I did have "20 Greatest Hits", because I was led into thinking "well, if you're a true fan....", but I got rid of it - twice. I had the cassette, and was annoyed to discover "The Long and Winding Road" was transferred from a wobbly tape. You can hear the wobbling in the string fade out at the end. THEN, a few years later, I picked up the LP version and discovered to my horror that it looked like a K-Tel album - I hadn't seen such small grooves since the days of "Believe in Music" and Ronco's "Good Vibrations". I didn't initially buy a copy of "1", a friend made a copy for me from his CD. I did later pick up the DVD of "1" with the DVD containing the videos - some of which I'd seen on VHS bootlegs - they looked and sounded better on the commercial release. I still haven't played the "1" CD because who needs it when I have both Mono and Stereo remaster boxes from 2009...NOT to mention the '17, '18, '19 and '22 remixes.

Copies of CDs? Hmm... the wonders of technology, LOL!!! ;-) Anyway, I remember playing BOTH of those K-Tel albums. "Good Vibrations" sounded worse than AM radio. But WOW don't those videos on the '1+' DVD look incredible!

The only way I think Apple/Universal can justify a new compilation of previously released music is to finally issue all the U.K. A/B sides on one 2 disc collection. From Love Me do to Let it Be. It seems like something that should have already been done , and it sort of has, but only as single box set etc, not as one, one stop album. It’s a simple concept The Beatles- complete singles on two cd’s. Sure it’s basically Past Masters, but unlike PM, wont have the historical oddities only the hardcores want such as the German songs, the wwf Across the Universe etc. plus it would be an opportunity to come up with a better packaging design and name then Past Masters.

    • @fab4free4all20
      @fab4free4all20  Год назад +1

Well, that certainly sounds good! But I would figure, Joe, that a nice boxed set could pack all all of the singles AND the 'oddities' that you mention. I mean, why not appeal to both the 'casual' and 'hardcore' fan?! After all, the WWF 'Across the Universe' does sound nice among the singles, as would the mono 'Yellow Submarine' EP tracks. My thought is, let's get one boxed set with everything (not including 'Anthology' stuff or 'Let It Be (Naked)') that isn't on the regular released albums, even if it's on 'Past Masters'!

@@fab4free4all20 I hear you, but here’s my reasoning for thinking a complete singles 2 cd / 3lp vinyl would be an ideal release not the only potential release, but definitely the one with the most appeal to a broader audience, since we know that’s who Apple would prefer to cater to (an unfortunate side effect of 1’s success, where if every subsequent release doesn’t sell in the millions, it’s almost considered a failure, when the reality is for a band that hasn’t really existed for 50+ years all of their releases sell incredibly well)
But other then appealing to a more general audience, it’s never been done before. We’ve had the box set of vinyl singles, and that was more geared toward the collector, and that was great for what it is. But a collection like this, if you include those historical tracks like the wwf a.t.u. and especially the German tracks would stick out like a sore thumb in the running order and be a distraction for most general fans. Save tracks like those for something like say…an updated and expanded Anthology box set , which is where those kind of tracks should have always been. And in a perfect world, a revamped Anthology would come after all the studio albums have been given the deluxe treatment and include any and all stray tracks that should or could have been included on the relevant sets that were left off (cough, Carnival of Light) and outtakes from Yellow Sub and Magical Mystery Tour as well, which much as I love I can’t see those two getting the full deluxe treatment.

Correction yall: the Blue Album 1967-1970 DID hit #1 in the USA on Billboard... Kudos though for mentioning Please Please Me was #1 on all the other UK charts, except for Record Retailer, which was used as the basis for the UK charts on the '1' CD, a big mistake. RR was the least representative UK chart of the 60s, sampled the fewest record shops compared to the others (only 30 from Mar 1960 to Dec 1963), had a bogus tie-breaker because of the low samples, disagreed the most with the other charts, had 11 records to hit #1 which did not hit #1 on ANY of the other charts (NME, Melody Maker, Disc, Record Mirror), had 6 records that did NOT reach #1 that hit #1 on ALL the other charts. Rock on !!

I bought 20 Greatest Hits back in 1986 but it was more just to be a completist than anything else. I still preferred the original albums or the Red and Blue Albums (I was always on team Red as I tend to lean towards the earlier stuff) . I do know the Blue Album did make it to #1 in the US and the red made it to #3 and those remain the top selling Beatles albums according to the RIAA website along with “1” . You made some great points about why “1” was such a big seller. The accessibility of CD players, price point and also it was available EVERYWHERE…..if you went into convenience stores it was available for purchase. I think the only thing that makes this collection less than essential is the lack of Please Please Me and Strawberry Fields (I know they only made it to #2 in the UK record retailer but I believe both made it to #1 in some of the other charts. Great show guys….glad to see you making more content.

Isn't it cool that 'Red' and 'Blue' are still as important as they are? I love the 'Team Red' reference, LOL! And yeah, I also wish those two tunes had made their way onto '1'. But then we might have had the quality control problem on one of the LPs again, LOL! Thanks for listening!

The reason is that the Red and Blue did not reach Number One here in the UK in 1973, is that Aladdin Sane by David Bowie outsold both compilations. This was compiled by Allen Klein and ABKCO. The manifest irony is that he was gone from Apple Cops by the time of its release, and Neil Aspinall was in charge of Apple Corps, with the full approval of all Beatles.
For 20 Greatest Hits, this is in the period when Apple Corps had no control over what EMI globally released. Apple Corps did not want to give the promotional push because they had no say over track listing, artwork and promotion, and of course there is different track listings in the UK, USA and other countries. It is correct that in the late 1980s that Apple Corps went through the UK courts against EMI to gain control over what would be released, and it was granted.
Past Masters released in 1988 as two separate CDs, yet also as a Double LP, and compiled by the person’s name escapes me. I think it was the person who appeared in your two parter about 1974 and then did an episode about some book he wrote called Tune In. LOL.
Fast forward to 2000, and the release of 1. By this time the full promotional weight of Apple Corps and EMI were behind this, and for the first time this could be promoted on a global level, and with the full control of Apple Corps having complete control of the track listings, artwork and how it was promoted.
It was mentioned of 1 being inexpensive. This was also the time when the record companies were just beginning to lose control over the cost of albums, because up to then the cost of CDs were so expensive, and LPs were so inexpensive. How times have changed. So many factors here in the UK and I would imagine globally, Major Supermarkets wanting to undercut independent and chain record shops, and the beginnings of online shopping, plus the record companies being too slow to see the potential of downloading.
At the time of release, I bought the BBC, Anthology and 1 around £20 for each double or triple vinyl. In 2001 I paid around £20 for the triple vinyl reissue of All Things Must Pass at my local record store (still in business).

20 Greatest Hits was the first Beatles album from Capitol I intentionally did not buy because there was nothing new on it for me. I’m glad I didn’t, especially not realizing at the time how poor the sound would be due to its excessively long length for vinyl. Also seeing that Hey Jude was edited probably was another reason not to buy it. I had just purchased Reel Music at that time and at least that had a nice package and the drop out in I Should Have Known Better was repaired on the stereo mix.

Hi 'Marc'! We actually hadn't included the 'TMK' comp in our musings in part because it was/is totally digital. The only physical version was limited to something like either a few hundred or 1000 units. It also wasn't a 'greatest hits' collection, and it was released past the time frame that we were looking at, which was from following the break-up to 1982 for '20 Greatest,' and then the time between that release and '1'. Thanks for listening!

It's interesting to see this, 'plop'. I've been reading what I guess I can't help but feel is a lot of 'propaganda' from the companies that produce the type of pieces usually associated with Record Store Day implying that there's no difference between black and colored vinyl pressings. My gut instincts, however, just feel like that CANNOT be the case. I mean, could 180g COLORED vinyl be better than standard black? I've also read that current translucent colored vinyl is better than transparent. Finally, I've seen/heard the gentleman who post videos on RUclips as 'Parlogram', who I find to be very knowledgeable, mention that in his experience some of the white vinyl 'White Album' releases sound better than black pressings. I know that I purchased a French blue vinyl '1967-1970' a few years back, and it sounds incredible. But who knows how other copies... not kept in as optimal storage conditions... may have fared versus their standard, black counterparts! Thanks for listening!

Hi 'Day'! The '1' album released in 2000 was only a 'remastering'. The 2015 re-release, which accompanied the Beatles '1+' blu-ray and DVD, was totally remixed by Giles martin. Hope that clarifies! Thanks for the comment.
