I've said it before but Color Splash is basically this game done right. Nearly every legitimate gripe I could come up with for Sticker Star was solved by Color Splash. The issues with the combat are minimal and I'd say could even be solved with just a few minor numerical tweaks. Everything else is outstanding barring the story and even the story is just kinda "meh". Out of all the Wii U games to find new life on Switch, I honestly think this should be one of them.

    • @Space-ious
      @Space-ious Год назад +6

The biggest issue I have is that boss fights boil down to “don’t have the specific thing card that you had no indication you needed to bring? Too bad get insta-killed”. It’s even worse how they only pull it out near the end of the fight, meaning you do the entire fight only to be handed an unavoidable L if you aren’t prepared

    • @SwordfighterRed
      @SwordfighterRed Год назад +2

@@Space-ious Color Splash is still infinitely better about that than Sticker Star. They deliberately put whatever necessary Thing in the player's path somehow, even if by text drop, and also have the Port Prisma Toad who gives you hints.
But I liked the approach that Sticker Star had, kinda, where you could muscle through a fight if necessary, even if Kersti fusses at you for it. Just, like so much of Sticker Star, it's not executed the best.

    13:31 Holy crap...
20:24 I also dig this part of the credits theme where it transitions into Wiggler's theme
Anyways, Sticker Star! Definitely can't deny how many low points it has, but also can't deny what less-low points it does have. I still stand by my opinion that Kamek's battle theme is an absolute bop, in complete contrast to the actual battle.

Here's what Thing stickers to use in the 1st portion of the Bowser Battle.
Phase 1: Tape or Stapler. If not used, enemies will keep coming out of the panels to replace the fallen enemies with.
Phase 2: any hammer sticker to knock the whomp down with then any cutting Thing sticker. If not used, you'd only be able to target the whomp until it is defeated. The whomp only takes 1 damage with each hit if it isn't knocked down. When it's down, jump stickers deal normal damage. A cutting Thing sticker takes it out in 1 hit if it's down.
Phase 3: AC, Fridge, or Shaved Ice, followed by any blowing Thing sticker. If not used, Bowser will rain the lava bubbles down on you. You can skip using a blowing sticker as long as you freeze the lava bubbles then clear this phase within 3 turns after freezing them. Bowser's attack fails if the lava bubbles are frozen.
Phase 4: a tail sticker is all you need, though I think any kind of batting Thing sticker works too. Just knock back the chomp once with the tail and the battle ends. Nothing can damage the chomp.
Except for the 4th phase, each phase only ends once Bowser's HP has dropped low enough and he attacks. The game prevents you from bringing his HP below 10 in the 1st portion(You'd just get coins if you damage him once his remaining HP is 10.) His max HP drops by 50 after each phase, but he regains 99 HP at the start of the next phase.
And I should note, Bowser is a spiked enemy, so normal jump stickers, including infinijump and clone jump will cause you to get hurt unless you use a super boot sticker. His arms in the final battle aren't spiked enemies, but his head is a spiked enemy. If his arms get damaged enough, they break off and can no longer be targeted.

... While SPM is my favorite of the bunch, I will agree: it's my favorite, after all, for the reasons you listed. And those reasons certainly make a second take not as fun as the first.
But enough of that - and I'd rather not start an argument with someone I often agree with - you pretty much said it (again) for this game. Yeah, it's got... problems. But it also has a good bit going for it. It's clear they had an idea on where to take Paper Mario after the... Toad Clause, or whatever it was that snuffed out the majority of more unique characters. The papery style of the world is honestly charming, and the 3DS's 3D did a really good job on that front: everything is properly flat, but in a 3D space. (And how they translated a lot of elements into papery bits was really cleverly done, too, like the Cardboard Coins and the foil-wrapping for shimmering power.) What came next for Paper Mario very much was learnt from the passes and fails of this, and while it's been a slow climb, it's been one full of promise.
It's... got a charm. The music is great (still one of my top world map melodies, right next to DKCR), and it's something that's engaging /just enough/ to take a look at when nothing else in your 3DS library feels entertaining that day. It's fun to waggle the 3DS around and see the foil on the bottom screen shimmer, and you can really just sit in a stage and vibe to the music. (And... weirdly well done ambient sounds.)
The bad points, too - well, those have been discussed to hell and back. But it's certainly not abysmal as some would put it, or a herald of Changing Times. (THAT, I will agree, was SPM's whole deal). It's somewhere neatly in the middle. Not terrible, but not amazing. Weirdly enough, one for Goldilocks: just... right. A pleasantly toned "meh".
Well done on another playthrough - as I've also said before, your commentary (and owls) continue to be a great way to make watching a playthrough very entertaining, even if it's a particularly boring segment or stage. I suppose with ToTK, many of us won't be seeing the light of day (and just in time! I'm graduating soon, and it'll be the perfect window to have one last binging summer vacation before full-time employment), so... godspeed, with whatever awaits you there.
I suppose this might mean we don't see each other for a little while, so until then: thank you for the Video Game Commentary!
    ...
... And on a final, final note: the Whomp with the scissor markings on the backside instead of the usual bandage was actually really clever. Shame a Paper Whomp only appears in this one particular instance in this one particular game, and nowhere else since.

prob the most interesting part about the final battle vs bowser's giant form is if you intentionally take long enough and/or have bowser's hp low enough
Bowser will start attacking about.. somewhere between 3-5 times per turn max.
starting with 2 first, then it keeps going up.
granted its been a really long time since I played sticker star. but I deff know for a fact Bowser attacks more than one time the longer the fight goes on. around 3-5 times max when you reach that point.
this, combined with if mario gets crumpled by Bowser's slam attacks(leave the hands alive), makes him quite literally the most damaging boss/enemy in the game because of the fact he gets more turns over time-
to the point Bowser just wins once mario's crumpled without good rng on his attacks
its actually really fun to mess around with that gets more turns mechanic of Bowser's,
cuz normally almost no one would ever see it-

1:51 That intro caught me off guard on my first playthrough.
2:48 Messy memory probably, but didn’t it say Up instead of Here in the US version?
3:16 Not unless you massively prepare.
3:24 Any binding one will also work.
4:28 No, he’s spiky in the US version as well. Been spiky since Super
5:04 I believe it has to be specifically hammers. Which is why the Eekhammer works well.
5:26 Fun fact: If you do the Scissor version sticker on the Whomp as a new turn, it will actually hurt both the Whomp and Bowser.
    6:02 Yes.
    6:35 Crumple can prevent escaping.
7:33 Any Freezing and Wind blowing Thing will work, just remember to do them in that order.
8:58 Weird, normally he swings the Chomp around and then you try to hit it back.
11:09 So you apparently either do 5 damage or wait 2 turns to realize that no matter what you do, Bowser will only ever take 1 HP from all attacks.
11:35 Sorry, but if you use Infinijumps, you will only be taking away 200 HP because after 100 HP, each arm breaks and Bowser’s main head is spiky. Time them well and you can actually do 398 damage though.
13:37 So fun fact: If you still don’t manage to kill Bowser, you will still have all 5 slots to put stickers onto.
Oh yeah almost forgot. During Bowser’s part 2 introduction, you can actually see Peach’s chain drop which is how we’re able to reach her now.
Honestly, the downfall had to be the first 2 games and Super onward made things better.

8:17 Okay, I never knew you could do that, awesome.
Oh boy… this is gonna be a long one. So Sticker Star, definitely not a hot take to say that this game is not a masterpiece. However, it has more going for it that it may appear. Let’s get the elephant out of the room, yeah the atmosphere sucks. Like having all NPCs being Toads is already bad enough, but the whole world is in the weird spot that Galaxy 2 is, slightly varied enough so that it barely feels more alive than your average NSMB, but it kinda lacks some soul, it has some mildly unique (for a Mario game) setups, like a jungle temple, a mansion in the mountain, a sphynx, but kinda generic when compared to anything else.
Writing can be a bit iffy. I think the statement that modern PM writing is nothing more than paper jokes is absolute bollocks which can be disproven by just playing the game, however, it’s still kind of odd, the main issue is that there’s barely any dialogue, since there’s barely any NPCs, kinda says a lot when Bowser, the guy that usually carries the comedy in Mario media has 0 lines (absolutely boneheaded decision).
Combat is alright, definitely not the abomination people say it is. As I said, it rewards players for killing a lot of enemies with a lot of coins, which is a decent enough reward, does help on keeping the player from being forced to fight stuff in fear of being underleveled, and gives a relevant enough reward, since it gives you enough so that even if you replace the ones you use, it’s still a net gain. The bosses kinda suck though, pretty much underwhelming once you neuter them with the thing you require, which brings me to my next point.
This game is a nightmare for blind players. The thing is, it’s not hard guessing what thing to bring, but the thing is, that is only after you are at the roadblock where you need it, which means you may need to backtrack for the thing which is just ugh… not an issue in repeat playthroughs, but that is a factor that must absolutely be considered.
The levels are by far the best part of the game, the level by level format works perfectly for a 3ds game, where people play in short bursts. It also lets an idea be contained and polished to the best it can reach. It kinda pales compared to CS and TOK (this will be relevant), but it’s still good. And even if it has some stinkers (2-3) here and there, it’s nothing compared to the level off ASS that TTYD and SPM reached on average. I would rather complete 2-3 10 times before playing TTYD chapter 4 ever again.
Overall, this is a… decent enough game, far from the worst this series has to offer. Speaking of the worst, I still stand by my opinion that this game is unironically better than TTYD. Sure, TTYD has an actual plot, actual characters, an actual setting, and a more complex combat system, but what really matters at the end in a game is well… the gameplay, and as earlier said, TTYD sucks balls at level and event design (to the point that the enemy placement and frequency genuinely kills the combat for me, which is meant to be the game’s strong point), and such a downgrade from 64 it’s not even funny, let’s not even talk about SPM.
Overall I feel both of these games get worse every time I replay them, and stand for me as some incredibly mediocre experiences, and while I would never call Sticker Star “good” per say I definitely have more fun playing that than it’s two predecessors combined (doesn’t hold a candle to stuff like 64 or Bug Fables of course, but that goes without saying). I wouldn’t say it redeemed the franchise, but it stopped the tendency of each game being worse than the other, which is nice I guess.
Ironically, if this game pales to something, it’s to its sequel Color Splash. Game is amazing and it fixes nearly every issue the game has (mainly combat, such as the battle roulette, number of cards you can use in your turn, resource management, etcetera), has a decent attempt at a plot (I would say on par with 64’s plot, which is very simple as well) and while there’s still Toad overload, at least it tries to vary by having Bowser’s Minions as NPCs. But like, it makes sense for CS to overshadow the original, it’s kind of what a sequel is meant to do, fix the issues the first game has.
This has been a very long comment, but I think it is pretty much anything I have to say on the game. As someone that has 0 attachment to the classic formula as a whole… yeah this game is like a… 7/10. 7.5 if we’re being generous. I hope you enjoy Tears of the Kingdom, I’m still iffy on that game myself.

I don't think the game's that bad myself. It misses the mark and is flawed yes. But it's still Paper Mario at the end of the day and it has it's charming moments. Most of my gripes with this game just come from cosmetic issues. Lack of character variety, absence of story, bare bone set pieces that don't feel out of place from any other Mario game making me think they were just playing it safe. Things like that. But like I said for it's flaws it's still good. The battle system actually is ENGAGING. There is strategy to it. Each fight is like a puzzle. Figuring out the enemy or boss' weakness and exploiting it to figure out the most efficient way to finish off your foe with wasting the least amount of items. This is good. So what's the problem? The problem is that there's no incentive to fighting unless the enemies are in your way because of the lack of experience. You instead grow stronger by gathering HP Up Hearts rather then leveling up. Because of this PMSS often puts enemies in position where they will throw ranged projectiles to damage you interrupting you while trying to do something, run up to you and ambush you, put you in tight spaces where it's impossible to avoid them, and things like that. Other times though you are just recommended to run around enemies completely as opposed to fighting them such as in wide open areas. It's sad really that on paper (Heh heh) the battle system CAN in theory work. It's just that it is flawed in execution. I think that had the game incentivized battles more with some sort of EXP system, nerfed thing items just a tad so bosses can feel still like bosses and less of a curbstomp despite using said weaknesses against them and more hints to said weaknesses for enemies and bosses the battle system could be great. I do see an enjoyable battle system in PMSS as it makes use of resource management and makes players think and plan their moves accordingly. In Sticker Star you are never fighting enemies for EXP. You are fighting them just because they happen to be in your way which is a shame. The idea of growing stronger in an RPG by defeating your foes has always been staple and part of that incentive is a fun to use battle system to make fights enjoyable.

I agree, overall. At its best, battles in Sticker Star and Color Splash are a quick, puzzle-type affair and very brisk. Really, I think what they should have done is more like the Chain Chomp battles in World 5, where there's one that you have to put to sleep, escape, pound its stake down, engage in battle again and make it attack to destroy an obstacle. Forced damage aside, that was actually very cool.
I also like how they put a lot more emphasis on exploring the world and finding paths with your hammer and the like, especially with the HP-Up Hearts and how they're hidden. I almost wish there was more effort put into the Thing system or placement that would allow a player to get a similar item earlier or something and enable different paths throughout the game. There's already an almost burgeoning non-linearity to Sticker Star, it should have been capitalized on!
It's just sad, to me, because I do see something that could make for a REALLY good game in Sticker Star, but it's like they only went halfway (and that's probably due to time/budget constraints, at least).

A lukewarm final boss for a lukewarm game, it's like poetry I think! But yeah, the game really isn't THAT bad; I don't like it, but to call it terrible is perhaps somewhat disingenuous. Having finished this game for the first time last year, I was very underwhelmed by it. It was a watered down version of the first two Paper Mario games where the battles were more shallow with very weak incentives, the creativity and atmosphere took a step down, the writing was less frequent and more stilted, and the game design comes across as more antagonistic than compelling.
I also recognize its good qualities: the presentation is superb, the level design is generally more fleshed out than TTYD and SPM, and in rare moments the game can be quite charming. But I could also say that for Color Splash and The Origami King later, having many of those same qualities while also vastly improving on the experience with much better writing, far more compelling maps, and better pacing. The battles still kind of suck, but hey at least you can mostly ignore them and appreciate everything else about those games.
I think regarding SPM VS Sticker Star, I could give credit to the latter game for having more solid level design. But personally, I would still rather replay SPM over it because as sloppy and underdeveloped as that game can be, I don't find it as cumbersome to play through. While it sure has lowpoints, I feel the experience is more consistent than how indecisive Sticker Star is of either being a decent enough adventure game or a mediocre RPG. And what SPM definitely has over Sticker Star is that there's nothing quite like it; it's such a strange concoction of ideas, a weirdly loaded plot, and a distinctive feel that even as someone that recognizes how flawed it really is, I forever appreciate it as unique experience that's worth experiencing at some point. With Sticker Star, I find that its best qualities are its decent level design and superb presentation, qualities I could get elsewhere with other Paper Mario games and Mario games in general.
That's just the thing with Sticker Star for me: it's not so much an absolute trainwreck of a game where nothing about it works. It's more of a death-by-a-thousand-paper-cuts situation where every little annoying thing about the game just adds up over time that it leads to a middling experience. And with how improved the next two games are, I don't find any good reason to play it again outside of analysis or boredom.
    Tl;dr: Sticker Star mid
This has been a very enjoyable series! It's great to see someone give the game a fair shot and try to appreciate what it does; it's easy to just rag on the game constantly for how mediocre it is, but it wouldn't be an engaging experience if it was nothing but bashing. Also learned a few things in this playthrough that I could see myself doing if I ever play this game again for whatever reason. I hope you take care and enjoy yourself, and I look forward to what else you're making!

Doesn't mean I have to share in his frustrations, regarding this undercooked chicken nugget of a game.

tbh while this game does have it's upsides and probably does shake out better than SPM once you've been through both of them a time or two already to have repeat playthroughs, I don't think i'll ever be able to get past that sense of betrayal it instilled in me buying it on release day, excited for a follow-up to the tried-and-true RPG formula of the first two games, and even hearing rumors of a chain chomp partner (which years later we'd learn was legitimately in beta builds)
is it fair to Sticker Star? Not really. But maybe I don't *want* to be fair to Sticker Star.
Also despite SPM's issues I still occasionally end up wanting to play through that game's version of the Pit from time to time so it has that going for it.

The Bowser fight really, really sucks if you mess up and don't bring the correct stickers. While admitedly when done well it is the most fun fight in the game, it kinda accidentally demonstrates perfectly this game's main issue with the combat system. Fights are either way too lopsided in your favor or against you. And fittingly enough, at the very end, you can either curb-stomp Bowser with the Kersti sticker or the infinijumps... or you can spend an ungodly amount of time chipping away at Bowser with your stickers hitting like papercuts while Bowser hits you like a shredder. All in all, easily the worst final boss in the series.

Welp. Sticker Star. Seemingly weak, but not as weak as people like to remember, even plays well with great graphics and level design. Honestly, as years go by, I find stories BEHIND games much more entertaining than stories in-games.
It reminds of another fourth game in the series, Heroes of Might and Magic IV. Previous game is considered the best by pretty much all fans of the series, kind of like TTYD, although this one lives up to its reputation. And IV made many changes in gameplay, the story was much better, although it happened in a different world, cause the previous one was destroyed by two idiots clashing overpowered magic swords against each other, tl;dr Heroes IV was very different from its predecessor, both in good and bad ways and was hated by many for it back in the day, which was one of the factors leading to their publisher, 3DO, going bankrupt.
By now, many agree that Heroes IV wasn't so bad and its many differences make it in many ways even better than Heroes III, but the damage is done.
Honestly, I'm glad Intelligent Systems is still going strong. Sticker Star, Advance Wars' constant mishaps, lukewarm reception of Fire Emblem before Awakening, and they still stand and deliver. More power to them!
And thanks, Skawo, for another great playthrough!

The decision to give Bowser zero dialogue or characterization in this game is so baffling. I'd call it an atempt to totally line up with NSMB-style Mario, but they gave Bowser Jr. and Kamek dialogue, so I dunno. Lack of a final dungeon beyond two boss fights and a 30-second platform ride is also pretty heinous.
    Enjoyed this LP though!

Y'know, I feel like if super paper mario wasn't a thing and we kept just getting more games like TTYD/64 I think it'd eventually reach the same conclusion as the mario luigi series. In that respect I suppose I'm glad to have this much variation within this franchise, it has a little something for everyone while keeping under the umbrella of "quirky mario rpg". While I can admit to finding sticker star mediocre today that doesn't change the fact I loved playing it all those years back (personal favourite is origami king). Very much looking forward to whatever the fuck they plan to do in stamp champ. Just hoping they move away from things and paper at this point- that stuff has gotten tiring and predictable by now, disco dancing hole punches be damned (they ripped off the turkey).
