I give Shrek 4 a 4 star rating (no pun intended). Animation: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Characters: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Songs: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (no pun intended)
So I found out recently that the flautist who performs the Pied Piper's magic music is actually the son of the guy who wrote the original Shrek children's book the movies are based on!
I looked it up and damn it's true Jeremy Steig was an American Jazz Flautist and his dad was William Steig, the original creator of Shrek He died a few years ago unfortunately
I had no idea Shrek IV was hated in the anglosphere, here in Latin America is often regarded as a great conclusion to the franchise and very loved, and even memed. Maybe it's because of the brilliant dub we were given.
About the whole Pied Piper appearing in Shrek 1 thing: Remember this is an alternate reality which is much harder to live in so he might've just went from the good path to evil cause it was easier to live that way.
I love the detail that king Harold tries his hardest to convince Queen Lilian not to go through with the deal with Rumple because of his own deal with The Fairy Godmother.
I love the detail that Shrek is convinced that they wouldn't sign their kingdom to Rumple. It's a nice way to show how far Shrek has come. Kinda reminds me of when Stinky Pete called Buzz Lightyear Lightweight and Woody responds angrily "he's name is Buzz Lightyear, reminding us of when he used to mispronounce his name in the first film.
I feel like a lot of people miss how the ending of the movie retools the moment that made Shrek snap. At the party at the beginning of the movie, Shrek’s roar is him venting out his frustration. But when everyone starts applauding and cheering for him, it only makes him angrier and he smashes the cake. When he returns to the party after the alternate reality collapses, the cheering and applause is almost congratulating him on returning home, with everyone cheering his name. Then the party carries on as normal, as Donkey asks Shrek to give his kids an encore before shouting “That’s my best friend!”, almost as if Donkey is giddy that Shrek made it back safely after fading away. It’s a really clever piece of writing that makes the ending all the more emotional to me.
A guy who worked on this movie gave us a talk in collage (he was the brother of a professor there), he told us that: Shrek 1 is person falls in love, 2 is reinforcing the love, 3 is whatever, 4 is a man facing a midlife crisis and ruining his life but because movie logic, he can turn it back
He also talked trash about the Bee Movie, and how low key noone wanted to work in that movie and how him being spanish, Tulio in El Dorado was phisically based on him and Miguel was inspired in a co-worker
Admit it, you were here because you wanted someone else to speak for how much you also love Shrek for 42 minutes and 36 seconds. We're all here for the same reason
"Do you know what the best part of today was?... I got the chance to fall in love with you all over again." My god, that one makes me tear up every time. My favorite line in the entire Shrek series.

"I got to fall in love with you all over again." "I got to fall in love with the Shrek franchise all over again." Me watching this video: I GET TO CRY OVER THE SHREK FRANCHISE ALL OVER AGAIN :')
Oh how the tables have turned. Shrek 5 never came out and now after Puss in Boots 2 we are actually dying to get our hands on Shrek 5... and also expecting it to be exceptionally good.
Shrek 1 does a gread job establishing the characters and setting Shrek 2 builds the world even more and expands the story. It also introduces more cool characters Sherk 3 Shrek 4 Concludes the story in a beautiful fashion and wraps up everything that needs to be wrapped up
You know, funny thing Recently i rewatched it as adult This time this movie hit me. As a kid i didnt understand it, but now i did. There is just something in seeing shrek as a father sit down hopeless and pick out the doll, and you can imagine him thinking, that due to dumb mistake, he just erased his daughter from reality.
i still love that "thanos'd" or "snapped" are now perfectly acceptable terminology for the act of a character dying or being erased from existence in a cloud of smoke
Watched XMen: The Last Stand the other day, and Jean does something very close to Thanos snapping people. See here: ruclips.net/video/fhSBtClJAnU/видео.html
@@velonian5154 SILENCE HEATHEN! This is a HOLY place! Shrek the Turd is a cinematic abomination that we do not speak of here! (I am just joking. I don't hate this guy).
Lord Farquaad is really easy to explain, he lives really far away from Far Far Away, at least 700 miles according to Shrek 2. He would just send Knights to the dragon castle until he gets bored of not seing results and goes for the other two princes.
Theory about what happened with Farquaad: He kept sending knights to get Fiona and they all kept getting eaten by the dragon, so eventually he just gave up and "rescued" another princess
3 is not a great movie with a good arc but it is watchable I think the moral in it could of been compressed into a 30 minute special which is the problem
People say nasty things they don’t mean when they’re frustrated let’s be real and it takes awhile for them to fully come to terms with their mistakes. It’s pretty common for people to not immediately regret something mean they said or did cause they’re overtaken by anger and they’re convinced it was justified. That is so accurate I’m pretty sure we’ve all had those moments.
It's annoying, but my headcanon is that Schaff's video may have gotten Copyrighted by Universal and they put any ads on there to compensate on that "Lost Revenue"
I can relate to Shrek's struggles since I became an adult recently and have a bunch of new responsibilities such as college, a full time job that is very stressful and overwhelming, trying to be a big brother figure to 2 people, and struggling with mental health. So yeah it's been an extremely difficult adjustment, even to this day, and it's part of why I love this movie so much
Theory about the Pied Piper: In the actual Shrek cannon, the Pied Piper was just an ordinary guy, but in the Rumple canon, had to go off the deep end to pay off bills, kind of like Gingy
for some reason this theory makes me really want to see an alternate timeline where green arrow from the dc universe becomes a bounty hunter after the timeline gets changed i have no idea why shrek of all things makes me think of that
@@jockeyfield1954 that's actually an interesting idea I wonder if there's a story line in the comics in an alternate timeline where that happens or atleast something similair
The piper’s visual continuity could easily be explained by remembering it’s an alternate reality where he most definitely could look different. New clothes and different food intake ext. Everything’s different there.
The roar scene is so important; think about it, an ogre only roar when he's angry and that should be really scary. But when he finally does it everyone chears. That means his previous life of being feared is gone for good, at least in that world.
Compared to Shrek 1 where he was bothered that society was scared and disgusted of him Here in Shrek 4, tourists admire him, the mobs with pitchforks wanna have his autograph, and now they're celebrating his birthday, even the do-the-roar kid wants him to do it, yet despite all of that at that first act of the film, he didn't realize what he had he's ever wanted
I almost shed a tear when the book closes, revealing them on the cover, that is, that fairy tales exist and they can be in it. Such a closure moment since he tore apart that cover at the very beginning of the first movie. Ogres can be happy and have their forever happy ending, too. Such poetry in that.
Shrek: mostly comedy with some drama Shrek 2: even mix of comedy and drama Shrek 4: mostly drama with some comedy Perfectly balanced as all things should be
@@High_Priest_Jonko It's more of a comedy in the traditional sense considering how bad attitudes, exaggerated character traits, and unfair traditions, are the main focus. A drama focuses more on the character's actions (drama even means "action")
I only watched this movie once when I was 10 years old and it was in theatres. I remember not liking it because I hated Rumplestiltskin's design and character, I didn't like the concept of the alternate universe here, and I just felt like the movie was too boring for me. So it was pretty forgettable, and I never watched it again. Now, I'm 23 years old. And after randomly checking out the Shrek franchise again, I finally grew to appreciate the *layers* of emotional storytelling this movie went through. The realistic crisis that Shrek was going through hit home for me. Understanding what isolation did to Fiona made me sympathize with her. Rumplestiltskin's motive and actions made me see how evil he really is. Shrek's tears when he realized he had given up his family forever, his desperately trying to convince a jaded Fiona to love him, their finally loving each other, and Shrek telling Fiona that she saved him that day in the tower all made me cry. Really, all I needed to love this movie was to grow up. It is definitely a severely underrated movie, and I hope kids like me grow up to understand this movie as it was meant to be understood. I know Shrek 5 could be around the corner because of The Last Wish. But this really is the perfect ending for Shrek, and I can't imagine a better send-off than this.
18:05 Theory: The pied piper is actually the same person seen in Shrek 1, but because in this universe most of the farytail characters are captured and the world has become more unforgiving, he had to adapt by wearing black clothes to sneak around/hide and has started using his flute for bounty hunting, which is currently very helpful to the current ruler, Rumple Stiktskin. Edit: You can even see the pied piper in the normal world as well, just with white clothes
The same comment but every shrek movie Shrek 1: I thought love was only true in fairytales. Meant for someone else but not for me Shrek 2: love was out to get me, that’s the way it seemed [REDACTED]: disappointment haunted all my dreams Shrek forever after: and then I saw her face, now I’m a believer
This is why I love analysis videos. While I still don’t love this movie and only think it’s ok, it’s so interesting and powerful to see how it means to someone else. It’s amazing how all media can mean something to someone, even if not everyone gets it.
The purpose of this whole movie was for Shrek to realize just how much he matters to his friends and family and how much they matter to him. Shrek seemed to happily embrace the loner lifestyle he lived at the start of the first film, but here we see him yearning to go back to his old life and realizing just how empty he feels without the people who care about him most. In the first film, he tells Donkey just how lonely the ogre lifestyle is and how he's had to come to terms with it. In this movie, that really sinks in as he gives up a world where he's loved by many for one where he's feared, hated and oppressed and it sinks in how he made a massive mistake trading in his loved ones just so he can try to get his old life back.
Nuclear take: The pied Piper looks different here because its a alternate world Edit: His outfit is darker cause the world is now more bleak, unlike the first Shrek ALSO WOW THIS GOT A LOT OF LIKES!
I have to be honest. I don't really think Shrek 4 is underrated, I can see why so many People don't like it. Don't get me wrong, I still think it's a pretty good movie and it's definetly better than Shrek 3, but this movie is a joke compared to Shrek 1 and 2 which are wonderful masterpieces
My headcanon for the Pied Piper's changes is that, in Rumpelstiltskin's society, he just had to change his way of life, turning to the darker corners of his world.
That would explain why he's at the dance party at the end, wearing a white costume instead of a black one. In the original timeline, he's a pretty chill guy, only bounty hunting in the darker timeline.
Especially considering how Farquaad's inquisition against fairytale creatures either fell through or never happened so he was able to hone his craft beyond just rats, and probably got his fancy new flute from a witch or something
My theory as to why the Ogres were around in the OG timeline is because Shreks wish for their freedom wasn't negated, so when his old timeline was re-established, the wish was carried over and let to Ogres being free in his universe
@@alanmooreisrasputinreincar8106 That or they got hunted to extinction but Shreks wish carried over to the base universe, meaning they kept their freedom and weren't hunted
I like the detail about Rumple not knowing who Donkey is a random line at first but then becomes a justification for a hole in Rumple’s whole plan. Cause if he did know who Donkey was, then he probably wouldn’t have allowed Donkey to be so close to Shrek when he was in custody. Then if Shrek had never met the alternate universe Donkey. He would’ve probably never had the motivation to break free & escape & Rumple would’ve won before the third act was over.

kid movie do not equal bad but tbh i never have seen illumination really try something, maaaaaaaaaybe the 1st despicable me but im still doubting if the whole series is just a long fever dream or not.
As I see it the Prince Charming question has 4 options: A: The King signing a contract to end all his "problems", if he considered The fairy Godmother a problem, she could also get Thanos. B: Rumpelstiltskin knew those two also wanted the Kingdom and he aliminate them both. C: Now that Rumpelstiltskin owns Far Far Away, Charming gains nothing by rescuing Fiona. D: The Dragon just ate Charming. I don't think that's the case because the Fairy Godmother wouldn't allowe it.
I had an idea of what happened to them in this timeline basically since the king and queen are gone and rumple owns far far away they can’t get claim to the throne by rescuing Fiona so instead don’t bother with it and just stick to their potion factory but since rumple and the fairy godmother do the same thing basically he either out sails them or he shuts down their factory and they end up running a small potion shop desperate for money
I never saw the similarities until Shane himself said he looked like him and I was like he kinda does and I can’t unsee it. I am trying not to see it but I can see it now
The third one isn't even very memorable, it's that bad. I think I maybe saw it twice, and I literally did not remember it hardly when I watched it again. But Prince Charming (or Prince Sissy, if you'd prefer) was the worst part of the whole movie. He was more or less a filler character in Shrek 2 whose presence didn't mean very much (sure, he was supposed to make Fiona fall in love with him, but she clearly wasn't into him, nor did she seem to buy that he was "Shrek", he wasn't even trying), but in the third, he was worthless without the Fairy Godmother.
Or you can just not show your kids the third movie and just say that forever after is the third movie and the conclusion as it doesn’t say it’s the fourth. Or if not just say that the better Shrek shorts than the third is the third. Idk. I’m just rambling.
The Devil May Cry joke is apt considering the amazing DMC3 had its sales noticeably hit by DMC2 being a pile of shit that forgot what made the first one great.
I was about to point out that during the briefing, Fiona asked "what's this?", to which he responded by pointing out it was his chimichanga stand. But then I remembered she pointed at it, so he still could have interpreted what she was saying.
Id like to bring something us that I really liked. The scene when Shrek cries over the doll, being his emotional wake up call to how heavy and sever his problems are is ironicly the same object the literary woke him up every morning. I love that.
Hey hey hey. Hold on a sec. You’re not alone on this one. Shrek 4 is my favorite out of all of them. Shrek had everything he wanted in life and didn’t realize it until he lost it. But he never gave up, he kept fighting for it but when he did give up, he did a good deed by setting all the ogres free. Also when he was disintegrating and Fiona said: is there something I can do? He could’ve said: kiss me, come on kiss me before it’s too late!!!!! But no he told her that he loved her and he was so glad that he got the chance to fall in love with her all over again. Also it shows that without Donkey he wouldn’t have succeeded so he learned to appreciate him. It was an amazing way to end the franchise
Shrek 2 is better for me, but I love Shrek Forever After so much, it is one of my top 5 best dreamworks movies alongside Shrek 2, Prince of Egypt, HTTYD 3 and Megamind.
I think the joke with shreks weird friendship song is that he's trying to appeal to donkey's love of musical numbers and is failing hard at it Remember when he trys to break into a friendship song when he first meets shrek?
And on top of that, that particular song was the exact same one Donkey had been singing earlier in the movie, so I think Shrek was trying to jog his memory by singing it back to him.
31:01 Thank you for explaining that part. Because every single time I watched this movie, I thought “why doesn’t Shrek just show Fiona the contract like he did Donkey? Wouldn’t that be enough to convince her that he’s telling the truth?” You at last answered that. Because it will bring into question how Shrek was even convinced to SIGN the contract in the first place. Shrek would have to tell her that he gave her up to fulfill his own selfish desires. So it’s no wonder he didn’t show her the contract.

I love the detail that king Harold tries his hardest to convince Queen Lilian not to go through with the deal with Rumple because of his own deal with The Fairy Godmother.

I NEVER SAW IT THAT WAY LOL
I love the detail that Shrek is convinced that they wouldn't sign their kingdom to Rumple. It's a nice way to show how far Shrek has come. I love your pfp

The fact they didn't even name it Shrek 4 speaks for everything.
This movie was my favourite Shrek when I was a child and I still really love it.
My headcanon for the Pied Piper's changes is that, in Rumpelstiltskin's society, he just had to change his way of life, turning to the darker corners of his world.
That a pretty good headcanon
That would explain why he's at the dance party at the end, wearing a white costume instead of a black one. In the original timeline, he's a pretty chill guy, only bounty hunting in the darker timeline.
Especially considering how Farquaad's inquisition against fairytale creatures either fell through or never happened so he was able to hone his craft beyond just rats, and probably got his fancy new flute from a witch or something
What about rumpelstiltskin?
I like that Schafrillas tries to avoid saying "That was his mistake!" at all costs
My theory as to why the Ogres were around in the OG timeline is because Shreks wish for their freedom wasn't negated, so when his old timeline was re-established, the wish was carried over and let to Ogres being free in his universe
Now that’s awesome!!
Plus there were probably always other ogres in the world that we just never saw

I like the detail about Rumple not knowing who Donkey is a random line at first but then becomes a justification for a hole in Rumple’s whole plan. Cause if he did know who Donkey was, then he probably wouldn’t have allowed Donkey to be so close to Shrek when he was in custody. Then if Shrek had never met the alternate universe Donkey. He would’ve probably never had the motivation to break free & escape & Rumple would’ve won before the third act was over.

As I see it the Prince Charming question has 4 options:
A: The King signing a contract to end all his "problems", if he considered The fairy Godmother a problem, she could also get Thanos.

You were the luckiest child in the whole world.
It was probably better that way. I have the dvd of shrek the third, and watched it, and . . . meh. Thats how bad the movie was.

I was about to point out that during the briefing, Fiona asked "what's this?", to which he responded by pointing out it was his chimichanga stand. But then I remembered she pointed at it, so he still could have interpreted what she was saying.
Seems legit
How would he hear the sound of the flute then?
@@RegisGudefroy I can't tell whether that's meant as a joke or not
Regis
He was just dancing

19:57 I never noticed that, goddamn this movie went the extra mile
Id like to bring something us that I really liked. The scene when Shrek cries over the doll, being his emotional wake up call to how heavy and sever his problems are is ironicly the same object the literary woke him up every morning. I love that.
we love to see that irony behind important objects in movies
I also loved that everytime I saw it
"sever"
Whoops, lost my head. Who spelled severe wrong in the script?

I agree. Shrek 2 is amazing but I really like this one
@@sakareeh agreed
I'm actually shocked to hear that Shrek 4 is underrated. I've seen it twice in theaters lol
Shrek 2 is better for me, but I love Shrek Forever After so much, it is one of my top 5 best dreamworks movies alongside Shrek 2, Prince of Egypt, HTTYD 3 and Megamind.
It’s my favourite too
I GOT TEARS IN MY EYES AFTER THAT SCENE WHERE SHREK SAID HE FELL IN LOVE W HER ALL OVER AGAIN, GODDAMIT
I am crying over a Shrek movie wtfs wrong with me

Same. Oof my heart. 😭
Same I was tearing up a bit as well
*All ogre again
When Shrek says “I got to fall in love with you all over again” in the 4th one 🥺🥺 literal tears
I think the joke with shreks weird friendship song is that he's trying to appeal to donkey's love of musical numbers and is failing hard at it
Remember when he trys to break into a friendship song when he first meets shrek?
And on top of that, that particular song was the exact same one Donkey had been singing earlier in the movie, so I think Shrek was trying to jog his memory by singing it back to him.
Yep

Samuel Sherman *Incredibles Guy* yes!
Same I thought that too and to be fair Fiona would be more mad at him then ever
Shrek 4 looks like it was created by a God because it was created by a God and Shrek 3(dead)looked like Shit was created by Shit.
Certainly
@@adrianatejeda6198 I bet if he showed the contract it would eradicate all hope of them being together and it would make a sad ending.
I agree with your opinion, this sequel to the first 2 movies is an example of what a true cinematic finale should be
