During the first week of the game’s release I somehow sank enough time into the game to be the #1 worldwide rank for simple mode, and I still find myself going back to play from time to time. The gameplay still feels amazing and is undeniably one of the best Mario sports games to date, really looking forward to what is next for Mario tennis one day and really hoping for a new Mario baseball created with this much care

Pretty much did the same as you during that first month. Went on to be 6th ranked in simple mode too.
I even had a match against you after telling myself I'd just do a quickie one, not knowing in the moment I was playing the number 1 player at the time hahaha.

I stopped putting time into Aces when they added the option to split Zone Shot and Zone Speed onto separate buttons. Since Zone Speed is so useful to use just a little bit of gauge, you could bait a Zone Shot by aiming directly at your opponent and forcing them to use up a lot of meter. After the button split, the rallies just became way too long, so much so that they had to reduce the number of games played to win a match online.
    Rest in peace, Zone Traps.

    • @leonro
      @leonro 8 месяцев назад +5

This one has great mechanics, but it still suffers from the more sanitised way most modern Nintendo sports games are now. Variety is quite lacking because of how barebones they are.
The other new sports games also don't have any improvements in the mechanics, which is why there's such a big gap between them - but it's still far from what it could have been if the content was more like the gamecube one, for example.

    • @audoodle9963

idk as a kid who grew up with the GameCube one it just ended up being playing tournaments over and over and sometimes playing the mini games. Still playing to this day with a buddy and we’ve recently started to get the hang of blocks. Didn’t feel fair that when I blocked their special they could easily smack the ball to other side of the court… after that game I realized I still haven’t been utilizing another pillar to the gameplay mechanics- slowing down time with meter. That realization made me appreciate the game and its gameplay depth so much more!

Mario Tennis Aces. I hear you like this game, Jon.
Upon buying it on release, I enjoyed it. More than five years later? I still like it.
The refined tennis features helps make this game shine. It is fun to manage the use of your gauge and perform tricky shots. I also like how everyone has a unique Power Shot.
One thing that I like about Aces is its general aesthetic. Each character has a defined color, and the courses all are easy on the eyes. I also like seeing their emblem pop up each time a point is scored.
At first, I didn't know how to feel with Mario wearing a full tennis outfit. After playing the game, I quite like it. You bring up a fair point in that this is an example of Nintendo allowing Mario to be more of a fleshed out character rather than a simple company mascot. I still like his overalls though.
I don't think that anybody can argue about the roster. 30 distinct characters in the final game is beyond impressive. Granted, half of them were part of free updates, but I can overlook it. I like seeing Chain Chomp and Pauline newly playable, and it's great to have Birdo, Diddy Kong, and Petey Piranha return with HD models. It's fantastic.
Based on all that, I think that Mario Tennis Aces will likely age the best of the Mario sports on Switch. I'm more of a Mario Golf: Super Rush fan, but Tennis holds up strong. It kinda helps that this game came out in 2018, so it had more time to gain a redemption arc.
Good video, Jon. I like hearing your voice...🤗

I've played a lot of this game over the past month, and at first I had a LOT of trouble finding any matches, and that's still kind of true. (I'm European btw). I think because the game is so old, most of the remaining players on it have gotten really good and so for newer/lower level players there aren't as much opponents to find. I've gone from D to B rank so far and i do find more opponents now but not usually as quickly as in the video.

Id definitely play it more often if i had friends to play it with. randoms online can be fun, but dealing with bad connections, or long wait times to actually find another player kills the excitement to play for me. I'm currently replaying Aces at the moment, but yeah, this is legit the inly good Mario sports game in the modern era because it now only feels good to play 5 years later, but the free updates it had were handled miles better than anything Super Rush and Battle League did. The single player mode is indead the worst outing becaude its just a glorified mission mode with no cutscenes and weird voice clips they use from a decade old.
All in all, Mario Tennis Aces is legit still a pretty soild game for thr Switch, and it makes me a little disappointed that Mario Sports game on the Switch peak with this, but kinda went on a downard spiral to mid following it.

I was looking through my most played Switch games and was somewhat surprised to see this one near the top of my list, with well over 100 hours logged. While the single player mode was fairly mediocre, the actual tennis mechanics are by far the best the series has ever had, and the online mode is competitive and addicting.

Im happy to see people enjoying this game but for me still deserve the frak this game receive then and now. For all the complains this game receive the only "fix" was increase the character rooster. But seeing people giving this game some love even today gives me hope to Nintendo still making mario sports and improving

Something I'm not a fan of in this game is the music, I know it's been the same composer for a while but throughout the whole game I can't tell the difference between going from menu music to gameplay music to pause music etc.

by the way, only mario sport title that was the 2nd in HD. if all other mario sport titles are this good on their second try, not sure many will complain. (like they did for golf and soccer)

The Mario Sports games this generation are interesting because Camelot and Nintendo have practically perfected the gameplay mechanics of each of the sports, especially tennis.
However, the presentation quality of each of these games are severely lacking, especially Mario Strikers Battle League which feels like a watered-down version of the series, especially when compared to the edgier, cooler, crazier visuals and tone set by Mario Strikers Charged.
The gameplay itself is fine, but the potential of where to take these sports games remains high while we're constantly being underwhelmed by the amount of available content within the games themselves.

This is the best Mario sport game on switch, but it’s not better than sluggers on the Wii

It at least has gameplay vs the open world crap that is constantly released.

I love Mario Tennis aces, I like to compare it to the new strikers game.
Strikers core gameplay is amazing, but the lack of that " ko mechanic" like the racket breaking make it so much more boring you know that the only way to finish the game is to wait for the timer to stop it's awful.
If it had been given a proper story mode, a similar roaster and a ko mechanic it would have been a masterpiece.
Mario tennis aces is really the gold standard

It’s got the best gameplay of any Mario Sports game and it’s not close. Great character roster, fun adventure mode, and some good side modes to boot. If you lump it with Super Rush or Battle League you have either not played it, dropped it after the first month, or are lying to yourself.

@PkKirby I think super rush is more enjoyable from a casual standpoint. It’s controls are easier to understand and my friends love playing with the motion controls. I agree with you though the depth of gameplay here is great and can lead to some awesome rallies

@@MischievousMike Casually I can agree with that statement. However, Super Rush did remove the depth from the previous titles that a lot of fans like myself enjoyed. It also did a much worse job spreading out content.

@@PkKirby yeah they definitely shouldn’t have removed the old power meter from previous golf games, it was always so satisfying to hit your shot with perfect timing

I don't like that game because of the return shots, I found them really hard to pull off and I kept forgetting which button combination I was meant to press, I liked the older Mario Tennis games because I found it easier to control.
