano cinders as media, but it does sound quite interesting. Please be sure to let me know how it works for you. I will be on the lookout for volcano cinders and if I find it, I may also experiment with it for my orchids and other plants. I am sure it has great benefits. Wishing you the absolute best in your plant growing adventures! HAPPY GROWING!
@@PictureMaria1 Thank you so much!! I seen some black or red cinders for sale on ebay. I'm using black color cinders almost all of the orchids and anthurium nurserys using here. I was thinking of selling cinders too on ebay that guy selling good LOL. My name is Dean I'll check out all your videos.
You may not believe it . I found out that our dendrobium nobile is the hardiest tropical orchids. It’s been growing mounted on a huge trunk of a Banksia Rose enduring the winter of Redding , California for more than 5 years. We have already reproduced about 5 separate plants. By the way it can also endure the 3 digit summer temperatures of Redding.
Yes I agree! Many of our orchids are actually a lot hardier than what most give them credit for. I keep mine outdoors all year long and they never cease to amaze me with their ability to grow and thrive. One of the reasons why I love them so much! Congratulations with how well yours has been doing and continue the awesome work! Thanks for watching and HAPPY GROWING!
Lol no wonder knife didn’t cut the first kiekei...she had knife blade up! Couldn’t believe she didn’t realize it. Good information on transplanting them.
Hi I have bits and pcs. of dendrobium and wishing them to flowers. thank you for your tutorial. am a new friend here. Let's grow together with our flowers.
AWWWWWWW THANKS SO MUCH!!! :) I am so happy that you would join me on my orchid adventures! Kumusta ka? Sana mabute!!! Much love to you from Florida! I have a few species orchids that thrive naturally grow in the Philippines....I do treasure them. What kinds do you have? Again I thank you for watching and Mabuhay Philippines! HAPPY GROWING!!! :)
I wish i lived in a better climate. Always sunny there for you lol Anyways i was just thinking you might have taken them off too early they should be fine though. But i have learned a great amount about keikies and a good rule is to let them flower once before removing them . That way you know they have a wonderful chance at living if they can give up the energy to flower they can then be taken off the mother plant Happy growing to you!
Thanks for the concern but they will be just fine...this is how I do many of my orchids and they do quite well for me..I have never had a problem...this is actually the perfect size to remove them...just as long as they have enough roots and leaves to sustain themselves...and if you think about it in order for the Nobiles to bloom they have to be a full mature canes...can you imagine a bunch of full sized canes on your original canes...it would be quite a mess and a tedious task with all sorts of roots and canes every which way...you would risk the canes and roots constantly breaking and you would also have to constantly spray all of the aireal roots as well...so it wouldn't be feasible and could prove to be harmful for the plant.
....and that's fine to voice your thoughts...I was just speaking facts of what I have done with mine and what would happen if you wait until they become full grown, waiting a year before you take them off...just not feasible for some orchids, that's all...no offense taken here...did you get offended?
PictureMaria1 nope ! But for some people that dont live in Florida isnt not such a problem . Things tend to have problems them the weater is difficult ;)
Yes we do have beautiful weather here in FL...but we have our share of battles too...we are also considered the Hurricane State...so we also endure lots of rain, high winds and some pretty cruel storms...so we here in FL also must take some precaution with harsh weather conditions....and because I keep mine outdoors I also face the threat of nasty critters that love to feed on them...so we all face our struggles the best way we can...and know that we are doing the most we can for our beloved orchids that bring us so much joy. HAPPY GROWING to you as well. :)
6:40 I give my Dend. Nobile and Dend. Kingianum Berry Oda 1/10 6+6+6 orchid fertilizer that is set to 1 part per 4 parts water. They have grown much faster than the other keikis that I have. You can give them a very weak fertilizer to give them a head start if you wish.

Thank you! I am a neglectful orchid mom. I accidentally severed some canes and those are producing keikis. I just put those canes in the boots of my sabal palms (Coastal Central FL) and they're making keikis. Should I just leave them where they are since they seem happy?
What's the name of that stuff you put inside the pot? Does the dendrobium need only that or also a specific soil? What about the little balls of clay and little piece of pine bark? Thanks for your beautiful and useful video. Ciao from Italy

I do believe it would be okay to use moss from the woods...if you are concerned about sanitization you can spray it down with peroxide to disinfect it...and yes I have done many propagations on many varieties of orchids. I have majority of them on my propagation play list.
You can...but you would have to water more often...and especially if you use charcoal...you would have to water very often. The roots are very sensitive at this point and can quickly wither away before your eyes... but the same goes for the moss as well...they can easily rot out if you water too much. The main thing is keeping a close eye and making sure they receive good water...but not too much...they should always be allowed to dry slightly (but not for very long) before watering again. I know it sounds tricky...but after you've tried raising up a couple of them, you will find what works out best in your area...and before you know it, you will be a pro. Hi Maria! I want to ask - can I use the same propagation method for propagating dendrobium phalaenpsis? I once bought it from a discount and it didn't have any roots and now - a full year have past - she lost all of her leaves, produced no roots whatsoever and tried put out 3 flower spikes, but each failed to produce any flowers. I don't think she's going to put out any keikis or new roots, so can I use this propagation method to encourage keiki's growth on old canes? P.S. she has one big mother cane and two small canes.
Hi, I was trying to separate the Keiki but I broke the keiki, so now the keiki has no root. What should I do ? Will the keiki survive ? It is my first dendrobium and my first time to separate the keiki. Hope you can help ! Thank you

Should I water them?
Finally how to save my orchid that has only 2 little keikes left. ! Thanks!
hi my dear, advice: cut the keikis with a portion of the cane, not removing the me ik is alone, because they are very small to endure the wound
That is a good suggestion...although mine did just fine...but better safe than sorry. Thanks!
Ihave tryed this with my cattaleya canes waiting to see if i get the same results will let you know how it goes

Yes this can work for them too.
Hi. My Dendrobium is growing nicely and there is a few stems. I was thinking to propagate it by division. Would the division damage the roots? Thanks.
Do I have to use sphagnum moss
No you don’t but I have found when they are smaller they do better with water retentive media.
