I think the greatest example of this show's perspective on portraying magical effects is the sound of a huge door creaking ominously open whenever they summon the Gentleman. Nothing is seen...but everything is implied.

Such marvellous narrative, characters and detailing in historical feel. There's so much more to say though...

I wish it was true! I thought the same thing when I watched Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell...but alas, I doubt that's going to be the case.

Love it, love the use of subtle magic. I barely watch TV any more, it's all repeats, soaps and game shows and has been for a long time. Money is too important in this world

BBC did about as well as could be expected adapting this massive book. Well done, old chaps!

I loved the series but am a bit confused on the ending. So I'm looking forward to reading the book now. Loved all the choice of actors. Been keeping an eye out on Eddie's career awhile now. Now I have many more to keep up with.

22:23 'It's quite rare, in my experience, to be allowed room to actually bring all of what you can do. And that's what we got. And that's really...rare.' The unspoken can we please work together again is the best take away. Production values that stand the test of time in the best way possible.

I read this when it first came out, and loved it then.... I was waiting for it but I wasn't 100% satisfied with episode 1, it seemed to brush over the magic that made book, while understandable since it is tv, it went thru things without giving meaning/importance or charm like the statue scene, it should have been longer, basically the importance of each step was well summed up for tv. I just felt the first episode needed to be drawn out more, the parts they did use from the book did cross over well, but sadly the book details of event were lost. I was hoping this would be a slow paced series, or one that focused on maybe a portion of the book. Seven episode that will rush through the charm... You just don't get to love or feel for the characters, the whole death scene of the father and the servant lost its purpose....there are stories within stories here that are missing, that would have made each episode grand, and only show one grand magic scene in each episode. Its just my opinion on watching the first episode.

If you ever have writer, Peter Harness, on a panel again, I suggest he be placed on an end seat. Turning his back on the actors was a bit rude. It actually looked as if he can't stand being near them! Bertie Carvel did well trying to look around Harness without being annoyed. If that was acting, well done!😁 Oh, the body language .
