You hit the nail on the head: if you want to encourage social change, you can’t preach to the choir. You need to write stuff that welcomes in the people you feel need to change.
Pretty much on point. You should try not to offend the people you want to deliver a message to. Also, offending those that are in that group but, don't behave like the group you are targeting, doesn't help either. In other words, stop offending an entire gender please. I live in a country where I already feel persecuted for the color of my skin, I really don't need to feel persecuted for my gender as well.
Kind of off topic, but that point that Chris made: "If you have protagonists who do nothing but talk about how much their lives suck, it gets annoying, boring, and it's hard to root for them if they don't make any attempts at helping themselves." That point made me realize a major flaw I had in a story I was writing. Thank you Chris for pointing that out.
@Smarks Killed Rasslin That has nothing do what I said. All I did was bring up how Chris' point helped me with some writer's block and could really help with my story and you go and make it political. FYI, you're wrong. Well, I didn't see the movie but from the small pieces Chris shows us I get the feeling that whoever made this "The movie is for women" claim should go and see a psychologist. Seriously, that's just so fucked up. Why should I enjoy this bad movie? Just because I'm female? Do women not care about good plots, characters and acting? It just doesn't make any sense.
Fun fact: This was filmed in my city's university. Specifically, Otago University in Dunedin, New Zealand. I even know a couple people who signed on to be extras within this film. It was pretty cool to have a Blumhouse movie being filmed in our little corner of the world. Then the movie came and went with no one in my city caring or talking about it. Yeah, when even the city you filmed the movie in (let alone a city that's NEVER had a movie of this scale being produced) doesn't care about your film, you know you screwed up somewhere.

Unfortunately, the internet age has only made the situation much worse.
Is this a thing? really? Do women get triggered by the "not all men" statement now? Because i seem to remember women right left & center losing their sh*t anytime someone tries to make a sweeping statement about women for like ever since i was young. I agree, but I couldn't really side with anyone aside from Riley and his girlfriend (in a couple of her points). He even filmed that performance, he doesn't have the right to all of a sudden play the victim card and if he does it needs to be developed more (was there a scene where he expressed discomfort at what the girls were doing?).
That scene was just... mind boggling in its stupidity. He presents a completely sound argument and gets shut down by "men have power" and "not all men." I knew this film was awful but I didn't think it'd be so brazenly incompetent as to put a scene like that in there.
The Invisible Man tackled all of the same issues that this movie tackles but does an infinitely better job. It also handles it with much more subtlety, as while it never flat out says that Adrian raped Cecilia (nor does it even overtly mention rape or sexual assault), you get a sense that that is the case when she says that he would hit her "among other things". There's also the fact that she's easy to relate to and identify with, which you can't say for any of the characters in this movie. Most of all, it's actually scary; the scene where Adrian's breath appears behind Cecilia is far more terrifying than anything that happens in this movie. It's ironic, since there's so much insistince that stories like this need to be told by women and The Invisible Man was written and directed by a man.
@Adrian Conn yeah you're an absolute idiot who has no clue what you're talking about and parrots 4chan reddit blogs. maybe go outside from your basement and actually talk to real people rather than straw man versions you wish existed

I’m a feminist woman who watched this for the first time last night and I despised it. It had absolutely no subtlety and I felt the message got lost in offensively stereotypical characters (both the men and the women) and I agree with you on feeling spoon fed. The problem isn't that she's bringing that up, the problem is that she's bringing it up in relation to him saying "Not all men have power!" Which is true when you take into account other issues like the class system, homosexuality, race, disabilities, several factors that do result in "men not having the power" That phrase is not related to any of those things, it's related directly to sexual assault and gender politics, which he probably wasn't talking about with that phrase (I know before and after he was trying to excuse misogyny but that one line stood out as not being directly related). It's weirdly inaccurate and ignores the somewhat valid yet unrelated point he was bringing up.

Eric H feminisms is.. or was supposed to be about equal rights for EVERYONE everyone deserves these rights the only reason it was originally called feminism because women and the idea of feminity, were in history looked down on and associated with a piticular gender when everyone has a right to feminity or masculinity. That’s what it’s SUPPOSED to be much like not every guy is a jerk, not every gay man is a villain, not every blonde persons the same applies to feminist not every one of them Believes woman are better and men are less then them someone that’s gross mentality that, we all, on both sides, need to grow up and move past to reach true equality. That being said, these stereotypes exist for a reason because we CAN be these awful things. Men can be jerks intentionally or unintentionally, there have been people in the lgbtq+ who have done things that make the group look bad, dumb people who are blonde exist, and their are feminists, like the people who made the new Charlie’s Angels and this, who honestly believe these dumbass things. It my therory but I think the reason people see the extreme cases more are because their so extreme they make good news and drama, better drama then a nonextreamest doing something. It’s the case of bad apples spoiling the basket, I HATE this movie and the mentality behind these Nazi level feminists but that doesn’t mean I won’t defend my rights as a person or a guys rights as a person.
It's really disheartening to see movies like this. Feminism was supposed to be about women becoming EQUAL to men. But now it just feels like a bunch of bullies are taking out their hatred on all guys-not just the ones who are legitimately horrible, but innocent men who probably abhor misogyny-and they're hiding under the feminist movement so that people don't call them out. Black Christmas is a prime example of this. I, for one, am tired of the whole 'agenda first, story second' trend. If I want to watch a 'feminist' movie, I'll just switch on 'Alien' or 'Nightmare on Elm Street'-movies that have well-done characters you care about, proactive female protagonists who are actually PEOPLE, and an engaging story. Thanks for reviewing this one, Chris. Glad I didn't see it in theaters.
When you actually look at the history of feminism it was rarely about equality. It was about using blame to get advantages. Some of them lead to equality. But quite a lot of them had nothing to with equality, but getting undeserved privledges. That's why feminsts are so adamant about keeping up the victimhood narrative. The second that's gone, they'd lose all their power.
Feminism is great, but it's often treated as a cash grab, or is only analyzed on a very surface level to the point of being misrepresented and ultimately misunderstood.
@@kurlykayla9013 Let me give you an example: Saying feminism is great and just misrepresented is like saying the nazi-ideology was great but misrepresented. The nazis might have had some good ideas about community, architecture and engineering for example. But the whole killing jews thing kind of poisons the well, wouldn't you agree? Same with feminism. Sure.. thinking about equality is great. And maybe that was once a needed thing. But as long as the victim blaming, all the lies, false data, all the hate and slogans like "kill all men" come with it.. it will always be poisoned. Feminism isn't just the good ideas. It's everything that belongs to the ideology. You can't just pick and chose. It's the whole package or none of it. If you wanna stick with the good stuff only, you're basically just left with human rights. Have you ever heard of someone defending their opinion that human rights are needed? Or that it's "just misrepresented and basically great"? No you haven't. Because things that are great don't need to apologize for their flaws.
@@earlgrey2130 comparing feminism to nazism is asinine. Furthermore, no ideology is ever going to be 100% perfect. The civil rights movement of the 60's contained people who are hateful, but that doesn't mean the cause within itself was. It doesn't mean the movement to liberate racial minorities was a bad thing. And even so, how common is "kill all men"? Genuinely tell me when was the last time you heard or saw people who claim to be feminists use that mantra? Look. I don't claim to be the keeper of all feminists, especially the ones who misinterpret what the point of feminism is. I just know that the pursuit and promotion of fair and equal treatment between genders is a cause worth having. It's more than just human rights. It's about questioning and discussing social perceptions, expectations, and reinforced norms that end up being limiting and damaging to both women and men. This is why I said what i said. You are ignorant, and don't understand much about feminism. The changes and discussions that have come from it are too invaluable, and frankly, I don't see how our understanding and views of gender can change for the better without it.
The original Black Christmas had a lot of strong and memorable female characters, an abortion subplot, and even then it didnt put agenda in front of the story. Everything felt natural, as something that grew out of story and nothing felt forced. Which is why it's great.

So the guy is bringing up points that are valid in general in a world where things are nuanced... but they are invalid in a movie where the men are clearly in the wrong, simply because the movie wrote it to be so.

Pretty much on point. You should try not to offend the people you want to deliver a message to. Also, offending those that are in that group but, don't behave like the group you are targeting, doesn't help either. In other words, stop offending an entire gender please. That point made me realize a major flaw I had in a story I was writing. Thank you Chris for pointing that out.

Which is why it's great.
girl in movie: something crazy is happening.
Me: yeah, no shit.
Other girl at the same time: Yeah, no shit.
Probably the only time this movie will get a laugh out of me.
1974 Billy: A mysterious figure whose true motives and appearance are an enigma, a terrifying character with an iconic manner of speaking that alone makes him one of the scariest horror villains.
2006 Billy and Agnes: A guy whose backstory we know way too much about has Simpsons skin and his sister-daughter is played by a man for no reason.
2019: Don’t drink the black Kool-Aid??? What???
@One in a Thousand: You just summed up why classic horror should not be remade by incompetent hollywood directors.
And the 2019 Black Christmas made the 2006 remake look masterful not a great movie but better than that hot mess of a movie from 2019.
Wow, this film sounds so toxic that it’s making me mad and I haven’t even seen it haha
Hope you’re doing well Chris, keep it up and stay safe. Respect
Dude same
Same here.
Bro fr same this movie just sounds terrible
dude if you are mad now DO NOT WATCH IT! It will make you want to blow your brains out!
13:07 That spiderman incorporation into the movie was probably the best edit in the entire movie.
Good job, Chris.
That was the longest exposition scene I’ve ever seen.
Imagine making a film solely to insult women and then when they complain, to Just say: "It wasn't made for you."
Then I guarantee they would be thrown in jail
This is the movie that insults women. The exposition is there and the message is clearly so heavy because the writers didn’t think their audience (women) would be smart enough to get it
Even most of the female characters suck lol.
This movie insults women and feminism more than any man ever could
Lets do it
12:45 "BeCaUsE meN hAvE aLl tHe poWeR."
I just...I don't know what to say. Other than whoever wrote this script should probably never write another one ever again.
I'd love to see her say that to a homeless man.
Wish I had all that power they're talking about. Would be nice.
I'm sure black and Hispanic men have so much power in America. Funny how this shit is coming from the most privileged people on earth... white women
@@psychobillynumbnuts1 you can't just say black or white it's 2020, it's dark grey-american and light grey-american
I know. Although I feel like the boyfriend was making some valid points about the double standards and gender expectations that are imposed on the two genders/sexes. Unfortunately, the film wasn't interested in exploring nuance in the discussion of it's themes.
I love the subtle detail of wearing a Sailor moon t´shirt to review this movie. the class
Sailor Moon is a good strong female character
Willem Dafoe: "TELL ME HOW!!!?"
I lost it.
Can i ask what movie scene was that from?

You just accidentally summed up the problem with American culture in the most concise, articulate manner I’ve ever heard.
NOT American culture!! Just Hollywood!!
How out of reach are you from the modern world are you?
I’ve talked to people who talk like that and it’s some of the most confusing and frustrating conversation I’ve ever had. There’s no actual dialectic happening. They say some prescribed comment then scan your response for tripwires you hit that they can attack you for. Nothing gets learned, no understanding is made, and it ends with them being angry at you.
okay but the "what" edits during the stupid villain monologue scene got me screaming, like literally
This has been a moment in the life of Lil' Jon.
As a women I find this movies attempt at feminism insulting.
Eboni McCain as someone who is related to a feminist, this is pretty much how they act.
She was trying to set up a curfew for all the guys in town with her group. Both gender rights groups believe the other should be in charge. We should be equal, other activists know that, LGBT+ for example.
@@oraclescrolls That's not real feminism. Those women are self-serving, sexist and fake as fuck and they hide behind the word feminism. Feminism began at a time when women really didn't have the same rights and some realised they didn't want to be housewives and wanted education and careers of their own. It was a time women should remember. Now we have women bitching about having doors opened for them and being called ma'am.
Vanessa I know but now it’s a civil war between the two. The first few waves were good and needed, this one however....
OracleScrolls yeah and feminism isn’t a synonym for equality, more like a political movement. Every women I know has dropped the label
@@Vanessa-xx3yz If I had a nickel for everytime I heard "that's not real feminsim" 😂.
I can’t believe this was in theaters, that speech at the end was hilarious.
You know fucked up when people perfer to see the 2006 remake than the 2019 remake
"This isn't meant for you" is a good way to intensify whatever belief you see as wrong in said group of people, never have your point go across, expose yourself as short and ill minded, and shut off interest in your work of fiction.
Feminism. "We are about equality. We care for both men and women."
Also feminism:"This isn't for men, they shouldn't watch it and fuck them. Girl Power!"
So it’s a movie Were you’re happy when the main cast dies. Got it
Take that "I" out of main and you got it right lol
I think it is a movie when you are happy when just everyone dies^^
True feminism pushes for equality. This movie’s brand of “feminism” tries to uplift women by putting men down. It’s bad that this horrible movie could be used as an example for why feminism is a false movement, when in reality it’s incredibly important and relevant.
The first two terminators did a good on feminism. Strong feminist Sarah Conner. New movies are a joke.
This is really well stated.
Nope nope nope Feminism as far as I'm concerned has always been about power exchange. It's the same garbage that came out of Revolutionary France, even evolved the same way.
@@w4ntedm4n92 So back in the First World War, women getting jobs was "power exchange"
@Lord Farquaad Back in the First World War when the Men had to be off in the war, women were finally allowed to work in the factories, on the farms etc. This later allowed women to continue getting jobs after the war becuase it was proven that they could do just as good at them as men
Chris: Wears a sailor moon shirt
Me: Ah, I see. You’re a man of culture as well
Sailor Moon appeals to everybody unlike Black Christmas 2019.
Yes, he is a man of culture.
As a strong women and because this movie was said to be “fiercely feminist” I refuse to watch it.
Ami Brink it's an insult to woman and movie fans.
strong woman lol
Imagine me saying "As a strong man.." Who the hell cares
Whirling Music lol, I’ve seen this shit everywhere, like tf?, so we should all introduce ourselves by “as a strong male/female”, whenever we speak?... stupidity
Ami Brink So, you’re not a feminist then?
Did the writers of 13 Reasons Why have anything to do with the writing of this film? 😂
Lol what does that show have similar cringe writing?
@@EricCarter12 Not this bad, but they do have an obvious feminist message. And that itself isn't bad in the show, or how its presented. But the show in my opinion fail on other levels. I hate everything explained well in his Why I hate 13 reason why season 2.

I don't get why they even remade this. The 2006 remake still seems very modern and fresh and was enough.
Random dude,
Because it's 2020 and they needed to virtue signal female empowerment with a female director, otherwise how can they deflect all their other movies where the main character going through some pain is actually a woman.
Femcel propaganda
Because "Entertainment" is about propaganda and is used to push messages.
Lmao the incels are out in full force for this one
The movie had the right overall message, but the execution of it might have been the worst I have ever fucking seen, and having it be named Black Christmas’s is a blatant cash grab
The thing that’s bugs me so much is that this remake had so much potential seeing that the main characters friend LOOKS SO MUCH LIKE THE ORIGINAL MAIN CHARACTER FROM THE 70s , she should have at least been that lead
Can you imagine if men made a film and said “Ladies, this movie isn’t for you.” LOL the public crucifixion that would follow would be enormous.
It’s like they want to make a whole different type of strong women leads but cut out all the necessary compromises needed to make a fully realized character. They should also interact like most people would.
There can be no "fully realized" characters in feminist movies because modern feminism doesn't allow female characters to have flaws or be feminine. Just like with Rey in Star Wars they're boring, idealized cardboard cutouts of characters and nothing else.
@@Kast yeah it makes me, as a female, laugh at the movement that's supposed to be about me choosing my life my way telling me I'm not allowed to be girly.

At least she had The Art of Self Defense with Jesse Eisenberg last year!

I also like Carey Elwes, but granted this might not even be the worst film he's been in... *cough* Oogieloves *cough*
The main takeaway from the ending is basically the guys were release from a spell and left confused as to what they are doing in the moment. One of them was saved because they know him and the rest were locked in the burning building to die. The girls basically turned into villains at the last moment.
They literally took that idea of can't tell the good from the bad so just do away with all of them.
Black Christmas sounds like a forgotten Tyler Perry movie from the 2000s
But then again, when does Chris review Tyler Perry movies?
Garrick Groover You fucking edited your comment just so you could sound more funny 🙄. The original comment was: Black Christmas sounds like a forgotten Tyler Perry movie
I mean, it does sound more funny does it?
Sometimes you think of a better comment, but the original still has a lot of likes so you don’t want to delete it and start from scratch.
It's a remake of a terrifying film from 1974.
Sadly, a lot of college campuses have people that talk exactly like a Twitter feud 😒
Loved the review. I struggled with the scene involving Nate being kicked out of the house a lot! I felt like he had a valid point, but was made to be a villain and promptly kicked out of the house. I also agree the whole movie felt like a string of argumentative Facebook posts.
Andrew Tibbs if the message is that men have all the power, how is that conveyed by the one man in the scene being overpowered and kicked out of the group? And it’s a contradiction to say “men have all the power” and “men can’t comment about this film”. Who is controlling the discourse? Who has the power?

It was just cringe-inducing. He starts spouting talking points that sound a lot like real-life criticisms of feminism, but in an improper context. It's a weird, forced interaction so that the movie can give cringey counter-arguments to anti-feminists. But it's cheap because the writers can contrive a scenario that fits their ideology.
So the guy is bringing up points that are valid in general in a world where things are nuanced... but they are invalid in a movie where the men are clearly in the wrong, simply because the movie wrote it to be so.
10:36 In defense of my fellow screenwriters, it’s rarely our fault when it comes to exposition. Producers force us to write that stuff.

What Joseph Teran said!!!!
I saw this with my dad when it came out, we walked out in anger after the part when the boyfriend argues with the girls about feminism
Thank you so much for a truly well articulated and thought out review. I would expect nothing less from you. Many reviewers just said it was awful but really gave no real reason except it’s woke. I think the argument this isn’t meant for you so you don’t understand is such a cop out. Being a woman I feel this movie speaks to very few people. I prefer a more realistic argument where their aren’t all bad men but simply bad people. Women and men. We both have the capacity to do truly horrible things to one another and trying to blame everything on one gender is ridiculous.
Thank you so much for saying that. I'm SO GLAD to see I'm not alone in this world.
Matthew Minor Oh I definitely don’t think we’re the only ones.
My guess after seeing it, is that this was pitched as a gender version of "Get Out", but done incompetently...
