- I hope you're sitting down cause this is one long, strange and fun road trip. Episode 286 of Mike Finnegan's Garage is all about a trip my friends I took, which began in Georgia but saw us driving to the coast of South Carolina and then to the mountains of North Carolina and finally, back to Georgia. Along the way I bought a 1970 Datsun 510 two-door, with the goal of driving it from the beach to the mountains so we could go snowboarding one last time before the season ended. The car was mostly great and it made it home intact. My leg? Not so much. lol

We're glad we were able to help you out with the connectors, and we enjoyed hanging out with you and the guys for a few minutes. Sorry to hear about the injury and hopefully the recovery will be a quick one. Welcome to the Datsun community! You'll find that the old Datsuns are nimble and fun to drive. Enjoy!
You legend! Beautiful datsun dude!
Thanks!
Have a white 1969. I'd love to say as nice as yours!!
A Z260 is nimble??
LoL
Peace!
Wish I had B210 back
Beautiful 1600!
Pro-Tip: Use a Gatorade bottle for the puke/recovery bottle. The ribs in the bottle help it not slip out of the zip-tie. 0:03
plus it can take a bit higher temp then the flimsy water bottle
I like Vermont maple syrup bottles - the little.jug handle is great for a zip tie 😂
For years he will hear” turn off the car, Jordan!” Lol. Glad everything worked out. Cool car.
Jordan with the reflexes of a jet lagged sloth there! 😅 "Turn off the car Jordan!" and "Open the trunk Jordan!" 😋
Talk about stirring up old memories. I was stationed in Charleston in 1972 Since my Malibu SS in CA, I ended up getting a Datsun 510 for transportation. Basic 2 door, L16, 4 speed, and not much else. I drug that thing around over the years... Charleston, Rota Spain, California, Hawaii, and back to SoCal before finally traiding it in on a 1977 Datsun 620 pickup, with an L20 and a 4 speed. Trashed the 4 speed, and upgraded it to a 5 speed. Good memories with both of them.
That car has been to more places than most people. How cool.
Love this episode, it has that strong OG Roadkill feel. Mike you have always been the driving force of that show from day one. Wish you would do more like this one!!Mad❤ and respect Bro!!!🤟😎👍💯💯💯💯💯
Did you not notice the white truck following behind through them whole show.
37:33 in the dump trucks defense, you completely ignored that there was indeed an entire right lane for turning you chose to ignore 😆😆
yeah i didnt even notice the turning lane until it was too late.
I would have cut that part out. Whoever edited this did him dirty lol.
Thanks Mike. Sorry about your leg. Wiring repair is a good first-person life lesson for the boys of overcoming obstacles (while in the side of the road). Thanks for Datsun Jason for the rescue!
I am shocked the people at the gas station didn’t give you a bunch of grief about turning their pumps into a repair shop. Good on them.
Yeah I was surprised no-one came out to ask what they were doing. Didn't look busy though.
The older the car - the more latitude you'll get. You know it's real bad when they are bringing you free hot dogs, coffees and drinks. Ask me how I know 😂
I'm naming it the Piss Missle!
Speedy recovery Mike🙏
Epic!
noticed the star on the rearview mirror switch, now kids, thats fer nite drivin!! cool ride!
Man! There's something about late 60s/early 70s Japanese cars! Love this!
Listen to the doc! We don't heal quite as well as we used to.
....all cars from that Era! Simple and stylish, perfect combo
Correction Mike. The 55 mph speed limit started in 1974, the year I got my license. Major bummer. I had a year of a restricted permit to know was I was missing, and plenty of speeding tickets, because I didn't like it.
WATER BOTTLE FIX---Bought an 04 Ram w/5.9 Cummins did not have an overflow for the coolent.. put a rubber hose to a thick water bottle and it's worked for over a year!😂
Gatorade bottle is best, very thick and has the grooves for the zip ties.
As soon as you started that thing, I could smell my teenage years. That is such an iconic sound.
That little thing brings back so many memories. I bought a 1970 510 in 1976. It was a blast to drive. My friends and I would pile in to go hunting in Winter. When we'd get stuck we'd just either push it or lift it out of the hole. Mine had the 1600. Just one of the many cars I wish I still had.
Epic trip with the boys. A badass car... broken leg... worth it
yup. im still smiling.
@@FinnegansGarage the “why didn’t it blow a fuse?” Isn’t a 510 thing it’s a Datsun thing, my roadster has the fuse block with a burnt hole. Get a new fuse block with newer fuses and redo it. I’ve rewired 1/2 my car to melted plugs. Hope this helps
appreciate you bringing light to the fact that not all old hot rods are from the big 3. I love my classic american cars but I also have a soft spot for olds toyotas and datsuns.
all cars can be made good.
Absolutely, I struggle with the Mopar or Ford croud when I show up with a 2J Celica. My datsun cars always seem to get some respect
FYI... sports drink bottles or any thick plastic bottle work better for radiator overflow tanks.
Brings back memories. My first car was a 1978 510 with a 1980 grille and headlights. 2L engine out of an 83 240Z with dual Weber sidedrafts. Went like a bat out of hell! Brock rally edition red/white/blue paint and 50 series tires all around, cornered like a rock! Would give a body part or 2 to have that car back again!
Well, it's about time you bought a cool car!!! Now all you need is a 2 litre twin cam with ITBs, 6 speed manual, slightly upgraded suspension and brakes. Making around 300hp and it would be PERFECT 👍.
No need for twin cam, l series is a great motor.
@@koneking2569 There's twin cam heads for them :)
I had a workmate who owned a 70's 510. She had it all tricked out and was an SCCA racer. It was her daily driver too. She had a lead foot for sure. LOL. I knew folks who had down draft dual Hollies on those cars . They liked them better then the side drafts. The Datsun side draft carbs were notoriously cold-blooded on start-up. I had a 72 240Z and those carbs were tuned and they still had cold start issues. Get the Hollies for better running overall. Get well soon Board Runner. Hope it heals fast.
I would say a big shout out to Jason for being a great car guy is due ! Thanks Jason. Mike try to pay attention when carving and good news about your leg and I hope everyone else had fun and now can we please get back to building ProMod Street cars, thank you and good luck.
I use to have a 510 rally car. The most fun you can have on dirt or wet roads legally. It had twin SU’s and a built 2L with a 10k redline pushing 200 ponies.
There’s a huge amount of parts available to get them handling like they run on rails.
These days the few remaining ones in Australia tend to have an SR20 under the hood.
Dr.Wall is freaking awesome. Most of my family has used him. Great doctor
First car I drove was my Dad's 1967 Datsun 510 4 door. 67 cu in and 67 HP! 4 speed. Only thing I could drag race was my friend in his VW Bug! I remember on the Interstate you just put it to the floor and left it there. You'd go 65 up the hill and 75 down the hill so you averaged the speed limit!
In the early 80s I had a 510 station wagon with a 4speed, cam, headers, carb and a glass back. The body was seven different colours, and had rust and lots of body damage, but the motor ran great, and I had tall good winter tires, it was my winter beater and ski machine, when I lived in Canada. We made a wooden box on the roof, just screwed it on to the roof, for the skis, and with the extra space of the station wagon four of us could load up our gear and go skiing. When the roads got really bad, I had a full set of chains. It was a great driving winter beater, it was fun to drive and I hated selling it.
BTW, I’ve broken both fibulas skiing.
Cheers from Tokyo
I think Paul Newman raced one as well. Another INCREDIBLE car from this time is the 1973-75 Toyota Celica!!! Same thing and THEY LOOK GREAT!!
Sweet as, the Datsun 510 my favourite little car. Such a fun thing to drive.
Great video guys.
Epic. Glad you got to bring your kid along. Mostly so he could learn the ways of the Roadkill. I did a similar thing with my dad as a teenager. When on winter vacation in California visiting relatives, we were on the beach one day and rented a car the next day, and drove to the mountains and skied. There was a decent snow storm on the way up. The authorities tried to turn us away because we didn't have snow chains. My dad replied, "we're from Michigan and this is nothing". Somehow, pre-GPS, we found our way around the roadblock and had an awesome day on the slopes. I will never forget that day!
Get well soon Mike that was a really great experience with you and all that you guys went through! Smiles on your faces was great contrast to every little smokey adventure. I've always enjoyed your videos.I appreciate you much more for this one.
Cool car. Cool kid. Good buddy with a road trip and time with your kid.
Yup... gettin' old sucks! Sorry about your leg. Glad you're gonna make a full recovery. And, I really miss snowboarding. 😢
Memories, my old 71 DATSUN 1200 was so cool. I wish I had not taken it 4wheeling. (kid stuff)
I checked out a B210 "Honey Bee" back in the 70's and the air rush through the carburator was louder than the exhaust. When I punched it in 1st gear it felt like it was going backwards.I bought a '74 Celica GT 18RC and I loved that thing. I drove the wheels off it.
I broke my fibula the same way during my first deployment, it was diagnosed as "high ankle sprain" (no, the PA didn't order x-rays)
I NEVER got it wrapped or even crutches, it was quite painful to walk on for the first 3 weeks.
I didn't actually find out it had broken until 5 years later during my exit physical
The big bummer, I was getting into cross-country running, after the break (which did NOT fully heal) I no longer have the stability to take on un-even terrain
Glad yours was diagnosed and does NOT need surgery!
Mike, great 510, get well soon.
great to see you guys had fun. Hope You feel better ... Always entertaining
You took me back to my youth with this one man. A bunch of us piling into lowered Datsuns and Volkswagens going to the mountains and getting hurt. This is one of my all time favorites. Cheers.
Best thing about mike is he listens to the people around him. would have been easy to not tape anything up, but they did the parts needed.
Grew up racing Datsun 510s in SCCA in AK. Such a great car and love the episode! Some racer friends pulled the 2.7 inline 6 out of a 280z, notched the firewall in a 510 back like 12 inches and installed the inline size. Insane little righ. Wish you could get hold of them these days would love one as a project car!
Speedy recovery buddy... thanks for the video
Your wife is so cool ! Every gearhead needs a woman like her ! She’s the BOMB !
You own a yellow firebird
Boy , that little car brought back memories of my youth, especialy the touchy ignition switch. Driving my girl friend's 510 once I had to fiddle with the key more than usual one time, a couple blocks down the road I noticed the key said Yamaha on it. I put my bike key in it by mistake and it worked.
God bless your friend again I'm glad you didn't have to have surgery
Reptiles and cars are two of my favorite things, lol. Cool to see them combined in a video from you 😂
I flipping love it. By far my favorite type of videos.
My best friend in high school back in 1974 bought a brand new 510. First thing he did was to put some US Mags on it as well as side pipes. It was butterscotch color, but we had a blast in that thing! Craziest night was coming home from the first California Jam concert April 6th, 1974 and he accidentally ran 2 bikers off the freeway trying to cut over 3 lanes to reach the Orange freeway. They came down the side of the 57 freeway offramp and chased us down until we got stuck in traffic. They parked in front and behind us and one of them proceeded to bash on my friends window until he rolled it down. When the guy could get his arm in he punched out my friend a few times then got back on his bike and rode away. Quite the end to what had been an eventful day. It was also in 1974 when I bought a little Honda 125 to get around on. Got run into by a 16 year old that just got her permit and crushed my tibia and fibula. In and out of hospitals for the next five years having a multitude of skin grafts and bone grafts to save my leg. Needless to say I gave up on motorcycles since then!
this was a great watch, really nice datsun and i hope you get better soon
I love a good 510, I can't wait to see a full build on this even if its not crazy.
Man Datsun 510. I love those. Used to race a Datsun pickup in circle dirt years ago. I found some real cool ways to make those FAST! Use a 2.4 bottom end from a hardbody mini truck and put the L16 head on it!! That’s a great trick we did in our race truck
It only caught on fire once. Best day at work ever!
Mike, dude ! .... Broke leg a' walkin' ! .... well anything to get the "Proud Dad's" shot ! A family from church had an older jeep and knew my family needed help with a vehicle.... it lit up under the dash whilst driving down a fairly busy 2 lane road ... so while pulling over onto the shoulder I was grabbing the wiring and trying to smother it with my "drywall hanger" toughened hand and by the grace of God it melted one of the wires through..... whew ..... super props to all the helpers in this one !
Busted his leg and took it like a champ. My man MIKE! Glad the Dotsun worked out pretty good on the way home.
Just like back in my day "We just hit it with whatever".
LOL...
Props to y’all for fixing that electrical issue in a parking lot! Helpful car people are the best! Heal soon.
Thanks for the awesome video! This was worth watching as a owner of a 510 🤙🏽🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
my old man had a '78 Datsun 510 wagon, with the 5 sp., used to love driving that thing, especially when a lil snow on the roads
I learned to drive with ‘76 620 pickup and experienced everything you did will owning it. Electrical issues were common with the Datsuns of that era. Those old wire harnesses had fuse links that burned out all the time. Great memories. It had the Webber 2 barrel carb, Thrush exhaust header, and exhaust. It would burn rubber in all 4 gears. Wish I still had it. It got t-boned by a ‘86 GMC Jimmy. The little truck saved my life. 😢
A buddy of mine had a ‘74 B510. Ah, the memories. 😊
The 510 is awesome, always wanted one. I wanted to point out the evolution of the Roadkill videos. In the early days there would have been flashlights taped to the hood (if it still had a hood in place). Now they totally legit fix the wiring, diagnosed and repaired to a point that it can be safely driven, easily fixed fully later on. Kudos.
I love that you were totally unfazed by removing and repairing an entire wiring loom on the ground in the middle of the night, miles from anywhere.
Epic trip. Heal up well Mike.
Wow you bought one of my all time fav cars. I still have my Dads 72 Datsun PL521 truck I learned to drive in. He bought it new and drove it continuously for over 30 years. Love this video!
My favorite car if any of the others on the channel!!! I love everything about the Datsun!!!
Weber carb.....get the adapter for a bigger round aircleaner. The stock ones that come with the Webers choke them out and are trash. Make sure the floats are set correctly most of the time they aren't properly set from the factory. If it is a 38/38 it will have synchronized barrels but you can get a kit to make them progressive. This will keep it from flooding out and makes start up easier. They are great little carbs for mileage and performance once they are properly tuned.
I second the name "Piss Missile"!
Looks great in the yellow Mike. And such a cool little datto. Cheers for the tag along on the road trip. It was great fun. Say g'day to everyone.
Hope you have a speedy recovery so you can go back next year and try snowboarding again. I'm amazed you were able to drive all that distance without a license plate and didn't get stopped by John Law!
I have pretty much converted to the M12 and M18 stuff for our tools. The 1400 impact is more powerful than all my air stuff, almost combined. Love the Milwaukee AND your 510. Thanks for sharing Mike.
OK, just to add my 10 cents as a suggested name for the new Datsun, I got 2, either "Broken Leg" or, if you do paint it the baby blue you were talking about, "No Fuse Blue". Thanks for yet another VERY fine and fun sharing of your adventures. It makes my days SO MUCH better Mr. Finnegan.
Congrats on the Dime,Mike! Sorry to hear about the injury though. Looking forward to this project. Drop an SR20 in that!
ive heard left hand ignition was Lemans start as well. but ive also heard it was due to metal shortages during the war. left hand ignition used less wiring.
Ive always wanted a 510 4 door! Im living vicariously through you right now. 510s are so dope!
This felt more like an old school Roadkill than a Finnegan's Garage episode, good stuff. Thank good you got the power cut before the harness actually went up in flames.
Sweet car Mike , hope the leg heals quickly. Cheers 🇨🇦
South Carolina Datsun! How awesome. Also beech mountain is such a fun drive!
Yes!!!! And only lap belts too, a trip back in time...✌
Ahhh the joys of being reminded that we aren't young any more. Rest up Finn, and get back at er. I guess you'll have some time for unboxing vids for a while.
What a video! Sorry about your leg!
You've got one heck of a story tell for the rest of your life. About 10 years ago I was up doing some night snowboarding with a few friends and we jumped down over the back side of the mountain to another run to find it closed 15 minutes before we got to it. That turned into a 2 1/2 hour walk back up the mountain after closing to get picked up by a snowcat that was out grooming the trials it was a heck of a ride sitting on the back of it clinging to a slippery engine cover shaped like a wedge with exposed tracks because the cab was full. It was a crazy experience that has been fun to look back on.
Sounds like you were lucky and should make for a quick recovery.
Great episode and have a ball with this little Datsun hope to see her getting some love on the channel sometime in the neer future.
And smoke show or Lil Smoke would be a fun name for this car.
I had a Datsun 510 back in 1980. Loved that car.
Well Mike, you sure covered the spectrum of entertainment on this one. Glad you are on the mend.
jr.Finnegan you are pretty dang awsome at snowbording ! good for you little man !
Great Content as Always!
good episode , i hope it heals up quick.
I've spent many a night snowboarding down Sugar Mountain.
Love the 510, so much potential in those. Bummer about the leg though. Hope recovery goes well.
Hey Mike. Long time Datsun 510, 240z and 1200 owner and Rcaer here. Regarding the Side Marker light. Thye have bullet connectors for the Positive and Nnegative side of the Circuit. But the Bulb Negative side is also grounded to the Metal Housing of the Lamp. On a rewire you can get the Positive and Negative wire connectors backwards. That will give a direct short. Doesn't always happen right away, as the ground through the Lamp body is not always 100%. But hit a bump or Railwya tracks.. and the Magic Smoke gets out.
These cars also have a weird issue with feedback through the Brake Lights. They take 1156 and 1157 bulbs. Get them mixed up and they will feedback the Tail light circuits.
Beautiful. I got a 180b wagon and a bluebird wagon.
What dude would not be jealous of a day in the life of Finnegan. Even breaks a leg and has a great time!!
Thanks for sharing y'all's talents and adventures!!
You should name the car "break a leg".
Hey Mike Very nice car, so glad you guys didn't burn it to the ground. Hope your leg heals soon. Cheers.
thank you for sharing
That. There. Is camaraderie. 👏 Kudos Jason.
Hope you have a quick recovery
This show went from can't miss, to can't watch.
This brings back memories. I have a 1971 2 door 510 in high school ran the 1600 with webers and a 240z transmission
I go skiing in Banner Elk NC every year, you really need to go to Beech Mountain it is much better than Sugar Mountain! Hope you leg heals quickly, I just broke my wrist skating, so I feel your pain.
Glad to see you got to enjoy the mountains here in NC, sorry about the leg.
Thank you, nice too see you rocking it old school like you used too, would love too see a reunion episode like it used to be before, and just rock a Patreon first, then a few weeks later on RUclips or a month.
Finnegan is such a mouth breather..
Nice car.
Had a 510 wagon when I was in high school. Car was awesome. I miss it.
On of my all time favorites. The Datsun 620 bullet side extended cab pickup is my favorite for mini trucks.
