Fantastic art. I'm annoyed I found out about these too late, now that vol 1 seems to be out of print. What do you think is the chance of getting a reprint of vol 1, considering vol 1 of Barbarian seems to be getting one soonish?
Picking up both Omnibus-series ( _Barbarian_ and _Savage Sword_ ), and have been since that first _Barbarian_ volume came out in 2018. Been sorta alternating between different covers for _Barbarian_ (either DM or MM, depending on which one strikes my fancy), but have snagged all three MM covers for _Savage Sword_ (just like yours). Volume 3 is now officially on its way to me (just got the shipping-notice last night).
Been getting both but the Savage Sword books are my favorite so far. The art is at another level. Looks timeless even. Almost dropped the Barbarian book but once I realized Buscema took over that book full time, I had to keep getting those too.
Been reading the Barbarian omni number 3 and it's funny that the Gil Kane covers of each issue are sort of simple and cartoonish but the Buscema artwork inside is great. Sort of the opposite of what goes on with some comics today.
Great overview of the Savage Sword of Conan volume 3 Omnibus! I got a sneak peek at it before my direct market edition comes in the mail. There were 2 Marvel Super Specials that colorized Savage Sword, they are in Vol 2 and 3. The 4 treasury editions colored some stories also. Thanks Omar
Your videos on these are making me want to upgrade! I have the Dark Horse trades. They are in black & white and thick. Similar to how the Marvel Essential and DC Showcase trades were. Keep up the great videos!
A Red Sonja omnibus, a Kull omnibus ... sigh, would be lovely. Love the bonus material in those omni, they have been extra special. Looking forward to the Kane omni.
@@SAFFRONINFERNO Hope so, I saw it listed but since then I haven't seen anything else about it. Still, hopefully there will be a Red Sonja omni at some point
My 1st real introduction to Conan was the Dark Horse Chronicles of Conan--and I loved the re-coloring. From there I got a few of the DH SSOC trades and could tell it just didn't do the mags justice. So, I started getting the early mags a few lots at a time and loved them. As good as the Omnis are, I prefer a well preserved magazine for all of the stories of other characters (which weren't in the DH trades either). Of course, I'd never refuse an Omni as a gift, or at 70+% off.
Ernie Chan my Fav Conan artist. Can not wait for this one. Would be awesome if they put out a collection of all the Savage Sword Cover Art in one book , without the titles/ wording . Or even all the pinups in one collection. Thanks Omar for putting me on to these.
Great video Omar. I pre-ordered it from my lcs i hope they will get my copy in soon as i cant wait to read it and both the Conan the Barbarian omnibus vol4 aswell as the Solomon Kane omnibus which hopefully are still coming out in August.
i really wish they would have & this books like the Doc Savage Archive hardcover meaning it was the same size as an omni but wider so the page art was bigger & book was wider like the magazines
Totally agree, they should have reprinted the same size as the original mags or bigger. Seems like the artwork is actually smaller in the omnis vs the mags.
As usual Omar gets the STUFF first does his REVIEW thing which we all look forward to and at the same time wishing we had the Book in our hands like he is entitled to on the Sly Omar Brother looking forward to your review of The Amazing Fantasy Omnibus as well as the Morbius Omnibus Quite Sure you won't disappoint us as usual.
Excited to see how Conan by Busiek looks next to Savage Sword and the Marvel Years. Nice video, thanks for reminding me I need that paperback. Violence!
Big Conan fan since I finally got a bit of dosh and was able to collect all the original Barry Windsor-Smith issues. But have never owned any Savage Sword although it too has great artists like John Buscema to Ernie Chan, so these Omnis would be a good pickup.
The Dark Horse Savage Sword collections were still in black and white. Basically phone books on newsprint. And they collect the cover (in black and white), the 'frontpiece' pin-up for each issue, and then just the Conan comic of that issue. No essays, no letters, and that color special was nowhere to be found. I picked up a bunch of used DH omnibuses a while back, and I go back and forth on justifying buying the Marvel editions. I want them, but, you know, budget....I am absolutely collecting the Omni's of the regular series, though. And I can't wait for the upcoming Solomon Kane collection!
Hour Of The Dragon was originally printed in Giant Sized Conan 1-4 which were in color. The last two chapters were printed in black& white in Savage Sword 8 &10. And Roy did often adapt stories from Howard`s other characters such as Bran Mak Morn & Turlogh O`brien as well as John Jake`s Brak The Barbarian.
I love the content of these Omnis... already ordered the DM cover of this one. Very disappointed in the terrible binding. This is like a faux sewn binding that doesn’t flex and it leaves absolutely terrible gutter rolls on at least one side of the book... just like the first two SSOC omnibus. For the price these omnis deserve proper sewn binding that flexes so that people can actually read them comfortably and see what is going on on the inside panels near the spine. Not only that if these are the same fools that made the first two omnibus then I hope they got the paper stock and the inks right this time. Because with the first two omnibus the ink smears and if you touch the ink it leaves fingerprints... All this on a book with such terrible gutter rolls you have to press down on the page to read near the spine... which smears the inks and leaves fingerprints... also leaves ink on your hand after a reading session. ... actually now that I think about it these omnibus are terrible. The Marvel of today (Disney) doesn’t deserve to own and make money off of the Marvel of yesterday if they don’t respect the content enough and their customers enough to have these books made properly.
wow man, thats terrible, I never heard this problem before. I also have the first two SSOC omnis, but are very and dont smear. Interested to know if others have seen this.
I haven't heard of this problem in the past. I'm sorry you got two bad books. That really sucks. It sounds like they just came out of the printer if they are smearing like that.
The binding used in the SSoC Omnis is terrible, and this third volume seems to be the worse until now. Hard pass for me, until Marvel publishes this material in a premium format, like Masterworks or the regular OHCs. Those Omnibuses are a shame.
I'm collecting both conan and savage sword omni's plus since no omni's for the dark horse years i'm getting their epic collections for that. really enjoying the omni's
I used to get the dark horse collected editions for savage sword. RoyThomas was a genius in my opinion. This was some of the greatest adult stories magazine format ever done!
Good review. These are gorgeous collection books, far better than the Dark Horse books which did not use the glossy media (and are smaller in size). I'm just wondering how many volumes will be needed to reprint all 235 issues of The Savage Sword of Conan the Barbarian. And how many years to complete? So I’m not sure if I'd would want to continue to purchase them, just yet (I do have volume 1). Main reason is that I already have all original 235 issues of the Marvel magazines and all 22 volumes of the Dark Horse collection. It took a few years to collect them and haven’t read them all yet. But again, for those that don’t own the previous, these are probably the best format that can be had to collect the series. This is black & white artwork at its best, not to mention the great stories. Now I'm thinking of maybe buying the next 2 volumes. Darn!
@@NearMintCondition Thank you! Before I had only read the Dark Horse era. I have absolutely loved the original Marvel stuff. Some of Thomas' best work I think.

So I see this is getting reprinted by Titan in 2024 but there’s different amount of pages. Do we know what content is missing from reprint? SSoC omnibus vol 4 matches with what marvel printed so I’m confused. Any ideas Omar?
I had several copies of these as a kid and I know John Buscema is the iconic Conan artist to many, and frazzetta is iconic too. To me tho ERNIE CHAN was THE Conan artist. His Conan was always the best. These bring back memories.
IMAGINE if Kirkman approved the colouring to a re-release of The Walking Dead series. That would be weird. I would feel the same as you do in regards to savage sword. Something rustic about this Conan series where it would just ruin it. The black and white lends its self to the lore.......
Near Mint Condition I guess when it comes to some books bring recoloured like the case with absolute swamp thing sometimes how they redone THAT is how they originally intended for it to be done cuz Stephen Bissette LOVES the colours but were limited with technology at the time the original issues came out. With these Conan books they were black and white and that is perfect.
I have gone all in Conan. Even though I have all four epic collections so far, I bit the bullet and got both Colossal King Conan and Colossal Conan the Cimmerian to have it in the best presentation possible. Now if I can only get Colossal Conan lol.
Update: Got the Colossal Conan today for $350. Very happy to add this to the collection and complete the set. Price was really good too considering what I’ve seen it sell for. Got the three for $765 combined. I just missed these when they went OOP as I didn’t start collecting until February 2019 unfortunately. These are priceless. This is in my opinion the best Conan material ever put out. I read the first epic collection and that was enough for me to want to pursue this. I’m thrilled to have it in the best format possible.
Ever since Covid I have not been able to snag any DM omnibus on preorders, The last one I got was power pack on IST. I’m lucky I’ve been able to get them up at a LCS but it’s a 3 hour drive and cover price :(
For these b&w editions, people shluld be made more aware of the inker's part to the end product. Those layouts by Buscema, as far as I'm aware, are really everything he brings. It's still genius, but look what De Zuniga makes out of those, specificallybfor perfect white and black weights on the page. Come to think of it, these layout/embellishment combos should be credited as art by John Buscema & Tony DeZuniga, for this example. Not that I have any gripes, but the reader should be aware of how this stuff is actually done.
Omar, has David ever mentioned anything about possibly having these books recolored and re-released? Because I agree 1,000,000 percent with Roy Thomas that these stories would be better with color. I even naively entertained the idea of coloring my copies myself but I realized pretty quickly that that would be a dumb idea.
Awesome job on the reviews. If you own the OG comics, and the dark horse collected SAVAGE editions (thick paper back ones) as well as the Chronicles of Conan, would you say it’s worth it to get these Marvel omnibuses? thanks!
The publishing of this one seems to be a mess. I pre-ordered it from Amazon (UK) back in December when it was supposed to come out in June. When it didn't I got an email saying they didn't have the item I pre-ordered - fair enough considering the situation. Now that it's actually out (on Amazon US at least) I haven't heard anything. Kinda wondering how long to wait before I just cancel the order and buy it from the US Amazon despite the extra 30$ shipping costs.
There's a stealth-reprint coming of the first Marvel _Conan the Barbarian_ Omnibus, I think within the next couple months. Not sure yet if any plans to reprint _Savage Sword_ Vol. 1, though.
So I bought all the regular conan omnis. If I get vol 2 & 3 can I read them without 1? Or should I just wait until hopefully vol 1 gets a reprint to read those two?
@@NearMintCondition Actually, all four of my Conan omnis were stolen, but I was able to replace Conan 1&2 and savage Sword 2, but SS 1 is the one that was special to me, since I'm old enough to have bought all those early issues. If you get any news, please pass it on. Sven Larsen and I are old friends from Toronto. we both worked at the Silver Snail together before he got scooped up by Marvel's marketing department in the early 1990s ( or was it even the late 1980s?). Sven's a great guy and i love seeing his name in the Marvel credits.
Agreed... I'd NEVER want to see a color version of Berserk for example. The colored issue actually shows it's age more for me personally, and the detail is diminished.
Oh man, I was told they would keep making them as long as they kept selling. I think later on the issues were smaller or reprinted older stories so it might be 13 or so.
I snagged the original Colossal Conan monstrosity for just under $500 (like $490 shipped, I think), but I lucked out and managed to pre-order both the Colossal Cimmerian and King Conans for below cover-price (at Target and Amazon, respectively). When that Colossal King Conan actually shipped, I fist-pumped out loud, since lots of folks's Amazon-orders were getting cancelled at that point.

Any hope of Vol 1 being repinted? Mine was stolen! I think you've sold me on Vol 3, though! (The DH reprints were horrible colored by computer)
Man, that sucks that it got stolen. I'm going to ask if there will be a reprint of 1.
Where can I buy volume 1?
I believe it’s out of print right now.
Thanks for responding. Maybe I’ll go the Marvel Years omnibus.
Volume 4 review please!
Coming soon.
Super
Interesting 👍👍👍
Glad you think so!
Can I throw out a question to everyone? If I had to buy one Conan Omnibus which one would people suggest?
hard to choose. Any of the first 3 SSOC omni are fantastic
Savage Sword for sure.
Agreed... I'd NEVER want to see a color version of Berserk for example. The colored issue actually shows it's age more for me personally, and the detail is diminished.
I'm with you.
Still waiting on the Busiek run. I know it's coming out soon, but it's not soon enough. My Dark Horse TPB are falling appart
It's coming.
@@NearMintCondition yeah, go ahead, tease me
Jhon Buscema draws his women sexy and I like it. No one draws like him nowadays. So detailed.
Silvestri comes close, but Big John is the man.
if we ever get a King Conan Marvel Years omnibus, we will get to enjoy Silvestri Conan art
OMAR- please let PETER GABRIEL that full run of DARK HORSE CONAN omniboo is better than having creator centered CONAN omniboo with missing issues
I think they are waiting to see how sales do. If warranted we will get the Truman omnis.
Is there going to be ten volumes of this series in total?
Each Omni has around 16 magazines, and there were a total of 235 issues, plus some specials and the Savage Tales stories, so 10 won't be enough.
Oh man, I was told they would keep making them as long as they kept selling. I think later on the issues were smaller or reprinted older stories so it might be 13 or so.
I just snagged The Colossal Conan The Cimmerian for original cover price!!!!!!
WOT!!!!
DH’s were phone books...blah!
Damn, Phonebooks.
No no no don’t color it...its blasphemy!
My man.
Marvel needs to learn to adjust color to paper.
