Yes, this is what actually happened. I'll go back under my desk to shiver in fear.
I have enjoyed so many games you have been involved with it's almost staggering. The work you have done has truly moved the industry forward. While Doom for the 3DO was a troubled port (no fault of your own), I can't imagine John Carmack nor his entire team doing much better with similar time constraints.
Is there any chance you have the files for or at least remember some of the enemy designs that Randy Scott had his team come up with?
I'd be interested to see if the designs are somewhat salvageable, or if they're just as bad as Randy's IQ.
You're one hell of a programmer
I respect you you're an amazing programmer
I see this all the time in the gaming industry, skill less tricksters with big mouths standing on the shoulders of those who put the sacrifice in the background. I'm glad this time became public. You are awesome Rebecca!
It's impressive what she did, considering the short development time and the lack of assets.
Wow! This Randy Scott guy sounded so incompetent. No wonder this port failed so badly. Rebecca you tried your best with what was given to you.
"Can't you just download one off the internet" made me lose hope for humanity
Rebecca it's a goddes if she was capable to do that in only eleven weeks, there's no doubt that she made a miracle making this game nearly playable on that insane release date. This always it's going to be one of the most remarkable development hell events of all time on the videogame history, along with Sonic Xtreme.
The thing is that this story of development hell it's the oposite of the most of the development hell stories around. The ones like The Last Guardian, Duke Nukem Forever or Daikatana were a development hell because of the release delays and development obstacles, but this one and the story of the before mentioned Sonic Xtreme were a development hell because of the rushes of the release dates.
Some deaf executives cannot realize how long could take a game to produce and the rushings are a heavy problem. If you wanna be a good game developer please do not be like Randy Scott and listen to your programmers, because what they want to say to you maybe could save your game of being dragged down the dust.
Spot on! It's a shame that even today, plenty of people in the industry that are in positions of power do not comprehend what it takes to make a video game. It's even worse that the general public tends to lash out at the devs, rather than understanding that it's almost always management's fault.
@@ExpansionPack sadly it's a common thing nowadays, specially by the possibility of patching the game after release.
But not all games could be saved by patching, that's something the people unfortunately is use to see on companies like Electronic Arts, Ubisoft and most importantly, with SEGA and the Sonic franchise, where most of their games doesn't even reach the 2 years of development on an age that AA games use to take around 3 years of being completed.
For example, Sonic Forces only taken 18 months of production and you know how resulted that game.
@@ExpansionPack I mean yeah, look at Cyberpunk 2077
@@ExpansionPack But the music is shockingly good for this port. Which who made the music
Never trust a Randy from the game industry
Yep.
Screw Randy Pitchford
Leave Randy Linden alone (the guy behind the SNES Doom port). That one is cool.
9:40 You can see the screw holes in the tootsie toy shotgun
sick retrospective on Doom 3DO, I cant help but feel bad for Rebecca. It's funny how Art Data Interactive's portfolio was this, a random chess game, and Rise Of The Robots (oof). With a lineup like that along with Doom 3DO's failure, I'm not surprised that they fell off so quickly. Definitely subscribed :)
The worst part is that this wasn't just a fanmade story to put the 3DO or ADI in a bad light.
This *actually happened.*
Scott is like the goofy character in an action movie : he is pretty useless and is responsible for stupid décisions....but he has a secret skill revealed at the end
ONE WOMAN
TEN WEEKS
THREE DEE OHS
ONE TRIP INTO HELL
DOOM ON THE 3DO
That Scott guy is uhh, how to put it lightly, dense as fuck? Lmao
The development cycle sounds eerily similar to what I heard about Anthem, with the executives marketing the game based on fake trailers/screenshots first and then dumping all of the requirements on the software team afterward. History does like to repeat itself like that, although part of me is sad we got to miss out on a Doom port with some hilariously bad FMVs. It can't be a 3DO game without an FMV somewhere. 😂
no wonder 3do was also made by EA
Dude, you for SURE need more attention. This channel and video is too underrated!
The death animation of Doomguy shown at the end, with his head exploding and eyes falling out in a gory mess. Is a nice unique touch!
Google Randal Letcher Scott if you're interested in how Randy is doing now.
Somehow I'm not surprised but still disgusted and disappointed.
13:07 I was almost expecting the mafia but I remembered, that was a different console.
I did an explanation
@@TheRealJochen I was referencing the Gizmondo and how alot of people at the company that made it got arrested for ties to the mafia.
@@Melphas Not just any mafia... the Swedish Mafia!
wow what a story... I got this game when it first came out. Soundtrack was definitely memorable. I don't think I played the game with the tiny resolution much though, i thought the game played decent enough with the screen halfway used lol.
This is just one of those story’s that sound so unbelievable to be real
So basically, he wanted brutal doom.
Match made in heaven? (At 3:08)
More like a match made in Hell!!!!!!!
Also, if you think the SNES port is bad, remember that the SNES port has higher framerate than the 3DO, despite being a 16-bit console and not designed to make 3D games in mind. Also, the 3DO port has other good changes compared to other versions of Doom, like in the Atari Jaguar port, there are spectres in the game, but due to a programmer oversight, the spectres look the same as pinkies, which is fixed in the 3DO port. The soundtrack is also killer, and there's a different death animation where the player's face gets turned into crimson meaty paste in the HUD. Also, we'll never get to hear Randy Scott's side of the story because after all that fiasco, he became a music teacher for kids. Eventually he got convicted for allegations about sexual interactions with minors, but on the bright side, he won't become a bother to anyone anymore, and think back to what he did wrong, that is if he has the humanity inside of him.
Randy sounds like one of those typical people who get mad at us techies when we try to explain to them that what they’re asking for is virtually impossible due to how stuff actually works versus how they think it should work.
Definitely glad I chose a career in food service as opposed to my initial choice of tech support since I would want to flipping drop kick some of these brainlets if I had to deal with nonsense like this on a regular basis, just sayin’. 😒
I suspect Randy Scott never actually played Doom and just knew it was extremely popular.
Big Mac will tell you ?
You know, speaking of the SNES version, it really does feel like the yang to the 3DO’s yin: we got a hard-working studio trying their best, ultimately failed by hardware that just couldn’t hope to deliver; a wimpy, normal man standing up to a monstrous villain for what is right, but tragically facing the harsh reality when his body suddenly becomes unrecognizable.
It’s the complete opposite to the 3DO version: an incompetent excuse for a studio that did a disservice to a pretty capable system, and the people who believed the hype; a “superman” that, with all his gifts, all his power, just… sits on his ass and plays Roblox idle games all day while the city and its civilians suffer
i saw doom 1 in doom 2. i saw doom on pregnancy test. Time to port doom for a book, not an electronic, a REAL book
I feel like 2000-2010 was the age of "Can It Run Doom?" and since that time, we've been living in the age of "Who Will Run Doom On It First."
Would that be a choose your own adventure format?
@@user-yv6xw7ns3o its like Give Yourself Goosebumps! but in hell :)
@@mcgfn damn this would be such a good read..
Awesome and very informative video! You deserve a ton more subs.
Did anyone else notice the shotgun had 400 ammo!?
It’s interesting that almost all bad DooM ports come from limitations and not the programmer(s)
Eg: snes doom was bad cause the snes had no business running doom
Gba doom: same reason as the snes but atleast the gba was 32 bits instead of the 16 bit snes
3DO: randy Scott being oblivious of game development giving our 1 programmer 10 weeks of development to make said game
Saturn: custom engine made for the Saturn was rejected by John carmack (regrets rejecting said custom engine)
Really good quality content in general, but Moreso from a small channel
13:07 how ironic that it was Doom of all games. a deal with the devil.
This channel deserves way more subs. Nice video!
DYK: After Art Data Interactive went out of business, Randy Scott opened up a music school. But in 2017, he was arrested as he was accused of molesting two of his students, and he is currently awaiting trial.
I don’t know if it’s the same Randy Scott, but this is awful.
Nice job!
Rebecca is one of the greatest developers and gamers to exist.
She is the first person to win a National Video game tournament (USA).
Also, dont feel bad/sympathize with Randy. Just last year (2023) he was convicted for Child Molestation after opening up a music school.
This was he no man's sky of its time. It was below mediocre, but people wouldn't hate it as much if it wasn't advertised as the magnum opus of the gaming industry
An other that being ported on anything ? Well... Tetris ?
Fucking Doom we are talking about
I actually had this in 97 or 98 outside of the disappointing screen size.
The Snes version was the absolute worst looking and playing port of the bunch. The 3DO version was on par with perhaps the 32X version with better sound. Yes, the 32X port is a bit smoother but its sound is beyond atrocious and it does not have all of the levels.
Hey I really enjoyed the 32X version since my PC really suc*ed by that time LOL
@@JCORR76
Hey man, I thought the 32X version of Doom was incredible when it launched. My response was more of a looking back kind of thing. Remember when you needed a PC with some serious power to play Doom? With the 32X and Jaguar you didn't need to spend 2 grand to get there...it was an amazing time to be a gamer. ;)
They 32X version runs fairly well. Music isn’t great, but the frame rate is decent.
The SNES port is very much punching above its weight to be fair. Even with the Super FX 2 chip it's a miracle they got it running and looking the way it does.
@@VexAcer
You know...I actually loved Zero Tolerance and Doom for the Snes was a much bigger feat so, I guess I'm a little biased.
someone needs to mod doom 2 where randy scotts severed head is on the same pole as john R's
New development on this... Well mostly on Randy. He started a music school for children, and he is now awaiting trial for s*xual abuse of a student 😬
Someone a couple years ago left a comment stating to Google him. Saw the charge, but no context until now... How does everything with this guy keep getting worse.
But does someone knows how many copies of 3DO doom were actually sold???
According to Heineman, 50,000 copies were ordered for production, when there were just roughly 250,000 3DO machines in the States. Selling 20,000 copies of a game on 3DO was considered a big hit, so ordering more than double that was asking the impossible.
@@ExpansionPack wooow that’s pretty interesting, reminds me off pac man for the atari 2600 for wich it’s story is similar,
And as many will say, human mankind will never learn from their mistakes , that’s why the same story repeats itself over and over again (from generation to generation),hahah,
No wonder i got so many times warned, never make twice the same mistakes.
@@johneymute no ones talking about pac man stay at that rehab place
Least you didn't talk about what happened to Randy Scott after ADI closed.
Making new levels for this game really IS like that though. It's a 2.5D maze shooter. Just draw a maze out of lines and dots in the editor. That just shows how utterly worthless Randy Scott must've been.
I could probably make a half-decent level for 90's Doom and I've hardly even played the damn thing.
Level editors were quite limited back in the 90s. There was no 3D camera or any fancy stuff like that.
@@richardmatthews2598 Those exist now? That's really cool, but literally just line drawing.
That post was centuries ago. Why have you awakened me? I still stand by the proclamation that Randy Scott is worthless.
Meh, still better than the SNES port at least.
not at all.
No. The SNES version has all the levels and is more faithful to the DOS version than any other ports at the time. Not to mention the fact that the game is on a SNES which is technologically inferior to the 3DO
Yes, it is. The SNES version is horrendous.
@@REALMARCHINADER
The only that was lacking was the graphics, they're horrible.
@@ChaseMC215 but charming on they're own way.
man, there is not a single doom player in existence that can actually say they went through Hell and back, except for this lady; having to put up with that bullshit that these people wanted.
Jaguire
This is shocking
Smart move to pick money first
You're one of those heathens who pronounces it "jag-wire". Seriously why do some people pronounce it that way
I still enjoyed the video
Because I was born in the Midwest, where the English language goes to die. 😅
@@ExpansionPack thanks for the reply, sorry for being snarky. Hey I just noticed you haven't made a new video in a year. Do you no longer make content?
it's a shame, the 3DO has the definitive best port of Wolf3D (and I would argue possibly the best version of Wolfenstein 3D until modern source ports), only to get the definitively worst port of Doom.
A floppy of the shareware version instead of the source code lmao
8:45 correction: the 3DO ver doesn't feature the entire soundtrack and lost many of the ost
I've never understood the love the soundtrack for this port gets. It wasn't impressive by any stretch, and quite frankly sounds like the soundtrack to a late 90s Cinemax Soft Core Porno.
That's oddly specific.
@ExpansionPack admit it, now it's in you're head.
I can't compare it cause I can't say I've seen anything Skinemax, but I always appreciate oddly specific comparisons.
The SNES version is awesome on it's own way. The 3DO version is awful all around.
The SNES soundtrack is one of my favorites from the entire series!
32x was a lot better
There's much worse
snes doom runs just as poorly and doesn't have the good music so honestly i think its a little worse
32x Doom says hi
@@brdgamemaster 32x doom doesn't run as poorly
Soooo you call out the technical jewel of the SNES port instead of the butchered Saturn port. Questionable priorities.
I'd love to see the original Saturn port before Carmack made the developers scrap it.
Snes doom was really good imo
Stop using texture filtering!
Another case of great soundtrack, in a shit game.
Hntai doom!? No Way that's Scott's wozniaks nightmare!!
Edit:oops wrong video.
