    Im a pilot, pretty good video.. We do simulated sam launches where we have used up our flares and have an inbound IR sam.. only real option there although not optimal, is to turn into the missle if you can.. Cuts down your heat signature as well as the respone time/capability of the missle.. Can also be done with radar guided.. Usually with radar guided you turn into it and dive down..you showed a good representation of ground clutter to dodge, just be aware of any radar guided AAA or other upcoming ground fire that youre exposed to at lower altitudes.. good video!

      in the real Life the missile sees the HEAT from the Flares differently than from the Engine (jet) . the Flares do MORE heat & they r brighter ( I found it interesting ) . the missile can differ so JET from the Flares . I don't know the numbers but let`s say a Pilot has like a 50/50 chance and not 100% of Luck as in films or Games

    • @tyapka
      @tyapka 6 лет назад +7

      I also thought about that at lower altitudes this would be protected by Pantsir S or something like that. @Growling Sidewinder can try putting couple of Pantsir S's there two just to see if getting closer to the ground would still work?

    • @GrowlingSidewinder
      @GrowlingSidewinder  6 лет назад +18

      I was thinking that myself, but there are also no pantsir systems in DCS. however I have no doubt in my mind I would not survive an encounter with the pantsir system. they are far too deadly.

    • @OUTLAW-2024
      @OUTLAW-2024 6 лет назад +30

      Pantsir S1 and S2 are vicious..a family friend was also a pilot and flew the F-4E Phantom II in vietnam.. did everything from CAP to ground support to wild weasel missions.. heard a lot of stories about dogfights with migs and in one mission the flight dodged 26 SA-2s fired at them from Hanoi after they crossed Laos heading north to route pack 6..The aircraft had early warning systems on board that would give off an alarm in the headset everytime they were locked on (painted) by enemy radar and then fired at..He told me that after a few missions they would just turn off the volume or shut it off altogether lol too much noise in your ears when youre supposed to be concentrating on what youre doing..I wish i couldve flown the Phantom but did manage a ride in the backseat.. Never seen or felt anything with so much power.....felt like the world was coming to an end..When i did my earlier flight training for my ppl we used simulators with graphics nowhere near as good as yours in this video lol I flew into a military base in Cambodia a few years ago and got to see a few mig-21s up close on the flightline.. pretty cool..

    Great video! Very useful to me as a rookie.
    The system you referenced on the A-10C is the Missile Warning System and it works alongside the RWR. Using sensors on the nose, tail, and wingtips, it senses the IR energy given off by rocket motors. The MWS gives both an audio warning plus a flashing M on the RWR. It works pretty well but with limitations. It cannot tell the difference between friendly/hostile launches or aerial/surface launches. And it only gives you a warning as long as the rocket is burning. Friendlies using brevity codes (fox, rifle, magnum) helps a pilot correlate a friendly launch with a MWS warning.
    Flew the DCS A-1C quite a bit, so when I moved into the F-18 recently, was surprised to learn that the Hornet does not have an MWS.

  • @sasquatchycowboy5585
    @sasquatchycowboy5585 2 года назад +3

    The A-10C has a MLWS system. It picks up the flash of the rocket exhaust, and warns you. Funny story a buddy of mine was on an MRT team in Afghanistan. They flew them out on Blackhawks. On the way he decided to take a picture of something, and forgot to turn the flash off in his camara. Apparently the MLWS mistook the flash for an IR missile, and warned the pilot, and popped flares. My understanding is the ARMY flight crew were less than happy with him.

    Thank you for the very nice demonstration! It seems (for a novice like me, at least) that the hiding behind of a hill, if possible, is the most easiest and reliable maneuver. I should approach the target, keeping close to the ridge (if there are any) and go behind the hill once the missile launch is detected.

    this is very helpful as ir missiles especially were a pain in my ass even with countermeasures, usually, I would not throttle down or deploy a small number of flares as I did not think these factors mattered as I thought one of the missiles would randomly go for the flares i did not know I had to make a greater heat signature, thanks =)

    Excellent tutorial! All advice is sound. Hardest thing is detecting IR missiles in time when you are flying low and they just launch on you!
    With the SA-2 being released, I think we should have scenarios around SEAD w/ dumb bombs and rockets until we get more advanced toys and can actually hunt down S-300's :).

    • @GrowlingSidewinder
      @GrowlingSidewinder  6 лет назад +1

      ahha i do not like the idea of going after SAM sites with rockets and bombs. pretty sure you will die 9 times out of 10

    • @104th_pyromaniac5
      @104th_pyromaniac5 6 лет назад

      You can hunt down an S-300 today, with guns even if you wanted, it's just a matter of setting up the right parameters. If you have the opportunity to use terrain masking and you don't have a short range SAM/AAA threat you can get right on top of anything and kill it (though I wouldn't try to use slick bombs or anything that you'd have to pop up more than a thousand feet to use). It's pretty situation specific, you can't control how many of which air defenses get placed in what type of terrain, but it sure is fun when you pull it off successfully.

    • @shapiro5000
      @shapiro5000 6 лет назад

      If your strategic SAM are protected by shorter range SAM this will be tough. On it's own, an S-300 site would be vulnerable to this maybe if you got in close enough.
      It'll be interesting when we get HARM in the game.. wonder if it'll still be hard to take out SAM sites. I'd imagine an S-300 site would take several HARM to get through it's defenses.

    Nice video! Those IR missiles are tricky since you don't get a obvious warning - unless the plane has it. Yes it can be spotted visually but it seems like a big gamble since you don't know if a SAM threat is actual in a area at all times.

    A tatic that I use against enemy planes missiles is to break left or right, keep a 90° angle from it and climb full afterburner... to make the missile bleeds energy. Usually it works. I drop some countermeasures too.

  • @roijoi6963
    @roijoi6963 3 года назад

    Nice tutorial.
    Another scenario where you would want to stay high even after missile launch is if you were using stand-off glide weapons to engage a target, as fast & high gives you more range. You'd still want to head for the deck ASAP, and have Scotty beam you into a Viper instead of this slow-assed toad of a Hornet, but you'd have to stay high & fast until you had a good shooting solution.
    S300s fly at ~ Mach 8, so no barrel rolling against them is going to work - probably - but against Mach 3-4, at least IRL, it does work, although CJs carry towed decoys as well. (DRFM decoys would also work). I hope barrel rolls work in DCS, because they've saved hundreds of pilot's lives IRL.

    A Mirage 2000C with DDM sensors on the rails for the Matra Magic can detect IR missile launches. Just be advised that it going off doesn't necessarily mean a missile is coming for you, it's just that the sensor has picked up a launch within its cone.

    Love you channel man... quick question... Is there any indicator in the f/a 18 or other aircraft that alert to the presence of IR SAM sites at all or do you have to have visual to even know there's a threat? Maybe I just need to study preflight briefings more lol

    • @GrowlingSidewinder
      @GrowlingSidewinder  6 лет назад +5

      some planes like the a10c warn u about missile launches (any launch of any missile) but they have built in sensors for that, I do not believe the hornet has them, so yes u do have to make visual contact to see the missile launch. you can take comfort in the thought that IR SAMs are relativity short range, so you SHOULD be able to spot a launch. especially if ur flying low to the ground...gotta keep ur head on a swivel. and thanks for ur support on the channel man its much appreciated.

    I used to play Cold Waters. Torpedo évasion is similar. Drop “noisemakers” (they make submarine sounds to confuse sonar) when you make a turn. You turn IN to get out of the seeker cone, diving up and down to lose it at a different depth. Or outturn it getting out of the torpedo sensing cone.

    Yes S300 to escape it in the middle, high, low altitude little chances. In very low altitude is a game-changer because operators, who navigate it to target lose the radar contact. Russians have S400, S400M, and new S500 installed to protect Moscow, Crimea - won't work for a single attacker.

  • @MajSolo

    SA2 avoidance is put them on the beam and then yoyo up and down beginning at a very low frequency / large turns then increase the frequency as the missile gets closer. If you see the missile try get the rythm so that the last seconds before it hits you are in a dive and can yank up while the missile is going down. So that is avoiding a stupid long range missile. How long this strategy works as you go towards each more modern SAM type I don't know. But usually vs radar seekers using doppler radar you beam the missile and drop chaff. If you do it right you will dissapear until you do something wrong and you will appear again.
    If you want to turn into a missile that just been launched short range and go head to head with it then experiment with flying in a spiral towards it dropping flares.
    If the missile reach you when it is at top speed and refuses to get spoofed by chaff or flare then good luck.
    Oh I forgot about jammers, turn them on and off back and forth it might confuse the missile..
    Looking forward to a mission where the SAM site is the target. An S300 site will do nicely :) Put the S300 crew in Ace mode :)

    Some free info:
    Chaff is made of aluminum because it reflects radar beams confusing the ground based radar making it see something and then it disappears (chaff is finely cut aluminum stripe like particles that are very tightly packed into a round canister, and aircraft can host several hundreds of them like the A10)
    Theres a whole world out there of radars, not only limited to anti-air purposes. www.radartutorial.eu

    Good video. On one thing I would disagree tho: when you were talking about accidentally wondering into the S300 envelope, you say you think it would be wise to turn right into the missile. In my opinion it is way safer to simply keep turning left away from the missile until you have done a full 180 degree turn... making it impossible for missiles to hit you.

      i think I only turn back in for the demonstration purposes. I've heard some stuff from real pilots (can't confirm) about turning into missiles, but it deff doesnt work in dcs. unless theyre way low on energy. I don't remember saying that, but if I did I misspoke and thats my bad.

      @Growling Sidewinder Turning into the missile is a technique that is used when the missile itself is very close and dependent on the missile you are flying against. Some of the older long range SAM's had significantly lower g tolerances than the ones faced today, it has to do with the lead logic and flight characteristics of the missile. If you used a well timed pull at max g into the missile with it on your lift vector the missile would either not be able to pull enough lead because of the aspect change, or it would depart from controlled flight. It does in actually work in DCS depending on the missile coming at you, but most of the missiles can in fact be defeated with the same concept using either orthogonal or concentric barrel rolls with countermeasures. The SA-15 and SA-10 are the two systems that are difficult to defeat using those techniques though.

    When flying close to the ground but not doing a 180° turn you might instead wanna try to keep the radar site on your 90° or 270° (so on your 3 or 9). This way you have the best chances of fooling the radar thinking you are the ground

    Because missiles need adequate energy to be a potent threat, this makes SAMs almost useless, because their true effective range (in which they have enough energy) is significantly reduced if they can only launch at range where their missiles will still have 1+ mach right?

    • @GrowlingSidewinder
      @GrowlingSidewinder  6 лет назад

      no. I dont want to make it sound like the SAM is only effective at mach 1. I've been hit by sams traveling at mach 0.3 lol. it all depends on YOUR energy vs the missile. if you have poor energy management the missile can still hit u at a far distance cuz you'll be a slow moving target.

      Growling Sidewinder I think your chaff usage is incorrect. The whole point of chaff is to give the enemy radar extra contacts to choose from in the foreground of the sky. However the chaff move at almost zero relative velocity so if you are not putting the radar on the 3/9 line you are still giving the Doppler radar a positive signature of your plane. If you dump chaff on the 3/9 line the radar has x amount of contacts to choose from and all of them read the same so it is more likely to be fooled.

    • @GrowlingSidewinder
      @GrowlingSidewinder  6 лет назад +3

      as far as I know in DCS, that would have no effect. s300 missiles are not anti radiation homing, sooo turning ur radar off would just make you blind when the s300 fires at you lol. its locking onto radar beams reflected off the surface area of your plane. the best you can do is turn ON ur ECM.

    • @Proximax9
      @Proximax9 6 лет назад

      indeed. S300 has a separate search radar module and a separate track radar module. The search radar finds you from the sky, gives the direction to the track radar which locks you up. Once locked, the missile goes away and follows the reflected radar beam from your plane. I believe the search radar can start searching for next target as this is happening.
      if the track radar is destroyed, the search radar alone is not enough to make the missiles find their target. this is why I like the BUK-system better, as the launchers have their own little radars incase the track radar unit gets blown away.

    • @GrowlingSidewinder
      @GrowlingSidewinder  2 года назад +3

      some aircraft have different systems other than RWR that can tell when a missile is launched, they use the heat source of the fuel of the missile to detect a missile launch (which means they will often warn about friendly missile launches too that might not be at you)(the A10 has such a system I believe) if your aircraft doesn't have this kind of system then you have to visually see the missile launch and notice the lack of RWR tone to realize its IR.

    It is all easier to say than done :). How do I know when to start an evasive maneuver with S300 for example. If it fires from it's max distance it will be a different time, and if it fires from, like, 1 mile it will be a different time reaction. It should be not too hurried and not to late, but ... - Is there any way to know how far the missile is and to quicky "calculate" when to break? (if you're lucky to eyeball it, which is not always granted)...

    • @GrowlingSidewinder
      @GrowlingSidewinder  5 лет назад

      if an s300 fires on u from 1 mile away just eject lol. u just just go defensive the second you think a SAM has been fired at you. don't treat it like behind enemy lines when theres a specific moment to break, as soon as you get that launch tone, just dive for the ground and go defensive.
