Junkyard 'Cuda Rescue, With Nitrous Oxide! - Roadkill Episode 11

- On this episode of Roadkill, David Freiburger and Mike Finnegan of HOT ROD magazine fly out of town, buy a car from a junkyard, make it run and drive, do burnouts, add nitrous, drag race twice, almost die, and the auction off the car at the end. The scene begins at CTC Auto Ranch in Denton, Texas, where the guys score a '67 Plymouth Barracuda with a 360 V8, but without a carburetor, interior, glass, or brakes. By the time they sort out a number of other mechanical woes, they're off for some burnouts and some racing at North Star Dragway, right next to the Auto Ranch. Then it's a 300-mile drive to Houston for the NMCA Lone Star Nationals race. But, as you've come to expect from these guys, that doesn't exactly go smoothly. But then they add NOS nitrous and it makes everything ok as they hang out with Jeff Lutz and Tim Reed from HOT ROD Drag Week right before they have to sell the car and hit the plane home.

Roadkill is by far the best thing that has came out of Motor Trend. One of my very favorite shows of all time.
It started off as an independent web show with those two guys and some people from hotrod magazine working the cameras until motor trend bought them out.

I just drove past the CTC Auto Ranch on my way home from Dallas. I was so geeked when I pulled up this episode and yes, it was the one in the episode. My wife had a good chuckle at me being excited as a little kid 😂.

This Barracuda was one of your best . Maybe up close not so much? Wish you had kept this one. If you can put big block blower motors in 4 Dr Impala's this could have been interesting.

Right off the showroom floor and love at first sight. Was mulling over the brochure for a Mustang, but not after I saw the Cuda.
It was never driven the way you drove yours, but the next owner wrecked it the first weekend.
Cool car subject. We ordered a 1968 Barracuda 340 formula s, that was to be my graduation car. Age 10 and I did all the service , oil changes wash and wax, reward for my work was test drives. Too bad it got totaled..
Now it's pretty high up there on my bucket list.🙏🙏

I’m a former USAF ER doc, our trick for saving eyebrows from tape was to cut the tape down the center and pull outwards. Both eyebrows remain!
@Based Catboi If you pull from the side the brow you're pulling against comes off. This was you're pulling in the direction of both brows.

I had a 67 Plymouth Barracuda in 1969. Mine was a convertible, white over red. I wish I still had it.
A bucket list item for me is pulling a car out of CTC Auto Ranch and getting it back on the road
Nitrous will always make a car go faster but the engine life is shorter.

As an Englishman, I'm so insanely jealous of the junk yards and speed shops you guys have, cause we've got nothing over here. I'd consider moving just so I could work on V8s and buy an old rusty Impala or something, I'd be in heaven.

I Like this Show better than any show on regular tv. On this show they do what a lot of People do. Like not throw a lot of money at a car, but make it work with Junk yard parts.

I live in the UK and a 'Cuda like that would be a really special car over here, amazing episode. I'd love to be able to do stuff like that but even if we did have '60's V8's lying around (and we don't) they'd all be rusty.

Well considering how many cars they do have, the Cuda probably would sit for a few years and rot away some more. It was best they give it to someone who wants to restore it and won't be impeded by other projects.
I imagine they had to recoup some of the expenses from the build. They mention many times how they were out of money or couldn't afford something. Then when they auctioned it, once it got past 3000 is when they got super excited, that is prolly the amount they blew the budget from the company by. They shouldn't have sold it, but prolly had to to make the episode possible and prevent a major ass chewin form a boss.

better yet just make roadkill a show on tv. i mean it gets more views on youtube than a lot of programs on todays tv so if its on tv they might get better funding and hey, if the neetwork restricts what they do or it just doesnt work out they got youtube to come back to. but honestly i prefer the youtube version

AT 18:00, THAT IS ONE OF MY DAD´S favorite tricks, whenever he found trouble, he even helped people he didn´t know on the road... MAN, this brought me memories of HIM, THIS IS THE WAY HE GOT HIS ´67 Rambler Classic and his ¨83 Dodge Dart K ( "KIT", and "el tronquito" ), he almost got them for free, and his adventure spirit did the rest, you could see the gleam in his eyes EVERY TIME he made work something everybody said that was beyond fix... that was my dad, a hard working man and a great dreamer who chased his dreams and loving every minute of it... MAN, thanks for the memories, ... love you DAD...

No, they mopar was twice the chevy. As in take what he wanted for the chevy and divide by two, theres the chevy price. CTC's prices are really fair based on what i've seen from their website
Jim Davis That was for the Cuda, and that's a really fair price. Myself, I would have gone for the Pontiac and stuffed a nice 455 in it, stroked and poked with nitros you can make a reasonable, if lumpy, streetable 600, but there's no arguing the stance of that Cuda is killer. Just gorgeous, there's something special about that rear body work that makes a Cuda unique, like that Pininfarina Volo everyone talks about or the XKE or the Spitfire it just has that perfect aspect ratio that strikes the eye a certain way and makes you think " yes that's the way it should be, why can't they all be like this?"
No the Chevy was 2,000 he saw they were interested in the mopar I think he raised the price by atleast 1,000 in the end the cuda was 3,800

Hell even putting the 90's "Magnum" heads on my old 318 made a world of difference, let alone a thoroughly modern engine with all the power making advantages/tech they have now days

Well they didnt add nitrous... They added a plate below the carb.... The nitrous was in the bottle on the ground when they rolled it in the shop.

We have the Metric system here too but the government introduced it in 1976/7 when I was in grade 6 so I learned to use it after Imperial measures . I've been in the printing industry now for 20 years and we only use Metric for liquid measures . At home I only use Metric for temperature and liquid measures for cooking . I find Imperial is superior for long distance and larger weights .

This is still one of my absolute favorite Roadkill projects. The episode is based on a simple, yet interesting premise, and one hell of a great car. I miss this Cuda so much and wish they'd kept it! It had so much potential.
They're bringing it back in 2019, Dodge is going to make it. From the photo's I've seen though it basically looks like a modern day Camaro.
How can anyone give these guys a thumbs down! If your a true car guy this is like living the dream.
Frickin' Finne driving off in the golf cart doing his own version of the Benny Hill theme made me just lose it! This show is simply the purest, most wholesome form of entertainment in existence. Period. When i have a child, we are going to watch this show together, and build the wildest, most ridiculous motorized vehicle ever known to mankind, and we're going to give all the credit to Frei & Finn. Gentlemen, please keep doing what you do! It's this simple: keep inspiring us!

Man 14.7s 1/4 mile with an open dif, old motor, and leaky exhaust. gotta love old mopars, expensive but fast. They never said what motor was in the Cuda either, definitely a small block 318, or 360, maybe a 340 based on how spunky it was.

Yea that was a pretty crappy move but I'm actually going to go look at it sometime this week I'll post a video on my channel but likewise I will buy it and give it its well deserved glory.

That 110 mph trap speed is unbelieveable. The speed accumulated at the bottom half of the trap. His 60 foot was like 3.5-4 seconds and it probably took him 9 seconds to hit 60 mph. That NOS really worked!!!

Honestly, Ive been to CTC Auto Ranch myself since I live in the Dallas area and this place in Denton off 35 is like 45 minutes from me. These guys think that their Rust is Gold. They will die with all those cars sitting there. I wanted to buy a handful of cars off them. But their prices scared me and ran me off. Search all Craigslist and you can find complete cars that need little restoring for just a couple grand more instead of spending twice the amount of restoring these rust buckets. Screw Allen and Screw CTC Auto Ranch.
